DeaR mINIsTRY LeaDeR,
Welcome to The Annual Catalog, 2013 edition.
When InterVarsity Press opened its doors in 1947, the publishing vision spoke of introducing
ideas that engage the culture and lead the church. As you browse through these pages,
you will recognize that same commitment in every title. You’ll also find a lot of extras that
should be of interest to you. Whether it’s a vision statement on leadership development in
the church (page 10), an introduction to a great new Bible study series (page 15), breaking
news on IVP’s acquisition of Biblica Books (page 37) or an insider’s view of editing a Bible
dictionary (page 57)—we did our best to make this catalog worth your while!
We also want to introduce you to our imprints as a way to help you find the titles most useful
to you. At the core of each of these imprints is IVP’s desire to equip and encourage leaders
to grow in their knowledge and expression of faith. On the opposite page you’ll find a
description of each imprint and its area of focus. Throughout the catalog you’ll see miniature
logos next to the IsBns of each title. Hopefully this gives you a bit more insight into the style
and level of writing on the title you are considering.
Within these pages, you will find inspiration, resources and solutions for serving the church
and reaching the world.
Browse seriously!

Let’s Redefine Readiness
“Many [ministry] protégés who attend seminary as
their sole preparation end up stumbling around the
church upon graduation and battling confusion and
frustration. Why? Becaue they initially believe they’ve
been properly prepared, trained and equipped for the
demands ahead, but they soon realize it’s not true. In
actuality they were, more often than not, only given
information instead of personalized and intentional
development. We must join together to shift our
paradigms on what it looks like to train and develop
ministers, church planters, social entrepreneurs and
other spiritual leaders. Our current system does a
disservice to protégés when we tell them (or even
imply to them) that education is enough, or that it’s
the primary path. We all know life doesn’t happen in a
classroom—it happens far beyond those walls. And it’s
only outside those walls that a more holistic process of
leadership development is even possible.”—from Protégé
steve saccone is director of leadership development at The
Highway Community in the san Francisco Bay Area, where he
trains and develops emerging leaders, staff and volunteers.
He also founded and directed the Protégé Program, a global
leadership experience for future entrepreneurs, church
planters and spiritual leaders. He is the author of

Planning to Pray?
ivp: How is Pursuing God’s Will Together different than
other books on leadership?
Barton: This is a book for leaders and leadership groups
to read and experience together. not only does it help
leaders reflect on discerning and doing God’s will as the
heart of spiritual leadership, it offers them a step-by-step
process for becoming a community for discernment at
the leadership level along with an actual practice for
corporate discernment. This book is designed to be a
one-stop shop for leadership groups who want to shift
their approach to leadership from a model that relies
primarily on human decision-making and strategic
planning to an approach that is defined by the spiritual
practice of corporate discernment.
Ruth Haley barton is a spiritual director, teacher, author
and retreat leader trained at the shalem Institute for
spiritual Formation. she is cofounder and president
of The Transforming Center, a ministry to pastors and
Christian leaders. Among her books are Sacred Rhythms
and Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership.

The First Law of Church Planting
”Through much reflection, reading and many sleepless
nights, I’ve discovered that effective church planting
requires thinking about the culture of the congregation.
”More than a strategy, vision or plan, the unseen culture
of a church powerfully shapes its ability to grow, mature
and live missionally. . . . Like gravity, the culture of a
congregation can either pull people down to their base
instincts or lift people up to their sacred potential. We
create culture, and culture re-creates us.
”If we want to create a missional culture in the
congregations we serve, we need to understand how the
different elements of culture work. The language we live
in, the artifacts that we make use of, the rituals we engage
in, our approach to ethics, the institutions we are a part
of and the narratives we inhabit have the power to shape
our lives profoundly. In addition, we need to cultivate an
environment that fosters learning, healing, welcoming,
liberating and thriving. We do this by yielding to the work
of the spirit in our lives by developing communal rhythms
of life—grace-filled spiritual practices which engage our
senses, grab our hearts, form our identities and reshape
our desires toward God and his kingdom.”

