Letter, Professional Job Interview, Grade 11 Research Writing Assignment, and satisfactory completion of all Job Shadowing activities and written responses. Students are not only responsible for submitting each of these assignments in the classes in which they are assigned, but also for meeting with the teacher of record for this course, to confirm their success and gain clearance for graduation.

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Semester based class. Drawing is a basic course for students who wish to improve skills and attitude about drawing. Media such as pencils, ink, crayon, charcoal, and pastel will be explored. Elements and principals of design and composition are emphasized. Pre-requisite: 2D Design and Lab fee $10.

CERAMICS 1 Course # - 004 Credit - 0.5

Grade Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Ceramics is an introduction to clay as utilitarian and sculptural three-dimensional form. Students are introduced to various hand building and glazing techniques;

students will spend some time on wheel-throwing. Students wishing to continue and advance with ceramics should take Advanced 3D Media the corresponding semester. Pre-requisite: $10 Lab fee.

3D DESIGN Course # - 023 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: 3D Design is an introduction to sculpture as 3 dimensional form. The first marking period focuses on ceramics as a 3D art form. Students are introduced to hand

building, wheel throwing, and glazing techniques. The second marking period focuses on the use of materials such as plaster, plastic, tape, foam, wood, recyclables, etc. to create 3 dimensional artwork.

Requirement: Lab fee $10.

ADVANCED 3D MEDIA 2 Course # - 020 Credit - 0.5

2D DESIGN Course # - 022 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Semester based class. 2D Design is an entry level introduction course to all two-dimensional art. Students will explore various mediums in drawing, painting, and printmaking while heavily focusing on design elements and principles. Students wishing to continue in other two-dimensional art classes must take this class. This is a pre-requisite for Drawing, Painting and Advanced 2D Media.

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This class produces the backdrops and props for the JBHS musical. It involves painting on a large scale, sign painting, and making various props. It is preferred that students have some background in art, whether 3D Design or Drawing and Painting.

Grades Available: 11,12 Course Description: This class produces the backdrops and props for the JBHS musical. It involves painting on a large scale, sign painting, and making various props. ART EXTENSION Course # - 026 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 11,12 Course Description: This class is designed for students wishing to aid the teacher and Adaptive Art students with the construction and completion of art projects. To be accepted in the class, students MUST apply with the teacher.

ADAPTIVE ART Course # - 025 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This class is an art class designed for life skills students. A variety of art techniques and mediums will be covered. This class is scheduled ONLY by the

coordinating teacher.

MUSIC CLASSES:

BAND Course # - 065 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This course is designed to maximize the students' knowledge and appreciation of the art of music. Through public performance and regular rehearsal, students

will study all facets of the art of music and how it relates to the human experience. Activities - The Rocket Band performs many times throughout the school year. Although these may vary, the performances generally include: all home and most away football games, and several parades, (Marching Band); a mid-winter concert and a spring concert (Concert Band), commencement exercises, school assemblies, and other exchange programs and festivals. In addition to group activities, students may wish to participate in county, regional, district, and state band auditions. Other activities include small ensembles, pep band, and stage band for those students willing to make the commitment. Rehearsal Schedules - These vary in accordance with the amount of public performances the Rocket Band conducts. In the fall, rehearsals are during first period and some after school as required. In the spring, rehearsals are first period with an occasional special rehearsal. All regular and special rehearsals are required attendance (see the JBHS Rocket Band Handbook of information). In addition, all students will schedule one lesson per week. General Information - The JBHS Rocket Band Handbook of information (published yearly) contains a course requirement description (i.e. evaluation, attendance, etc.). In addition to a summer band camp in August, the Rocket Band will have occasional summer rehearsals. Students who select band will be required to attend all rehearsals and concerts (outside of school) to receive a complete grade and credit for the class. Specific questions should be directed to the band director.



BAND FRONT S1 Course # - 066 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: The band front includes a flag line, rifle line, color guard, and majorettes. The band front is open to any student (male or female) who qualifies by means of

audition. The band front appears in all marching band performances and travels with the marching band. Students who select band front will be required to attend all rehearsals and marching band performances outside of school to receive a complete grade and credit for the class. Students are admitted to the band front after demonstrating their proficiency with various equipment. The band front is active during the first semester and rehearses five (5) periods per week with the band, as well as several after school practices each week as needed. The Band Front has the same requirements (as per the JBHS Rocket Band Handbook of information) as the Rocket Band.

