Our question and topic for this morning is:

WHAT IS COMPASSION?

This sermon has been a blessing for me to prepare. You see, for me compassion has been a hard thing to get my hands around. Even today, my wife continues to remind me that I don’t display enough compassion in my relationship with her. I realize my military and evangelist backgrounds have molded me into a “cut and dry, trust God and get the job done” kind of person. So I’m asking each of you to pray for me, that I’ll do a better job in practicing the things I’m about to preach to you.

Loved ones, the truth of the Bible reveals that mankind’s real problem is spiritual. We have a love problem, which is a heart problem, which is a sin problem.

Over and over the Holy Spirit commands God’s people, “To love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul (Joshua 22:5; Matthew 22:37). The pleasures of sin hinders us from keeping this command (Hebrews 11:25).

You and I are God’s workers. He is the heart specialist. Our responsibility as RN’s (Registered Neighbor’s), is to assist God, who “trieth the hearts and reins” (Psalm 7:9). A primary essential for Christians, in serving and meeting our neighbor’s physical and emotional needs, is to lead men and women to the realization of their lost spiritual condition.

Their need is to come to know God and be saved from their sins.

This need for salvation can only be met in Jesus Christ, for, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Once saved, their love and heart problem will then slowly disappear.

Mercy and compassion are closely tied together in the heart of the ONE “in whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13).

God said to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion” (Romans 9:15).

For the Christian to help others get their relationship and heart right with the Father in Heaven, we too must display compassion and mercy to our fellowman.

Before getting to the compassion portion of our lesson, let’s say a few things about mercy. Christians can and should show true mercy.

Mercy is a blessing from the Holy Spirit especially for those who respond to the Word of God by repenting and being baptized into Christ (Ephesians 1:3; Galatians 3:27).

Mercy is to be shown by Christians to all who need it; to unbelievers and even more so to believers, especially to those who are of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10).

Mercy should be shown in proportion to a person’s awareness that he needs it. This gives him the ability to receive it. The more they need it, the more we should show it.

Showing mercy is an activity whose objective is spiritual. Mercy often begins with a physical need, but the spiritual need of the recipient who receives your gift of love must always be the ultimate goal. In obtaining your objective, you are extending mercy that can lead to eternal life.

You can be obedient merciful Christians, but NOT perfectly without compassion. You have mind, emotion and will.

You see with the mind. You sense, you search, and you suffer with the heart of your emotions. Then you serve with the will.

You see a person’s need, and you become aware of it. By an act of the will, you choose to meet that need through mercy by giving them what they need.

In doing that, there can still be something lacking. It is factual and to a degree, it may be effectual, but it can still be cold (cut and dry, get the job done)!

It is the act of the emotion, that we will define as compassion, that turns an act of mercy into fruitfulness and gives the glory to our loving God.

You see a person in need. Then you sense the real desire and need of his heart. You search your own heart for the capacity to identify with that need. You suffer emotionally, if necessary, with him in his need. Then, having become compassionate, you have the ability to serve him with your mind, emotion and will.

In other words, to really exhibit mercy, you must experience compassion. Now, let’s get into the heart of our lesson.

WHAT IS COMPASSION?

Compassion is defined as: literally suffering with another; to feel the bowels yearn, to have pity in the inward parts, the seat of one’s feelings and affections.

Compassion is to be turned inside out by experiencing another’s torment. It is, in essence, experientially entering into the perspective of one who is in need, until you share the hurt, loneliness and fears with him. That is compassion.

Leadership in the absence of compassion is nothing more than cold formalism. It is of little value to society, and disruptive of benefit to the one who leads and those who would be led. Good works without loving compassion amount to nothing (cf. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

GOD’S PEOPLE ARE COMMANDED TO SHOW COMPASSION

The prophet of old told the people, “Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother” (Zechariah 7:9).

The Holy Spirit wrote through Peter and Jude: “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous” (1 Peter 3:8). “And of some have compassion, making a difference” (Jude 22).

COMPASSION CAN BE SEEN

To help us see it in action, let’s look at two stories from the Bible and another two from the world.

When baby Moses was laying in the ark on the Nile River, the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself (Exodus 2:5-10). She saw the little ark in the river and had her maid fetch it.