Expanding on the biblical principles

customized, holistic development process that serves young and future ministry leaders. It is designed to shape their character, calling, mission, competencies and creative potential.
Over the course of this two-year journey, I come alongside protégés to help facilitate a personal, customized development plan for each of them. I seek to serve as a growth catalyst for their character formation, help them navigate the complexities of relational leadership and coach them in areas
of mission, team building and organizational leadership. I help them craft a unique learning experience that sharpens their communication and stretches their theology. I challenge them to become entrepreneurial leaders who know how to face failure as they
cultivate a life of initiative and risk. Real transformation and growth become a reality in their lives.
I realize that not everyone has access to the kind of customized, personal development that the Protégé Program offers, nor can most pause their entire life and enter a two-year leadership development program. so, I recently put the DnA of the Protégé Program inside a book—Protégé: Developing Your Next Generation of Church Leaders. This book can serve as a way to help pastors and ministry leaders codesign their own protégé journey no matter what age or experience levels they have. In addition, the book intends to help them gain insight into developing the next generation of leaders—protégés—around them.

The protégé path: cultivating a Leadership Development culture in Your church
As a young, aspiring ministry leader, I wondered what it would take to excel in the years ahead. My quest began with a calling and a vision. A plethora of questions drove my learning and curiosity, and immeasurable drive and passion fueled my quest. What I didn’t have initially, though, was a mentor to guide me in a personalized, customized way. I didn’t have someone who was willing to take the time necessary to guide, sharpen and motivate me to be who God uniquely designed me to be as I gained insight into the realities of ministry and leadership. Unfortunately, seminary doesn’t accomplish this kind of development either.
That’s the dilemma I believe many young leaders face. That’s the dilemma the church is staring in the face as we ponder how the next generation of leaders will be developed.
It’s going to take a culture change in the church. It’s going to take women and men who decide to intentionally build processes and systems and paths that facilitate transformational development. . . .
But there’s a huge gap in the church. My experience and research have repeatedly revealed that there is a significant gap between a protégé’s strong desire to grow as ministry leader and the ability to find a substantial mentor who knows how to offer a customized, personal and transformational investment. Herein lies the great dilemma in developing the next generation of leaders.
As I moved from being a protégé to being a mentor, my conviction to do something
about the gap grew deeper. As a result, in 2005 I initiated a leadership experiment called the Protégé Program, which is a

Bless This Mess
“I’ve never met anyone more gifted at or passionate
about creating authentic community than Heather
Zempel. That passion is evident both personally and
professionally. Her love for life is absolutely infectious.
so is her laugh! And this book is not just an expression
of what she knows. It’s an expression of who she is. By
the time you’re done reading, I think you’ll see why
Heather is so beloved by national Community Church.
“‘Community is messy.’ It sounds so straightforward.
And that much is universally understood. Why it’s messy
and how messiness actually creates the community and
what can be done to manage a community’s messiness
have always proven to be elusive. But Heather has the
guts to step into the mess, to dig around in it, and then
step back and find the beauty in it. You’ll never see
community the same way!”

Read It Like a Book
“A Bible publisher recently told me, ‘If you want to
ensure that someone will have a bad experience
reading a book, tell them to only read one page a
day.’ Whether it is a murder mystery, a romance novel
or a book on your favorite hobby, limiting yourself to
one page at a time will suck all the enjoyment from
reading. But this is what most of us do when reading
the Bible. We are used to reading one chapter at a
time, which amounts to just a page or two. In doing so,
we undermine our ability to get a feel for the drama
of the narrative and the inherent connectedness of
the various stories. I remember as a teenager staying
up late to read the last hundred pages of Gone with
the Wind because I was so caught up in the drama.
Why not read the Bible in the same way? set aside a
few hours to curl up with a cup of coffee and the book
of Revelation. If you read it straight through (as the
original audience would have listened to it), the depth
of struggle of God’s faithful witnesses and grandeur of
Christ’s ultimate triumph over evil will engulf you and
you will be moved to worship with the angels. In a ‘big
read’ of Revelation, all the confusion over signs, seals
and beasts fades away; Jesus, the lamb who was slain,
is magnified.”

