Inpharma 1244 - 1 Jul 2000 Intracoronary adenosine is a useful adjunct to primary angioplasty in patients with acute MI (myocardial infarction), say researchers in Italy. In this pilot study, 54 such patients were randomised to receive adenosine 4mg (n = 27) or saline, distal to the coronary obstruction prior to reperfusion. All patients achieved angiographic success. Post-angioplasty, 27 adenosine recipients had TIMI grade 3 flow, compared with 19 saline recipients (p < 0.05). Compared with saline recipients, adenosine recipients had significantly lower incidences of inhospital mortality (5 vs 0 patients) and Q-wave MI (23 vs 16 patients). Left ventricular wall motion improved in significantly more segments, and deteriorated in significantly fewer segments, in adenosine, compared with saline, recipients. Marzilli M, et al.