The Bible says, “And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” She knew he must have been one of the children that escaped her father’s evil command to kill the Hebrew baby boys. She must have been weeping with that baby. Her compassion led to mercy and through the providence of God, Moses’ own mother was hired to nurse him. “And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son.”

While teaching a certain lawyer the keys to eternal life, which are loving God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind, and your neighbor as yourself, Jesus told the story of a man who was robbed, wounded and left half dead by thieves (Luke 10:30-37). A priest and a Levite saw the injured man, but passed by on the other side.

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him.” In his heart, the Samaritan must have felt the wounds and half dead condition of the stranger. He showed mercy by binding the man’s wounds, taking him to an inn and paying the host to care for the injured man. That’s the fruit of compassion.

Great men of our world, some of renown and some whose names are never known, have demonstrated the same compassion and concern as these two Biblical characters.

Here is the true story of one such man. The Civil War broke out shortly after President Abraham Lincoln became the United States’ 16th president. This heart-rending story is about Lincoln’s act of compassion toward a dying soldier in the time of America’s greatest crisis.

Growing up in a poor family in Kentucky, Lincoln lost his mom to “milk sickness” when he was just nine years old.

As a boy, he also witnessed the passing of his elder sister, who died while giving birth to a stillborn son. Lincoln’s painful struggles during his early life resulted in his developing a heart of compassion and concern for others.

President Lincoln’s compassion was extended to all people, including the wounded soldiers who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for America’s freedom. Lincoln always displayed a kindly nature and deep earnest sympathy with the afflictions of the people resulting from the war.

It is said that out of compassion, President Lincoln traveled long distances to visit injured soldiers on the battlefield and hospitals on numerous occasions during the war. He tried to lift the soldiers up through his kind and caring words.

On one visit, doctors directed Lincoln to a young soldier who was approaching death. The President went over to his bedside, asking, “Is there anything I can do for you?”

Not recognizing who he was, the wounded young man whispered to the President with some difficulty, “Would you please write a letter to my mother?” Lincoln complied and carefully jotted down what the soldier said on a piece of paper.

The soldier said, “My dearest mother, I was badly hurt while doing my duty. I’m afraid I’m not going to recover. Don’t grieve too much for me, please. Kiss Mary and John for me. May God bless you and father.” The soldier stopped as he was too frail to continue. And so, Lincoln signed the letter, writing, “Written for your son by Abraham Lincoln.”

When the soldier saw the note Lincoln had written on his behalf, he was astonished to see “Abraham Lincoln’s” signature at the end. “Are you really the President?” the young man asked. Lincoln replied, “Yes, I am,” before asking if there was anything else, he could assist him with.

In response, the soldier said: “Would you please hold my hand? It will help to see me through to the end.” In the quiet room, the tall, gaunt president held the young man’s hand and offered him words of encouragement until he breathed his last.

Having the breadth of mind and compassion to listen to the needs of his people, President Lincoln was undeniably an excellent leader. Elders, preachers and all Christians should follow Lincoln’s example and extend our compassion toward others when they are experiencing hardship. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.

Another story…Some friends were at Auto Zone having their car worked on. While they were there, lunch time came around. The husband suggested going down to a diner a few doors away. After eating, they began to walk back. One man felt his foot come down on something that didn’t feel like sidewalk. When he lifted his foot, there was a tiny sparrow on the concrete.

He hadn’t squashed him, because he had lifted his foot up in time; however, the bird was looking a bit bewildered and obviously couldn’t fly. The man said something to his friends, and the group walked on.

However, the husband was no longer with the group. He had stayed and picked up the little sparrow and nursed it and taken it to some high shrubs next to a telephone pole. He was hoping that if there was any way it could make its way to fly, it would be safe. His wife seeing this turned to the group and said, "That is his compassion."

The man who nearly squashed the sparrow was totally concerned for the sake of his conscience whether he had killed the bird or not, but he wasn’t really concerned about the bird. Only the husband had a compassion for the bird that led to mercy.

The Scripture tells us that not a sparrow falls, but that the God of eternity stops what He is doing, stoops down and makes note of it (cf. Luke 12:6-7). The husband showed a real picture of that. That is compassion.

