Welcome to the party! My mom turned 70 the same year my daughter turned 7— and I stood between them and watched how they were funny in different ways…that’s how this show began. By watching my Mom who is freer and funnier in her 70s than she’s ever been, and my daughter Lily who is figuring out how she’s funny by imitating the 3 Stooges and Carol Burnett and her parents. By watching my friends and myself who, as we march through our 40s and approach our 50s, all seem to have developed this Bette-Davis-in-All-About-Eve style snarky sense of humor that we’ve never had—or perhaps needed—before, I asked myself— as women age and transform, does their humor do so as well?

What emerged over the course of a two-year investigation of this question is this show— a series of three parties, three forms of humor. Humor that gets us attention, humor that saves our lives, and humor that frees us. Interviewing and conducting workshops with women of all ages and backgrounds, I heard stories that made me laugh and gasp and cry and think and ache and smile. I am so very grateful to all of them for sharing their humor and their hearts. This party would not have been possible without them.

Melanie Cotton (Ensemble): A Philadelphia native, Melanie Cotton enrolled in the prestigious Freedom Theater School of Performing Arts where she studied dance and participated in the youth acting program where she discovered her affinity for Theater. Influenced by everything from Broadway to Motown, hip hop is where Melanie was best able to express her passion for performance. In 2003 she became a principal dancer for Philadelphia’s all female Hip-Hop dance company, Montazh Performing Arts. This is where she

developed her unique Funk Style and a passion for experimenting with dance. Her choreography has been featured on stage, in music videos, in commercial ads and flash mobs. Not limited to dance, Melanie has performed in productions with local theater companies around Philadelphia. Currently, Melanie is a dancer with Hip-Hop Theater company, Rennie Harris: Puremovement. With Puremovement she is performing and teaching around the world.

Charlotte Ford (Ensemble): Charlotte Ford is a Philadelphia-based theatre artist who creates avant-garde slapstick performance art that celebrates sublime stupidity with joyful abandon. Original work produced by The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival includes Flesh and Blood & Fish and Fowl (Edinburgh Fringe First 2010, shortlisted for Total Theatre Award), CHICKEN, and Bang. She has toured her original work to Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre, the London Barbican, Paris Festival D’été, and St. Etienne’s Festival de Sept Collines.

Collaborations include Pig Iron Theatre (Welcome to Yuba City), Lucidity Suitcase, Rainpan 43, Theatre Exile (Gruesome Playground Injuries, That Pretty Pretty, Red Light Winter), 1812 (Cherry Bomb {Philadelphia Weekly’s “Best Supporting Actress in a Musical}), Arden Theatre, Lantern Theater, and New Paradise Laboratories, among others. Nominated for four Barrymore awards. “Best of Philly Theatre Talent 2012,” Philadelphia Magazine. 2011 & 2012 Finalist for the F. Otto Haas Award. In development: 2014 Fringe Arts clown solo about death. BA, Bryn Mawr College. MFA, LISPA.

Drucie McDaniel (Ensemble): From Drucie’s grown-up daughter (M) and son (C): (I had this dream that I became my mother… I was wearing…) M: a purple flannel shirt, green stretch pants, gold boots and big-ass sunglasses/C: A scarf, earrings, the dazzle-er the better, boots and a long skirt. (I had…) M: a glass of Irish whiskey with a straw…always with a straw. (I kept saying…) M: “I love (in a drunken slur) you!”/C: “Which earrings go better? Black and dangly or red and cuh-rayzayy?” (And I had this sudden

desire to…) M: kick off my gold boots and just dance. Just let any stress, worry, anxiety, sadness or anger…just roll away./C: …to fluff out my hair one last time, proudly huff and say, “Okay, here I go!” then walk out into the unknown. But not without hugging my entire family first.// (P.S.: Drucie has done a lot of film, television, and theatre—come to The Rosenbach on June 16th to hear her Molly Bloom. She sings Irish music with The Connemara Codfish Company and teaches acting at a bunch of places. She is thrilled to return to 1812 after way too long, is unbelievably honored to be part of this amazing Party and is grateful to everyone at it. LOVE TO MMCG!!!)

Bi Jean Ngo (Ensemble): Bi Jean Ngo used to dream about being a spy so she could pretend to be other people, speak with foreign accents, wear glamorous outfits, and play with expensive props. So, she became an actress. She has scaled walls, flown to Neverland, rated securities, lived in a giant shoe, flash forwarded through fifty years of a marriage, and shot a BB gun on stages across Philadelphia that include Arden Theatre, InterAct, Theatre Confetti, Theatre Horizon, and now 1812. Bi is an actress, a writer, a teaching artist, a

cook, and an aunt. She'd like to express her gratitude to all those who have given her work, fed her, hugged her, shared a bottle of wine and a laugh with her. Special props to her Mommy.

