HDTV

• A series of projects in ITEA / ITEA 2 (MAGELLAN, HD4U, HDTVNext) contribute to the development of key components for the HDTV chain. HDTV is now ready for deployment in many European countries over DTT, satellite, cable and IPTV links.

• EURO1080 Belgian satellite TV operator has chosen MPEG4-AVC for satellite transmission with four HDTV channels commercially launched using technology developed in HD4U.

• As another result, the French broadcaster TF1 in close collaboration with the HD-Forum has convinced the French audiovisual authority to adopt HDTV for DTT; three free-to-air HDTV channels on only one multiplex will be transmitted from mid 2008 and a fourth channel will probably be added once technology will allow transmission of more channels.

• Furthermore, IPTV operator Maxisat in Finland has also shown that 93% of its subscribers can receive HDTV at home using ADSL2 networks with new MPEG4-AVC technology based on HD4U.

• HD4U also provided industrial partners with the opportunity to develop prototypes for encoding, modulation, IP encapsulation, STBs and LCD screens and deploy commercial products a year after the end of the project. This includes a second-generation MPEG4-AVC encoder that targets a 50% gain in compression compared with MPEG2, making it possible to increase the number of channels transmitted over a DTT network from three to four.

• “EUREKA labelling made it possible to obtain funding to develop the necessary tools and products. Moreover it allowed us to work closely with complementary partners in the complete chain.”Patrick Schwartz, Thomson, France – Project leader HD4U.

Product line software engineering

Another key achievement within ITEA has been the invention of the product line engineering

methodology. Important projects for this achievement were Café, ESAPS & Families.

• The product line engineering approach is one of the best ways to exploit business opportunities in rapidly changing markets. It reduces development duplication at the expense of management of variability, which takes less effort. It leads to a substantial reduction in development costs, product lead times and maintenance.

• Project partners reported the following improvements to support the productivity and quality improvements:

• Product cost reductions of 60 to 70%;

• Improved productivity by a factor of two to six times higher output;

• Investment reduction by an average 50%, and up to 90%;

• Product lead-time reductions by an average 50%, and up to 95%;

• Maintenance cost reduction;

• Portfolio complexity reduction;

• Training time reduction;

• Better product planning and use of roadmaps;

• Product defect density 50% or less; and

• Reuse of test cases from 40 to 60%.

Automotive

• One of the first success stories of ITEA resulted out of the project EAST EEA. The ITEA Embedded Electronic Architecture paved the way to a standardized platform for automotive applications, the Automotive open Systems Architecture – AUTOSAR.

• Today, AUTOSAR is a worldwide industrial initiative that currently is bringing together more than 100 OEMs & suppliers of the global automotive industry - the initial ITEA partners being still the majority in the current core group.

• Thanks to the EAST-EEA approach, vehicle manufacturers will be able to use an integrated framework for software and communication interfaces, tool environments and rules. Suppliers will benefit from standard solutions and re-use will become possible. New vehicle models will be developed faster and product quality will be improved.

• Until today ITEA 2 is actively contributing to this key area. E.g. the ITEA 2 TIMMO project is contributing to real time performance modeling and verification. The project results will be integrated in AUTOSAR in a later phase. A recent project in ITEA 2 Call 2, MODELISAR addresses the integrated design, test and management of AUTOSAR architectural components.

Digital media

• Within the digital media domain ITEA / ITEA 2 are contributing to the trend of changing the media studio from a format/ hardware-centred approach toward a network/software-centred one based on IP technology.

• The use of IP technology in studios is something that helps to ‘get the job done simply and reliably’, but also makes the studio ready to move into a future where all contents will be digital and every possibility of digital processing is easily accessible in the studio.

• For example, based on the technologies developed in the PELOPS project, one of the partners developed a new product called ‘Networked Digital Studio’. The first pieces of equipment are already in place at some alpha and beta customer sites, showing that IT-based solutions are finding acceptance in the broadcast community and paving the way for a market with high potential.

• The successful co-operation in the PELOPS consortium is expected to carry on inside the TVProdNext project. TVProdNext addresses the field of content acquisition and processing for the benefit of content creators, e.g. by making it possible to enlarge the studio area by using an IP telecommunications network to connect distant cameras to the studio.

• The extension of the digital studio to the home has already been addressed in the project Passepartout. It coupled new developments in digital media to consumer electronics devices, HDTV, and a media orchestration platform based on blu-ray technology.