why we read the Bible, what attitudes

you will find everything you need in this

Quiet!
You may or may not be aware of this, but InterVarsity Press is about as geeked out as an
organization can get over Bible study. Our very first homegrown book, back in 1947, was
Discovering the Gospel of Mark by Jane Hollingsworth, and we’ve pretty much never
stopped. Our commitment to being rooted in the scriptures gets expressed in overt ways,
as we publish commentaries like The Gospel of Matthew (Resonate), and in subtler ways
as we publish books for personal reflection and group discussion like The Story of God,
the Story of Us. The Bible problematizes everyday living and cultural issues in books like
The Cost of Community; it orients stories of spiritual growth and turbulence in books like
After Shock; it catalyzes social change in books like Reborn on the Fourth of July and Go
and Do. We even did two fortnights of reflections on donkeys in the Bible right here at
strangely Dim. so yeah, we like the Bible here.
We like it so much that we continue to publish new Bible studies, on topics and characters
and biblical books, every year, as part of our LifeGuide line and in other forms as part of
our IVP Connect imprint. And as if that weren’t enough, we like Bible study so much that
we give one away every day for free. A new Lifeguide study is posted daily at our Quiet
Time Bible study page; it gets you into a passage from scripture and, if I may
be cliche for a moment, it gets that passage from scripture into you.
so, if you’ve got a little time to kill and you feel like doing some
soul-searching and some Bible reading, find a quiet place
and give yourself a little “quiet time”—a quaint little term
meaning “time alone with God,” most often occupied
with prayer, meditation and (you guessed it) Bible
study. Before you know it, you’ll be as geeked out
about it as we are.

A New Approach to Bible Study
With the acquisition of Biblica Books in January 2012,
InterVarsity Press began publishing a new set of Bible studies,
called the Understanding the Books of the Bible series, written
by Christopher R. smith. This series takes a unique approach,
showing that the books of the Bible are real books and are
meant to be read as such—without using any chapter or verse
notations.
The Understanding the Books of the Bible series reinforces the
idea that the Bible is exciting and engaging and its books are
meant to be savored and experienced. Ideal for group study,
these invigorating Bible studies help readers to walk through the
Bible in a whole new way.
“The typical guide on the market smacks strongly of modernity,
encouraging people to scan the Bible for discrete bits of
information that can be rationally systematized,” says smith.
“The guides in the Understanding the Books of the Bible
series take an entirely different approach. They’re targeted
at postmodern young adults who will be turned off by a
presentation of the Bible as a collection of discrete statements
that are rules, propositions and doctrinal assertions, but who will
be attracted to the Bible as a treasury of stories, songs, dreams,
letters, poems and visions.”
The Rev. Dr. christopher R. smith (Ph.D., Boston College)
is an author and biblical scholar who lives in East Lansing,
Michigan. He served local churches for nearly twenty years in
Massachusetts, Ontario and Michigan and is now a volunteer
campus staff member with Graduate InterVarsity at Michigan
state University. He was a consulting editor for Biblica’s Books
of the Bible Bible.
Paul’s Prison Letters
In this new Understanding the Books of
the Bible guide, Christopher R. smith
walks groups through Paul’s final seven
letters (Colossians, Ephesians, Phile-
mon, Philippians, 1 Timothy, Titus,
2 Timothy), emphasizing the dramatic
context of Paul’s imprisonment through-
out. Each session sets aside artificial
chapter and verse divisions, letting
the natural outline of each letter
take shape.

The Biblical Imagination
For years Michael Card’s music has imaginatively
explored the narrative power of the Word of God.
now, in the Biblical Imagination series, Card invites
readers to enter into scripture as he does: at the
level of the imagination.
“I agree with those who would be cautious of
using the word imagination, for with an uninformed
imagination Jesus is merely a figment. But when the
imagination is surrendered along with the heart and
mind, it becomes a unifying bridge that opens the
Scriptures in new and exciting ways.”—from the preface to Mark: The Gospel of Passion
michael card is an award-winning musician and
performing artist. He earned a master’s degree in biblical
studies from Western Kentucky University under Dr.
William Lane. He is the author of Scribbling in the Sand, A
Better Freedom and Luke: The Gospel of Amazement.

