Iskraemeco solutions for Germany`s tailored approach In 2013 when most of Europe was racing towards accomplishing the 2020 smart metering goal, Germany took pause. After considering mul-tiple possible roll-out scenarios it chose a specific approach better suit-ed to its energy strategy. A phased approach will address the countries specific requirements on energy efficiency and renewable energy inte-gration. Iskraemeco was involved in the process of defining the German smart metering landscape from the start and has »full-requirement« solutions already at hand. Germany has always been one of the core markets for Iskraemeco . We have a thorough understanding for the business environment and the needs of our German customers . Since 2010, more than 450 .000 lean smart meters (the MT681 and MT175) have found its place in German households . Regular cooperation with major German utilities, such as RWE, Vattenfall, E .oN and ENBW have strengthened our presence on the market . A fruitful cooperation with the German Vodafone led to an own energy management system that brought along technology improvements and produced significant energy savings . Not only did the smart meters enable Vodafone to fulfil its sustain-ability goals, they also had a huge impact on cost optimization – according to Vodafone calculations, the investment was returned in only 9 months .

Since Germany did not commit to a nation-wide deployment of smart meters it had to produce a cost-benefit analysis to justify their decision . The result, the so-called Roll-out scenario Plus, recognizes the role smart meters play in supporting the restructuring of the German energy market around renewable energy and in lowering overall energy consumption . Following the decision on a higher level, the delivery of technical specifications was entrusted to the VDE association (Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technology) and the FNN subcommittee . The result of a thor-ough market research was the MS2020 (Messsystem 2020) specification defining the metering landscape for Germany .

Iskraemeco has been actively participating in the VDE association (within the FNN committee) from the beginning . This participation gave us in-

Iskraemeco is already cooperating with the German utility EnBW within the ROMI project - Roll-out Messsystem Infrastruktur. Ac-cording to the plans, EnBW will equip 10.000 smart metering end-points in the German state of Baden-Württemberg in 2015. This will be one of the first roll-outs of the MS2020 System.

depth understanding about the German smart metering concept . We trans-ferred the accumulated knowledge into our solutions that are a wholesome reflection of the German smart metering requirements .

The German plan involves the deployment of both, smart meters (with two-way communication) and intelligent meters with field modularity . The later have the option of being upgraded on a later stage if needed . Iskraemeco

has both solutions, the smart and the intelligent ready for the German market . The MT691 and the MT631 fully support the MS2020 specifications and rigorous requirements on data security and interoperability that were one of the main rea-sons behind Germany`s delay in smart metering deploy-ments . An alternative solution that is also in line with the set requirements, is the MT176 meter . The Gateway module can be effortlessly added in the housing without any ad-ditional modifications . Its main advantage is its size – small and compact it can easily fit into smaller spaces .

Iskraemeco`s AM550, with an innovative platform approach enables seamless integration of next generation smart metering functions into the smart grid. The platform addresses common functional smart meter-ing requirements set at the European level and makes adaptability to na-tional market requirements easy and cost-effective. When developing the product we focused on the key challenges our customers are facing when transitioning into a smart grid environment.

Total cost of ownership . Since resources are scarce, every investment has to be thoroughly planned and justified to deliver optimal results . Modern day utilities have reasonable grounds to demand quality, cost-effective andenduring solutions that deliver highest performance .

Future-proof investment . The smart metering landscape is still evolving – new technologies and new business models are being unveiled practically on a daily basis . Therefore, the utility must have the possibility to adapt quickly and effectively to any future changes in the metering infrastructure .

Flexibility . Flexible solutions that enable quick adaptations to different mar-ket requirements are a must . Changes/new developments in communica-tion, special requirements for distributed generation (photovoltaics, electric vehicles, wind turbines . .,) require specific modifications and upgrades that are costly and time consuming .

Consumer satisfaction . Modern day consumers are becoming more aware of their vital role in energy consumption . They expect specific services (based on smart metering functionalities) allowing them to manage their everyday consumption – by providing these added value services, utilities can build consumer loyalty and trust .

Data security . Smart meters collect and transmit much more data that in the past, therefore it is of extreme importance that data protection and privacy are properly addressed . Smart metering products must fully support securi-ty requirements determined on the European level and incorporate specific national requirements as well .

The highly flexible modular approach applied on the smart meters` hard-ware and software levels enables customers to reuse tested modules across the entire meter portfolio . While developing the meter, we put special focus on the meters` external communication modularity which addresses cur-rent and future communication needs . This way, any future developments in the customers` networks can be effectively and effortlessly addressed by upgrading and reusing existing communication modules .

Product Update

A thorough modular approach

First and foremost modularity is used in communication that is built on state of the art electronic components which enable complete flexibility regarding future communication technologies on all levels . A universal standardized transparent pass-through communication interface inside the meter facilitates effortless exchange of various communication modules – this gives utilities the needed flexibility for future business models . PLC communication modules are backward compatible and thus allow, for ex-ample, an easy switch from G1 to G3 communication technology . Customer specific applications for the Smart Grid add a whole new level to flexibility . All of the exchangeable modules (processing, metering, metrology, PLC …)

are proven and tested and optimized in cost and quality . This modular con-cept enables us to create a customer specific product much faster, capital-izing on previous development and utilizing the effects of scale . Utilities will invest in a solution that has been proven and tested several times before . Local/customer specific adaptations can be implemented with minimal costs and with a shorter time to market .

Sustainability

The AM550 follows the Fair Meter approach on sustainability, has a low power consumption and a design that together with optimized logistic services significantly lowers transportation and packaging costs . The flex-ibility in network topology coupled with robust measurement principles supports multi-directional energy flows for distributed generation such as photovoltaic panels, electric vehicles (EV`s) and wind turbines . The meter is made of recyclable material, making it easy to dismantle at the end of its life-cycle .

Functionality based on design

Not only that the AM550 features a unique and appealing design on the outside, it also fully sup-ports the meters` functionality . It is based on renowned design guide-lines (the Ulm school of design), making sure that every form has a function in use . Furthermore, the smart meter enables easy installa-tion and maintenance throughout its life-cycle .

High-level security for Austrian utilities

Data security and privacy are too sensitive and the benefits to consum-ers from smart metering are too great, not to give this subject the atten-tion it needs. The demand of Austrian utilities for high-level security is therefore more than justified. In the past months Iskraemeco installed a number of smart meters delivering high-level security to two of our Austrian customers.

Energie Steiermark and Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe entrusted the deliv-ery of smart metering system for the introductory pilot project to Iskraemeco . A complete smart metering system that encompasses smart meters (with PLC and GSM/GPRS communication), concentrators and SEP2W head-end system that is integrated into a partnering MDM system has been set up in multi-apartment buildings on different locations . To deliver the requested level of data security and privacy, authentication and encryption of data were carried out on all three levels - meter, concentrator and the MDM system .

In order to comply with the security requirements, rigorous testing of smart meters and the system itself was meticulously carried out . Smart meters that assure end to end security (security on the endpoints) facilitate a safe transfer of valuable metering data .

The pilot is only the first step in implementing large-scale smart metering sys-tems in these two regions . With the smart meters that have already been in-stalled so far, the two utilities are already performing automated billing, have better possibilities for grid monitoring and optimization, can secure a stable supply of energy and react more quickly to possible network disturbances .
