ATTENTION: Information Regarding Elementary Music Programs The last few years we have had an awesome turnout at the Eddyville Elementary Winter Concert. Because of the great attendance and increased enrollment at the Eddyville Elementary, we are anticipating that we will not have the space in the gym or the parking lot to ac-commodate everyone; to make sure the entire community can enjoy the concert, we have made some changes. At Eddyville Elemen-tary, PS-2nd grade will perform at our winter concert, and 3rd-6th grade will perform at a spring concert. Next year, we will have 3rd-6th perform at our winter concert and PS-2nd perform at a spring concert. In addition, we will add the 5th and 6th grade band to the winter concert. The high school gym will still be the location of the Eddyville Elementary concerts.

When to Keep a Sick Child Home: Reference Guide for Parents

Deciding when a child is too sick to go to school can be difficult. Please use the following guidelines to help you in your decision.

Be sure to call your child’s school to let them know why your child is absent, and then send the appropriate note when your child returns to school.

1. Fever: student must be fever-free (<100.4 Fahrenheit) for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin). 2. Vomiting or diarrhea, especially if the child acts or looks ill. Student must be symp-tom-free for 24 hours before returning. 3. Persistent nasal congestion, reddened eyes, sore throat, cough, or headaches that dis-rupt the student’s learning or pose a risk of disease transmission to others. 4. Unexplained skin eruptions or rashes. When in doubt, consult your child’s doctor be-fore sending your child to school. 5. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) appearing as redness of the conjunctiva (lining of eye/ eye-lid) with or without pus drainage from eye and/ or swelling. Student should not return to school until they have been examined and treated. 6. Any other communicable illnesses in which you have been advised to remain out of school until cleared to return by the county health department or your child’s doctor (i.e. chicken pox, scabies, influenza, whooping cough, tuberculosis, measles, impetigo, etc.) 7. Any other health condition that in the school nurses judgment is of concern for the others health and well-being and that of the child.

District Soil Judging By AgriPower FFA Chapter Reporters

On Tuesday, September 27, a team of soil judgers went to Muscat-ine, Iowa to compete in the district competition. This team consisted of DJ Stout, Gabe Larkin, Austin Stewart, and Tyler Landgrebe. Out of this team, DJ Stout was the high scoring individual - with a grand score of 134. Overall the boys placed 15 out of 28 teams, with a score of 392.

To prepare for this competition, they practiced judging pits at Indian Hills and attend-ed the sub-districts competition. In the classroom, they studied to learn more about the soil and knowledge of the pits. They also were able to do ribbon testing and learn about the parent material of the soil. Austin Stewart says “It was fun and interesting to know what things in the soil contrib-uted to farming, and how the crops grow.”

FarmHER Conference By Chapter Reporters Randie Richmond, Adlynn Eveland, & Morgan Wells

In late September, seven girls from the Agri-Power FFA Chapter went to the FFA Enrichment center to learn how to be a better woman in agriculture. The con-ference included delicious food, a career fair, and individual classes. Claire Jager, Adlynn Eveland, Addison McCrea, Hannah Koellner, Briana Ver Steegh, and Mrs. Spring attended the conference. They were first spoken to by a woman named Laura, who showed them steps to becoming a more confi-dent, hard working woman. Everyone then split off into sepa-rate sessions of their choosing. One class was entitled "Leaving a Legacy". In this session, inheriting the family farm and ways to deal with it was discussed. "I really enjoyed this session, because it helped show me that even though my future path may not be farming, I can still find multiple ways to get involved in agriculture," said Adlynn Eveland. While at the conference, the girls got to meet other wom-en who have made a successful impact in the agricultural world through business. Each member that attended the con-ference was also offered a free head shot; this will be helpful when sending in resumes for jobs and colleges when one is needed. The group really enjoyed the trip and hope to at-tend next year.

Farm Safety Day Written By: Randie Richmond, Morgan Wells, and Adlynn Eveland

Another year of teaching the kids about Farm Safety is in the books. Many members of the Agri-Power FFA go down to the Eddyville Elementary every year to teach the young kids about the safe-ties when they are on the farm. During the day, the kids rotate around the different stations to learn. In the first station, Adlynn Eveland and Claire Jager taught the kids that there is more to FFA than just living on a farm. The also told them about all the fun and exciting things FFA does, like going to National Convention.

The second station was Morgan Wells and Jessie Fisher, where they were teaching kids how to safely ride on an ATV. Lessons such as riding with a helmet, riding in jeans, and always riding with a parent were taught. Brayden Black brought his calf to teach about beef. There the kids were taught about the calf, and also how they should be when they are around cows. For the fourth station, TJ Sinnif and Austin Angle brought a horse. They taught the kids the im-portance of being alert and careful when around a large animal. The Eddyville Firefighters brought down a truck and new safety equipment of the fire department. Metal platforms were on display that will help save farmers who have fallen into a grain silo and are stuck. Our own principal, Mr. Noble, was able to teach the kids about gun safety and the proper uses of guns. Mr. Noble mentioned “I really liked getting to teach the gun safety. It is nice as the new principal to be involved in school events”. The last station was the Chariton Valley CO-OP. They shared with the kids the dangers that power-lines threaten and what to do if you ever come across a fallen powerline. TJ Sinnif stated “Teaching the kids about how to be safe around horses makes me feel better, be-cause I know that the kids will be knowledgeable about them. I also am glad to see the interest kids have in horses and the opportunities they could have with it in FFA”. Overall the day was a major success and very informational for the younger generation. Pictured, above left, Claire Jager and Adlynn Eveland teaching about FFA. Pictured, at left, CD Brinegar teaching about PTO Safety. Above right, TJ Sinnif and Austin Angle teaching horse safety.

