The 2015 Isle of Wight Challenge is now just 4 weeks away, and whether you are planning to Walk it, Jog it or Run it we

hope that you are well under way with your training, fundraising and general preparation. To help you make those final

plans and to get a better idea of what to expect on the Challenge itself, we have put together this ‘Final Event

Information’ guide. Please read it carefully and make a note of the key dates, timings, and any action that is required

from you.

Key pre event information....

Start times You should have received your allocated start time for the Challenge via EMAIL, and it will only be changed because of

mitigating circumstances. If you are in a ‘Team’ – all members should have the same start time. If you have NOT

received your start time email by Tuesday 8 April 2015 (do check your ‘junk’ inbox) OR you would like to change it to an

alternative time, OR there seems to be a problem with some of your Team’s start times - then please complete the

ONLINE FORM below. Note - all start times are between 7:30 – 10:10 am; we cannot provide you with a slot outside of

this window.

CLICK HERE for online start time amendment / re-send form >>

E-Tickets & Bib Number Your confirmed start time & bib number will be EMAILED to you as your E-Ticket by Friday 24 April 2015. For

Registration on to the Challenge you MUST bring your E-Ticket with you - so print it off, or store it on a mobile device.

If you have NOT received this E-Ticket by close of play on Friday 24 April please check your junk mail, and if you still

don’t find it please email us on [email protected] and we will re-send it on Monday 27 April.

Route Info & Maps On the 9 April 2015 the route info will be posted into the Participant Area of the website, in our ‘Maps, Apps &

Tracking’ document, this includes:

GPX files of the route, so you can load them into Garmin type devices

Details of mapping ‘Apps’ so you can download the route on to your phone

Route on Google & other mapping systems

Details of how family / friends can monitor your progress via the Challenge website

At Registration you will be given your own hard copy of the Isle of Wight route card

Please note – The route is subject to change, and in case the weather is bad we have an alternative route that avoids

the most exposed sections on the southern side of the Island – details of which will also be provided.

Campsite, early registration, & optional Friday evening dinner….

Camping For those of you who have booked a pitch at our campsite – you can join us on the Friday afternoon 1

st May from 4.00

pm onwards. The campsite is located at Northwood House – adjacent to the start area for the Challenge. There are

shower facilities a 15-minute walk away, and shops close by also. The campsite is now fully booked (but anyone can

join us for the optional dinner & briefing – see below).

Those camping on the Friday night only (ie not Saturday) MUST dismantle their tents on Saturday morning before the

Challenge, and there will be a FREE baggage drop for your tent & 1 bag whilst you are out on the Challenge. If you have

booked camping for Saturday night only you will also get this free baggage drop facility – and tents should be erected

after your Challenge, as we can’t guarantee there will be space prior to that.

Early Registration on Friday On Friday 1 May from 4.00 pm until 7.30 pm we will also open ‘Early Registration’ at the start location (Northwood

House) - where you can collect your Event Pack (you will need your E-Ticket). This is not essential as the main

Registration period is Saturday morning, but may suit if you are in the area or are planning to join us for the optional

dinner on Friday evening.

Optional Dinner + Briefing on Friday & other Optional Meals At 7.30 pm on Friday our Team will do a Challenge briefing – which is not essential - but will give you the chance to

learn more about the route, Rest Stops, and to ask any burning questions you might have. The Optional Dinner will

then be served from 8.00 pm – and tickets for this MUST be purchased in advance (see below).

There is also the OPTION to purchase meal tickets for breakfast on Saturday morning, and for lunch on Saturday at the

33km Rest Stop for Full & Half Island Challengers who might prefer this to their own packed lunch (Quarter Island

Challengers get their ‘Finishers Meal’ included at this point). You can still book these optional meals using the link

below - and tickets for these bookings will be in your Event Pack, collected at registration. Note - you can book any of

these meals for non-participating friends / family who may be supporting you.

Dinner Friday evening (8.00 pm to 9.30 pm) - £10. Menu includes - ‘Jack Daniels’ belly pork, Cumberland sausage

& black pudding, Mediterranean Wellington + side salads / new potatoes + desert selection + coffee.

Breakfast Saturday morning (6.00 am to 9.30 am) - £7.50. Menu includes - full English buffet & vegetarian options

the Challenge! Menu includes – BBQ meal of pork and chorizo sausages, rosemary and garlic chicken, couscous,

Mediterranean rice and other sides.

CLICK HERE to book any of the above optional meals if you have not already done it >>

Travelling to the Isle of Wight....