Compassion is reaching out to the sparrows of this world, who might not be so important, who are wounded, falling, and unable to fly on their own, and helping to put them somehow into the shelter of the one who can protect and perhaps heal them. In all cases, we must love them and do unto them what we desire others to do unto us (Matthew 7:12). That is compassion.

JESUS, OUR EXAMPLE OF COMPASSION

The compassion of Jesus MUST have been one of His most remarkable characteristics to the people of His day. The Lord’s compassion to the world must have been a staggering thing. Men were presented with the amazing concept of one who was the Son of God and yet was moved with compassion, moved to the depth of His being, again and again and again. For many that is the most precious thing about the Lord, our God.

What kind of concept of God do you have? Have you ever stopped to think about it?

Do you see Him as cold, factual, uncaring, even vindictive? If you see God in that light, you do NOT know the God of the Bible.

Let’s look quickly at Psalm 145:8-9: “The Lord is gracious, full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy. The Lord is good to all; and his tender mercies are over all his works.” From this passage we get a picture of the God of compassion.

As we continue this sermon, we are going to follow Jesus in two familiar stories. We will superimpose our circumstances upon His responses and see if in some way God might communicate to us the essence of compassion, that inner emotion that motivates the Christian to act in mercy.

First of all, we will walk with Jesus as He had compassion on those who crossed His path in His regular, day to day life. As Jesus walked, He preached.

Consider your life as a housewife, a widow, a salesman, a schoolteacher, a clerk, a policeman, a manager, a laborer, a retiree, or whatever walk of life you presently have. Visualize Jesus’ response in these two specific situations. From this, we will again try to grasp what the word compassion really means.

Before we begin in Matthew 20:30-34, we want to give you a little backdrop by looking at the context of the passage.

In Matthew 20:17-19, Jesus had called His disciples aside and cautioned them that He was about to be betrayed, tried and crucified. Have you ever stopped to realize how heavy the heart of Jesus must have been about this time? Think of His unfinished business from man’s perspective: the preaching of the gospel, the establishing of the church, the discipling of His followers. There was so much to be done, and so little time remained. By now, we would have imagined that His followers would have had such a burden for lost souls that they couldn’t stand it.

But unfortunately, their apathy and unconcern for the hurting souls around them was much like many of God’s disciples today.

In verses 20-24, we read of the absence of sensitivity of those who were closest to Jesus. James and John’s mother approaches Jesus to ask if her sons could have reserved seats in heaven, the best in the house. Have you ever had your children or those you were discipling seem to finally get a handle on humility and spiritual things, then they come up with the question, "What’s in it for me?" You just sigh in disbelief and think, "Oh, I thought they had the BIG picture." But you see, we all suffer from the same self-centeredness.

In verse 22, Jesus rebukes and corrects the disciples, and they argue with Him. He says, "Do you think you can drink from the same cup I can?" They respond, "You bet, Lord, we’re the ones who can.”

Jesus goes on to explain to them the reverse order of the Kingdom one more time. He says that the lower you get, the greater you are. The more you serve, the higher you go. The more you reach and claw for the top, the lower you go. It is a reverse order of spirituality. He that wants to be at the top must begin at the bottom. He that would be greatest among others must be a servant to all. That is the Christian faith.

After this, Jesus and His disciples started walking that treacherous walk from Jericho to Jerusalem. It was one of the most dangerous journeys in the Middle East because of the looters, bandits and wild animals. As they journeyed, as always, a pushing and shoving crowd formed around the Lord.

Try to imagine what it would be like. Celebrities have experienced this as they try to go about their daily lives with people pushing and shoving to get their autographs, or touch them or get their picture. They experience photographers with their professional flashbulbs glaring in their faces.

They never have a moment of peace or quiet. Visualize the shoving and clamoring. People were just wanting to touch Jesus and be heard.

We learn from this and other passages that this behaviour annoyed His disciples. They resented the crowd as an intrusion on their privacy. Some of these people were just curious, like they were going to a circus, waiting to see who Jesus would heal next. Some were evil men seeking a way to trap Jesus in a contradiction. Some of them were dirty, lame, blind and helpless. They were unlovely and unlovable outcasts. They slowed Jesus down. They called out to Him while others were trying to hear. The disciples were nauseated at their gall.