ORCHESTRA Course # - 068 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Orchestra is offered to students who show minimal proficiency in playing a violin, viola, cello, or string bass. The class meets five (5) days a week and works toward improving each player's individual ability and toward developing a performing ensemble. Winds, percussion and/or piano are used as needed. The group will perform in two or three (2-3) concerts each year plus special activities. Students who select orchestra will be required to attend scheduled dress rehearsals and all concerts (outside of school) to receive a complete grade and credit for the class. Specific questions should be directed to the orchestra director.

CHORUS Course # - 070 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: The high school chorus is offered to students who are interested in singing and who demonstrate a minimal level of ability through an audition. Music from a

wide variety of styles with both sacred and secular texts is performed. Concerts are given each year before Christmas, in the winter and in the spring. Additional auditioned groups include Messa Voce, Cantabile and Octet. Specific questions should be directed to the choral director. Pre-requisite: Previous experience singing solo and/or choral literature and/or by audition.

BAND/CHORUS Course # - 072 Credit - 1.25

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: * BAND and CHORUS both meet during a single period at JBHS. It is possible for students to select any two or all three of these classes. Because of the additional time and preparation required, 1.25 credits are awarded for students who are in two of these performing groups.

MESSA VOCE Course # - 073 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Messa Voce is an auditioned, select vocal ensemble that is offered to our students. Messa Voce performs a wide variety of music with both sacred and secular text, with and without choreography and/or choreography to a high degree. Members must be willing to commit to the following: • Be a member of chorus • Rehearse before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings throughout the school year • Learn and participate in the District 7 Chorus Auditions • Perform for school and community events in addition to regularly scheduled concerts

• Purchase necessary wardrobe items to coordinate with the school owned wardrobe Specific questions about Messa Voce should be directed to the vocal music director. Pre-Requisite: Previous experience singing solo and/or choral literature and by audition only.



MUSIC THEORY 1 Course # - 075 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This course is designed to study the mechanics of music: focusing on intervals, scale structure, chords, music dictation, and sight singing.

Pre-requisite: Students must posses' knowledge of and playing experience on a wind or string instrument, piano, guitar or keyboard percussion.

MUSIC APPRECIATION Course # - 078 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Music Appreciation will follow the growth of music and will cover the earliest chants through centuries of development to the music of today including modern

works and popular music. The purpose is to study the various forms and styles of music and to examine their interrelationships. The course is designed for students in Grades 9 through 12 who are interested in listening to and understanding music of all styles. No previous experience required.

SOUND/LIGHTING Course # - 081 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This course is designed to teach basic sound and lighting system components, their functions, proper set-up and tear down procedures, use as well as basic troubleshooting and repair. Students will design lighting for various performance settings and will be required to assist with sound and lighting for a minimum of four (4) school and evening performances throughout the school year. Pre-requisite: Previous sound system and/or lighting system experience required. Experience may be minimal and could include, but is not limited, to the following settings: school, community, band, DJ or house of worship. Written documentation confirming previous experience is required.

SONG AND POETRY Course # - 082 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This course is designed to study the history, poetry (text) and musical structure of art songs and choral works from the medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, early twentieth century and late twentieth century periods. The course will also include the study of popular songs; including history, lyrics and musical structure. Students will be required to write original poetry, lyrics, and music. Pre-requisite: None; however being able to play ukulele, guitar and/or piano would be very helpful in the song writing process.

AP MUSIC THEORY Course # - 076 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 10,11,12 Course Description: This course is designed to study the mechanics of music notation: focusing on meter, scales, major keys, minor keys, modes, intervals, triads, seventh chords,

counterpoint, four part writing, dominant sevenths, embellishing tones, etc.; and to implement the mechanics of music through music dictation, and sight singing.

Pre-Requisite: Students must posses’ knowledge of and playing experience on a wind or string instrument, piano, guitar or keyboard percussion. For 10th, 11th, and 12th grade

students.