The abiding value of bookstores
The theologian Klaus Bockmuehl once wrote that books are “God’s instruments in the history of salvation.” As a longtime bookseller in Bloomington, Indiana, before joining IVP in 1998, I clung to Bockmuehl’s thesis as I went about my front-line work putting books in the hands of readers. I believed wholeheartedly that he was right on target—that there is something of significant, transcendent value in ideas expressed carefully, artfully, in books.
I still do. In my travels representing InterVarsity Press, I continue
to find bookstores doing their work in light of that belief, and serving readers like you and publishers like IVP exceptionally well—bookstores like Hearts and Minds in Dallastown, Pennsylvania; Logos Bookstore in Dallas; and Eighth Day Books in Wichita, Kansas. They are shining examples of stores distinguishing themselves through the stocking and promoting of thoughtful books.
When Logos Bookstore opened in 1974, there were 25 Christian retail stores in Dallas. Today there are comparatively few, but the store in snider Plaza on the north side of the city still stands, still serves readers.
“Our establishing of a niche with a broader selection of books (than simply bestsellers) has helped us weather the storm,” said Rick Lewis, who with his wife, susan, owns and manages the store. “We do carry many of the bestselling titles—they help us generate the capital that enables us to carry the titles that I believe have a deeper impact, a more long-lasting impact.”
The familiar injunction from Matthew 6:33 (“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”) guides the work going on at Hearts and Minds Bookstore, owned and managed by Byron and Beth Borger.
The Borgers see their store’s mission embodying at least four key characteristics: serving the diversity of the church as a theological principle even more than as a business strategy; equipping students of local colleges in the integration of faith and learning; helping people integrate faith and vocation; and guiding men and women toward experiencing more of God through reading on the contemplative life.
“We carry the sorts of books that we think will be useful
for the vision we have of equipping the saints to live faithfully in every area of life,” Byron said. “We keep books on hand that aren’t as popular, but can help folks think through these significant areas of whole-life discipleship.”
Eighth Day Books, owned and managed by Warren Farha, has specialized in classic books across the disciplines of art, science, and the humanities since 1988, when the original store was opened in Wichita.
“From the beginning, we have not been a typical independent bookstore; we eschew the trendy, and do not carry books solely based on their salability,” Farha said of the store. “Instead, we’re selective, offering an eccentric community of books based on this organizing principle: if a book—be it literary, scientific, historical, or theological—sheds light on ultimate questions in an excellent way, then it’s a worthy candidate for inclusion in our catalog” or store.
These and many other stores across the country are doing significant work serving the breadth of the church and their communities with thoughtful Christian literature that can be an essential part of the awakening and deepening and enlarging of the faith of men and women they come in contact with.

“The best disciplers I’ve had through the years have been authors,” Rick Lewis said. “Having read these books enables me to sell them. I can say that George MacDonald deepened my love for God. Reading Henri nouwen helped me grow in compassion. C. s. Lewis and John stott sharpened my thinking. Richard Foster encouraged me in the disciplines. The storytelling of Walter Wangerin, stephen Lawhead and Madeleine L’Engle improved my imagination and aided my wonder. Brennan Manning told me God loves me, as I am. I cannot not tell others about them.”
If you have a bookseller like this in your area, we encourage you to support them and their work. We’ll all be better off, when you do.

Mentoring the Mostly Grown
“Whether in the desperate slums of Kampala or the affluent
neighborhoods of Chicago’s suburbs or the overcrowded
streets of Saigon, we stand amazed at the passion with
which emerging adults are pursuing radical Christ-centered,
kingdom-based visions for change. And, in every country
and culture, the key factor that determines whether young
adults are thriving or simply surviving is always the same: the
availability and accessibility of teachers, coaches, pastors,
friends and mentors who are committed to investing in their
spiritual vitality.”—from the introduction to Shaping the Journey of Emerging Adults
Richard R. Dunn is lead pastor at Fellowship Evangelical Free
Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the author of Shaping the
Spiritual Life of Students.

