From Lakeville to our Lineage - -- Diane was the f i r s t to get the fever of wanting to know from where

our families caw. It wasn't lbng before I became involved.

Not knowing how or where t o begin, we joined the American-French

Genealogical Society which meets a t LeFoyer i n Pawtucket, R.I.. In

the f i r s t issue of "Je Me Souviensl' which we received, a story by Mrs.

Lucille Rock mentioned the name "Generewtl' which i s my mother's family

name.

After meeting Lucille, we realized she had the expertise we needed.

We asked her t o research the family of my father, Pierre Ouimette.

Giving her the l i t t l e information we had, we waited fo r resul t s with

anticipation. Within a very short time she handed us a lineage chart

back t o the f i r s t Ouimette i n Canada. With the Tanguay books we traced

the f d l y back to Vrigny, Archdiocese of Rheims, Champagne, France. We

were convinced it could be done.

With Lucil le 's help and the assistance of many society members, we

began our search. We went through one repertoire a f t e r another fo r weeks

and found nothing. Suddenly, Mane made the f i r s t connection. We were

hooked. Clues were rare but they were there. We got so involved tha t

we wanted t o see and trod the grounds of our ancestors and we wished to

delve i n the archives, t o assimilate the i r history.

We always do our long distance driving very early i n the morning

when t r a f f i c i s l igh t . Before daybreak on Saturday, the f i r s t day of

Diane's vacation, we headed north. When the sun came up and bathed the

New Hampshire mountains, we lcnew it was a good omen.

In Sunapee, New Hampshire, we found a neat family restaurant sit-

uated next t o a covered bridge and across the s t r e e t from a waterfall ,

WNle waiting fo r breakfast and enjoying the view, we seriously debated

the wisdom of beginning our search i n Vermont. We decided against it.

MY grandfather, Moses William Genereux, was born i n Rutland, Ver-

mont on June 1, 1859. He married my g'randmother, Marie Duchaineau. No

record of t h e i r l~letrrfage has been Sound. The 1880 Rhode Island census

lists them, and t h e i r four ( 4 ) month old son, William, i n Lincoln i n

t h a t year.

Driving through the beaut i fu l Green Mountains of Vermont, a Red-

Tailed Hawk al ighted on a t r e e branch next t o our-car allowing us a good

view of t h i s lovely bird .

Eventually we arr ived a t the Canadian border where we were graciously

greetedby a border guard. Almost immediately the influence of the United

States , England, Scotland, Ireland and Holland was evident i n the varied

archi tectures .

The AAA tour book l i s t e d the best accomodations a t S t . Jean so t h a t

was chosen a s the f i r s t base of operation. Suddenly, signs gave direc-

t ions t o S t . Jean, Iberv i l le , S t . Alexandre hcd Chambly. This was p a r t

of our background.

My fa ther , Pierre Ouimette, was born a t S t . Alexandre, Ibe rv i l l e

on December 31, 1878. H i s f a ther , Frangois, and h i s mother, Tadile

(Odile ) Tetreau d i t Ducharme were married there on August 18, 1868.

My grandmother, Marie Duchaineau, who married Moses William Genereux,

was born a t S t . Joseph de Chambly on March 5, 1858. The Duchaineau

family has been traced back t o S t . Martin de Fleuray,Poi t iers , France.

It was ear ly afternoon when we got t o Rue Jacques Cart ier i n S t .

Jean. We were l o s t . We h i t our f i r s t language ba r r i e r . No one under-

stood English nor rrcy bad French. Finally, a t a gas s ta t ion , a young man

who spoke excellent English gave us easy t o follow direct ions .

Following along the Richelieu River it was easy t o visual ize

Indians canoeing and f ishing i n t h i s c lear , rushing stream's loveliness

with i t s frame of luxurient green. The c i t y ' s center i s run down and not

very a t t rac t ive , A movie theater featured l f L t h p i r e Contre Attack" and

"La Guerre des Etoile". An open a i r fnmnerst market was doing a thriving

business on a side s t r ee t .

