Introduction For any given port diameter and valve plug travel, the tables in this section show the maximum allowable pressure drop at shutoff for each actuator, facilitating proper actuator sizing for many control applications. Some selections have been further limited due to valve flowing pressure drop limitations. Additional actuator constructions can be selected by using a more complicated and more exact force method found in Section B of this catalog. These pressure drop tables provide sizing information for actuators used on the general valve construction and application conditions described below. (The Fisherr GX control valve and actuator follow a different actuator selection process than other Fisher sliding‐stem products. Please refer to the following section entitled, “Fisher GX”). 1. Normal flow direction (determined from individual valve bulletins) and push‐down‐to‐close valve plug action. 2. Pressure drop (nP) is equal to maximum inlet pressure. 3. Single PTFE packing. 4. Pressure and temperature limitations determined by the specific valve body and trim materials. 8. For piston and spring‐biased piston actuators, the tables list supply pressures for either 3 to 15 or 6 to 30 psig signal ranges. For spring‐and‐diaphragm actuators, an available supply pressure of 0 to 18 psig is assumed with a 3 to 15 psig signal range, and a 0 to 33 psig supply pressure is assumed with a 6 to 30 psig signal range. 9. Except where indicated, standard seat loading by shutoff class is used per Catalog 14 Section B. 10. No dynamic instability due to negative gradients. These tables are arranged by unbalanced or balanced valve construction and then by increasing port diameter for each actuator type. • IntroductionFor any given port diameter and valve plug travel, thetables in this section show the maximum allowablepressure drop at shutoff for each actuator, facilitatingproper actuator sizing for many control applications. Some selections have been further limited due to valveflowing pressure drop limitations.

Additional actuator constructions can be selected byusing a more complicated and more exact forcemethod found in Section B of this catalog.

These pressure drop tables provide sizing informationfor actuators used on the general valve constructionand application conditions described below. (TheFisher GX control valve and actuator follow a differentactuator selection process than other Fishersliding‐stem products. Please refer to the followingsection entitled, “Fisher GX”).

    1. Normal flow direction (determined from individualvalve bulletins) and push‐down‐to‐close valve plugaction.

    2. Pressure drop (P) is equal to maximum inletpressure.

    3. Single PTFE packing.

    4. Metal seating surfaces for all but Fisher ET valveswith Class V shutoff.

    5. Shutoff classes per ANSI/FCI 70‐2 and IEC 60534‐4.

    6. Shutoff pressure drops not exceeding 6000 psi.

    7. Pressure and temperature limitations determinedby the specific valve body and trim materials.

    8. For piston and spring‐biased piston actuators, thetables list supply pressures for either 3 to 15 or 6 to 30psig signal ranges. 9. Except where indicated, standard seat loading byshutoff class is used per Catalog 14 Section B.

    10. No dynamic instability due to negative gradients.

These tables are arranged by unbalanced or balancedvalve construction and then by increasing portdiameter for each actuator type. (The trim parts in abalanced design minimize the net fluid flow forcescreating static unbalance, making possible theselection of a smaller actuator.)

The valve designs included in this section are listed inthe following table.

    Fisher GX

The standard GX control valve and actuator systemrequires no actuator sizing. Each GX has a pre‐selectedactuator size based on valve size and port diameter. The standard supply pressure range to the GX actuatorwill be 4 to 6 barg (58 to 87 psi).      750ACT ‐‐ replaces size 225 actuator for addedpressure drop capability

Each of the above options should be applied to baseGX selections which may impact the maximumpressure drop and shutoff class. Please reference theFisher GX Bulletin Supplement, 51.1:GX(S1),D103209X012 for further details.

    3. The maximum allowable pressure drops are equalto the maximum inlet pressure. The allowable pressuredrops are the maximum pressure differentials at whichthe actuator can still close the valve.

    4. Unlike the easy‐e™ and other sliding‐stem valves, the GX does not use Group 1 actuator mounting.Instead, the GX uses a trapped bonnet that is clampedbetween the actuator and the valve body. The GXactuator is not used on any other sliding‐stem valve.