Trinity International University and serves on the leadership core of

Rick Dunn and Jana sundene offer
guidance for those who mentor twenty-
somethings. With information on the
new challenges of emerging adulthood,
the authors call mentors to forgo cur-
riculums in favor of a decision to walk
alongside emerging adults into the
hope and purpose of the Christlife.
“It is a fact that today’s emerg-ing twentysomethings face challenges never imagined by their parents. Discipling them has never been more urgent. . . . Jana and Rick offer a way beyond fads into the depths of life in Christ for young adults. If we the church would face the future, we must read this book.”—David Fitch, B. R. ivp: Why did you decide to write Invitations from God?
calhoun: I have watched over-optioned people struggle
with their choices. so many good things to choose
from, so little time.We want to say yes to everything. As
I witnessed the toll of our yeses in craziness and soul-
depleted lives I wanted to say, “It doesn’t have to be
like this. You can say yes to God’s invitations and find an
antidote to the craziness.”
ivp: The subtitle is Accepting God’s Offer to Rest, Weep,
Forgive, Wait, Remember and More. What difference
does it make when we say yes to these invitations from
God?
calhoun: God’s invitations slow us down, unmask our
idols, root us in reality, deepen our ability to care for
others, transforming us into men and women of character.
. . . I believe the church and Christ-followers don’t have to
look like our culture. We can be the breath of fresh air, the
place of freedom and depth and change for the better.

Celebrating the Return of a Classic
Learning to hear God’s voice and develop a richer
relationship with him has long been a desire of God’s
people. More than a decade ago, InterVarsity Press
released Hearing God, in which Dallas Willard, one
of today’s most influential spiritual leaders, presented
his model for the Christian life as “a hand-in-hand,
conversational walk with God.”
now, inspired by new material from Willard’s provocative
teaching at the Renovaré Institute, this expanded edition
provides deeper, more comprehensive insight into God’s
direction for daily life. Willard invites his readers to move
beyond communication with God to companionship with
God and enter into the richness of the Way of Jesus.
Reformatted for easier reading, Hearing God includes six
new scripture meditations as well as subject and scripture
indexes to bring readers fresh insight in their journey
of hearing God. “Hearing God is but one dimension of
a richly interactive relationship,” Willard writes, “and
obtaining guidance is but one facet of hearing God.”
He places divine guidance in the context of Christian
discipleship. In other words, hearing God becomes far
more an issue of being the kind of person God calls us to
be, not merely doing what he wants us to do.
Dallas Willard is professor of philosophy at the University
of southern California. He is the author of The Divine
Conspiracy, The Spirit of the Disciplines and Renovation
of the Heart.

A Curriculum in Christlikeness
James Bryan smith’s Apprentice series is a spiritual formation
curriculum that has already brought transformation to numerous
individuals and congregations. The books aim at a total
revitalization of discipleship among believers by coming to terms
with who God is, what it means to live as a Christian and what it

that I do in ministry. I have never used any other tool that is as
helpful to people in different stages of their maturity.”

Foxhole Theology
ivp: How do you approach the difficult topic of war
and faith?
Mehl-laituri: Instead of theology from the sidelines, my
approach is necessarily one that is heavily invested in the
nitty-gritty reality of combat. I try to be honest about the
tragedy in war, but also the beauty we catch glimpses of
therein and the hope that we find in Jesus. I insist that to
deal holistically with war, we must not abstract it from the
lived experience thereof. The most important way to learn
about war is to hear real accounts of it, accounts that may
very well be grotesque. Only after we grapple tangibly
and viscerally with the reality of war will we be able to
take comfort in the fact that Jesus has saved us, that
war is in fact over, if we’ll have it. In short, my purpose
is to describe the rebirth that occurred in one soldier’s
life and what is possible in the lives of others, soldiers or
otherwise. The military is one way in which to understand
the great and abiding joy made possible by the horrific
and obscene reality of the cross.
Logan mehl-Laituri is an army veteran who speaks
and writes broadly about veterans issues and Christian
perspectives on militarism and nationalism. He served in
the Iraq War as a forward observer/fire support specialist
before applying to change his status to conscientious
objector. After his discharge he went to Palestine with