Two blind men were sitting by the roadside on this occasion (Matthew 20:30). They heard that Jesus was passing by. We read in Mark 10:46, that one of these men was Bar-ta-mae-us. Maybe he was someone of more noble birth. Maybe he was someone more important than the second one, because we don’t read about the second man anywhere else. Regardless, two blind men were sitting there.

The Scripture tells us that they cried out, “Have mercy on us, oh Son of David!” They knew who Jesus was. They called Him the Messiah. They were desperate to be helped.

Let’s look at the compassion of this crowd. We read in Matthew 20:31, “The multitude rebuked them.” The people were saying, “Keep still! We can’t hear the message.”

The blind men “cried the more saying, Have mercy on us, oh Lord, Thou Son of David!” By now, the crowd must have been ruthless. The disciples were still, no doubt, irritated over their recent power struggle. They were not too perceptive of the needs of others anyway. They were no doubt thinking, “Why don’t those blind men hush up. We want to hear the Master.”

Now here is the key to the whole experience. The next sentence says in verse 32, “And Jesus stood still.” The God of the universe stopped dead in His tracks. What was He going to do?

Would He have them flogged for disrespect? Would He speak a word and strike them dead? Jesus stopped. Now this wasn’t the governor of Jerusalem or the head of the Sanhedrin that Jesus stopped for; these were two blind beggars, sparrows, if you will, and Jesus stopped cold.

We want to ask you a question before we go on. Would you have stopped? You have a ministry to perform to all of the people around you who are just feeding on every word you say. A couple of social outcasts sitting over in the corner are screaming at the top of their lungs, “Have mercy! Have mercy!” What would you have done?

In the recent past, you may have encountered people who have been blinded in a spiritual sense and are all but crying out for help. Or there may have been people crossing your path who were suffering or lonely or sick. Did you stop, or did you use the excuse that you were late to the grocery store? Late to Bible study?

Jesus stood still. God always stands still when people cry out for mercy.

The next verse tells us that Jesus called them. Having stopped, He looked at them, focused His penetrating eyes on them and addressed His voice of authority to them and said, "What will ye that I should do for you?” Literally, "What can I do for you?" (Matthew 20:32).

By now the crowd must have stilled to a whisper. "What need do you have that I can meet?" asked Jesus.

You can almost hear them cry out in unison, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened” (v. 33). “We want to see!"

In verse 34 we read, “So Jesus had compassion on them.” Literally, His heart broke and there welled up within Him what it might feel like to be blind, begging for all you can get, being made fun of, being neither useful nor productive. This broke His heart. Jesus, just for a moment, experienced the agony of blindness. Have you ever done that?

Jesus did what He could do. He touched their eyes. They received their sight and followed Him.

Now, we ask you, have you tried spending a day with both eyes taped shut just so you could learn how a blind person really feels, and thus allowing you to better minister to them? Have you ever spent a day in a wheelchair just to experience the immobility, the frustration or the lack of independence of those who are lame? Have you ever gone even three days without food just so you can find out what a starving beggar really feels like? Have you ever gone into isolation and cut yourself off from everyone just for the purpose of understanding the heart of those who are emotionally lame, crippled in mind, depressed or unable to cope?

We tell you that is how you develop compassion. That is why those who have a disease have so much mercy toward those who get it after them. They have been there. Compassion means emotionally taking on their affliction. Jesus had compassion and He exercised mercy. The end result is the same as it always is - the blind men who had received their sight followed Him.

Let’s look at a final setting as we turn to our text in Mark chapter one. Here we see the compassion of Jesus on

one who is unlovely, unclean and unwanted.

Again we get a backdrop from the context of what had been taking place by reading in verse 23-31 that Jesus had just removed a demon from a man in the synagogue, and then healed Peter’s mother-in-law.

We will begin reading in Mark 1:32. “And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto Him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.”

They emptied the sanitariums and the hospitals and dumped the whole load on Jesus’s doorstep. We continue, “And all the city was gathered together at the door” (v. 33). We see here that the rest were spectators. They had come to see the action. Every sick person and every person with a demon was on Jesus’ doorstep waiting to be healed, and the rest of the city was standing behind them at the door just like they had bought tickets to a circus.