Web of Objects

• SIRENA successfully demonstrated that present-day technology does allow applying the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm in the device space. The project demonstrated a technological breakthrough that paves the way for novel architectures in many areas and for many purposes.

• The core of the SIRENA Framework is the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS), a device-oriented subset of the Web Services protocol suite. The generic toolkit delivered by the SIRENA project is the world’s first implementation of DPWS for embedded devices.

• The importance of this achievement comes from the fact that today’s Internet is connecting a billion of people but, in the near future, Internet technology will network-connect hundreds of billions of devices.

• The SIRENA project, led by Schneider Electric, anticipated this evolution and has demonstrated the feasibility of implementing SOA using Web Services in simple devices with applications in industrial automation, home, automotive and telecommunications sectors. It implements all the DPWS protocols except WS-Security. The first implementation of DPWS was a proof-of-concept, built by a proprietary DPWS Toolkit of Schneider Electric.

• Meanwhile, through the successor project SODA, the implementation of the DPWS stack has been made available in Open Source (http://www.soda-itea.org) and more than 100 downloads have been made. Moreover, more than 50 companies have been trained to its use, and are now developing applications in collaboration. The SODA project focuses on building a complete service-oriented ecosystem based on the SIRENA results.

• An important step to becoming an industry standard is the fact that Microsoft natively incorporated DPWS in VISTA, which provides a very interesting Plug and Play solution: just by connecting any DPWS device to a Vista PC, it is automatically discovered, identified, and a first level of monitoring and diagnostic is provided, without any tool or software installation.

• Through this connection of devices we establish a new kind of a ‘Web of Objects’ (controlled by these connected devices).

Web of ObjectsApplication in the Home domain

• Whereas SIRENA gave a proof of concept through a proprietary implementation of the DPWS stack, the SODA project provided an Open Source implementation of the DPWS stack. Now ANSO extended these results by including security and reliable messaging, which resulted in a DPWS base driver.

• The ANSO result – the infrastructure surrounding the base driver – hides the complexity involved in the distribution and heterogeneity from the developers and provides integration into the OSGi context and ADM solution. This part has been contributed to and accepted by the OSGi standardisation body as a part of the OSGi plug-n-play technologies.

• These results were first applied in the Home domain, for example in controlling connected devices in the home by using a DVB-MHP enabled set-top box or TV.

Service creation and management

• Service innovation is a key area for European economy. ITEA has addressed this area for a long time in a series of projects, for example SUMO, OSIRIS, S4ALL, LOMS, while addressing applications in, for example ANSO and NUADU.

• The SUMO project addressed continuous mobile access to services. The major result has been automation of access, inter-technologu roaming with real-time service continuity (WiMax, 2.5 G, WLAN, DVB). Two main types of services have been focussed on: rich media streaming and transparent access to corporate applications.

• The OSIRIS project has created an Open Source infrastructure for run-time integration of services, and the The S4ALL project simplified service creation and sharing by using simple graphical tools and natural language processing.

• In the LOMS project, the ‘long tail’of services has been addressed: the business landscape is defined in terms of roles (platform operator, service operator, service provider) and a set of tools, templates and guidelines, together with a comprehensive run-time system for easy creation of services for various small target groups. The total platform (excl. a propritary billing system) has been published in Open Source. The results have been piloted by regional publishers in Limburg (B) and Karlsruhe.

Mobile NFC services

• The SmartTouch project is the largest effort on piloting Near Field Communication technology in the European Union. SmartTouch communication is based on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and the NFC short range wireless connectivity interface and protocol.

• The project is examining the role of Near Field Communication Technology (NFC) and RFID in City Life, Home, Wellness and Health.

• After several field tests in European cities such as Oulu and Strassbourg, and the standardisation in ETSI, this technology is now ready for country-wide roll-outs. This is demonstrated by the following quote of Gemalto on a project in Taiwan:

• “After multiple mobile contactless trials in Asia and in the rest of the world and through its experience in the telecommunications, transport and financial sectors, and based on co-operative R&D developments made in the scope of the ITEA Sm@rtTouch project, Gemalto successfully developed a secure solution fulfilling the specific needs of its partners and end-users. It will allow Taiwan Mobile to register, issue, manage and terminate mobile NFC services over-the-air (OTA). Taiwan Mobile’s subscribers will be free to securely purchase goods, top-up their transport pass and proceed to coupons management just by using their mobile phone in a contactless mode. As most people always keep this personal device with them, the mobile

contactless technology clearly brings them more freedom and convenience. This comprehensive solution will be commercially rolled out nation-wide by the end of 2008.”