Cathy Simpson (Ensemble): Cathy Simpson is a company member of the People’s Light and Theatre Company. She is also a member of the “Freedom Rising” Company at the NCC. Her work in some local theatres includes InterAct, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, Hedgerow Theatre, Arden Theatre, Theatre Horizon, Wilma Theater, and Flashpoint Theatre. Regional theater credits include Arena Stage, The Kennedy Center, Studio Theatre, Source Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, Olney Theatre Center,

St. Louis Black Rep, St. Louis Rep, Indiana Rep. Cathy is a three-time Barrymore Award nominee and a winner for the Freedom Theatre production of The Old Settler, and a Kevin Kline Award winner for St. Louis Black Rep’s production of A Song for Coretta. She has also been nominated twice for the Helen Hayes Awards in Washington D.C. and won the Best Performer Award in Toyama, Japan. Cathy was a return performer to the Montgomery Community College “Lively Arts Festival” in the one woman show Zora, this past February.

Susan Riley Stevens (Ensemble): Susan is deliriously happy to be partying again with1812!! Also with 1812; This Is The Week That Is, First Day of School, and The Uneasy Chair. Cheryl Williams (Ensemble): Cheryl is truly honored to be part of this gifted ensemble, and to work with Jen and the entire creative team for It’s My Party, her debut performance with 1812. Recent local credits: Eunice in The Exit Interview (InterAct Theatre), Leonato (broadwayworld.com nomination) in Mauckingbird’s gender-bend-ing production of Much Ado About Nothing, the Nurse in Anouilh’s Antigone (Quintessence Theatre), Grace in Pterodactyls (New City Stage), Francis in The Breath of Life (Lantern Theater/Barrymore

Award winner), and Respect: The Musical Journey of Women (Act II Playhouse/Society Hill/Phoenix tour). Cheryl is an adjunct acting instructor at Temple University and was in the Oscar-nominated film Silver Linings Playbook. Jennifer Childs (Creator/Director): Jen is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of 1812 Productions, Philadelphia’s all comedy theater company. For 1812 she has written and directed The Big Time, Another Big Time, Like Crazy Like Wow (1950s Nightclub comedy), Something Wonderful Right Away, Always A Lady, Double Down, This Is The Week That Is, Let’s Pretend We’re Married, Our Show of Shows, and, in collaboration with composer James Sugg, the original musical Cherry Bomb. Her solo show, Why I’m Scared of

Dance by Jen Childs, was recently produced at City Theatre in Pittsburgh and Act II Playhouse in Ambler, PA. In addition to her work at 1812, she has performed and/or directed for Wilma Theater, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Walnut Street Theatre, Arden Theatre Company, Prince Music Theatre, Mum Puppettheatre, Act II Playhouse, Lenape Regional Performing Arts Center, Lantern Theater Company, Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival, and ComedySportz. She is a two-time Barrymore Award winner including the 1999 F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Theatre Artist. She is the recipient of two Independence Foundation Fellowships in the Arts and serves on the Mayor’s Cultural Advisory Council.

Hillary Rea (Assistant Director): Hillary Rea is a comedian, storyteller and host of the monthly storytelling shows Tell Me A Story and Fibber. She is a recent Moth StorySlam winner and performs regularly with First Person Arts. Hillary has been featured on the stage of Animated Stories and Tales of the Cosmos (Upright Citizen’s Brigade), The Soundtrack Series, RISK!, SpeakeasyDC, and Comedy Dreamz. She has performed in comedy festivals including Philly Sketchfest, First Person Festival, and the North

Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. Hillary was a 2011 Artist-in-Residence for Elsewhere Artist Collaborative in Greensboro, NC.


Monica Stephenson (Musical Director): While she currently lives in Pittsburgh, Monica has spent many years living and working as part of Philadelphia’s talented theatre community. As a vocalist, composer, theatre artist, and teacher, she often makes the turnpike trek between the two cities. Monica is a graduate of Duquesne University School of Music and has had the pleasure of working with such companies as The Pittsburgh Opera Company, Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre, Unseam’d Shakespeare Co., 1812 Productions,