Finding no vacancies a t a couple of recommended motels we t r i ed a

third. This was an eye opener. The sign a t the entrance read, "a i r

cooled, water beds and er ro t ic moviesf1. The grassy oval i n front of the

building held a fountain painted bright yellow with ahideous orange cu-

pid standing i n the center and surrounded by red flowers. The building

was bright yellow with bright orange doors and t r i m . Outside of each

door was an urn f i l l e d with Nasturtiums. Except for the cupid, it was

quiat a t t rac t ive . Did we dare?

We needed assurance of a place t o sleep. Mane went to the office

t o regis ter f o r a room with two beds f o r two people. The cl ientele must

be romantic as the manager could not understand why two people wanted two

beds. On opening the door of our assigned r u m we w e r e greeted w i t h the

scent of a delicate perfume. Wow!

The room was an old-fashioned bedroom with subdued lighting, doilies

and milk glass vases f i l l e d with p las t ic flowers. It was very clean and

the beds seemed comfortable. We stayed. We wondered i f they also rent

by the hour. We skipped the movie.

The search fo r food began. There are many restaurants offering

I ta l ian , Chinese and Greek food and western barbecues. There is no sign

of Canadian food. A sing advertised e. small place called ItLes Deux

Souertf . This looked promising. The menu offered pea soup, sow-marins

and spaghetti. We se t t led fo r spaghetti and it turned out to be l i k e the

kind I make a t home. Maybe it could be called French.

We learned t h a t t h i s was the tel-minus of the f i r s t railway i n

Canada, opened from S t . Jean t o LaPraire i n 1836. The mi l i t a ry i s much

i n evidence here and i n the surrounding areas. The Royal Mil i tary

College is here and there are f o r t s everywhere.

The farms a re huge but we saw only one f r u i t and vegetable

stand. Prices a re hich. I paid $1.00 f o r a p in t of blueberries ( they

came from New ~ e r s e ~ ) . Most roofs a re covered with t i n and the s i l o s were

intr iguing with maple leaves and fleur-de-lis painted around the top.

Before leaving S t . Jean, perhaps a l i t t l e his tory i s appropriate.

This i s taken f~,om a t o u r i s t map and guide called "Le Haut Richelieu",

by Pierre Lorrain, President of the Office of Tourism.

About 6,000 years ago, the Iroquois came and b u i l t t h e i r v i l l ages

along the banks of the Richelieu. Here they hunted, fished, learned t o

make pottery and cu l t iva te the land. The Algonquins l ived north of

here, along the S t . Lawrence River, and f o r r a ? years the two

t r i bes l ived i n peace, u n t i l 1570 when they began warring. Final ly the

Algonquin chased the Iroquois south but they often returned t o a t tack

t h e i r enemy. The r i v e r became known as the "River of the Iroquois".

Under the French regime there was l i t t l e habitation i n t h i s area.

Rare a re the homes i n S t . Jean tha t were b u i l t before 1876 a s t h a t year

a f i r e razed almost a l l of the old quarters.

A t the beginning of the colony, pc t te ry was imported from the mother

country. It was a t High R i c h ~ l i e u t h a t the first manufacturing of pot tery

was begun. S t . Jean produced the f i r s t white dishes cal led " l a va isse l le

bleu". These beaut i ful dishes had a motif of ra ised white flowers.

About 1880, the S t . Jean Baptiste glasses were made a t S t . Jean and

Iberv i l le . The glasses signed S t . Jean o r Ibe rv i l l e and the dishes

are col lectors ' items and hunted everywhere.

My anthropologist, Diane, cannot pass an Indian reservation. The

next stop was the Caughnawaga Indian reservation. Mass had already

s tar ted a t St . Francis Xavier Church but, as usual, we arrived i n time

for the sermon and two collections. We were disappointed as th i s

was the English Mass and not the one i n the Algonquin language.

