0.1 This Indian Standard (Part 1) (SecondRevision) was adopted by the Bureau of IndianStandards on 30 October 1987, after the draftfinalized by the Structural Safety SectionalCommittee had been approved by the CivilEngineering Division Council.

0.2 A building has to perform m any functionssatisfactorily. Am ongst these functions are theutility of the building for the intended use andoccupancy, structural safety, fire safety; andcom pliance w ith hygienic, sanitation, ventilationand daylight standards. The design of thebuilding is dependent upon the m inim umrequirem ents prescribed for each of the abovefunctions. The m inim um requirem entspertaining to the structural safety of buildingsare being covered in this code by w ay of layingdow n m inim um design loads w hich have to beassum ed for dead loads, im posed loads, snowloads and other external loads, the structurew ould be required to bear. S trict conform ity toloading standards recom m ended in this code, it ishoped, w ill not only ensure the structural safetyof the buildings w hich are being designed andconstructed in the country and thereby reducethe hazards to life and property caused by unsafestructures, but also elim inate the w astage causedby assum ing unnecessarily heavy loadings.

0.3 This Indian Standard code of practice wasfirst published in 1957 for the guidance of civilengineers, designers and architects associatedw ith planning and design of buildings. Itincluded the provisions for the basic design loads(dead loads, live loads, w ind loads and seism icloads) to be assum ed in the design of buildings.In its first revision in 1964, the w ind pressureprovisions w ere m odified on the basis of studiesof w ind phenom enon and its effect on structures,undertaken by the special com m ittee inconsultation w ith the Indian M eteorologicalD epartm ent. In addition to this, new clauses onw ind loads for butterfly type structures wereincluded; w ind pressure coefficients for sheetedroofs both curved and sloping, were m odified;seism ic load provisions were deleted (separatecode having been prepared) and m etric system of

w eights and m easurem ents w as adopted.

0.3.1 With the increased adoption of the code, anumber of comments were received onprovisions on live load values adopted fordifferent occupancies. Simultaneously, live loadsurveys have been carried out in America andCanada to arrive at realistic live loads based onactual determination of loading (movable andimmovable) in different occupancies. Keepingthis in view and other developments in the fieldof wind engineering, the Sectional Committeeresponsible for the preparation of the standardhas decided to prepare the second revision inthe following five parts:

combinationsEarthquake load is covered in a separate

standard, namely IS : 1893-1984* which shouldbe considered along with the above loads.0.4 This standard deals with dead loads to beassumed in the design of buildings and same isgiven in the form of unit weight of materials.The unit weight of other materials that arelikely to be stored in a building are alsoincluded for the purpose of load calculationsdue to stored materials.0.4.1 This standard incorporates IS : 1911†published in 1967. The unit weight of materialsincorporated in this standard are based oninformation available through published IndianStandards and various other publications.0.4.2 This edition 3.1 incorporates AmendmentNo. 1 (December 1997). Side bar indicatesmodification of the text as the result ofincorporation of the amendment.0.4.3 The values given in this standard have beenrounded off in accordance w ith IS : 2 - 1960‡.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This code (Part 1) covers unit weight/massof materials, and parts or components in abuilding that apply to the determination ofdead loads in the design of buildings.1.1.1 The unit weight/mass of materials thatare likely to be stored in a building are alsospecified for the purpose of load calculationsalong with angles of internal friction asappropriate.

NOTE 1 — Table 1 gives the unit weight mass ofindividual building materials in alphabetical order;Table 2 covers the unit weight mass of parts orcomponents of a building; and Appendix A gives unitweight mass of stored materials.

2. BUILDING MATERIALS

2.1 The unit weight/mass of materials used inbuilding construction are specified in Table 1.
