ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Internship is the integral and basic requirement of all the engineering programs. Because it is

the practical implementation of the theoretical knowledge which we have taught in our engineering

subjects to gain further knowledge and experience about professional activities. It equips us with the

necessary knowledge, skills and values of engineering field which are basic requirement of the

engineering professional and which also helps new graduates to perform professionally as they get first

step in their practical professional life.

The internship opportunity I had with Atlas Battery limited was a great chance for learning and

professional development. Therefore, I consider myself as a very lucky individual as I was provided with

an opportunity to be a part of it. I am also grateful for having a chance to meet so many wonderful people

and professionals who led me though this internship period.

Bearing in mind previous I am using this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and special

thanks to the GM of Atlas Battery (Information Technology) Mr. Quasim Imran who in spite of being

extraordinarily busy with his duties, took time out to hear, guide and keep me on the correct path and

allowing me to carry out my project at their esteemed organization and extending during the training.

I express my deepest thanks to Mr. Asher, Manager in Information Systems and Mr. Imtaiz

Askari (Manager Systems) for taking part in useful decision & giving necessary advices and

guidance and arranged all facilities to make life easier. I choose this moment to acknowledge his/her

INTRODUCTION:

An internship is a trained and supervised experience in a professional setting in which the student

is learning and gaining essential experience and expertise. Internship is meant for introducing candidates

either full-time or part-time to a real world experience related to their career goals and interests. It may,

but does not have to be related connected to one's academic major or minor. Internships can be done

during the academic semester and or summer depending upon the spaced out curriculum. There are

several varieties of internship: some are paid some are not and some offer credit towards graduation.

Internship is an excellent way to build those all important connections that are invaluable in developing

and maintaining a strong professional network for the future. Internships provide real world experience to

those looking to explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skill required to enter into a particular career

field.

OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP

The main objective of the internship course is to facilitate reflection on experiences obtained in the

internship and to enhance understanding of academic material by application in the internship setting.

Internships will provide students the opportunity to test their interest in a particular career before

permanent commitment is made. Apart from it is more important because: I. Internship will help the trainees to develop skills and techniques directly applicable to their careers.

2. Internship will provide students the opportunity to develop attitudes conducive to effective interpersonal relationship.

3. Internship will provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the formal functional activities of a participating organization.

4. Internship programs will enhance advancement possibilities of graduates.

5. Internship students will develop employment records or reference that will enhance employment opportunities.

PURPOSE OF INTERNSHIP IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY:

1- The main purpose for doing internship in IT because I decided to set my career goals in IT. 2- To get the experience that how an organization manages its work loads. 3- To get the knowledge about the hierarchy in the organization.

ABOUT CHAIRMAN:

Mr. Yousuf H.Sherazi

Mr. Shirazi is a Law graduate (LLB) with BA (Hons) and JD (Diploma in Journalism) from

Punjab University and AMP Harvard. He served in the financial services of the Central Superior

Services of Pakistan for eight years. He is the author of five books including "Aid or Trade"

adjudged by the Writers Guild as the best book of the year and continues to be a columnist,

particularly on economy. Mr. Shirazi is the Chairman of Atlas Group, which, among others, has

joint ventures with Honda, GS Yuasa and MAN to name a few. He has been the President of

Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry for two terms. He has been the founder member of

Karachi Stock Exchange, Lahore Stock Exchange and International Chamber of Commerce and

Industry. He has been on the Board of Harvard Business School Alumni Association and is the

Founder President of Harvard Club of Pakistan and Harvard Business School Club of Pakistan. He

has been a visiting faculty member at National Defense University, Navy War College and

HISTORY:

Atlas Battery Limited (ABL) was incorporated in 1966 through a Technical Collaboration with

Japan Storage Battery Company Limited (JSB), Japan and later entered a Joint Venture Agreement in 1987.

JSB and Yuasa Corporation, Japan merged in 2004. The merged entity GS Yuasa Corporation is a leading

global battery manufacturer. ABL manufactures a complete range of lead acid batteries for cars,

motorcycles, trucks, tractors, heavy vehicles, construction and road-building equipments, as well as host

of stationary batteries. In recent years, the shortage of electricity has spurred the demand of UPS systems.