The start of the Challenge (& finish of the full 106km event) is at - Northwood House & Park, Ward Avenue, West

Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO31 8AZ.

Travelling by ferry (and car/train) Northwood House is within walking distance of the ferry terminals in Cowes, which are served from Southampton. A

train to Southampton, or a drive and parking your car there, and then travelling on foot as a passenger on the ferry is a

good and flexible option. Parking on The Isle of Wight (in Cowes) is often difficult for extended periods, and parking at

the start location will be limited.

Note – we will release further information relating to parking at Northwood House, as to an extent, it depends on

levels of rain over the next few weeks and the state of the grass at this private venue.

There are good train connections to Southampton Central, with frequent trains from London Waterloo, Bournemouth

& Portsmouth. You can then get either the Red Funnel Ferry or the Red Jet High Speed service.

Ferries from Southampton

The Red Jet High Speed Ferry (foot

passengers) is the quickest (23 – 25

mins) and the most direct, arriving in

West Cowes and is close to the start

location (5 mins walk to start)

CLICK HERE for available Red Jet

Ferry times to Cowes >>

The Red Funnel Ferry (vehicles & foot

passengers) is slower (55 – 60 mins)

& arrives in East Cowes – about 15

mins to our start line on foot & you

need to get the short chain link ferry

to West Cowes which is free for foot

passengers.

CLICK HERE for available Red Funnel

Ferry times to Cowes >>

Alternative ferry services There are also services from Wight Link Ferry, which leaves from Portsmouth & Lymington and offers 3 routes.

Portsmouth to Fishbourne - car & foot passenger ferry (takes approximately 45mins)

Portsmouth to Ryde - foot passenger catamaran (takes approximately 22mins)

Lymington to Yarmouth - car & foot passenger ferry (takes approximately 40mins)

Note: Ryde, Yarmouth, and Fishbourne ferry terminals are 30 - 45 minutes by car to Northwood House. All our shuttle

services provided from the FINISH locations on the Challenge will stop at Northwood House only, so you may find it

difficult to get back to these ferry ports unless you are intending to bring a car or organise a taxi.

For more info on the ferries - visit the ‘GETTING THERE AND AWAY’ section of the Participant’s Area of the website.

On the day….

Note – you can register early on Friday 1 May 2015 between 4.00 – 7.30 pm if it’s convenient. If you register on Friday

please still arrive 30 mins before your start time on Saturday morning.

The start The start venue will be open from 6.00 am on Saturday – where you will find a large registration tent, tea & coffee,

biscuits, water/energy drink refill, medics, toilets, a warm up area, and of course – the start line! Please try and arrive 1

hour prior to your start time, as registration can be busy. We recommend a good breakfast before you arrive and bring

2 litres of water/drinks with you. Remember you can pre-purchase your breakfast to have in the marquee using our

online form (you will not be able to get breakfast at the start unless purchased in advance).

You will be called to the Start Pen 15 minutes prior to your start time and there will be a short warm up followed by

final safety and route briefing. After a big countdown, you will be sent on your way in groups of about 100.

Optional baggage service This is available if you want to leave a bag in our store at Northwood House (duffel bags/backpacks/suitcase) OR to

have it transported from the start to the finish line for Half/Quarter Island Challengers.

Full Island / Anyone – optional baggage drop to store bags at Northwood House / start venue

Half Island – optional baggage transfer to your finish line at Chale (54 km)

Quarter Island – optional baggage transfer to your finish line at Nodewell Farm (33 km)

This optional service can be booked and paid in CASH on the morning of the challenge at the start and will cost £5.00

Runner’s baggage service

As runners may not want to wear a daypack (all walkers/casual joggers should have one) a FREE service is available to

transport a SINGLE SMALL rucksack (MAX SIZE - 35 litres / 10 kg):

Full Island Runners – transport a single small rucksack to the halfway stop (Chale) and on back to the finish

Half Island Runners – transport a single small rucksack to your finish line at Chale (54 km)

Quarter Island Runners – transport a single small rucksack to your finish line at Nodewell Farm (33 km)

Note: Should you have a larger bag that you wish to store with us, that won’t be transported, and as per above, this will

require a £5.00 storage fee.

Timing & tracking system You MUST wear your EVENT PASS, which has your bib number on it, and gives you access to REST STOP facilities & the

food/drink. It also acts as a TIMING CHIP, which needs to be scanned or read automatically at each major Rest Stop &

your finish line. This will give you your overall challenge time and enable us to know where you are. It is your

responsibility to walk/run through (or over) any timing mats as directed, or to ensure a staff member ‘scans’ you.