and Philadelphia Young Playwrights. She is currently the Education Director for Prime Stage Theatre Company and is a musical theater instructor for H.O.P.E Academy in Pittsburgh. Harriet Power (Dramatrug): Harriet is thrilled to be back at 1812, where she previously had the singular honor of directing Why I’m Scared of Dance by Jen Childs (also at Pittsburgh’s City Theatre and Ambler’s Act II Playhouse). Recent directing: Three Sisters at Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre (“Best Theatre Experience 2012” & “Best Production”); the American premiere of Muswell Hill at Villanova, where she’s a Professor of Theatre/Head of Graduate Directing and an Adjunct Professor of Law; and at Act II Playhouse, where she was Associate Artistic Director 2008-12, The Mystery of Irma Vep, Sylvia, The Pride of Parnell Street, The Tempest, Any Given Monday (Barrymore Award, Best New Play), Boeing-Boeing, etc. She and husband Robert Hedley, head of MFA Playwriting at Temple University, researched new-play production in London; their article “Over There” was published Dec. 2012 in American Theatre. Being part of It’s My Party with the brilliant Jen Childs, these glorious actors, and the great 1812 team has been unforgettably joyous.


Joshua L. Schulman (Lighting Designer): Joshua was the 2008 winner of the Barrymore Award for his lighting of ART at Delaware Theatre Company. He was also a 2009 Barrymore Award nominee for his lighting of Rock N’ Roll at Wilma Theater. Joshua is currently the designer for the PIFA Time Machine in the lobby of the Kimmel Center. Regionally, Joshua has designed at People’s Light and Theatre, Wilma Theater, Arden Theatre, Delaware Theatre Company. Joshua was also the lighting director for the Hidden City Festival in 2009. Other companies that Joshua has worked for include Azuka Theatre, InterAct Theatre Company, Theatre Exile, Flashpoint Theatre Company, Media Theatre Company, Theatre West Virginia, Seven Stages (Atlanta), Rebecca Davis Dance Company, in addition to many others. Joshua was also the programmer for both the relighting of Boat House Row along the Schuylkill River as well as the Cira Centre. Joshua lives in South Philadelphia with his wife Karen and their son Elijah.

Lance Kniskern (Scenic Designer): Lance has been working in the Philadelphia area as a freelance scenic artist, carpenter, and designer for the past twelve years. Recent design credits include Hairspray: The Musical with Media Theater (Broadway World’s winner for Best Set Design in Philadelphia for 2012) and Bloody Blood Andrew Jackson with Plays & Players. In June, he will be designing the set for the American Premiere of Oleksander Irvantes’ A Little Play About Betrayal in Walnut Studio Five.

Michael Kiley (Sound Designer): Michael Kiley is a sound designer, composer, performer, and educator working in dance, theater, and public installation. He is the founder of The Mural and The Mint, a free music project dedicated to experimental recordings and performances. Most recently, TM&TM released The Empty Air, an iPhone application for Rittenhouse Square which uses GPS to determine what you hear depending on your location. He is a company member of Nichole Canuso Dance, and is currently working on their new project, The Garden (Fall 2013). His work has been supported by The Independence Foundation, American Composers Forum, and Pennsylvania Cultural Alliance.

Rosemarie McKelvey (Costume Designer): Rosemarie is delighted to be designing costumes for It’s My Party. Previous designs for 1812 include Laughter on the 23rd Floor and Karma Cookie. Locally, Rosemarie designs costumes for Arden Theatre, Wilma Theater, People’s Light and Theatre Company, The National Constitution Center, New Paradise Laboratories, Theatre Exile, and InterAct. Rosemarie is on the teaching staff of The University of the Arts and Moore College of Art & Design. Rosemarie was awarded the 2007 and 2009 Barrymore Awards for Costume Design. Avista Custom Theatrical Services (Properties): Avista Custom Theatrical Services, LLC was founded in 2007 as a properties design and construction firm. Avista specializes in custom construction, upholstery, and soft goods construction, and also owns a 7,000 square foot rental house in Norristown filled with props and lighting equipment. Avista’s work has been seen at Azuka Theatre, Flashpoint Theatre, Theatre Horizon, Mauckingbird, Act II Playhouse, Theatre Exile, Bristol Riverside Theatre, Burlington County College, and Drexel University. Georgia Schlessman (Production Manager): Georgia Schlessman is thrilled to be in her new role as 1812’s Production Manager. Georgia has been working with 1812 for the past six years in varying capacities, including 20 shows as 1812’s Assistant Stage Manager. Previous shows with 1812 include: Dave & Aaron Go To Work, Mistakes Were Made, Our Show Of Shows, all seven This Is The Week productions, Search For Signs, and Suburban Love Songs. Georgia is a graduate of the Arden Professional Apprenticeship (2004–2005 season) and holds bachelor degrees in Visual Media: Digital Imaging, and Theatre: Performance Track from American University. She has seven years of professional experience as a freelance theatre artist in the Philadelphia area.