The outside of the church looks large but actually the church i t s e l f

i s quite small. Since it is made of wood and very old, no candles are

allowed except on the a l t a r during services for fear of f i r e . Each

Station of the Cross i s inscribed i n the Algonquin tongue.

The usher made quite a fuss about not understanding Diane's

English. I panicked and could not remember a single French word. He

became disgusted w i t h us and f ina l ly told us i n perfect English where

we could find Kateri Tekakwitha's tomb, which answered Mane's ques-

tion. The marble tomb is inside the church a t the r ight side of the

a l t a r .

Blessed Kateri was born of a Christian mother and a Mohawk father

a t Aurieeville, New York. The Mohawks would not accept her because of

her f a i t h and she f led t o this Canadian reservation.

On January 3, 1943, Pope Pius X I 1 solemnly approved the decree

declaring her "Venerable". Pope John Paul I1 advanced her to the rank

of "Blessed". She w i l l be the f i r s t American Indian canonized "Saint".

St . Francis Xavier Church was bu i l t inside the walls of Fort Louis

t o protect the Christian Indians from the i r Indian enemies. The English

speaking pr ies ts made us fee l welcome and showed us around the small

but excellent museum which houses old a l t a r vessels, vestments of for-

mer pr ies ts and Indian a r t i f ac t s . Beyond i s a meager supply of souvenirs

for sale.

The Indians a r e devout Catholics znd devoted t o S t . Kateri . The

Knights of Columbus seemed t o be the only organization on the reserva-

Lion.

Canadian roads a re excel lent and well marked. A drive over the

Mercier bridge brought us t o a d i r ec t route t o Montreal. There a r e no

e x i t numbers, however, so we missed our e x i t and found ourselves on

the Champlain Bridge crossing back over the r i v e r again. This i s the

only bridge i n Montreal t ha t charges a t o l l .

ljrouaseau has many recom~~ended motels on the Boul Taschereau and

we found good accomodations a t a much lower pr ice than we expected t o

pay. We hod done a l l t ha t driving f o r nothing a s we were now only a

few miles from Caughnawaga.

Not everyone is interested i n everything so a bus tour gives a

good picture of a c i t y . Our guide f o r a Montreal tour was a student a t

McGill University. He knows h i s h i s tory and has a t e r r i f i c sense of

humor.

A s we crossed the Champlain Bridge on the bus, a Great Lakes f re ight-

e r was approaching. We were to ld i t was approximately 700 f e e t long,

about the height of the bridge. A t t h i s point the S t . Lawrence Seaway

i s separated from the S t . Lawrence River thereby keeping the f re igh te rs

out of the r i v e r ' s channel. Interest ingly, the s t r i p of land separating

these two i s a bicycle path. People were r iding and enjoying the day.

The Cathedral Marie Reine Du Monde with i ts s ta tues of s a i n t s

along the top i s 1/3 the s i z e of Rome's S t . Pe t e r ' s Basil ica and a per-

f e c t repl ica . We were allowed t o roam a t w i l l . Although it was Sunday,

the g i f t shop behind the a l t a r was doing a thr iving business.

Awesome can only describe the f i r s t impression of Notre Dame De

Montreal Church. A l l the colors and blue l i g h t s a re breath taking.

Four groups of t o u r i s t s , each w i t h i t s guide, were moving from

one sect ion t o another a l l a t one time. I t began t o f e e l l i k e a three

ring circus. The ease with which our guide, Frangois, switched

from English t o French and back t o English was astounding.

The wood carvings a re everywhere and a r t i s t i c a l l y done. The pul-

p i t intrigued me with one sa in t on top of another res t ing on the canopy.

The p i l l a r s a r e not carved but have small squares of red, blue, green

and gold completely covering each one. It was too much. Here a lso

the g i f t shop was behind the a l t a r .

