iPad’s supporting Cobb County Technology VisionThis technology will allow all

students equitable access to informational, instructional and communication resources.

Allows teachers and students to use the technology to extend their learning beyond the school day and traditional classroom.

iPad’s supporting Cobb County Technology VisionStudents will be able to collaborate

with other schools, peers, educators and professionals from around the world.

Students, teachers, administrators and county office personnel will be able to get student performance data immediately which will help with instructional planning and timely feedback.

ObjectivesThe main objective is to increase

student engagement and learning while using technology as a instructional resource and tool.

This will allow teachers to differentiate the learning according to the students level. Teachers can choose apps that are appropriate to their learning level.

Key BenefitsStudents have the ability to pull

information from a multitude of resources.

Teachers can use the technology as resource tool, teaching tool, facilitation tool or assessment tool.

Students will be able to share information with peers and professionals instantaneously.

iPad and NSTE-SThe iPad can help our students technology skills

be in alignment with national technology standards.

Students will become proficient in the use of technology (NETS-S 1)

Students will use the iPad to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. (NETS-S 3)

Students will use different media formats to collaborate, publish and interact with peers. (NETS-S 4)

Students will use the iPad as a research tool (NETS-S 5)

Target PopulationThe enrollment of the county is

over 109,000 students. 45% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. The graduation rate in 2013 was 76.5%.

With almost half of the student population on free/reduced lunch, the access to this technology would give most students a resource they would never be able to afford.

Target Population (Continued)All schools in the CCSD have DSL

or higher internet connection.All schools in the CCSD have

wireless capabilities.All CTAE teachers in county have

a iPad provided by the county office.

Equipment and SoftwareOver 75,000 free education apps

are available through the app store.Paid apps start at $0.99.The iPad network is compatible

with county network.Students would need to purchase

headphones.

Technical SupportCCSD provides technology support

for every school in the county. CCSD has a customer care center

available from 8 am to 6 pm.CCSD has a web help desk for

teachers and administrators.Apple has a 2 year limited

warranty for all hardware in their education package.

LimitationsiPads are Wi-Fi only, so students

would need internet Wi-Fi at home to access the internet or use most apps.

iPads are fragile and cases will need to be bought to protect each one.

iPad batteries have a short lifespan and classrooms will need to be able to accommodate charging requirements.

If school Wi-Fi is interrupted it will affect iPad service.

Cost of TechnologyThe iPad mini cost ranges from $300

to $600.The iPad Air cost ranges from $600 to

$900.The iPad cost ranges $400 to $600.Protective iPad case ranges from $10

to $100.County will save money by putting

books, calculators, word processors all on one device.

Potential Funding SourcesThe Cobb County Schools Foundation is

designed to raise money for school funds.

CCSD could put in next SPLOST referendum.

Administrators, Teachers can write grant proposals.

DonorsChoice.org is a website designed to connect teachers with donors.

Local businesses and technology firms can donate funds.

meaningful learning goals by allowing the student to potentially participate in real-life scenarios.

How Could This Technology be Used to Differentiate Instruction?Teachers can use different apps

for different learners. There are apps for all levels and types of learners.

Teachers can use the iPad to incorporate the same content in different ways.

Students can access their information outside the school environment to remediate or accelerate their learning.

How can this technology meet the need for all of our students?Connect all students to information in the

digital world.All students would have access to a wide

variety of educational resources/Students with disabilities could use the iPad

as an Assistive technologyDifferent apps can enhance learning for

special education, regular education and ELL students.

Digital equity for all students would increase.All students would have access to device at

home as well as school.

How Could This Technology Promote Communication?Students can use discussion boards and

blogs for class discussions.Students can share ideas and lessons

from other students around the world studying the same subject.

Teachers can use different avenues of contacting parents other than email or phone. For example, teachers could use Skype, Twitter or other social media to show students work or contact parents.

Safety, Health, Legal or Ethical IssuesThe iPad can cause strain on neck because

users have tendency to hunch over screen.iPad does not give a full range of viewing

angles.All students will need to be trained on

becoming a digital citizen. Student will need to know copyright laws

pertaining to using items off the net as well as proper internet etiquette and usage.

Evaluation of ResearchThe main benefit of using an iPad

is that it is a versatile and powerful tool. Students and teachers have access to a plethora of education apps as well as using the web for research and class resources.

It is a unique and diverse way for teachers to deliver instruction which in turn engages students.

Evaluation of Research (Continued)A recent study, The iPad as a Tool for

Learning (2012), has found that “teachers have identified significant benefits for their workload and have also identified cost savings. Students are more motivated when using iPads. The quality and standard of pupil work and progress is rising and the appropriate use of Apps aids learning.”

Evaluation of Research (Continued)According to Chauhan (2013), the five

benefits for using the iPad are:Compatibility – the iPad is fully

compatible for learning basics. Cost-Effective – Schools will save money

that would otherwise be spent for power to operate massive computer systems.

Environmentally Friendly – massively cut down the use of paper which is ultimately safer for the environment.

load in students backpack will lower back problems in our students.

Interaction – An iPad allows students and teachers to create and share content with others. Students will not have to wait another school day to find answers to their problems.

Implementation PlanWe would use the Concerns Based

Adoption Model (CBAM).We would take the teachers and

this technology and fit it in my curriculum?

I think if we can walk our teachers and administrators through these steps then they will be prepared to implement and succeed using this technology.

Professional LearningWith ongoing Professional Learning

using the CBAM implementation model, we can formulate the best plan for our teachers and administrators to be successful.

I would break up professional learning into novice and intermediate iPad users and then introduce them to the educational uses based on their technology comfort level.

ReflectionI originally chose this technology

as a resource for my students. The more I studied and researched this technology, I realized the impact that it can have on education.

I had no idea that an iPad could essentially replace the book bag and give our students a one-stop shop for all of their educational needs.

Reflection (Continued)Our school systems need to stay up

with the times, most students now use some type of social media to communicate and we think email is appropriate. Most teachers think if they let their kids go to the computer lab for research they are engaging their students. If we could implement this technology in our schools, we could show our teachers how powerful a tool an iPad can be in education.
