To Tht' Islander:On Saturday evening, August

14, I had the opportunity tofind out first hand what I getfor the part of my tax dollarthat is allotted to the Sheriff'sDepartment of Lee County.

I have been a taxpaying, freeholding, registered voterin Lee County for the pasteleven years, living on Captivaand SanibelIslands.

Last Saturday a friend droveme into Fort Myers where Imade my usual deposit of thereceipts from my own businessin the bank on Cleveland Ave.Shortly afterward, while pro-ceeding into the city on Cleve-land, we were warned to thecurb by the flashing red lightof a sheriff's deputy's car.

Two Barneys (do you watchthe Andy Griffith TV Show?)immediately appeared, one oneither side of the car, andthe first question put to mydriver was, "Where youcomin'from?" And with the answer,"Sanibel Island," the law wentinto action. Without any furtherattempt to establish our iden-tification by asking for ournames, or driver's licenses,we were ordered out of thecar, leaned up against it andpatted all over, presumably Iguess for dangerous weapons. Then we were ordered intothe caged back seat of the dep-uty's car where a young, blondcivilian boy had been riding andthe Barney who seemed to begiving the orders told the otherone to drive our car to theCounty Jail while he chauffeuredus. I might add that they bothseemed very keyed up and insuch a nervous state that prob-

ably if we had so much asopened our mouths they wouldhave drawn their guns.

Arriving at the jail we wererushed into a barred room fur-nished with two hard woodenbenches and bolted, barred andlocked like the vault at FortKnox. While we were held therefor forty-five minutes incom-municado, again no effort wasever made to establish ouridentification! Also while wesat there, innumerable otherdeputies on some pretext orother managed to peep at us.One came for a drink of water, while most of theothers merelyrearranged papers on a deskwhich was conveniently set by*the barred door.

At last the ordeal was endedby the arrival of Deputy RalphSmith from the Islands whocouldn't have been more sur-prised to discover that it wasI who was being held on sus-picion of doing the desperatecrime on Sanibel. (We werenever told formally what thecrime was; later, by hearsay,we found out that two men,one with bushy hair, drivinga dark car, had hit Micky Powellover the head.) And Sanibel hasbeen having its biggest laughin years over the incident.

I called my attorney to seeif such things could be doneand he told me that personscould be held for four hoursin that way but usually ic wasn'tdone with such utter stupidityand ineptness. But he also addedthat the Sheriff had no choicein the men he could hire be-cause the pay is so low. (Ihave deleted part of my originalintended letter here as I mayneed my attorney if this letteris published. J.V.B,)

It is obvious that the reason-ing behind our detainment wasthe fact that the crime hadbeen perpetrated on Sanibel bytwo men in a dark car andwhen the Barney asked us wherewe came from and Sanibel wasthe answer, in his elementaryfashion he managed to add twoand two. This would lead oneto believe that these deputies

feel that every fleeing criminalwho is apprehended, immedi-ately reveals the place wherehe committed the crime. Isit possible?

Since my only personal ac-quaintance with the Sheriff'sDepartment has been DeputyRalph Smith on Sanibel, I havetaken it for granted that he wasthe rule. Now I am sure he isthe exception. He is not onlycourteous and helpful but in-telligent as well.

I have come to the con-clusion from this incident thatthe County Commissionerswould do a better service forLee County if they would for-get about raising their ownsalaries and give the Sheriff'sDepartment enough money sothat he could hire the properkind of man that is needed andgive him adequate training. After all, these men may bethe only contact our muchneeded tourist trade may havein Lee County and I wonderwhat kind of treatment tourists

will be given if such high-handed tactics such as I ex-perienced are given to LeeCounty residents.

I expect to be going intoFort Myers every Saturdaynight on my usual routine butnow whenever I pass a deputy'scar, I will no longer bethinking,"Thank God, I have that pro-tection" but "Good God, I won-der what that nut will do toembarrass Lee County."
