-a machine for converting thermal energy into mechanical energy or power to produce force and motion.

Two types of engines:

Internal combustion engines

External combustion engines

-is an engine in which the combustion of a fuel occurs in a combustion chamber inside and integral to the engine.

-is a heat engine where an (internal) working fluid is heated by combustion of an external source, through the engine wall or a heat exchanger.