Rue Notre Dame is the same a s any s t r e e t i n any l a rge cosmpoli-

tan c i t y . The s t r e e t i s l ined with shops, restaurants, banks and govern-

ment buildings. There was no s top a t the Old Quarter but t h a t was on our

agenda f o r the next day. Spi ra l s ta i rcases on the f ron t of the homes

seemed odd but we were told t h a t taxes a r e based on the amount of side-

walk used and t h i s saves space. Flowera i n pots hung everywhere and

looked gay and lovely.

Their heal th plan surpasses anything we have i n the s t a t e s . $1.50

per week from each working family member covers a l l heal th needs. Doc-

to rs , den t i s t s , hospi ta ls and medication b i l l s a r e paid by the government.

They a l so have doctors who make house c a l l s . A l l t h i s f o r $78 a year.

Food and clothing a re very expensive but energy costs a re much low-

e r than ours. For heating, cooking and l igh t ing by e l ec t r i c i t y , the

average cost per family is about $500 a year.

The buildings t h a t housed the Olympic competitors a re now senior

c i t i zen apartments. They a re self-containedcomplexeswith shopping

malls, theaters and garages. There i s no need t o leave the complex

unless desired. The cost of an apartment is 20% of income. A l l ne-

ce s s i t i e s a r e supplied.

The drive up Mount Royal i s treacherous but coming down i s worse.

S t . Joseph's Oratory a t the top i s fanlous f o r cures through prayers of

the l a le Uro lher ~ndre( , "MLracle Man of Montreal". H i s tomb i s i n the

o r ig ina l chapel on the grounds. Some pilgrims go up tha t huge f l i g h t of

s t a i r s on t h e i r knees but I ' m not devout enough t o climb them on my

f ee t . There were no takers on our bus.

The formal gardens a re gorgeous. The view from tne top, with Mon-

t r e a l c i t y a t your f e e t , i s worth seeing. I t must be spectacular a t

night when the c i t y l i g h t s a re lit. No building can be higher than

Mount Royal.

The next day we were on our own. But f o r one exception our Amer-

ican money had been accepted a s an even exchange although ours was worth

more. The f i r s t order of business was Tinding a bank f o r the correct

exchange. This resul ted i n two f r ee nights motel b i l l s f o r us.

After we had spent 3 hour waiting f o r ihe archives t o open there

was only one g i r l there who understood some English. Even i n Montreal,

French i s a must. About three hours were spent looking through t h e i r

records and finding nothing t o help us. Their records a r e f o r Montreal

and immediately surrounding toYms.

The Old Quarter was next. The center of the square is devoted t o

formal French gardens and very a t t r ac t ive . On both s ides a r e long rows

of connected stone buildings about three s t o r i e s high. Each building must

nave accomodated s i x families. Being connected kept them warmer i n the

winter. I would have dearly loved t o see the inside layout of one of the

houses but found no place where I could do t h i s . The buildings a r e

massive.

Each building on both s ides of the square had a wooden porch where

food was served. These a re not on the sidewalk a s a r e sidewalk cafes but

up a few steps . Here tables a r e crowded together. It was sheer luck

t o f ind an unoccupied tab le . We found one a t the Iroquois Cafe.

The fare wag sgus-marins. Let me enlighten you, A S O U S - B S ~ ~ ~ i s

a long, s p l i t m l l with a s l i c e of bologna, a s l i c e of tomato and a small

piece of l e t t uce a l l of which i s sprinkled with shredded cheese and served

cold. This was offered i n every res taurant except on the breakfast menu.

I ordered f o r both of us i n nly very best French. To my disgust the

waitress repeated the order i n perfect English. A lady tou r i s t a t the

next t ab le must have been impressed as she asked i f I could speak fig-

l i s h . Only one place on the square offered Cretons (gortons). The place

was crowded and we had already eaten.

