VISION: A Dynamic Institution That Adds Value To All I MOTTO: Care & Share.Achieve and Excel

09 At the outset, we had our annual Speech and Prize Giving Day celebration in April. This was to honour the successes of Bukit Vie-wans – students, staff and partners alike. For our Performing Arts groups, this was also a challenging period as they stepped up train-ing and rehearsals to prepare themselves for the Singapore Youth Festival competitions. Their hardwork did pay off!

In June, the H1N1 flu pandemic, shook Singa-pore and tested our unity, strength and ca-pabilities as a nation. Daily routines that we took for granted came to a standstill. Bukit View rose to the occasion to ensure proce-dures were in place. Temperature checks in school became the order of the day. Students who had to stay away from school because of illness, did not lose out – they could go online to complete assignments ‘posted’ on the school’s website by their teachers.

Despite the H1N1 pandemic, the school car-ried on the Youth Day celebration in July and the National Day celebration in August. Since mass gatherings were not encouraged, both celebrations took place mainly in class – but the jubilant mood was never dampened. This was followed by the celebration of Teachers’ Day in September, and by this time, everyone was gathered in the hall. What a finale for the end of Term 3!

Thus, in this first of two issues of our 2009 newsletter, we take stock of the past nine months. We will take you through the high-lights of the various events – events that have empowered and nurtured us to be what we are today.

Sadly, we also bid farewell to our Vice-Princi-pal, Mr Loh Chu Yin, who has finally retired from the service. We will surely miss that stern, yet fatherly figure vigilantly watching over us along the corridor. Our best wishes to Mr Loh!

Nevertheless, look out for our online news-letter, which promises a more interactive platform for all of us to contribute a piece of our minds – about our school, our diverse cultures, our environment and many more!

was the most important event of the school - a day to celebrate the successes and achievements of Bukit View as an institution of learning.

The school began preparations for this day as early as Janu-ary. Both the uniformed groups and the Performing Arts groups were mobilized to put up a parade and a concert respectively. It was an honour for these students to be part of such a grand and meaningful event.

Our distinguished guests included School Advisory Com-mittee members, our partners from various organisations and parents.

The Guest-of-Honour was Mr. Tan Wee Hock, the Divi-sional Director of National Environment Agency - one of our school’s active partners. He inspected the uniformed groups and officially opened our Students’ Gallery before proceeding to the hall for the Prize Presentation ceremony and a concert.

months from January to March saw our Performing Arts groups in full swing, as they rehearsed for the Singapore Youth Festival competitions. Their hard work paid off as can be seen from their awards of BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD!

More importantly, it was the journey of self-discovery, perseverance, team-work and friendship that matters most than any awards received.

so the saying goes. It is through various pro-grammes and events that many students ‘discov-er’ themselves – that they can lead and make de-cisions on their own. Empowerment is not just a word in Bukit View, it is a reality, and more so for our Student Leaders and Councillors as well as the student facilitators of various programmes.

Unlike many adventure campsites, the Dairy Farm Adventure Centre, which is located beside the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, gave us the chance to personally trek through the forest and enjoy the wonders of nature. And yes, we did not just learn about teamwork or perseverance. We learnt about the different kinds of plants and their functions, the water transport system and certain skills that just cannot be learnt from a whiteboard.