Why Ivp values multiethnicity
We at IVP sometimes describe ourselves as a “multiethnic” publisher. What do we mean by that? It simply means that we aim for our books and authors to reflect the diversity of the global church, in all its myriad variety and vitality.
The Greek word ethne is often translated as “nations” or more properly understood now as “people groups.” Jesus’ Great Commission exhorts us to go into all the world and preach the gospel to all ethne. since the day of Pentecost, the church has been a multiethnic body of believers from across ethnic backgrounds and cultures. This is a key dimension of our identity as the church, and it will be so for eternity. Revelation 7 tells us that the great multitude will consist of people from every tribe and every tongue. The more the church embodies this ultimate reality, the more prophetic and powerful our witness becomes. As John stott put it, “We must be global Christians with a global vision because our God is a global God.”
That means that the body of Christ consists of nigerians and norwegians, Americans and Australians, Brazilians and Koreans. All of us bring our distinct cultural identities and ethnic backgrounds to who we are as Christians. As Paul puts it in 1 Corinthians 12, all of us need one another for the body to function. The eye cannot say to the hand, I don’t need you. The American church cannot say to the Chinese church, I don’t need you.
so we at IVP have been intentional about publishing authors from various ethnic backgrounds and cultural locations. some of our books focus on the specific experiences of particular ethnic groups, such as
Being Latino in Christ by Orlando Crespo, Following Jesus Without Dishonoring Your Parents by a team
of Asian American authors, or Being White by Paula Harris and Doug schaupp. Other
books explore the implications of globalization and ethnic diversity
for the north American church as a whole, such as The Next Evangelicalism by soong-Chan Rah, Multicultural Ministry Handbook edited by David Anderson and Margaret Cabellon or A Future for the Latino Church
by Daniel Rodriguez.Race and ethnicity have
been particularly affected by the brokenness of the Fall,
as evidenced by the world’s long history of racial injustice, ethnic cleansing,
slavery and genocide. Thus we address the need for reconciliation and healing across racial and ethnic lines through books such as The Heart of Racial Justice by Brenda salter Mcneil and Rick Richardson. We also intentionally publish resources that help readers cross cultures well, with books such as Cross-Cultural Partnerships by Mary Lederleitner or Leading Across Cultures by Jim Plueddemann.
As we move further into a more globally interconnected era, multiethnicity is simply becoming the new normal. so don’t be surprised to see more books like Real Life by James Choung, The Mission of Worship by sandra Van Opstal, Partnering with the Global Church by nikki Toyama-szeto and Femi Adeleye or Making All Things New by York Moore. These are the voices of our multiethnic Christian community, and we all need to hear from one another if we are to serve and minister effectively in a diverse world.
the more the church
embodies this ultimate
reality, the more prophetic and powerful
our witness becomes.

Ivp acquires biblica books
westMont, il—InterVarsity Press (IVP), a leading publisher of thoughtful Christian books, is pleased to announce that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Biblica Books, the book-publishing arm of Biblica Worldwide. In the acquisition, which is expected to close by the end of the calendar year, IVP will obtain 170 current and nearly 30 new Biblica Books titles. This includes Operation World, the definitive global prayer guide that’s now in its seventh edition.
The acquisition agreement between IVP and Biblica was made possible when Biblica recently made a strategic decision to narrow its focus solely to the Bible. A search for the right strategic partner with which to place their book-publishing portfolio led them to IVP.
“The addition of Biblica Books is a significant strategy for IVP. This will help us further serve and equip the church in its witness of grace and truth in the world,” says Bob Fryling, publisher of InterVarsity Press. “With this acquisition, IVP becomes an even stronger publisher for biblical and missions-oriented resources. We are grateful for this expansion opportunity.”
The two publishers readily agreed that IVP is in a very strong position to effectively carry forward the vision of Biblica Books. Through its missions-focused publishing program and networks such as the Urbana student Missions Conferences plus its broad reach in both trade and academic markets, IVP will now be publishing an even greater selection of books to help Christians throughout the church better fulfill their kingdom calling.
scott Bolinder, president of global publishing for Biblica, says that “there could not be a better fit for our authors and their wonderful content that makes up our unique book-publishing portfolio. The mission of IVP and Biblica resonates deeply with seeing lives around the world transformed through the Bible and biblical resources. We are delighted with the outcome of this transition and the potential
to continue working closely as partners in global ministry.”
In tandem with the acquisition Biblica Books, IVP is pleased to announce the launch of the Missional Mind enewsletter, which gives you all the latest from the missions community including insights into conferences, authors, books and trends. sign up today at ivpress.com/newsletters!