Unfortunately the f e e l of Old Montreal i s gone. It i s now geared

en t i r e ly f o r the t o u r i s t trade. I was par t icu la r ly interested i n the

old c i t y a s my husband's mother, Victoria ~oe/ Forcier (For t ie r ) , was

born here on March 6 , 1873. She married Josephat DuPbre on October 18,

1897 i n Norwich, Corn.. Her parents, Gilbert Forcier ( F o r t i e r ) and

Philomhe Martel, were married on January iO, 1866 i n Montreal. Like

any other big c i t y it i s commercial and held no fur ther i n t e r e s t fo r us.

The Jacques Cart ier Bridge which we crossed has an interest ing

story. A t one time t h i s bridge was too low t o allow f re igh te rs t o

pass so each end was jacked up and raised one foot each day. A t no

time was t r a f f i c stopped.

Heading e a s t on a country road by the r i v e r there was almost a

constant view of the boats. There were many signs i n f ron t of homes

advertising b l e dtInde but there were no roadside stands and not one

ea r o f corn was seen.

The farms here were smaller than around the S t . Jean area and

there were no s i l o s with maple leaves o r f leur-de-lis painted around

the top. The homes are f a i r l y small and well cared for .

According t o our tour book Tracy offered the bes t accomodations

along t h a t route. The motel we selected had rooms wi th a view. We

changed rooms three times before we got what we wanted. The f i r s t one

had two beds and no view, the second had a view but only one bed. The

Lhird was u del igh l . There were Lwo beds, u large p ic ture window and a

small balcony over-hanging the banks of the S t . Lawrence River.

It was then 5:00 p.m. and we were hungry. The Brasserie next door

promised French food. So f a r we had found none. The res taurant had

ju s t opened and we were the f i r s t customers. There were three French

meals l i s t e d on the menu. We were told t h a t they had ju s t sold out our

f i r s t two choices. This seemed odd. The chef, bartender and waitress

must have been hungry. l'he f i n a l cholce was roas t pork cooked i n the

French manner and was del ic ious .

The balmy evening was speAt on the balcony watching the boats going

by, enjoying the sunset on the r i v e r and seeing the l i g h t s go on i n towns

across the r i ve r . I vowed to g e t up very ea r ly the next morning t o see

the sunrise and spend some time out there . It. was not t o be. We awoke

t o t o r r en t i a l r a in .

For the most p a r t Tracy and Sorel a r e not p r e t t y towns. Since t h i s

area i s the center of heavy industry, there is cement dust everywhere.

The manflacturing p lan ts a re huge and ugly. With few exceptions the

c i t i e s could be considered lower middle c l a s s and almost poor by our

standards. The r e s iden t i a l areas on the ou t sk i r t s a re f a i r l y a t t r a c t i v e

and well kept.

We missed seeing the road signs j u s t outside of Sorel and got l o s t .

It took driving around the f i sh ing area f o r some time before we be-

came re-oriented. The f i r s t open res taurant was i n Yamaska. Yamaska i s

a Cree word. We had no in ten t ion of going there but w e must have been

guided.

Somewhere i n our research there was mention of my great-grandmother,

Caroline Maher (Catherine Magee ), being born there, She married EV

great-grandfather, Louis Genereu. Following the direction of the church

spire that could be seen above a l l other buildings we found St. hfichel

Church.

In the pouring rain, Diane toured the adjoining cemetery for some

clue of the Maher family. She found nothing. In the church rectory

next door we met Rev. Father Gaston Charland. He was very cordial and

brought out old church records. A t l a s t we found Caroline. She was born

February 27, 1827 a t Yamaska and her parents were Richard Maher (Magee?)

and Jul ie ~ g b e r t who were married here on June 8, 1825. Father Char-

land f e l t tha t the family was I r i sh and th i s was verified by Mrs.

& r t e n e ~ f Woonsocket and a member of our society. She had lived i n

Yamaska u n t i l a few years ago and had compiled the records of St.