Failure to do so will mean it’s difficult to produce an overall time and time splits for you.

Event phone numbers

Please save the numbers below into your mobile phone to ensure you have them to hand. They will also be on your

Event Pass and Route Card, which you will be given at Registration.

EMERGENCY NUMBER (if you are injured in a non-life threatening capacity): 07425 623707

CONTROL ROOM NUMBER (for non emergencies – eg if you are lost): WILL BE ON ROUTE CARD

Friends, family & supporters....

Anyone wishing to support you during the challenge can do so – we recommend that your supporters come well

equipped with their own food, drinks and supplies and during busy times we might ask for space to be made in the

marquee areas for our Challengers - who may well be need of a seat!

Due to the size and accessibility of some of our Rest Stops on the Challenge – only the ones detailed below are open for

supporters. The smaller rest stops have limited access and parking and in some cases we want to keep the disruption

for local residents to an absolute minimum.

Rest Stops that are open for supporters

o Parking: Will be available (full details to be released prior to the event)

note there will not be food available to purchase on the day. Coffee & tea is available at all times.

54 km – Chale Recreation Ground, Military Road, Chale, PO38 2JF

o Parking: Parking at this site is free and plentiful.

o Facilities: Toilets, and under cover rest areas. During busy times we will ask that space is made for

participants in the main undercover food marquee.

o Catering: We recommend supporters bring your own food & supplies, as there will be NO options to

purchase meals at this rest stop. Hot drinks will be available.

77 km – Culver Down Road, Bembridge, Sandown, Isle of Wight, P036 8QT

o Parking: Parking at this site is free and plentiful.

o Facilities: Toilets, and under cover rest areas. During busy times we will ask that space is made for

participants in the main undercover food marquee.

Rest Stops unable to cater for supporters Please ensure your supporters refrain from visiting the other Rest Stops unless you are EXITING from the event and/or

need assistance and it is an absolute necessity. These other Rest Stops are small or in residential neighbourhoods with

little to no parking and we don’t want to upset the local communities by creating noise or disruption. If a supporter has

to visit you for a good reason – they will have to park some distance away and walk to the Rest Stop.

Your safety, event rules, and retiring from the Challenge....

The control room The Control Room is your contact point should you need help whilst on the Challenge. It will be manned with our

Management Team and St John’s Ambulance, and will handle all emergency and non-emergency calls.

The course There will be over 800 Challengers taking on the 2015 Isle of Wight Challenge. On a course of 106 km this means it may

feel quite lonely at times, unless you are taking part as a Team. We recommend always walking in groups where

possible, and for individuals this may mean making some new friends - and we will do our best to ensure that happens.

From the 33 km Rest Stop onwards we advise all individual walking participants (and small Teams if they wish) to try

and join in with one of our TREK MASTERS where possible (see details later on) and if not, then create a team of your

own.

Please bear in mind the route follows the coastal path where possible. This will mean at times you are close to cliff

edges - particularly along the Southern section of the Island. There can also be high winds, so please make sure you stay

on the path at all times, join up with others, stay alert, and then you should be perfectly safe. Please also wear a hi-viz

item - and Full Island & Half Island Challengers MUST have a head torch with them. We will also give you glow sticks to

attach to your daypacks during night-time.

Route signage The route will be clearly signed with PINK ARROWS (which are directional) and occasionally PINK RIBBONS (non

directional - that mean you are on the correct route), with GREEN GLOW STICKS also during the night, and in some

places flashing green LED lights (at night). In the outskirts of villages/towns this signage may become harder to spot, so

please familiarise yourselves with the route before the Challenge, and have the Route Map with you and track your

progress on it so you are aware of your assumed location. It is your responsibility not to get lost and having access to a

Google type map is also recommended. The route will be marked with Kilometre Markers (1km to 106 km) – so as you

track around, try and remember which one you past last - in case you need to describe your position to the Control

Room.

HAZARDS on the route will be indicated by a PINK SQUARE with a BLACK CIRCLE inside; at night we will also use

flashing orange LED lights in some places to attract your attention. Take special care when you see these, and be very

aware of your surroundings, and use the Route Map to anticipate hazards along the course (especially since signage is

harder to spot at night!

Event rules There aren’t too many rules – but the ones we have are important to keep you safe. Please make sure you familiarise

yourself with all the rules prior to the Challenge, and detailed below are the important ones:

Your event ‘Bib’ and Event Pass must be worn at all times - and you must have a route map with you.

Participants must ensure they are adequately hydrated, fed and rested before commencing any stage of the

Event and report any concerns to an Event Medic or Event Staff. If, in the opinion of an Event Medic, a

participant is considered unfit to complete the next stage, or further stages, that participant will be excluded

as necessary.

