What is an internship?• An approved and supervised work experience that meets

specific student learning goals related to an academic field of study and supports their professional objectives

• Benefits:• Determine if your field/career is a good fit

• Real world application of what you’ve learned

• Network (i.e. letters of recommendation, job references)

• Build up your resume!

Credit vs. Non-credit Internships

Credit Internships

Students must be registered in an internship course or an independent study course*(i.e. HD 495, SOC 494/495, COMM 495, VSAR 495, etc.)

o Professor may limit sites to a specific list

o Minimum of hours vary depending on major

o Graded depending on major department (can be credit/no credit, or letter grade)

*Not offered by all departments

Non-Credit Internships

o Students do not receive academic credit

o No course enrollment

Same benefits as credit internships when it comes to gaining experience/adding value to resume

What is not an internship?

• Assisting at a family member’s business

• Cold-calling, door to door sales, recruiting clients

• Running errands (i.e. coffee/dry-cleaning)

• Keep clerical work to a minimum

Getting started: Start Early

• Sites may ask for: cover letter/ resume submission, interview, background checks, TB test, etc.

– Health screenings (TB test) are available at the Student Health & Counseling Services

– LiveScan available at University Campus Police

• Refer to the FAQs section and the Student Intern Handbook on our website for more tips and suggestions.

Navigating the Database

– Sites: Search for specific organizations

– Opportunity: Specific internship opportunities (including paid!)

– Keywords: majors, social issues, industry type, age range (i.e. children/youth, adolescents/teens, seniors/elders), types of service, etc.

Applying for an Internship

• Communicate clearly:

– Identify yourself as a CSUSM student/ your major & career goals.

– Explain why you are interested in the position and why you are a qualified candidate.

• Resume and cover letter assistance available at the career center (Craven Hall 1400)

Consult with internship course instructor and contact the requested community partner.

Submit an online “Request Community Partner” form

The Office of Internships will communicate with the site to ensure it meets academic and safety policies

-During this time, make your placement in the “Pending approval site” on the database & keep in touch with the Community Partner

Community Partner signs agreement

• Site is added to the database• We will contact you and let

you complete your placement and signing the University Liability Waiver form

Community Partner declines agreement

• Student can still participate by signing the University Liability Waiver form

Resources for Graduating Students

If you are a graduating senior, check out the Career Center’s Alumni Services website:

alumni/All services are available to you for 3-months after graduation.

After the 3-month period, you can continue to receive services by: 1) becoming a member of the CSUSM Alumni Association; or 2) opt for fee-based services.