ABL has developed batteries for UPS systems, which are customers’ first choice due to their quality,

reliability and durability. The Company has always been at the vanguard of development. The AGS brand

2. OSI MODEL LAYERS SEVEN LAYERS OF OSI MODEL:

Open Systems Interconnection Basic Reference Model (OSI Reference Model or OSI

Model) is an abstract description for layered communications and computer network protocol

design. It was developed as part of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) initiative. In its

most basic form, it divides network architecture into seven layers which, from top to bottom,

are the Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data-Link, and Physical Layers.

It is therefore often referred to as the OSI Seven Layer Model.

LAYER 1 (PHYSICAL LAYER):

The physical layer has the following major functions:

It defines the electrical and physical specifications of the data connection. It defines the

relationship between a device and a physical transmission medium (e.g., a copper or fiber

optical cable). This includes the layout of pins, voltages, line impedance, cable

specifications, signal timing, hubs, repeaters, network adapters, host bus adapters (HBA

used in storage area networks) and more.

It defines the protocol to establish and terminate a connection between two directly connected nodes over a communications medium.

It may define the protocol for flow control.

It defines transmission mode i.e. simplex, half duplex, full duplex.

LAYER 2 (DATA LINK LAYER):

The data link layer provides node-to-node data transfer -- a reliable link between two directly connected nodes, by detecting and possibly correcting errors that may occur in the physical layer.

LAYER 3 (NETWORK LAYER):

The network layer provides the functional and procedural means of transferring variable length

data sequences (called datagram) from one node to another connected to the same network. It

translates logical network address into physical machine address. A network is a medium to which many

nodes can be connected, on which every node has an address and which permits nodes connected to it

to transfer messages to other nodes connected to it by merely providing the content of a message and

the address of the destination node and letting the network find the way to deliver ("route") the message

to the destination node. In addition to message routing, the network may (or may not) implement

message delivery by splitting the message into several fragments, delivering each fragment by a

separate route and reassembling the fragments, report delivery errors, etc.

LAYER 4 (TRANSFORT LAYER):

A transport layer provides end-to-end or host-to-host communication services for applications

within a layered architecture of network components and protocols. [1]

INTERNSHIP REPORT services such as oriented data support, reliability, flow control, and multiplexing. Transport layer

implementations are contained in both the model which is the foundation of the Internet, and the

Open Systems Interconnection(OSI) model of general networking, however, the definitions of details of

the transport layer are different in these models. In the Open Systems Interconnection model the

transport layer is most often referred to as Layer 4 or L4.

LAYER 5 (SESSION LAYER):

The session layer controls the dialogues (connections) between computers. It

establishes, manages and terminates the connections between the local and remote

application. It provides for full-duplex, half-duplex, or simplex operation, and establishes

check pointing, adjournment, termination, and restart procedures. The OSI model made this

layer responsible for graceful close of sessions, which is a property of the Transmission

Control Protocol, and also for session check pointing and recovery, which is not usually used in

the Internet Protocol Suite. The session layer is commonly implemented explicitly in application

environments that use remote procedure calls.

LAYER 6 (PRESENTATION LAYER):

The presentation layer establishes context between application-layer entities, in which the

application-layer entities may use different syntax and semantics if the presentation service

provides a big mapping between them. If a mapping is available, presentation service data units

are encapsulated into session protocol data units, and passed down the protocol stack.

LAYER 7 (APPLICATION LAYER):

The application layer is the OSI layer closest to the end user, which means both the OSI

application layer and the user interact directly with the software application. This layer interacts

with software applications that implement a communicating component. Such application

programs fall outside the scope of the OSI model. Application-layer functions typically include

identifying communication partners, determining resource availability, and synchronizing

communication. When identifying communication partners, the application layer determines the

identity and availability of communication partners for an application with data to transmit. When

determining resource availability, the application layer must decide whether sufficient network or

between applications requires cooperation that is managed by the application layer. Some examples of application-layer implementations include:

3. ROUTERS AND SWITCHES ROUTER:

A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. A

router is connected to two or more data lines from different networks (as opposed to a network

switch, which connects data lines from one single network). When a data packet comes in on one

of the lines, the router reads the address information in the packet to determine its ultimate

destination. Then, using information in its routing table or routing policy, it directs the packet to

the next network on its journey. This creates an overlay internetwork. Routers perform the "traffic

directing" functions on the Internet. A data packet is typically forwarded from one router to another

through the networks that constitute the internetwork until it reaches its destination node. Organization Development through Self Development Page 14

SWITCH:

A network switch (also called switching hub, bridging hub, officially MAC bridge [1]

) is a

computer networking device that connects devices together on a computer network, by using packet

switching to receive, process and forward data to the destination device. Unlike less advanced

network hubs, a network switch forwards data only to one or multiple devices that need to receive it,

rather than broadcasting the same data out of each of its ports. [2]

A network switch is a multiport network bridge that uses hardware addresses to process and

forward data at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model. Switches can also process data at the

network layer (layer 3) by additionally incorporating routing functionality that most commonly uses

IP addresses to perform packet forwarding; such switches are commonly known as layer-3 switches

or multilayer switches.