Ashley Esterline (Assistant Production Manager): Ashley is very excited to be the Assistant Production Manager for 1812 Productions. Previous shows with 1812 include: Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Our Show of Shows, Mistakes Were Made, This Is The Week That Is (2011), and Boston Marriage. Ashley moved to Philadelphia for an apprenticeship at Walnut Street Theatre after graduating from Penn State University with a degree in Film/Video and a minor in Theater. Britt Plunkett / Campbell Studios (Technical Director): Britt Plunkett / Campbell Studios have been professionally involved with several theatre companies, both locally and internationally, since 1996. Credits include InterAct Theatre, Pig Iron Theatre, Gas and Electric Arts, Living Arts Theatre, Gravity Works Theatre, Contemporary Stage Company, Delaware Theatre Company, Act II Playhouse, 1812 Productions, Flashpoint Theatre, and Entertainment Events. Britt is also co-artistic director of insperado, an initiative based theatre company dedicated to producing multi-media, multi-medium works that push the audience to experience theatre in new and exciting ways. Britt resides in South Philly with his lovely wife, Kelly.

Lucas Nguyen (Master Electrician): Lucas Nguyen is a Philadelphia-based theater technician and actor. He has worked, in various positions, at theatres in the city such as Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, Plays & Players, Theatre Horizon, Theatre Exile, and Wilma Theater, as well as Delaware Shakespeare Festival, Delaware Theatre Company, and the Resident Ensemble Players at University of Delaware. Thomas E. Shotkin (Stage Manager): Tom is enjoying his 11th season as production stage manager. Favorite shows include: This Is The Week That Is (all 7!), Our Show of Shows, Cherry Bomb, Suburban Love Songs, The Four of Us, Batboy: The Musical, Like Crazy Like Wow, and An Evening Without Woody Allen (in which he performed). He is also production manager for PlayPenn. Other SM credits: Arena Stage, Theatre Exile, People’s Light and Theatre, Arden Theatre Company, Barnstormers Theatre (NH), Act II Playhouse. Kate Sabato (Assistant Stage Manager): Kate Sabato is delighted to be back with 1812 (Suburban Love Songs, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Our Show of Shows, assorted This Is The Week’s). This is her eighth season as a Philadelphia-area theater technician; she can also be found behind the scenes at Arden Theatre and Walnut Street Theatre. She is proud to be the Wardrobe Supervisor for Upper Darby Summer Stage. Love and thanks to Karlis and her family—especially Mama.

Kate Tejada (Managing Director): This season Kate celebrates 10 years and her eleventh season as Managing Director of 1812. She started her arts administration career at Arden Theatre Company and also worked for the Philadelphia Live Arts/Philly Fringe Festivals. She serves on the Board of Directors for 1812 and served on the Board of Directors for the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia for six years. It’s been said that “Laughter is the Best Medicine.” I don’t claim to have any scientific proof to back that up, but as an educator who works in a germ factory (ie. 4th and 5th grade teacher), I can honestly say that since I started subscribing to 1812 Productions about six years ago, I haven’t had to take a sick day. You do the math.

When a request came, I was more than happy to write this letter for 1812 to highlight the good work that they do. Their productions have introduced me to the talents of so many great local artists — Tony Braithwaite, Dave Jadico, Scott Greer, and, of course, the hostess with the mostess, Jen Childs. I love the repertory feel of the company that Ms. Childs has created and that we get to watch these amazing pros perform their chameleon skills from one play to the next. Like a cherished family treasure, the value of this troupe is incalculable.

More importantly, it has provided me with some wonderful nights at the theater. Their signature piece, This Is The Week That Is, is always a highlight, funny and relevant. It never ceases to amaze me how brave and tuned in they have to be to write and perform musical pieces that discuss something that happened just two days ago. I think I look forward to that production the most every single year. While I always expect a good time at 1812, some shows have gone beyond and provided wonderful surprises: Suburban Love Songs was flat-out one of the most enjoyable times that I have ever spent in a theater. Watching this merry band of actors do their best to become professional dancers was not only gut-wrenchingly funny but also so incredibly brave. The fact that they was no dialogue for them to rely on made their performances even more incredible. This year’s Dave & Aaron Go To Work was a masterful work of precision. Dave is an MVP. I’ve seen him is so many shows, and he never fails to entertain.

When I work with my students, I ask them to use a variety of words in their writing. As I read this letter, I notice that I am not following my own advice. I keep seeing words like funny, brave, and creative pop up time and time again. I apologize for my poor word-smithing, but 1812 is FUNNY, and sometimes it just needs to be said. I urge you to support the good work that they do by subscribing. Your funny bone will thank you later.
