Monday 3 June – Saturday 22 June

“I often look at my paintings and daydreampossible continuations panning out beyond theframe. Particularly when pictures follow a scenicroute, one finds oneself at the boundary line withthe urge to take an extra step… then perhapsanother.

“I seem to be developing a habit of making extrasteps, and in ways that may allow still furthercontinuation if the mood requires – works inprogress, perhaps.” – Martin McDowell

Water’s EdgeGina Socrates

Monday 24 June – Saturday 6 JulyPreview: Monday 24 June 5.30pm – 7pm

This exhibition examines the varying patterns andtextures of the shoreline where land and seainteract with one another. This mutual manipulationgives rise to an infinite possibility of the shapes andpatterns. The shoreline, therefore, is an endlesssubject; a fluid, sinuous border constantly in fluxthat yields fixed forms when captured on camera –forms which are infinite in supply. Looking up fromthe shoreline, the exhibition also includes a seriesof beachscapes. All images are taken on St.Brelade’s Bay.

ECHO WOODby Andrew Motion

When I arrived in that new country for the first timeI came by boat, by canoe in fact, and completely alone,so the pines and conifers stepping down to the river, some with their roots showing as pink as pigs’ tailsin the dark current that swirled past them regardless, were my only company. It was for this reason perhapsI found myself striking my double-ended paddle hardagainst the side of my canoe: to frighten them awayif such a thing were possible. Also to start their echoes, and to have these echoes grow and so fill up the woodswith circles of dilating sound as if awakening the treesor something. Stirring up, as might be done to animalsand people, and to make all melody a replica of thingsthey understand already, and the place they hear them.

Commisioned for Jersey Arts Centre’s Festival 30 Celebrations Sir Andrew Motion is Jersey Arts Centre’s Honorary Patron (2013-2017)