ROUTING:

Routing is the process of selecting best paths in a network. In the past, the term routing

was also used to mean forwarding network traffic among networks. However this latter function

is much better described as simply forwarding. Routing is performed for many kinds of

networks, including the telephone network (circuit switching), electronic data networks (such

as the Internet), and transportation networks. This article is concerned primarily with routing in

electronic data networks using packet switching technology. Organization Development through Self Development Page 15

In packet switching networks, routing directs packet forwarding (the transit of logically

addressed network packets from their source toward their ultimate destination) through

intermediate nodes. Intermediate nodes are typically network hardware devices such as routers,

bridges, gateways, firewalls, or switches. General-purpose computers can also forward packets

and perform routing, though they are not specialized hardware and may suffer from limited

performance. The routing process usually directs forwarding on the basis of routing tables

which maintain a record of the routes to various network destinations. Thus, constructing

routing tables, which are held in the router's memory, is very important for efficient routing.

Most routing algorithms use only one network path at a time. Multipath routing techniques

enable the use of multiple alternative paths.

WHAT IS DATA CENTRE?

A data center is a centralized repository, either physical or virtual, for the storage, management,

and dissemination of data and information organized around a particular body of knowledge or

pertaining to a particular business.

PURPOSE OF DATACENTRE:

As more and more companies shift from individual servers to networked systems, they are

realizing that the original benefit of running their own server room is being outweighed by the advantages

of a datacenters. Many companies do not realize that you can save money and have greater resilience in

a data center.

ATLAS BATTERY DATA CENTRE:

Atlas Battery (Karachi) provides all the IT facilities and solutions to all over Pakistan (Atlas Battery).

This datacenter consist of:

2server racks.

1 communication rack. 1 CCTV and PABX rack. 1 UPS rack.

All the powers provided to the user’s system through UPS (Universal Power Supply).

WHAT ARE STP CABLES?

Often abbreviated STP, a type of copper telephone wiring in which each of the two copper wires

that are twisted together are coated with an insulating coating that functions as a ground for the wires.

The extra covering in shielded twisted pair wiring protects the transmission line from electromagnetic

interference leaking into or out of the cable. STP cabling often is used in Ethernet networks, especially

fast data rate Ethernets.

All the installation and implementation of networks in Atlas Battery is based on STP

STANDARDS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF SYSTEM:

To maintain a new system in organization we must follow the standards set by that

department. In atlas Battery IT department sets some standards about the installation of a PC in

WHAT IS SYSTEM IMAGE (BACKUP):

Applies to Windows 7

A system image is an exact copy of a drive. By default, a system image includes the drives

required for Windows to run. It also includes Windows and your system settings, programs, and

files. You can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or

computer ever stops working. When you restore your computer from a system image, it's a

complete restoration—you can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your current

programs, system settings, and files are replaced with the contents of the system image.

You can create a system image, which contains a copy of Windows and copies of your

programs, system settings, and files. The system image is then stored in a separate location

from the original programs, settings, and files. You can use this image to restore the contents of

your computer if your hard disk or entire computer ever stops working.

If you're using Windows Backup to back up your files, you can have a system image

created each time your files are backed up. The files can be saved on a USB flash drive, CDs,

DVDs, or a hard drive. The system image must be saved on a hard drive. By default, the system

Standard Operating Procedures

An SOP is a procedure specific to your operation that describes the activities necessary

to complete tasks in accordance with industry regulations, provincial laws or even just your own standards for running your business. Any document that is a “how to” falls into the category of procedures

Initiating a SOP

As implied above, the initiative and further procedure for the preparation, implementation and

management of the documents is a procedure in itself which should be described. These SOPs should at least mention:

who can or should make which type of SOP; to whom proposals for a SOP should be submitted, and who adjudges the draft; the procedure of approval; who decides on the date of implementation, and who should be informed; How revisions can be made or how a SOP can be withdrawn.

