A GREAT GROUP
Diemme FiltrationA Success born in 1923
Diemme’s story started in 1923, when the founder, Mr. Alfredo Melandri, planned and realised the fi rst machines for mechanically pressing grapes. During the fi rst decades of the last century, the main market of the company was the oenological industry and we developed innovative technologies for our wine-making customers. The success of our machinery spread worldwide, due to its innovative and durable design.During the 60s, thanks to the intuition of Mr. Primo Melandri, Alfredo’s son, the fi ltration technologies that had been applied exclusively to the oenological sector up until then, were expanded to other industrial processes.Europe was facing a period of remarkable economical growth and the growing demand for fi lters within the industrial sector could only be satisfi ed with the establishment of a new division within the company; this section, was specialized in solid-liquid separation technology and was equipped with its own technical, commercial and production structures. In the early 1970s, Diemme was therefore reorganized and restructured in order to become a true multi-business company. Two divisions in the company were set up: the Filter Division and the Oenology Division; each quickly achieved industry leadership in their respective sectors, both nationally and internationally. The Filter Division; today known as Diemme Filtration, is an independent business unit, able to realise complete plant engineering and custom-made solutions, in order to satisfy the most exacting customer requirements.

RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND SOLUTIONS
1 RD - Research and Development
2 PE - Preliminary Engineering and data processing
3 PR - Design and Execution
The heart of DIEMME Filtration is represented by the research centre. High pressure solid/liquid separation is a complicated physical phenomenon that is extremely diffi cult to replicate with theoretical models. It is therefore essential to measure the process parameters for each application and follow some empirical rules gained through our decades of experience. A qualifi ed department of chemists and engineers, based in the laboratory at our headquarters in Lugo, test product samples coming from all over the world each day. These fi ltration tests determine the chemical-physical characteristics of the product and the fi ltration parameters that must be understood before our specialist sales technicians size the machines on an individual project basis. Every analysis is brought together in a company database, containing the thousands of process data-sheets drawn up since 1971. After testing, the analyst issues a detailed report on the tests result to be sent to the customer, together with samples of the tested product. Further to the laboratory tests, we may carry out fi ltration tests at the customer’s plant for further investigation. These pilot plants; small industrial fi lter presses, are usually installed on containers and are equipped with the necessary ancillary equipment including a mobile laboratory unit.
The fi ltration test results and the data collected by sales managers during their inspections are examined by the estimate and elaboration department, which then studies the project requirements and works out a technical proposal to offer the recommended solution. Finally, the commercial department issues a detailed offer to each customer based on the correct technical solutions, including a lay-out drawing of the plant, a P&ID, fl owcharts, functional descriptions, data-sheets, stoicheiometrical and mass balances and any additional technical details that may be necessary.
The customer’s P.O. represents the beginning of the executive design sequence, during which a team of designers made up of engineers, software programmers and draughtsmen develop the job. The design is entirely realised through 3D Computer Aided Design technologies alongside structural analysis software to check fi nished components. The personalisation of each machine is considerable. Not only the machine size, but the construction materials, coatings and painting cycles, are all chosen according to the specifi c application. The ancillary equipment and the mechanical, electrical and electronic components will also vary according to the customer’s individual requirements. The typical documentation that is submitted to the customer in this phase is made up of:
• Production, supply, and design schedules • Loading and anchorage diagrams • Data sheets of the complete equipment • Lay outs of the electric control panel and wiring diagrams • Functional descriptions of process controls • Flowcharts, equipment and process diagrams and P&ID • Test and inspection schedules, test certifi cates of the materials used
DIEMME Filtration supplies not just the ‘heart’ of the plant, the DIEMME fi lter press, but also offers a complete turnkey solution, and can provide you with all the ancillary equipment required for the whole process: pumps, air compressors, chemical reactors, tanks, clarifi ers, turbo-mixers, additives make-up and dosing systems, belt conveyors, etc…

FILTER PLATES
One solution for every fi ltration exigency
The DIEMME Filtration fi lter presses can include plates of different sizes, materials and design, according to the product to be treated and the operating conditions.
Recessed plates: Recessed Plates are fi ltering elements with fi xed volume, suitable for most of the standard applications.
Membrane plates:Membrane Plates are fi ltering elements with a variable volume, so they can be easily adapted to special applications, for example if the use of solvents is necessary in the washing phases or if drying with compressed air is required.
A complete range of sizes and technologies
MACHINES
DIEMME Filtration has the widest fi lter press range currently available in the world market.
Further to the structural design, which can be either overhead beam or side beam, DIEMME Filtration’s range of fi lter presses can vary in both size and automation level.
The fi lter press size depends on the width and on the number of plates installed. The GHT 4x4 fi lter presses can weigh up to 75 tons and overall length is, on average, about 18 m. There is no doubt; they are currently the biggest fi lter presses of this category in the world.
The automation level can also be adapted to meet your requirements: Semi-Automatic presses need operator intervention during some cycle phases; Automatic presses require only operation supervision; or for your ultimate convenience, fully automatic presses can work continuously without any operator intervention.
The diagram shows the extension of the DIEMME Filtration machines range, in the form of matrix. The abscissa shows the plate size, while the ordinate shows the automation level.
