Pinal County reminds new voters (or anyone who has changed residence) that they must register by Tuesday, October

10, in order to vote regarding Propositions 416 and 417. These two propositions would establish the Pinal Regional Transportation Plan and fund it through a ½ cent raise in the sales tax. For the first time on a county-wide proposition, voting will be done entirely by mail. There is still provision, however, for personally dropping off the ballot on election day, Tuesday, November 7. An informational mailing regarding the propositions has already gone out in the mail. Additional copies of the brochure are available at Kearny Town Hall, and a large map of the proposed roads and highways is on view there. Bearcats junior quarterback Jaden Pace was injured on the last play of the first half of last Friday’s rivalry game against No. 2 Superior. No update on Pace’s injury status was made available at press time. If and when

one is made available, Copper Basin News will publish it, if permissible. Needless to say, Pace was missed in the game, which was won by Superior, 44 – 0. The Panthers will retain the Copper Helmet for the third-consecutive year as a result. The Copper Helmet is awarded to the winning team in one of the state’s longest-running rivalry games.

The undefeated Panthers also clinched their third-straight Region Championship and the accompanying automatic state playoff berth. Ray entered Friday’s game averaging 55 points per game in its four wins. As it’s been all season, the Superior defense was stellar again, posting its third shutout in as many games. In its

three region victories, Superior has not surrendered a single point, outscoring its opponents 142 – 0 along the way. It allowed a lone first down against the Bearcats and limited them to negative yards of total offense.Up next: NFL Yet Academy at Ray on Friday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The ninth-ranked Lobos rebounded nicely following last week’s shutout loss against Superior by defeating NFL Yet Academy last Friday night, 48 – 14. The Lobos are now 4 – 2 with a pair of games remaining in the regular season. “It was a hard fought battle and we expected no less because NFL Yet was back at full force,” Hayden assistant coach Daniel Cruz wrote in an email to Copper Basin News. “We are finally clicking and taking one game at a time.”

Hayden nearing playoff berth after win With wins in their final two games – at Ft. Thomas and home versus Ray – the Lobos are almost assured of reaching the playoffs for a second-consecutive year.

“In order to make the playoffs we must stay focused on the main things,” Cruz said. “Perfect effort at practice, improve our blocking and tackling

schemes, and remain focused on game night.”Up next: Hayden at Ft. Thomas on Thursday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Next time you’re at Norm’s IGA in Kearny, walk to the back of the store, between the meat and dairy departments, and look up at the mural over the door. It’s a local homage to the Copper Basin, with a view of the Copper Basin Railroad’s tracks stretching to Teapot Mountain. A large clock is a strong element of the design. The mural is by Kearny artist Jennifer Cude, and we thank her for her powerful vision. Norm’s IGA is becoming a

tourist destination all on its own! I haven’t picked up on much new in the region this week. By the time you read this, I will have attended the Diocesan Convention of the Episcopal Church in Scottsdale as well as a two-day work session with the Smithsonian Institution at the Amerind Foundation in Dragoon. Next week I hope to return with some good news from ASARCO and more on events around the Copper Basin.