Here we learn one of the most beautiful concepts of how to build a congregation. You meet people ’ s needs. It

doesn’t say that it was visitation night. It doesn’t say it was a “Bring-Your-Neighbor” Sunday. It simply says that Jesus was meeting the needs of people where they were. There were so many people at the door that He couldn’t get out. That is how the Kingdom grows. That is how churches are built. Christians meeting people’s needs.

Let’s continue: “And He healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew Him” (v. 34). A loose translation is that He told the demons to, “Shut up!” They knew who He was, so they obeyed. Satan’s troops are always paralyzed at the name of Jesus. It tells us in this passage that it is because they know who He is.

We continue in verse 35. This is another beautiful passage as Jesus deals with the priority of being alone with God. “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, He went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” (v. 35).

We need to realize that the night before, He had been healing and dealing with sick people. Even so, He gets up early. If anyone deserved a good night’s sleep, it was

Jesus; but He set His alarm clock at 4 A.M., and then tiptoed out to a quiet place to spend time alone with His Father. He wasn’t trying to be religious. He wasn’t trying to be a martyr and punish His body. Jesus just had a list of priorities, and the list says that you never get tired enough or busy enough to skip priority number one, time alone in prayer with God. So He slipped out, hopefully to have time with His Father.

Let’s look at the response of the saints who were following Him. “And Simon and they that were with Him followed after Him. And when they had found Him, they said unto Him, All men seek for thee" (vs. 36-37). They told Jesus that He had a problem, because everyone was looking for Him. Jesus knew that. He was just trying to take time alone to be with the Father.

We see in the next verse what His response was: “And He said unto them, "Let us go into the next towns, that I

may preach there also: for therefore came I forth" (v. 38).

We see in Jesus’ response that perfect balance between peace and urgency. He knew God was in control, so there was no panic. He also knew that the people had a need, and there was no time to waste. It was a perfect balance. Brethren, do you have that balance?

We see in the next verse: “And He preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils” (v. 39).

His compassion, mercy and love continued to be expressed by spiritually alleviating the afflictions of the people around Him. In verse 40, we read a startling one-liner, “And there came a leper to Him…” Now here was Jesus in the midst of a busy evangelistic campaign, and a leper came up to Him.

We can’t pass over this verse lightly, because we must visualize what it must be like to be a leper, then we can

visualize what went on in the mind of Christ and those around Him.

In Matthew 10:8, Jesus sent the twelve out and said, "Heal the sick and cleanse the lepers." In the New Testament there is no disease regarded with more terror and pity than leprosy.

There are three kinds of leprosy. The first is nodular.

It begins with overcoming pains in the joints. The victim has a hard time moving.

Then there appears symmetrical, discolored patches on the skin.

On these patches little nodes form, especially in the facial area.

The whole appearance of the face changes until it becomes grotesque.

The victim loses his appearance as a human being. The eyes begin to stare, the voice changes its sound as it wheezes to the point of being indistinguishable.

The hands and the feet ulcerate with growths everywhere, making it painfully nearly impossible to walk or to work. At this time of history, leprosy took about nine years to run its course, before the victim died.

The second kind is anesthetic leprosy. This initially begins with the loss of feeling in the nerve endings. The victim might get scalded with boiling water and not realize it because of the lack of feeling.

Patches and blisters begin to appear on the skin.

The fingers and toes begin to fall off. The victim can lose whole hands and feet.

This is a slower kind of torture that often took twenty to thirty years to disfigure its victim. This left him in total

humiliation, wracked with pain, socially banned from society, emotionally scared, unclean, deformed and tormented. This is hard to talk about. I know it’s hard for you to see.

The third type of leprosy is a combination of the two. This kind was the most prevalent in Jesus’ day. Can you imagine it?

In each case, the victim had to walk about with torn clothes, a bared head and a covering on his upper lip. Everywhere he went, he had to announce his presence with his own feeble cry, "Unclean, unclean, unclean."

Even in the Middle Ages, it was the same. The church had a burial service and read over the victim as if he were dead though he was still alive. He had to wear black, live in a leper colony and couldn’t come into the church service but had to peek through a leper’s squint, a little hole cut in the wall. This was the lot of the leper.

He was like a dead man, tortured, rejected, humiliated and unclean. We have seen few actual lepers in our day

here in America, but there are hordes of people whose lot in life seems just as hopeless.

