Becoming Even Stronger As we enter the Year of the Tiger, the Group remains in a very strong financial position

and well positioned to take advantage of opportunities for growth.

This is especially so in East Asia, which is widely seen as the engine of global growth

and where the Group has a major presence. As the feature on pages 12-19 reflects, our

business activities in Southeast Asia in particular have increased significantly over the

last decade. In addition to our traditional markets of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand

and the Philippines, we have also developed a major presence in the important

Indonesian market and become active in Vietnam, Brunei and Cambodia. The Group

is keen to expand in all of these countries when suitable opportunities present

themselves and to grow stronger as the Region prospers.

Group in Strong Financial Position

The Jardine Matheson Group’s Interim

Management Statement covering

the period from 1st July to 11th

November 2009 shows it to be in a

strong financial position with net debt

remaining low and the Group’s overall

trading conditions becoming more

positive. The Group’s earnings have

continued to improve and for the period

under review were ahead of 2008.

The effects of the global economic

downturn on individual businesses

have varied. Improvements have been

seen recently in a number of Jardine

Pacific’s businesses, in particular in its

engineering and construction activities.

Jardine Motors’ Hong Kong and mainland

China businesses have seen increased

demand. Jardine Lloyd Thompson is

producing a satisfactory performance.

Hongkong Land’s commercial

Michael D Ruslim

The President Director of Astra International, Michael D Ruslim, has passed away following a short but severe illness.

“Pak Michael was a good friend and trusted colleague,” said Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director Anthony Nightingale. “He will be hugely missed by all those who knew and worked with him.”

Mr Ruslim first joined Astra in 1983 and became its inspirational leader following his appointment as President Director in 2005. He will be remembered for his many outstanding achievements and his community involvement, especially in supporting the development of Indonesia.

Group Managing Director of Jardine Cycle & Carriage (JC&C) Ben Keswick said that the Boards and management of JC&C and Astra were shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Mr Ruslim’s sudden death.

“Pak Michael played a significant role in developing Astra’s businesses and steering it through challenging economic conditions to its present strong financial position,” said Mr Keswick. “During his time as President Director, he provided excellent leadership to the 116,000 employees of Astra and made a positive contribution to Indonesia.”

Mr Ruslim is survived by his wife, Ibu Trisni and two children.

Harry Wilken

Harry Wilken, Company Secretary of Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited,

has died after being taken seriously ill when about to return from London

to Bermuda.

A larger than life character, Mr Wilken first joined the Group in 1972 in Hong

Kong as an accountant. In a career spanning 38 years with Jardines he was

based mainly in Hong Kong, apart from spells in Hawaii and the Philippines,

until 1995 when he moved to Bermuda to take up the position of President of

Jardine Matheson International Services and act as the Company Secretary of

a number of the Group’s London-listed companies.

Mr Wilken played an important role in the local community in Bermuda,

where many tributes have been paid to him. He was also active in the island’s

Scottish community, particularly in hosting the St. Andrew’s Day celebrations

in Jardine House.

“I had known Harry since he first joined Jardines,” said Group Managing

Director Anthony Nightingale. “He will be fondly remembered for his warm and

generous personality and for his great contribution to the spirit of the Firm.”

Mr Wilken is survived by his wife, Eileen.

Jardine Airport Services Taking Off in China

Last year marked a milestone for

Jardine Aviation Services Group (JASG)

as the group’s efforts to expand into

mainland China were rewarded with the

establishment of its first joint venture

partnership in Yunnan, Kunming.

Yunnan Airport Service Limited is an

investment with Yunnan Airport Group,

which owns 12 airports in Yunnan

province and JASG’s ground services

company Jardine Airport Services

Limited (JASL), in which China National

Aviation Corporation (CNAC) has an

equal shareholding. The new company

is now providing passenger handling

services for 16 domestic and six

international and regional airlines at

Kunming Wujiaba International Airport,

which is ranked the seventh busiest

airport in mainland China.

Over the years, JASG has built up

a close relationship with the Civil

Aviation Administration of China

(CAAC) and mainland China carriers

as it sought the right moment to make

a major move into the fast-growing

aviation market.

