This cemetery was washed out, thenbulldozed in 1978 during road repair and culvert replacement following aflooding. The workers clearly did not recognize a toppled gravestone there, andthe area is now quite swampy due to changes in drainage patterns. The Barnet Hist. Soc. published a map in 1975 calling it the East HillCemetery and locating it in the northeast corner of the intersection -- but theirsite locations were only approximate and never intended to be exact. Thislocation was razed by the skidders conducting logging operations ab. 2001.

BOVEE.*

This is a Dutch name, and the family is said to have come to Barnet andDanville from New York State, first appearing on the Barnet Grand List in1814. Their choice of this section for residence, so far from any of their ownpeople was no doubt based on the advice of Jacob's father-in-law who hadarrived from Middleboro, Mass. some years before q. v. (p. 586).

[[I am not, personally, totally convinced that Jacob1 is the son of Gerrit(Antonie, Mathias); but, evidence does point to the POSSIBILITY that heMIGHT be; although there is no proof. He also MAY be the son of a Bovee thatlived in the Boston area of Massachusetts.]]

Farmed near the Danville/Peacham/Cabot line and was part owner (withWm. McLaren, Claud Somers, and 3 others) of the Barnet Woolen ManufacturingCo. until abt 1862 q. v. (p. 206). The retired Peacham Town Clerk [Lorna (Field) Quimby] remembers visiting asmall, unkept cemetery near the Barnet/Peacham line across the road fromMoses S.'s uncle Moses R. Bovee's place (where J. C. Whitcher lived in 1875).She recalls at least one stone, with engraving, very close to the road, in thesoutheast corner of the intersection. This cemetery was washed out, thenbulldozed in 1978 during road repair and culvert replacement following aseverly heavy rain storm which caused a 100 years' flooding in this area. Theworkers clearly did not recognize a toppled gravestone there. The Barnet Hist.Soc. published a map in 1975 calling it the East Hill Cemetery and locating itin the northeast corner of the intersection -- but their site locations were only

Page 9: JACOB and ELIZABETH (Redding) BOVEE Founders of the Bovee

approximate and never intended to be exact. This location was razed by theskidders conducting logging operations ab. 2001. A 1954 Map by the PeachamHistorical Society shows the cemetery on the site of Moses' house; a newhouse sits there now; DW recalls seeing gravestones, 200 yards further, east50 years ago.