It is with this in mind that we can visualize the circumstances in this passage. It says, “And there came to Him a leper, beseeching him, and kneeling down to Him, and saying unto him, "If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean” (Mark 1:40).

As we look at this man, we need to know that he was risking his life to speak to Jesus. Legally, he was not supposed to. Secondly, he was revealing his faith to speak to Jesus. There was no known cure for leprosy, yet somehow in his faith, he claimed total healing from the Master.

He said to Jesus, "You can do it. The question is, will You?"

The Bible says, “And Jesus, moved with compassion…” (v.41). Here is that phrase again, “Moved with compassion.” Locked in its context is the following

unavoidable interpretation. Jesus entered into the lepers body, so to speak, in His mind’s eye, in an instant felt the pain, the reproach, the hopelessness and the helplessness of a leper. Jesus, at that moment, had His body disfigured, His face indistinguishable, His coarse voice wheezing, "Unclean, unclean, unclean." Literally, Jesus emotionally became a leper. That is what those three words mean, “moved with compassion.”

Having entered emotionally in His bowels, in His deepest afflictions, into the lepers life and lot, He extended mercy. As we read in verse 41, Jesus “Put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean” (v. 41). Jesus’ pure, undefiled life, touched the untouchable, the outcast, the homeless. He risked becoming unclean to heal another. He spoke to him gently and compassionately.

Jesus said, "I will. I do choose to heal you." At whatever the cost, having entered into his suffering, Jesus said, "I want to be a part of his healing."

We then read the word, “immediately.” This is a good word to study in Scripture. “Immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed” (v. 42).

Obeying the law, Jesus ordered him to go to the priest and declare himself clean as is taught in Leviticus 13 and 14.

Now the keys to this passage seems obvious.

First of all, Jesus was aware that He always needed time alone with the Father.

Secondly, Jesus was never too busy or too tired or too spiritually drained for people. His life was not an organization filled with planning meetings and the like. His life was people. Look at your calendar sometime, at

what you have written in the little boxes. Do you have activities, meetings and functions, or do you have the names of people that you are meeting with, having fellowship with and ministering to?

Compassion will lead you to use your time to be with people, people who need you. Men, you can use your breakfast or lunch hours or coffee breaks to be with other men who have spiritual needs and whose lives you can minister to. Women, don’t waste the precious opportunities you have whether in person, or on the telephone, to pour your life into people.

Another key to this passage is that the social outcasts of society were Jesus’ favorite people to reach out and touch. They were aware of their need, and they were usually crying for help. Jesus would always stop. He would always look. He would always listen.

He would always reach out and touch them no matter what society thought and no matter what it cost Him.

The source of His mercy was His compassion. When He saw a blind man, emotionally He became blind. When the leper cried out, emotionally, He became a leper, grotesque and hopeless. Then having totally identified with the person who had the need, He was moved with compassion and extended mercy.

If you continue following Jesus in the gospels, you will watch His compassion with those who had chronic needs, with those who were stricken with grief, with those who had no food and see how He viewed them. You will also see how He viewed the mob and life’s unplanned interruptions.

Loved ones, as you go about your daily tasks, ask God to give you a spirit of compassion for the widows, the orphans, the prisoners, those who are terminally ill, those who are jobless, for that blind beggar on a downtown street corner, for the dirty addict, for the

unshaven and friendless homeless souls who are prowling the city streets like an animal.

Ask God for the grace to somehow enter in experientially to that person’s life. Imagine their hurt and humiliation. Ask for the grace to emotionally enter your husband, your wife or your children. We need to try to live in their world in order to know how to extend mercy and compassion.

Loved ones, we don’t appreciate one another as we ought. We don’t think about one another, because we don’t walk in their shoes, we don’t breathe their breath, we don’t think about what they go through.

Compassion means that you live the hurts of another in your own emotions. Your compassion will lead to true mercy.

When people cross your path, if possible, stop and look at them. Having stopped, speak gently to them. Having

spoken, listen compassionately to what their real needs are. If possible, let your life touch their life with Jesus.

Oh what bliss will be ours as we die daily to our self-centered existence and look on the things of others (1 Corinthians 15:31; Philippians 2:3-5).