A Game Plan for World Evangelization
“Patrick is an evangelical optimist who writes ‘in the face of a
prevailing pessimism and creeping universalism.’ He combines
the synthesizing mind of an analyst with the passionate heart of
an evangelist. . . .
“For me (and I suspect for many others) chapter 7 is Patrick’s
most distinctive and helpful, for it is here that he more fully
unpacks the paradigm (he introduced years ago) in which he
presents the world’s array of people groups within 15 Affinity
Blocs and approximately 250 People Clusters; these are not
mere categories of convenience, but a genuine attempt both
to reflect field realities and to highlight ethnic connections
conducive to mission partnerships and missiological creativity.
Patrick’s commendable emphasis on least-evangelized countries
and least-reached peoples . . . is counterbalanced by his deep
consistent concern for the re-evangelization of Europe and the
strengthening of evangelical foundations in the West. . . .
“I am delighted that Patrick’s legacy now includes . . . a carefully
conceived and beautifully presented ‘game plan’ for world
evangelization.”

Clearing the Air
“The point of view of this book is nondenominational—or, more accurately, superdenominational. Few will agree with everything in it. I invite you, whatever your viewpoint, to a discussion of what Christianity really is. I present the evidence as clearly and openly as possible. If you are a non-Christian, you are invited to investigate. If you are a Christian, recall that no one ever served Jesus by suppressing the truth. If you are anti-Christian, here is an opportunity to sort fact from fiction. The goal is to dispel myths and promote reasonable understanding of the subject. Welcome all.”—from the introduction to Exposing Myths About Christianity

An Unlikely Call to Worship
Ivp: Can you give an example of how science
affirms a creator?
giberson: The big bang theory has been strongly
criticized by some Christians as being an atheistic
alternative to the Genesis statement “In the beginning
God created the heavens and the earth.” The big bang
theory, originally proposed by a Christian physicist, was
criticized for being a scientific restatement of the first
verse in Genesis. The atheistic view at the time was that
the universe was eternal. An eternal universe does not
need a God to get it going, of course. If the universe
had a real beginning, which the big bang says it does,
that creates a need for some explanation for how things
got started. And this, of course, opens the door to the
possibility that God caused the big bang. The big bang
invites theological speculation; it does not close it off.

The Wonder of the Universe
If we, like the great scientists of the
past, agree to follow the physical
evidence wherever it leads, will there
be room left for wonder? Through this
guided tour of planets and protons,
galaxies and gamma rays, Karl Giberson
gives us a window into the universe re-
vealed by contemporary science. Most
will find it difficult to suppress the sense
of a great plan at work—a fine-tuned
world provoking thoughts of a creator.

Praise for A Week in the Life of Corinth
“If you want to know what it would have been like to live in ancient Corinth, spend a week in the life of a freedman, traverse the olive groves and cobblestone streets, survive the cutthroat politics of a Greek city, encounter pagan priestesses and converse with a Jewish tentmaker named ‘Paulos,’ then Ben Witherington has written the book for you. This short novella, with pictures and explanations of customs . . . brings to us the sights, smells, sounds and culture of Corinth as the apostle Paul knew it.”
—michael F. bird, Crossway College, Australia
“I know of no other introduction to the Greco-Roman environment of Paul’s mission that could also qualify as entertaining ‘beach reading.’”
—David a. desilva, Ashland Theological seminary
ben Witherington III (Ph.D., University of Durham, England) is
professor of new Testament at Asbury Theological seminary in
Wilmore, Kentucky. He is the author of many books on the new
Testament, including Women and the Genesis of Christianity
and The Paul Quest. He is coauthor (with Hershel shanks) of
The Brother of Jesus, a book on the controversial James ossuary.