Uichel's parish before she l e f t .

Father Charland spoke very l i t t l e English and with my very l i t t l e

French we communicated f a i r l y easily. Many, many thanks t o him fo r

his patience and kindness i n locating some long l o s t ancestors.

With Diane's deep involvement i n the Indian cultures, the Abenaki

reservation i n Odanak was a must. It i s dedicated to Indian history

aria the museum is excellent. The history i s well depicted and the mu-

seum larger than it looks, It was worth the stop there.

Over a bridge again t o I'rois Ftivibres. Something might have been

missed by not going to the archives there. Instead we followed along

the r ive r to Cap-de-la-Madeleine. Although recommended, the motel here

was not a t the usual high standard. It was also i n what we discovered

to be the worst par t of town.

The Shrine of Notre Dame du Cap has been twice crowned by the papal

legate. The Madonna i s Canada's national shrine to Mary. The statue i n

the chapel has been consideredmiraculous since 1888, when her eyes alledgedly

became momentarily animated. The v i s i t there was depressing. Many bus-

loads of old, s ick and infirm were arr iving, the pilgrims praying f o r the

rure n~i rac le of h e u l i ~ ~ g aalid turning back disappointed. Here the souvenir

shop was i n a nearby building.

Stopping a t a Brasserie about 2:00 i n the afternoon, we s a t f o r f i f -

teen t o twenty minutes and no one approached us. Final ly a

woman appeared and sa id t h a t the kitchen had ju s t closed. A very good

turkey dinner was served a t a small res taurant i n a shopping center.

Canadian pas t r i e s a r e highly recommended. The waitress was the bes t we

encountered i n Canada.

On the way t o Lava1 University i n Quebec City, two motels re-

fused t o accept a pre-paid reservation fo r t h a t night u n t i l 1:00 o'clock.

No reason was given.

The archives i s housed i n a huge, stone building t h a t resembles a

church. The securi ty guard pointed t o a recept ionis t who understood no

English. The l e t t e r from our President, Bob Quintin, and, the membership

cards from both the Pawtucket and Manckester, N.H. soc i e t i e s must have

looked impressive. Although she could not read them, she issued mem-

bership cards.

Proceeding up a long ramp t o an upper f loor i n this la rge and

t a s t e fu l ly decorated building, we were again met by securi ty guards

who examined our cards. The request ts see M r . Auger was denied a s

he had been assigned t o another degartment. We were introduced t o

m. Gingras who was kindness i t s e l f . He showed us the f i l e s and how

t o use them. Discovering the names we were in te res ted in , he brought

many reper toires t o our table .

We made some connections and ver i f ied others. A t l a s t Mane found

the marriage we had hunted fo r two years. Louis m a r e , born Oct-

ober 9, 1843 a t S t . Fabien, had married ~alomke S i ro i s a t S t . Romuald on

August 20, 1866. Her parents were HiLaire S i ro i s and Anastasie ~e'l'ene

OIMeara. Here again was I r i sh . Several pleasant hours were spent here.

We continued on t o Beauporr a s rnost motels i n Quebec would have no

vacancies by t h i s time. N t h o w h l a t e i n the afternoon, the large

restaurants were not open yet . A very small one with only two (2)

tables did have a menu but only hamburger was l i s t e d . Nobody spoke

English. By now a McDonalds would have looked good.

The guided bus tour of Quebec City was not a good one. In very

poor English the guide pointed out S t . Louis Gate, St . John Gate, e t c . .

No h is tory was given and with no knowledge of what these huge stone

arches were, it was d i f f i c u l t t o ge t excited. We saw nothing of the

upper c i t y .

Unlike Montreal, the pace here i s slow. I t holds much of the old

town f lavor . The Chateau Frontenac dominates t h i s section. This i s

a romantic c i t y b u i l t on the high c l i f f s . The caleches ( two wheel

vehicles) are drawn by horses and a re everywhere. The horses wear green

bags ( ca l l ed diapers) i n order t o keep the s t r e e t s clean.