High School Football Report

On Sept. 16th, the Rockets played the Davis County Mustangs and won 32-29. This was the second victory for the Rocket football team. Trey Moore rushed for 224 yards on 24 attempts. Gaige Berryman rushed for 49 yards and Dillon Howard rushed for 72 yards. Gaige Berryman had 10 tackles and Trey Moore had a one pick for an 80 yard touchdown. I am really proud of the boys and the way they played tonight. We came out and played a great game. On Sept. 23rd, the Rockets traveled to Albia and lost 32-6. We didn't come out and execute the game plan and just got out-played by the Blue Demons. Trey Moore led all running backs with 125 yards on 23 attempts with the only score. Wyatt Klyn had two catches for 32 yards. On Sept. 30th, the Rockets hosted Central Lee and lost 31-6. We had some critical mistakes that cost us the game, but the boys did play hard and never gave up. Ryan Adams led the rushing attack with 49 yards on 8 attempts. Trey Moore threw the ball for 82 yards with Wyatt Klyn catching two for 29 yards. On Defense, Gaige Berryman led the way with 8 tackles. Again the boys played well but, mistakes hurt the team in the end. On Oct. 7th, the Rockets hosted the PCM Mustangs for homecoming and lost 49-0. PCM is a really good ball

club and some really good play makers on their side of the ball. Trey Moore led the way on the rushing attack

with 49 yards on 9 attempts. Gabe Larkin caught two passes for 31 yards. We could never get going on the

offensive side of the ball. Again PCM is a really good team and will probably go deep in the playoffs.

BLAKESBURG – The Blakesburg Public Library will host the 3rd An-nual Crock-Pot Cook-Off from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Elementary School Cafeteria in Blakesburg. Executive Chef Gordon Rader, program coordinator for the Culinary Arts Program at Indian Hills Community College, will bring a group of students to help judge the recipes and declare winners in three catego-ries – Soups and Stews, Entrees, and Breads/Desserts/Appetizers. A

People’s Choice Award will also be presented. This is the third year that Chef Rader has volun-teered to judge the competition, which is open to all ages and abilities of cooks or amateur chefs. Rader’s IHCC program was recently rated as one of the Top 50 Schools in the nation by Best Choice Schools for 2016, and was named a top 20 program by FSR Magazine in 2014. Participants in this year’s cook-off should submit their recipe to Library Director Cheryl Tal-bert by Saturday, October 29, 2016 in order for their recipe to be included in the Annual Crock-Pot Cook-Off Cookbook. Participants who miss that deadline may still bring their dish to the competition, but may choose to provide copies of their recipes to the tasters. Recipes may be submitted by email at [email protected], by phone at 641.777.0048, or my mail at Blakesburg Public Library, P.O. Box 87, Blakesburg, IA 52536. Persons not entering the competition are invited to join the fun by tasting the culinary concoc-tions and voting for their favorite from 4 to 6 p.m. For a $7 admission fee, these participants will receive a beverage, a copy of the cookbook with all of the competition recipes, enjoy some won-derful food, and select the people’s choice award winner. Past competitions have featured around 20 cooks, some with multiple recipes. This has been a great community social event as well as a chance for people to get some new recipes for the coming winter months. Prizes will be awarded to all category winners, which will be announced between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. All proceeds from this event will support the library’s collections and programs for the com-munity. For more information, please contact Talbert at 641.777.0048, or by email at [email protected].

Crazy 8s Math Club at Blakesburg Public Library BLAKESBURG – Bedtime Math’s Crazy 8s Math Club is coming to the Blakesburg Public Li-brary. The Crazy 8s Math Club features fun activities such as building glow in the dark structures, Bouncy Dice Explosion and Toilet Paper Olympics.

The Crazy 8s Math Club is for students in Grades 3 through 5, and is limited to 16 students. A wait list will be created in case of overflow.

The fun activities planned for the program will promote math skills and are geared toward all abilities. The program is funded by Bedtime Math Foundation, and there is no fee to participate. Children will be able to bring home some cool math toys or tools each week. If the program is successful, the library will schedule additional 8-week sessions throughout the year. Pay It Forward Tuesday at Fremont Elementary

In 5th and 6th grade library, we are reading the book “Pay It Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde. This book is based on a true story. The Pay It For-ward movement started out as an extra credit assignment for a middle school social studies class. The assignment was for them to think of a way to make the world a better place to live. With that assignment, one student came up with the Pay It Forward movement that has gone around the world. We would like to start our own Pay It Forward movement here at the Fremont Elementary School. We are calling it Pay It Forward Tuesdays. For the months of October through February, we are asking students to bring any spare change that they might have to school EVERY Tuesday. With this money, we will buy books at the Book Fair. Half of the books will be for our stu-dents at Fremont, and the other half of the books will be given to other chil-dren in the area.
