0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institutionon 22 September 1971, after the draft finalized by the Artificial LimbsSectional Committee had been approved by the Consumer ProductsDivision Council.

0.2 The formulation of Indian Standards for artificial limbs, prosthetic andorthotic appliances and rehabilitation equipment has been taken up at theinstance of the Advisory Committee for Development of Surgical Instru­ments, Equipment and Appliances, Government of India.

0.3 Whirlpool bath is a rehabilitation item used for giving hydrotherapyto the patients. Means are provided for heating water in the bath and apowerful jet of water mixed with air gives a whirl. This also provides asoothing massaging action for the injured limb. This bath is suitable forproviding hydrotherapy for both upper and lower extremities.

0.4 This standard is one of a series of Indian Standards on rehabilitationequipment. Other standards published so far in the series are:

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the requirements pertaining to materials,shape, dimensions, manufacture, workmanship, finish and safety for whirl­pool baths.

3. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS

3.1 A typical arrangement of whirlpool bath is shown in Fig. 1 and 2.However, other arrangements fulfilling the requirements of this specifica­tion shall also be acceptable.

4. MOTOR RATING

4.1 The motor shall conform to IS: 996-1964§. The rated output of themotor shall be 370 Wand the rated speed shall be 2880 rev/min. Itshall run on a single phase 50 Hz ac supply.

5.: CONSTRUCTION5.1 The bath itself shall be fabricated by beading and soldering and itshall be leakproof.

5.2 The recommended minimum and maximum levels of water in the bathshall be clearly marked inside the bath.

5.3 A drain cock shall be provided in the bottom to facilitate completeremoval of stale water from the bath and for cleaning purposes.

5.4 The heater shall be provided on the side near the bottom and shall beso placed as not to hurt the patient when the bath is in use. Thethermostat adjusting dial shall appear on one of the sides.

5.5 The thermostat adjusting dial shall be provided with a metal covercapable of being locked to prevent tampering with the thermostat setting.

5.6 The quantity of water pumped out shall be controlable by means of aflap or some other suitable device.

5.7 The damper in the air-pipe in fully closed position shall not permit anyair bubble into the jet.

5.8 The motor-pump assembly shall be mounted on the bath over a shaftand shall be capable of being turned and fixed at angle, if necessary.

5.9 One indicator lamp each of distinctly different colour shall be fitted inthe mains input circuit and the thermostat circuit. The lamp inmains input circuit shall operate at all times after the bath is switched on.The lamp in the thermostat circuit shall glow only when the heatingcircuit is on. .

6. WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH6.1 The bath shall be polished bright. All mild steel fittings which areoutside shall be either plated or finished by hot stoving enamel spraypainting.. The plating shall conform to Service Grade No.1 of IS: 1068­1968*. If painted, prior to painting, the surfaces shall be degreased,rust-proofed by phosphating and then suitably protected by an anti-corrosive primer, either by brushing or spray painting. .

6.2 With maximum amount of water discharging from the pump and theair damper fully open, a vigorous whirl shall be created in the bath,

6.3 The motor and the immersion heater shall be suitably insulatedelectrically from the rest of the bath. The leakage current shall bemeasured as in 40 of IS: 302-l967t. The leakage current value shall notexceed the permissible value stated therein.

6.4 The entire bath, with the motor-pump assembly mounted, shall becompletely stable and shall not have a tendency to overturn.

6.5 If specifically desired by the purchaser, the bath shall be supplied withcastor fittings to make it mobile.

7. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

7.0 The precautions given in 7.1 to 7.3 below shall be observed during theuse of the bath to prevent accident and damage.

7.1 The temperature of the bath shall be checked up with a thermometerevery time before giving treatment to the patient. This is recommendedbecause in the event of a failure of the thermostat to operate at the pre-setvalue, the bath will get overheated and will cause blisters or burns to thepatient.

7.2 The water level inside the bath shall be maintained within limitsmarked inside by the manufacturer.

7.3 When treating a patient the bath shall always be placed on a rubbermatting and the patient's chair or stool shall also be placed on the rubbermatting to avoid electric shock caused by accidental leakage.

8. MARKING

8.1 The bath shall be marked with the following:

a) Manufacturer's name, initials or recognized trade-mark.b) Heater rating.c) Thermostat rating.d) Rating of the electric motor.

8.1.1 The product may also be marked with Standard mark.

8.1.2 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of theBureau of Indian Standards Act, .1986 and the Rules and Regulations madethereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use ofStandard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtainedfrom the Bureau of Indian Standards.

9. PACKING

9.1 The bath shall be packed as agreed to between the purchaser and thesupplier.
