Workshops and classes will take place in the buildingto appeal to everyone. Most design workshops requireIT so there should be sufficient facilities to provide for these requirements as well as an adaptable space.

Requirements

A staggering majority of the designers in Scotland are Freelancemost of whom work at home or dont have an office. The Centre would be an ideal working environment to get involved withpeople and be inspired.

Designer The gallery spaces and exhibition will attract public attention but in addition the space should be playful and interactive to cater to the‘day out’ visitors.

The space should bring designers together to workand gain knowledge and inspiration.The activity of networking needs to be well encouragedas the purpose is to conduct interaction.

The building was originally a Sawmill, established in1877.

The atmosphere of the sites previous use still remains present within the building due to its 19th century architecture and industrial qualiteswhich is explored through the project.

This image illustrates the previous use and thenew proposal for the site coming together to createa lively atmosphere. the monotone figures show the 19th century past trasnforming to the more colourful modern renovation of the centre for contemporary design.

The building was previously used as a sawmill and for deliverypurposes has a large garage doorentrance leading into an openvoid highlighted here in purple.

Access will therefore be on elliot streetthrough a large reclaimed steel doorwhich is shown below.

The Couryard areais important in welcomingvisitors to the centre as it

is the first area they encounter.It acts as a lively garden retreat away

from the street and outside world.The seating steps element

brings the inside outside creating a social space.

Vinyl is transfered to the glass front of the shop and runs downaccross the polishedconcrete floor.

How the book drop works:

Members can borrow design books and magazines from the shop and library.Books can be taken to the coffee shop to read and when finished with, left on the book drop to be returned. New books will also be left out for the public to enjoy.

The book drop is also used for displaying products from the shopto encourage people to come have a look and increase sales.

A chance for new designers to buy and sell bespoke products.

cotton mesh conceals the study pod with a zipped fastening to control a slight private element to the busy hub.

Power point in eachpod.

The metal frame structures the fabric mesh which stretches round the three sides acting as a film over the window.

This creates a darker mood at the end of the building to encourage a serene working environment.