“JASL’s experience in operating in one

of the world’s leading airports and the

quality of our services, together with

our participation in airport relocation,

have all contributed to us winning this

new business,” said Enoch Lam, Chief

Executive of JASG.

By 2020, it is planned to have 244

airports in mainland China. A new

Kunming Airport, which is due to open

at the end of 2011, will become the

fourth largest airport hub in China.

“Through JASL and Yunnan Airport

Service we hope to play a vital part in

this growth, particularly in Kunming

which is one of the fastest developing

areas of the country,” said Mr Lam.

Since 1991, JASL has also been

contributing to the development of

aviation services at mainland China

airports through a training programme

set up in collaboration with CAAC. This

facilitates the transfer of technical

know-how to management staff from

mainland airports, airlines and regional

departments of CAAC. The Hong Kong-

based programme has trained more

than 150 individuals since its inception.

“Through the programme we

are contributing to the setting

of standards and spreading best

practices throughout the industry,”

explained Mr Lam. “We also hope that

we are helping to inspire and motivate

future leaders in China’s aviation

industry.”

Jardine Matheson Group – A Focus on Southeast Asia

Having weathered the worst of the

storm caused by the global financial

downturn, the Jardine Matheson

Group is currently in a strong position

and poised to make the most of new

opportunities in Southeast Asia.

Apart from Singapore and Malaysia

where the Group has traditionally

had a major presence and its long

association with both Thailand and

the Philippines, there is growth in the

fast-moving and important Indonesian

market as well as in the newer markets

of Vietnam and Cambodia, in which the

Group is now investing.

The increasing extent of the Group’s

business activities in Southeast Asia

is reflected in the fact that in 2008 the

Region made up 43% of underlying

profits, compared with 9% in 2000,

and that percentage is likely to

increase further. The Group also now

employs some 180,000 people in the

Region. By far the greatest number

of these – over 144,000 – are in

Indonesia, which over the last decade

has assumed growing significance

through Jardine Cycle & Carriage’s

investment in Astra.

Firmly focused on expanding business

activities in the Region where

opportunities present themselves, the

Group is concentrating on identifying

and implementing means of staying

ahead of its competitors.

“This means continuing with viable

expansion programmes to sustain our

leading positions in all our markets,”

said Group Managing Director

Anthony Nightingale.

As the Region continues to show a

stronger economic recovery than

many other parts of the world, there

should be many opportunities for

viable expansion ahead, particularly in

the newer markets where traditional

industries are rapidly being overtaken

by the development of infrastructure,

manufacturing and services.

“Our long history and experience in

Southeast Asia, the growth of our

business activities in the Region over

the last decade and the synergy which

exists across the Group, mean we

are well positioned to become even

stronger in the Region as it prospers,”

added Mr Nightingale.

Involved in Indonesia

Through its investment in Astra, the

leading conglomerate in Indonesia

and the largest independent

Asia, Jardines has been actively

participating in the emerging

economy of this extensive island

nation. The Group’s older investments

in other sectors of the economy too

mean that Jardines is represented

across a broad spectrum of business

in Indonesia.

Currently the Indonesian economy is

to strengthening infrastructure,

improving the business climate and

is also rising as reflected in Moody’s

Astra, in which Jardine Cycle &

A Strong Presence in Singapore

Many Group operations use Singapore

leaders in their respective fields. The

city-state’s high standards of corporate

governance and administrative efficiency

along with the Government’s objective

to attract foreign capital and talent and

further enhance its status as a leading

generally performing well despite the

Stepping into Cambodia

The Jardine Matheson Group has taken its first major step into

MINDSET Funds Ongoing Support for Sichuan Earthquake Victims

A group of four school principals,

four students and a school social

worker from Sichuan Province

have visited Hong Kong on a week-

long exchange programme jointly

organized by MINDSET and The

Hong Kong Polytechnic University

(PolyU). The visit was part of

MINDSET’s ongoing sponsorship and

involvement with PolyU in supporting

the physical, psychological and social

development of students affected

by the devastating earthquake in

Sichuan on 12th May, 2008.

Most recently, the Expanded School

Mental Health (ESMH) Network

project has been established with a

three-year donation from MINDSET

to provide integrated services for

students at four schools in the

disaster-stricken areas of Wenchuan

and Mianzhu. Using a multi-

disciplinary approach it aims to help

the schools, families and community.