Dufferin Terrace of fe rs an excellent view of the S t . Lawrence a s

w e l l a s the towns on the south s ide. A special bus tours the Plains of

Abraham battlegrounds. Like almost every other Canadian, our families

have descended from both the Abraham Martin and Louis ~ g b e r t families.

Can we claim a section of land as a legacy?

The o ld c i ty , Basse Vi l le spreads out on the region surrounding

Cape M w n d and up the Charles River Valley, The only walled c i t y on

the continent north of Mexico re ta ins i t s old France aspect and atmosphere.

Known a s the Indian town Stadacona, it was v i s i ted by Jacques

Cart ier i n 1535. In 1608 Chamlain established a trading post and gave

the settlement i ts present name meaning "where the r i ve r narrowsI1. It

served a s the cap i t a l of New France from 1760 to 1854. I t i s now the

cap i ta l of the Province of Quebec.

about some of our ancestors who were lumbermen i n Rimouski t o ld of them

going t o Quebec t o co l lec t t h e i r money fo r lumber and seemingly spend

some of i t on Champlain S t r ee t which was then the red l i g h t d i s t r i c t .

The old town is now so commercial. Gif t shops l i n e the s t r e e t s and the

usual junk i s offered.

I t seems cer ta in t ha t the elevator from Louis Hebert's house to the

top of the c l i f f has been moder~lized. Long l i n e s of t o u r i s t s paid 50b

f o r a r ide . There was no way of knowing i f t h i s was pa r t of the old

house o r a new building. The house i s now one large room with wall

t o wall people.

Notre Dame des Victoires Church did not seem as gaudy a s I remembered

i t from a previous v i s i t . The exquis i te ly carved a l t a r resembles a

f o r t . The or ig ina l side a l t a r has a g lass enclosed, l i f e sized f igure

of Christ i n the tomb. I t i s s t a r t l i n g . Souvenirs were being sold next

t o t h i s a l t a r . This seemed the worst t a s t e possible.

Very ear ly the next morning we v i s i t ed the Basil ica of Ste . Anne de

I3eaupre< The archi tecture has Gothic and Romanesque features . Since i t

was so ear ly there were few people i n the church. A s usual we arrived i n

time fo r the sermon.

The miraculous s ta tue i s well displayed. The major r e l i c , the

forearm bone of Ste. Anne, l i e s i n a tabernacle on the s ide a l t a r . A

s ign next t o the a l t a r offered long burning candles f o r $2.00. In memory

of my s i s t e r who died two years ago and was devoted t o Ste . Anne. I

wanted t o l i g h t a candle. After depositinp; my money, I noticed t h a t the

stand holding colored g lass holders had no candles. Inst ruct ions were t o

use the special too l displayed and t o touch the center of the g lass hold-

e r s with it. The flame tha t issued was l i k e a p i l o t l i g h t from e i the r

gas o r o i l .

The g i f t shop i s i n another building and d i d not seem as sacril igeous

as those behind a l t a r s . I t i s very large and has a good var ie ty of r e l i -

gious a r t i c l e s .

Montmorency Fa l l s are lovely. They a re one and one-half times

the height of Niagara Fa l l s but not nearly as wide. The water rushes

over i n small r i vu l e t s a s i f each s ide seemed not t o be outdone. Un-

fortunately, a ra i l road track obstructs the view of the lower ha l f . It

i s necessary t o cross under the tracks i n order t o get a f u l l view.

We were going back t o Quebec City t o see the places of i n t e r e s t a t

our own pace but a t t h i s point i t was necessary t o s t a r t back home.