BUSINESS CLASSES:

ACCOUNTING 1 Course # - 111 Credit – 1.0

Grades Available: 10,11,12 Course Description: Accounting is an excellent foundation course for students who plan to enroll in accounting or related business programs in college as well as for those students who plan to enter the business world upon high school graduation. Students learn the theory of accounting and receive practice in recording business transactions. Students will prepare financial statements and determine how much profit a business making. A real-life simulation involving the preparation of records for a small business is included. Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to use online working papers.

ACCOUNTING 2 Course # - 109 Credit – 1.0

Grades Available: 10,11,12 Course Description: This advanced accounting course presents the complete accounting cycle for a merchandising business organized as a corporation. The course includes

journalizing purchases, cash payments, sales and cash receipts using special journals. Other new accounting concepts include accounting for uncollectible accounts receivable, plant assets and depreciation, notes and interest, accrued items and inventory. A real-life simulation involving the preparation of records for a corporation is included. Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to use online working papers. Pre-requisite: Teacher recommendation required.

PERSONAL FINANCE Course # - 149 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This course will provide an understanding for making important life decisions. Topics covered include gross and net pay, checking accounts, taxes, budgeting, buying and insuring a house and a car, establishing and maintaining good credit, savings and investments as well as retirement planning.

WEB PAGE DESIGN Course # - 155 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Web Design is an introductory course for students who are interested in creating professionally designed websites. The first part of the course is dedicated to

creating websites using Google Sites. The second part of the course is dedicated to using programming languages (HTML and CSS) to produce a website.

SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT MKTG Course # - 113 Credit – 1.0

Grades Available: 10,11,12 Course Description: This is an introductory marketing course designed to incorporate business and marketing principles and procedures into the sports and entertainment industries.

Students will learn and integrate the concepts of marketing, the marketing mix, public relations, career choices, profit, basic economics, staffing and using technology to effectively run and operate marketing functions in the sports and entertainment industries. Students will work individually and cooperatively to complete assignments and projects using the Internet and various computer technologies. In addition, students will work cooperatively to cover home varsity sporting events throughout the year for the High School. The student groups will produce highlight videos of the events as well as create articles for the Mercersburg Journal.

SPORTS & ENTER MKTG 2 Course # - 116 Credit – 1.0

Grades Available: 11,12 Course Description: This course will expand on the introductory Sports and Entertainment Marketing Course. Students will produce a weekly “Sportscenter” style show highlighting the sports events at James Buchanan High School. In addition, students will be assigned home games in which they will be tasked with creating promotions to encourage ticket sales and school spirit. Select games throughout the year will also be “broadcasted” with students doing play by play and color commentating.



Pre-requisites for this course: Completion of Sports and Entertainment Marketing 1 with a “B” average.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP Course # - 114 Credit – 1.0

Grades Available: 10,11,12 Course Description: This course is designed for those students who wish to learn how to run and manage a business. The course begins with a discussion of the private enterprise system and the role of the consumer and producer. Topics include selecting a location, raising capital, organizing operations, establishing service and credit policies, buying merchandise, preparing goods for sale, pricing, advertising, display, selling techniques, keeping accurate records, economics and government regulations. Students will do individualized assignments from the textbook as well as group and individual projects. This is an excellent course for students who think they would like to start or manage a business.

FRENCH 1 (ASYNCH) Course # - C1 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This course is asynchronous. Students begin their introduction to French by focusing on the four key areas of foreign language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course represents an ideal blend of language learning pedagogy and online learning. Each unit consists of a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking and writing activities, multimedia cultural presentations, and interactive activities and practices which reinforce vocabulary and grammar. There is a strong emphasis on providing context and conversational examples for the language concepts presented in each unit. Each unit consists of a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, reading comprehension activities, writing activities, multimedia culture, history, and mythology presentations, and interactive activities and practices which reinforce vocabulary and grammar. through their music. The course begins with an overview of ways to examine world music as a cultural phenomenon. The goal of this section is to help students move beyond their

preconceived understanding of music in order to open their minds and ears to a wide variety of music through a selection of case studies, including, but not limited to, the music of

the Celtic nations, the African continent, West Asia (the Middle East), India, Indonesia, Japan, and the Native American culture groups. The music of these cultures is explored both as

a product and reflection of culture and as an aesthetic art form. Through this approach students not only develop a basic fluency in the characteristics of selected world musics, but

also gain a broader understanding of the general classifications and geographical divisions of world music and the ways in which music relates to and is a part of all world cultures.