It also hopes to train a pool of mental

health professionals and establish

the ESMH as a model for Sichuan and

mainland China as a whole.

During the exchange visit, the visiting

principals shared their experiences

at a seminar attended by some 140

Hong Kong school and mental health

professionals and spent time at local

schools. Jardine Ambassadors were

also involved. They accompanied the

students to Hong Kong Disneyland

and to watch the firing of the Noonday

Gun. In addition, the governors of

MINDSET hosted a breakfast for the

party at Jardine House.

“Being with the students helped

us to recognize something of the

impact of the earthquake on the

mental health of individuals,” said

Jardine Ambassador Catherine Lam of

Dairy Farm.

Launch of Latest Health in Mind Programme

A new milestone has been established

in the development of the Health in

Mind programme with the setting up

of a two-tier structure for the latest

academic year 2009/10.

The nine schools that participated

in the programme last academic

year have moved into their second

year while ten new schools have

been recruited to join the first year

programme. Together with students

from four schools that have been

in the programme for more than

three years, there are currently 23

participating schools.

Students new to Health

at Kwai Chung Hospital

Francis Woo, where

they were taught skills

in communicating with

people with mental

illnesses. After the

workshops, students

visited various

facilities of Kwai Chung

outlets and the public.

Altogether HK$800,000 was raised to

support MINDSET and Benji’s Centre,

which provides professional speech

therapy to children from low income

families. The campaign followed

the success of Dairy Farm’s 2008

JUMP Festival.

CARE 2009 was launched with an

Astra Daihatsu Motor Demonstrates Corporate Responsibility

The head of Teluk Jambe Timur Community Health Center checks the health of a senior resident of Sukaluyu Village in Karawang as part of Astra Daihatsu Motor’s ‘Get Healthy with Daihatsu’ initiative.

As an expression of concern for the

community and as part of its ongoing

corporate social responsibility

programme, Astra Daihatsu Motor

(ADM) has implemented two

initiatives.

‘Get Healthy with Daihatsu’ took the

form of a free medical check-up camp

for residents of Sukaluyu Village in

Karawang. A medical team comprising

four physicians from Teluk Jambe

Timur Community Health Center,

four pharmacists and village nurses

attended the needs of a total of

governance, more than 1,500

participants set a national

record in the Singapore Book

of Records when they formed

the longest line by interlocking

arms and singing ‘We are

Singapore’. This patriotic song

was donated to the nation by

Dairy Farm in 1987.

In another initiative, Dairy

Farm pledged a ‘Harmony Bag’

containing basic essentials for

Eighteen graduates on the Jardines

In a scenario which re-enacted

Jardines’ 1839 departure from

graduates were put through a series

of physical and mental challenges,

including navigating their way across

land and water. Operating in three

teams, each group had a senior

manager attached who acted as a

leadership coach.

The camp concluded with a major

debriefing session involving several

senior executives, who helped the

trainees draw parallels between

the leadership challenges they had

experienced in the outdoors, with

those in corporate life.

“The overall purpose of the camp was

to create unfamiliar and, at times,

uncomfortable situations whereby the

different functions of leadership and

management were clearly separated,”

said Group Head of Human Resources

Ritchie Bent. “This enabled the

trainees to develop a deeper practical

understanding of each, which they

could then apply on the job.”

Facing the Challenge, Emerging Stronger at Group Human Resources Conference

More than 150 delegates, representing

all businesses within the Jardine

Matheson Group, attended the 2009

Jardine Human Resources Conference

held at Mandarin Oriental, Singapore

with the focus on ‘facing the challenge,

emerging stronger.’

In keeping with previous years, the

first day was devoted to enhancing

general business awareness, with

delegates paying a site visit to

Gammon’s award winning Institute of

Technical Education (ITE) project.

On the second day, for the first time

ever, awards were presented under

the new HR Awards Scheme (HAS),

which aims to identify, share and

reward examples of outstanding HR

practice within the Group. It was

also an opportunity for HR heads to

demonstrate the different ways in

which their activities were adding

value to the business.

Chosen from 32 submissions, Jardine

Schindler’s ‘Technician Certification

Scheme’ took top prize.