Our grea tes t desire was t o meet Rev. Father ~ r 6 ~ o i x - e Riou i n Fiimouski

and, with him, v i s i t S t . Fabien. We owe so much t o him as he provided us

with a l l s t a t i s t i c s of the ~ u ~ \ e r e family which we could not t race. I@ \

husband's fa ther , Josephat DuPerz, was born a t S t . Fabien April 19, 1874.

From Father Riouts information we have been able t o t race the family back

' h t o S t . Venant de Luyne, ~veche/ de Tours, France. Information about

the cul ture , the old ways, the approximate time and manner of emigration

and the Indian h is tory a re del ightful reading i n his l e t t e r s . Our visit

to Father Riou was not t o be.

On the way back t o the border the large farms were a s evident a s

around the Richelieu. There were fewer s i l o s but many more signs ad-

ver t i s ing maple syrup. The homes here a r e painted i n lovely pas te l

combinations. The strange looking f ron t porches with no supports and

the clothes l i n e s on the f ron t lawn with clothes blowing i n the breeze

seemed strange.

It took a t l e a s t an hour t o exchange our Canadian money back t o

American currency. No one a t the bank i n Beauce h e w how t o do it.

the French toas t and blueberry pancakes a t the Holiday Inn i n Portland,

Maine, were a special t r e a t .

Our advice t o anyone planning t o t r ave l the r u r a l routes a s we did:

the a b i l i t y t o speak French Is absolutely necessary. Do stop a t t o u r i s t

centers. The maps issued a re unlike any we have here and a re very valu-

able as they give much l i t t l e known information.

eighteenth of January 1&s, the Baal1 village of StJean, Qu6bec i s reveling. The

first contingent of 38 of the 58 pol i t ica l exiles i n Australia had arrived home

af ter an exile of f ive long years in New South Wales. The others arrived later.

However, three never returned t o thei r country.. .two died i n exi le (Louis Dura~uchel

d Ignace-Gabriel Cherrefils, and a third stayed behind, beneath the AuatrPlian

sky, there t o marry and establish roots. T h i s person was the patriot, Joseph Marcem,

who, af ter obtaining his pardon, refused to return to Canada. He decided t o l ive

i n his country of exile. A young Australian g i r l of nineteen w a s to have much of

a say concerning the decision of Marceau. T h i s young lady's rrcl~le was Mary Bafiett.

The patr iot Joeeph Horceau was born on 24 January 1806 i n l8AcLcdie, QuQbec, the

son of Jacques HPrcem ond Archange Bourgeois, who w e r e lnarried i n 1'AcLcadie the 13th

of October 1794. A f m e r a t Napierville, Joseph Marceau contracted his first

ringe a t l'Acadie the 5th of October 1830 with &l ie Fiedalu., who gave him three

children: &l ie born i n 1834, Z$hirin born i n 1836, a d Odilon born i n 1838.

Their mother, &l ie Piedalue was deceased very early i n l i f e , she having lived

only four months af ter the painful exile of her husband.

During the ineurrection of 1837-8, Joseph Marceau was an organizer of the

group a t NapierriU.6, and was the head of a company of 50 "patriotesn, who took

part i n the engagement at Odelltown on 10 November 1838. Apprehended four days

later , m c e a u gave his testimony a t his court m a r t i a l on 26 January 1839, and

waa conderaned to hang. Much l a t e r his sentence was conmuted and he w a s forced into

IIe arrived i n NW South Wales i n 1839 and f inal ly came to establish himself

:m the area of Dapto, New South Wales. Here he married HPry Barrett on the 9th

of October 1U, his marriage being officiated by Reverend John Rigney. Of

Joseph's second mamiwe were born nine children, all of the Protestant f a i t h

ercept one son, @ Jams who was a fervent Catholic un t i l the day of his

death a t an airancod age of 90 years.

The patriot, Joseph Harcsau died on the 8th of June 1883, a t the age of 77

pars. His tombstone i n the Catholic cemetery of West Dapto honors the matory

of this valiant 'patrioteI1.