A Week in the Life of Corinth
Ben Witherington III attempts to reen-
chant our reading of Paul in this creative
reconstruction of ancient Corinth.
Following a fictitious Corinthian man
named nicanor through an eventful
week of business dealings and conflict,
readers encounter life at various levels
of Roman society—eventually meeting
Paul himself and gaining entrance into
the Christian community there. The
result is an unforgettable introduction
to life in a major center of the new
Testament world.

the ivp BiBle dictionary set
Unique among reference books on the Bible, the volumes of The IVP Bible Dictionary series bridge the gap between scholars and those pastors, teachers, students and laypeople desiring in-depth treatment of select topics in an accessible and summary format. nEw! dictionary oF the

“The strength of this and the other volumes in the series is that, while they provide important introductory material, they also offer the reader a remarkable depth that allows a mature and nuanced understanding of the subject matter, thereby surpassing other dictionaries, surveys and even commentaries. Every pastor and scholar should not only add this to their library but should keep it ready to hand for constant use.”—John Walton, professor of Old Testament, Wheaton College

readers who wish to use the index. As any author (or editor) can tell you, indexing is hard, mind-numbing work. In the midst of it I wondered, Why do this? After all, many readers will be purchasing a digital version of this dictionary and will have the advantage of a digital search of the entire text (and more).
At that point, do you know what motivates me? Most readers don’t know what is in this book! They are limited in their search by what they don’t know they don’t know. Experienced readers learn that an index is not just a means of looking up something you thought of. It is also a way of exploring what the book has to
offer. Like the table of contents, it is another aperture into the mind of the author and the content of the book. Particularly if the author created the index. And this is why (for single-authored works in particular) I’m a proponent of author-created indexes. It’s their final opportunity to open up the book to their readers. The author is
able to make connections that others are not.A couple days after I announced to my Facebook
friends that I’d completed indexing the dictionary, an OT scholar friend chimed in to announce that he’d completed the hard work of indexing his latest (little 500-page) commentary. He wondered why he did it. Is he a control freak? Maybe. But if so, in this case it’s a great benefit to readers. He’s pointed them to things they didn’t know they wanted to know.
Like in my case it’s “Mischwesen, 29-30, 33-34.” You don’t know what that is? Well, you need to look it up! You can do that in a couple of months.

Indexed Thoughts
Earlier this week I created a subject index for our Dictionary of the Old Testament: Prophets, which goes to the printer this week. This is probably the tenth time I’ve done this kind of job on a dictionary of one sort or another. needless to say, it is not my favorite task, and perhaps I should have someone else do it. Only it needs to be done very quickly. I clear the decks for two or three days and work steadily, day and night, until it is done. But before I arrive at this critical juncture, I’ve already done quite a bit of prep work in setting out the topics and the words that feed into them. But why should I be the one to do this?
Well, I am just about the only person who has a fresh and comprehensive grasp of what’s to be found in the 660,000 words—and is committed to getting the job done in the shortest amount of time. Plus, as I said, I’ve got experience! But the most important thing is my familiarity with the content. Over the four-year period of developing this project, and particularly during the final months of reading and cross-referencing articles, I’ve wired a network of connections in my head. Once we have the pagination finalized, I set loose some digital help in coming up with the page numbers. Then I clean it up by bringing some more human intelligence to the mass of data.
In fact, I take some radical measures—like throwing God out of the index. (Do you know how many pages are fetched up with God?) Then, seized by conscience, I reintroduce God with some handpicked pages that might offer maximal reward. And there are other compromises, like the prophetic books themselves. I dump the results of the blind fanaticism of the computer and then select the page ranges where each book is discussed in major articles. There is, after all, a computer-generated scripture index—and it captures everything in its machine-driven madness.
Due primarily to the time crunch, and some other factors too, this is not a refined index, all tricked out with subcategories and so forth. But I figure whatever I can do within the limited time is going to be a gift to

“Part of what we are doing when we read Scripture with the fathers is expanding our cultural vision, the metaphors through which we can understand the Scripture text. We are also see-ing the text more according to its wholeness . . . according to the wholeness of the truth of the Christian faith and of Scripture.”—Thomas c. Oden, series editor, ACCs
“Contemporary Christians would do well to draw the hermeneu-tical circle broadly enough to include . . . the voices to be found in the Ancient Christian Commentary series. This is an excellent sermon-preparation resource for pastors.”—Christian Century