Preparation of SOPs

The make-up of the documents should meet a minimum number of requirements:

Each page should have a heading and/or footing mentioning:

Date of approval and/or version number; A unique title (abbreviated if desired); The number of the SOP (preferably with category); Page number and total number of pages of the SOP.

The heading (or only the logo) of originals should preferably be printed in another colour than

What Is Procuring To Pay Cycle? What are the steps of purchasing an inventory using P2P cycle?

Atlas Battery Limited is based on the ERP of ORACLE database management system. During

the session of first database lecture Mr. Ali Shahab Told that this ERP is implemented by ORACLE.

Atlas Battery overall consist of 2 data centers situated at Admin Block and SIL (Sherazi Investment

Limited). He further describe that there is lot of scope of ERP in Pakistan or especially in Middle East.

The person must show his interest and efforts in his learning process than he/she get the

better opportunity in the future. We further discuss the career opportunities related to databases and

management fields.

Throughout it was the well experienced and knowledgeable day. Below is the

ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING:

WHAT IS ERP?

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a planning philosophy enabled with software that attempts to integrate all the business processes of different departments and functions across a company onto a single computer system that can serve particular needs of the different departments.

Typically, before ERP implementation, each department has its own computer system

optimized for the requirement that a department needs. Each department will maintain separate databases and design applications as per their functionalities. These will result in local optima and overall very poor results across all the departments or within the company.

SCOPE OF ERP:

ERP combines all the business requirements of the company together into a single, integrated software program that runs off a single database so that the various departments can more easily share information and communicate with each other. Conceptually ERP replaces the old standalone computer system in finance, HR, manufacturing, etc., with a single software program that facilitates various functional modules.

Thus everybody from the finance, manufacturing, purchasing etc will get their own

advantages of software, along with the added feature of availability of information across other departments to improve decision quality. For example, someone in finance can use ERP to see if any sale order has been shipped from the warehouse so that he can now confidently plan for working capital management for the next period.

With the advent of Web-based ERP solution working environment started witnessing a

tremendous change. Web-based simplified back-office process automation for mid-sized and growing business. It provided real-time information about finance, order management, purchase, inventory, employee management, e-commerce and much more. With web-based ERP solution, you can accelerate business cycles, improve productivity and reliability, and provide higher levels of service to customers, suppliers and partners. Procure to pay process which is also known as P2P cycle is followed by any organization in any

ERP system if they would like purchase any products (it could raw materials, office supplies,

infrastructure etc). Of course when there is a purchase there should be a payment. This entire

process of purchasing a product and making payment for that product to supplier is called procure to

pay process.

Create Requisition:

Requisition is nothing but a formal request to buy something (like Inventory material, office supplies etc) needed for the enterprise. Only an employee can create one. There are two types of requisitions:

Internal Requisition

Purchase requisition

Create Purchase Order:

A Standard PO is created for one–time purchase of various items

Create Receipt:

Create a receipt to receive the items in the Purchase Order.

Create Invoice in Payables:

Once the goods are received, it’s time to pay the vendor for the goods purchased and

hence the invoices are created.

Making a Payment:

Go to the Invoice window and query the invoice you want to pay. You would see Amount

paid as 0.00 before you make a payment.

Transfer to General Ledger:

A general ledger is a complete record of financial transactions over the life of a

company. The ledger holds account information that is needed to prepare financial statements, and includes accounts for assets, liabilities, owners' equity, revenues and expenses.

A Purchase order is a commercial document and first official order issued by the buyer to the

supplier, indicating types, quantities, and agreed prices for products or services the supplier will provide

to the buyer. Basically, there are four types of Purchase Orders,

Status represents the status of the document. Incomplete is the default status for all purchase

orders until they are submitted for the first time for approval. Click Shipments button.

Shipment number, Org, Ship-to, UOM, Quantity and Need-by-date are shown by default.

These fields can be edited as needed. You can split the lines and can change the ship-to

Organization, quantity of items to be shipped and delivery date.

you provided and rest of the quantities (to the same ship-to address or a different address) to a different

CREATE REPORTS IN ORACLE:

In Oracle Reports, you have two options for building a paper report. The first one is to use

the wizards and editors in Reports Builder. The second one is to define the data model and/or

layout for your paper report in XML. Here we will discuss the steps to build a paper report using the Report Wizard.