Two primary methods of evaluation are used. Four examinations test the students' understanding of the material. Two assigned reaction/research papers provide students with the

opportunity to explore particular types of music in greater depth, examining both the music itself and the social context in which it is found. These papers require students a) to think

actively about contemporary musical developments around the world, including how they are affected by current socio-political events and cultural trends; and b) to utilize resources

available in the university library as a way of exploring these developments. World musics are best understood when students engage in the music and in discussions of the music and

Composition of this course will include classification, life history, and anatomy and physiology of the major animal invertebrate phyla; sponges, worms, mollusks, cnidarians (jellyfish etc.), arthropods, and echinoderms and an introduction into general classification of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. PHYSICS Course # - 870 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 11,12 Course Description: An opportunity to explore energy and the conservation laws that govern our universe, one/two dimensional motion, velocity, acceleration, projectile motion, Newton’s Law’s through the study of motion, acceleration, and force. Also a chance to study force, velocity changes, net-forces, applied forces, and acceleration, as well as a study of motion, mass, velocity, force of gravity, and collision. Simple harmonic motion will be presented through the study of periodic motion, frequency, amplitude, and kinetic energy. The study of wave motion and sound, longitudinal and transverse waves, constructive and destructive interference, sound and water waves are included. Other concepts such as electromagnetism, electrical circuits, magnetism, light, thermodynamics, relativity, radioactivity, nuclear physics, standard model of particle physics and quantum mechanics are all covered in this intensive study. Pre-requisite: A/B in Algebra 2 and Geometry with a math teacher’s recommendation.

FORENSIC SCIENCE Course # - 873 Credit - 0.5

Forensic science utilizes a combination of the scientific method and deductive reasoning to discover and document physical evidence at the scene of a crime, in order to construct a re-enactment of the crime performance.

Grades Available: 10,11,12 Course Description: General Elective for those who have successfully completed Biology. This semester course will examine forensic lab techniques. It will examine topics in areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Some specific topics that will be explored will be DNA fingerprinting, bite mark analysis, anthropology, arson investigation, ballistics and tool mark analysis. Case studies, laboratory activities and simulations will be the basis of the course.

Course Description: Do you have a pet, maybe a dog or cat, hamster or bird? Interested in small animal veterinarian care? This course is definitely for you! Students will learn about the care, health, reproduction, feeding and handling of small animals. The class will work directly with small animals and simulations on the care of diagnosis of small animals. Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This class develops all aspects of Horticulture industry. Students will learn about soil science, plant science, floriculture, plant propagation, greenhouse

production, and landscape management. Students will produce a greenhouse crop, design flower arrangements and centerpieces and do work. Students will also be working on landscaping and using the CADD system in layout design. HORTICULTURE 2 Course # - 922 Credit - 1.0

Grades Available: 10,11,12 Course Description: This is an advanced class in Horticulture in which students will gain more hands on experience in floral design using fresh cut, dried and other floral media.

They will work intensely in the greenhouse crops such as bedding plants and vegetable plants. Students will also design and create landscape displays. Students will also gain knowledge of the retail sale business of the Horticulture industry. Pre-requisite: Horticulture 1 and Instructor approval. INTRO TO AG SCIENCE Course # - 900 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: This course is designed to teach essential concepts and understanding related to plant and animal life including biotechnology, the conservation of natural

resources, and the impact of agriculture and natural resource utilization on the environment. Emphasis is placed on the role of agriculture in our society and the importance of agriculture to the welfare of the world. Basic personal and community leadership and safety, and agricultural mechanical technology are included as a part of the instructional program. Each student is expected to design and participate in a supervised agricultural experience as well as the agriscience fair. Typical learning activities include hands-on learning experiences including performing basic principles of plant, soil, and animal science; studying and modeling the significance of humankind’s interrelationship with soil, water, and air; FFA Career Development Event participation is encouraged.

SUP AG EXPERIENCE Course # - 925 Credit - 0.5

Grades Available: 9,10,11,12 Course Description: Students will complete the FFA SAE program record keeping system in employment, entrepreneurship, research, home improvement, or conservation. Students must also complete a Proficiency application. Students must be dues paying FFA members and will be assigned to the FFA homeroom. Work will take place during activity period, student free periods, or outside of school. Pre-requisite: Dues paying FFA member and Ag teacher signature.