All ‘Full Island’ and ‘Half Island Challengers’ must carry a head torch and wear it during the hours of darkness.

You will NOT be allowed to leave Rest Stops and participate without wearing a head torch.

Participants must carry a mobile phone with them.

The Event Organiser reserves the right to operate a 34 hour ‘cut off time’ for all Participants attempting to

complete the Event – with other Rest Stops closing times in accordance with this time frame.

No individual will be allowed to leave a rest stop alone during the hours of darkness – you must walk with a

TREK MASTER guided group or be part of an official Team or have formed a ‘group’ en route.

Please click here to view all the Event Rules >>

Exiting / retiring from the challenge If you need to exit/drop out of the challenge, please inform Event Staff either in person or by Text SMS to the number

provided on the Route Card. The ideal place to retire is at any Rest Stop / Mid Point Stop – so unless it is an absolute

emergency please do your best to carry on to one of these stops.

There will be shuttle buses picking up those who have retired from the event from the 33 km rest stop onwards, to take

you back to Northwood House (West Cowes) and the Chain Link Ferry (during hours of service), however these buses

will be doing round trips of the Island and may involve a wait of up to 60 minutes during busy times.

If dropping out at a rest stop Go to the ‘Information Point’ and hand in your Event Pass. They will provide details of shuttle services back to the start

or other ways to exit the site. The shuttle service is only available from the 33 km point onwards. Before that point,

retirees will need to make their own travel arrangements, unless in an emergency when we will have vehicles and

medics available.

If exiting the event on the course Text (SMS) the ‘Drop Out’ phone number with - your NAME, BIB NUMBER, APPROXIMATE KM and TIME - with the

words ‘DROPPING OUT’. Please include details for Team Mates exiting the event if applicable.

Cut off times The Event will have cut off departure times from each Rest Stop/Mid-Points based on the 34 hour upper end time (106

km), 16 hrs for the 54 km and 9 hours for the 33 km. If anyone fails to meet these cut off times, the Organiser, reserves

the right to withdraw participants from the Event. We will, however, do everything we can to ensure that participants,

who want to continue, can continue to do so as we are fully aware of what ‘finishing’ means to many.

Joining up with a Trek Master From the 33 km Rest Stop onwards there will be TREK MASTERS setting off at staggered times throughout the evening

on Saturday and through to the early hours on Sunday morning. Our TREK MASTERS are there to lead controlled groups

out on the course and are a perfect solution for Individuals, to have the chance to walk in a group during the night

stages.

Planned departures lead by our TREK MASTERS will set out every 30 - 45 minutes where possible.

When the TREK MASTER is ready to depart the event, staff at a Rest Stop will make announcements around

site (so please look/listen out for these.)

The group leaders will be easily identifiable and highly visible, with ‘TREK MASTER’ clearly written on their vest

and a special armband.

Trek Masters will set out from Rest Stops during the hours of darkness – and are there to help you!

teams man them. The site ‘Info Point’ will provide you with all the support you need if you are retiring from the

Challenge, looking for a shuttle back to Northwood House, or in need of a taxi for onward travel.

Mid-Point Stops Mid-Point stops are smaller sites to allow you to top up your water, energy drinks & snacks, and have a short rest &

visit the toilet. They are all under cover, and will be manned by our Event Management Team & medics.

Food & Snacks All dietary requirements will be catered for, and the meals and snacks provided will be nutritious, plentiful and varied.

There will be special Runners Menus at the main food stops – as we know the eating habits of full on runners are often

quite different to walkers! Also if there are certain snacks you have been training with or just ‘work’ for you – we

recommend bringing along some supplies with you – but there’s no need to over load your bag with lots of different

items.

What to do next...

Fundraising Don’t forget – you have until 1 month after the event to hand in your remaining 50% - so keep your fundraising going,

get in as much money as you can, and let’s try and raise over £500,000 for all the special charities involved.

Remember your kit & check the weather Don’t forget essential items of your kit – pack 2 days before the event and refer to our Kit List in the Participant’s Area.

Check the weather 2 days before the challenge to ensure you have everything covered come rain or shine.

Power up!

If you are planning on keeping your phone turned on throughout the challenge to Facebook & Tweet, we strongly

recommend you invest in a power charger (to ensure you always have battery should an emergency arise) – these can

be found for as little as £20 and will keep your phone going throughout the challenge!

Participant Area on website

Please make sure you keep updated by visiting the Participant’s Area of the website in the lead up to the event.