    5. In the case of alloy constructions, the maximumallowable air supply pressure to the actuator has beenlimited in certain cases. When supplied with a 3582i I/Ppositioner, maximum allowable air supply is 3.44 barg(50 psig). This will require a lower supply option to abase FS number, which may be further limited in thecase of alloy constructions.

Sizing Procedure1. Locate the appropriate tables for the desiredactuator type. The tables are appropriate for thebalanced or unbalanced valve body designs listedabove.

    2. Enter the table for the given port diameter andtravel.

    3. For all designs, find the yoke boss diameter thatmatches the yoke boss on the given valve body.

    4. Begin with the smallest actuator size listed in theactuator size column, and read from left to right tofind an actuator construction that will allow therequired pressure drop. Proceed to larger actuatorsizes or to a greater air supply pressure as necessary.

    5. To order the actuator, specify the constructiondetails in Fisher FIRST 2.

IntroductionThe information provided in this section enables theuser to determine the force requirements of asliding‐stem valve and match this force to an availableactuator. Additional sliding‐stem actuator sizinginformation using only the valve pressure drop as abase can be found in section A of this catalog.

The table of contents provides page numberreferences to specific information for sizing the variousvalve body and actuator constructions. The majorsubsections of this section enable the user to:

    1. Determine valve body force requirements undergiven service conditions.

    2. Match the valve body force requirements with anappropriate actuator from the actuator tables, inwhich most constructions are covered, and

    3. Perform calculations to select an actuator for otherspecific conditions, such as reverse flow direction ornon‐standard travel.

Figures and tables within each division provide data asneeded for each step in the actuator sizing procedure. In addition, the actuator selection division includesnecessary ordering information.

The sample calculations illustrate fully, and provide arationale for, the actuator sizing techniques. This thirdmajor division clarifies the techniques used andpresents a sizing method which can be applied tothose non‐standard conditions or applications (forexample, a non‐standard travel requirement) thatcannot be picked directly from the actuator tables.

Basic Valve Body ForceRequirementsThe force required to operate a control valve mustinclude:

    A. Force to overcome static unbalance of the valveplug

    B. Force to provide seat load

    C. Force to overcome packing friction

    D. Additional forces required for certain specificapplications or constructions.

    Total force required = A + B + C + D

Calculate the forces which must be included in thebase equation from each of the following four majorsections.

    A. Force to Overcome StaticUnbalance

    (1) Use table 1 to determine if the valve construction isbalanced or unbalanced. (The trim parts in a balanceddesign minimize the net fluid flow forces creatingstatic unbalance, making possible the selection of asmaller actuator.)

    (2) Use figures 1 and 2 to determine if the valve is apressure‐tends‐to‐open or pressure‐tends‐to‐closeconstruction.

    (3) Use the applicable equation below to calculate theforce required to overcome static unbalance. Theterms used in the equations are:

    Force A = Force to overcome static unbalance, lbP1 = Upstream pressure, psigP2 = Downstream pressure, psigAport = Port area, inch2 (from table 2, 2A, or 2C)Astem = Stem area, inch2 (from table 4)Aunb = Unbalance area, inch2 (from table 2)

  • Pressure‐Tends‐To‐Close

    Note

Since pressure tends to close the valve in theseconstructions, a negative sign has been placed in front of thebrackets of these equations. This indicates that pressure isassisting, rather than opposing the actuator in closing thevalve.

Because the A value is negative, while B, C, and D arepositive, the force required to close the valve will be smallerthan for pressure‐tends‐to‐open constructions.

However, when calculating the force required to open thevalve, A, C, and D all oppose the actuator. Since seat loadingis not considered when opening the valve, B is now zero.

For this reason, the total force required (equation on pageB‐1) must be calculated for both opening and closing thevalve. For all but the Fisher 585C actuators, the larger ofthese force requirements is then used to size the actuator. For 585C actuators, both the opening and closing forces areused in the sizing procedure.

To calculate the closing force, solve the equation given onpage B‐1 using the A value as determined by the appropriateequation below. To calculate the opening force, drop thenegative sign from the A value determined below, and add Cand D.