“What particularly impressed the

external judges about the Jardine

Schindler initiative was that it provided

an excellent example of an ‘Asian grown’

practice, which has subsequently been

adopted by the global Schindler group,”

explained Group Head of Human

Resources Ritchie Bent.

Group Leadership Coaching Course Helps to Transfer Expertise

An initiative designed to accelerate

the transfer of expertise within the

Jardine Matheson Group has held

its first graduation ceremony.

Over the past 12 months, 16 senior

executives have successfully

completed the three-month Jardine

Leadership Coaching Scheme.

During this period they were taught

a broad selection of skills and

involved in various ‘live’ coaching

assignments.

The initiative is a response to the

onset of the economic downturn

last year when all Group companies

began to look carefully at their costs.

Group Human Resources (GHR) was

no exception and set itself the goal of

reducing its expenditure on external

consultants by 50%.

“We looked at how internal expertise

could be more effectively conveyed to

others and decided one of the answers

lay in coaching, or to be more precise,

in ‘Performance Coaching’, wherein

clearly measurable goals are agreed

with the participant and boss from

the outset,” explained Group Head of

Human Resources Ritchie Bent.

To this end, GHR developed a coaching

process, based on a well-tried

and tested methodology. This has

subsequently proved very successful,

benefitting both the participants and

their businesses.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony

Group Managing Director Anthony

Nightingale said, “The transfer of

expertise across the Group has to be

a major priority when it comes to the

development of our leaders for the

present and future.”Centre: Group Managing Director Anthony Nightingale and top left: Jardine Leadership Coach Facilitator Steve Tait with the first graduates of the initiative.

By engaging with existing customer The Link Management

(The Link) at multiple levels and shaping an offer around

its requirements, Jardine Engineering Corporation (JEC) has

won a major contract to expand its existing operations from

one third of The Link’s premises to the company’s entire

Hong Kong property portfolio.

“This effort required strong co-operation and teamwork

between all levels of JEC from senior management to our

Maintenance & Renovation (M&R) unit and the Human

Capital and Public Relations functions,” explained JEC Chief

Operating Officer S H Wu.

For the next three years, JEC will provide operation and

maintenance of the mechanical ventilation and air-

conditioning systems of The Link properties. This includes

markets, car parks, over 100 shopping centres, and other

premises, serving 40 per cent of Hong Kong’s population.

Having won the initial contract with The Link four years

ago to provide services for one third of its portfolio,

JEC worked on developing relationships with the

company’s management team in order to understand

the challenges they were facing and their plans for the

future of the business. With that knowledge JEC was

able to proactively propose solutions to help The Link

ENTERPRISE AT WORK... Jardine Engineering Corporation

improve operational efficiency while enhancing

standards in its properties. Among these were

the introduction of technology to automate

the operation and monitoring of heating,

ventilation and air-conditioning plant in

properties scattered around Hong Kong, and

the introduction of preventative instead of

breakdown maintenance.

“We also proposed and implemented additional

environmental, health and safety measures

at The Link’s work sites and suggested ways

in which they could improve the standards of

service to their customers,” said Hing-wai Yu,

JEC Operations Director (M&R).

Alongside the management and technical teams, JEC’s

Human Capital and Communications departments

implemented a strategy to enhance their efforts. This

included recognizing that The Link’s high public profile

needed sensitive handling with particular regard to any

changes which might impact its front-line staff.

In order to execute the new contract, JEC recruited more

than 180 new employees to join the 50 staff already in place.

With JEC’s Human Capital and Public Relations functions

playing an important role, this was successfully achieved

over a period of two weeks while under the spotlight of

the media.

Having secured the contract, JEC is continuing to employ

teamwork to help The Link operate its facilities more

effectively while also exploring ways in which JEC can

expand its business under The Link portfolio into areas

such as fire, electrical, building management and

security systems.

“Our aim is to assist our customers in operating their

facilities to a world-class standard and the expansion of

our relationship with The Link is an excellent example of

how teamwork within JEC and with our business partners

can help achieve this goal,” added Alex Newbigging,

JEC Chief Executive.

JEC team effort was instrumental in winning a major contract with The Link.