Step 1: Invoking Reports Builder and the Report Wizard

When you invoke Reports Builder, the Welcome dialog box gives you the option of using the

Wizard to build a new report. The Report Wizard provides an easy step-by-step interface to create

a new report. The Report Wizard opens with a Welcome page. To suppress this page, clear the “Display at startup”

check box. You can reinstate this page in the same way as the Welcome dialog box in Reports

Builder; select the Wizard tab in the Preferences dialog box and then select Report Wizard Welcome

Page.

Each page of the Report Wizard asks you for information to help you create your initial

report. Step through the wizard pages, selecting next and back, until you are satisfied with the initial

information that you have entered. On the last page, select Finish.

Next, you have to define the data source type for your report. Through the implementation of

the Pluggable Data Source (PDS) feature in Oracle Reports, the data for your report can come

from any source you choose. Reports Builder provides interface definitions that act as a translator

between Reports Builder and a PDS by redefining Reports Builder’s requests in terms your data

source uses.

Step 5: Building a Query using Query Builder

Building your query with the Query Builder GUI saves you time and increase the ease of

use for developers not familiar with building SQL statements or with the application tables. To build a query using Query Builder: 1. Select Query Builder from the Query page in the Report Wizard. 2. Enter your username, password, and alias in the Connect dialog box that appears if you have

not already connected to the database. 3. Select the data tables to build the query. 4. Click Include. The tables appear in the selection area. 5. Click Close to close the Select Data Tables window. 6. In each table, double-click the column names that you want in the query, or use the check boxes.

To select all columns, double-click the Table title bar. 7. Click OK.

Query Builder copies the query syntax into the Report Wizard. You can modify the query by reentering Query Builder or by modifying the SQL query statement text.

Note: If you prefer to write your own SQL statement, enter the syntax directly in the SQL query

statement area of the Query page. Alternatively, you can import the contents of a file by

clicking Import SQL Query.

Step 6: Selecting Displayed Fields

In the Field page, select each field from the Available Fields list and click >. The selected fields

move to the Displayed Fields list. To display all fields, click >>. You can alter the sequence of displayed fields by dragging one field above or below another in the

list. The sequence of fields in this list determines how the fields appear in the report output. In a

tabular report, the fields appear in sequence from left to right across the page. Fields that remain in the Available Fields list are available for you to reference in your report definition as hidden fields or in PL/SQL trigger code. In the report output, the user sees only those fields that you transfer to the Displayed Fields list.

Step 7: Totals and Labels

In the next two pages of the Report Wizard, you can create totals based on any of the

displayed fields and modify the labels and width of the displayed fields.

If the initial label is wider than the field, Reports Builder allows enough space for the label, or

displays it on multiple lines.

If you increase the number of characters in the label text in the reentrant Wizard, the label can appear truncated in the report output.

Report Templates enforce corporate standards as well as create professional-looking

paper reports easily.

Select a template from the list of predefined template names. In a template, the fonts, styles,

and colors are already selected for designated objects. A variety of templates are available with the

Step 10: Saving the Report Definition

Remember to save the report frequently by selecting Save in the toolbar, or by using the File > Save menu option. The recommended format for storing paper reports is with an .rdf extension. If you want to make a copy of the report definition in a different filename, use the menu option File > Save As. There is no toolbar button for the Save As option.

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE SUMMARY

The past month of my internship has been very instructive for me. Atlas Battery (Pvt)

Limited has offered me opportunities to learn and develop myself in networking area,

infrastructure and databases. I gained a lot of experience, especially in infrastructure

department. A lot of the tasks and activities that I have worked on during my internship

are familiar with what I’m studying at the moment .I worked in Networking area and

databases where I did different work This gave me the chance to explore and also to select

IT field as my job option to work in after my education.

Before my internship started my ideas did not match the experiences have gained during my

internship. There is a big difference in the University projects and the tasks and activities

during the actual work. In University we learn how to describe the work in projects, where in

work you learn how to implement them in reality. This internship was definitely an

introduction to the actual work field for me. I have learned to work in a Networking

organization and apply my knowledge into practice.

My mentor during my internship was Mr. Asim , Mr. Rafay and Mr. Talha who I have also

learned a lot from during my internship. As an Assitant Manager of Atlas Battery (IT), Mr.

Asim has lots knowledge in Networking field and infrastructure, Troubleshooting and

Network Design

He was very helpful and always willing to give me advice and feedback which I appreciate .I

have tried to learn as much as possible from him. I also get a good feedback from my

mentor Mr. Asher (assistant Manager MIS), Mr. Ishtiaque and Mr. Ali Shahab in the field of

database and ERP.
