It will take a minimum of six to eight weeks to secure a placement in line with your requirements. Note: The confirmation of the internship is subject to an interview which will be held upon arrival at EC Cape Town. Only once the interview is held, can EC then confirm the internship. Internship Examples The internships described below are example internships facilitated for past participants of the EC Cape Town Internship Programme. Please note that your personal placement will be determined by our applications staff in accordance with the information provided to us in your internship questionnaire and your CV. It is possible that your final placement will not be one of the example sites listed in this document, but rather will be carefully selected from our extensive database of companies to better fit your exact internship goals.

Magic Mountain Productions

Position: Production Assistant

Duration of Internship: 2 to 6 months

Available: October - March

Internship Description: Magic Mountain Productions is a Cape Town-based film production company with expertise in many different types of project situations: catalogue shoots, advertising campaigns, music videos, feature length films, television mini-series and documentaries. Interns will work with the production manager to help arrange and coordinate all aspects of a photographic or film production - from travel arrangements to accommodation, transportation, production vehicles, crew, model bookings, location scouting, permits, catering, props, equipment, art buying and more. The majority of Magic Mountain’s clients are European, so spoken fluency of German, French, Spanish or Swedish is a huge advantage for this position. The dates of this internship correspond with the Cape Town film season, which starts in mid-October and ends in mid-March.

La Couronne Wine Estate Position: Marketing and Business Administration / Viticulture

Duration of Internship: 2 to 6 months

* The viticulture internship is only available during the months of

January-April, when the Cape’s grape harvest occurs.

Internship Description: La Couronne exports most of its wines overseas, though they have recently made the decision to start selling their wines domestically. Marketing and business administrative interns will be involved in the process of marketing the La Couronne label. Interns will also participate in the behind the scenes administrative process that keeps a wine estate operational.

La Couronne will occasionally host special events and interns will be expected to participate in such functions. Overall, this internship will give interns a great feel for the inter-workings of a South African wine estate and the delicate task of marketing a wine label. Prospective interns should enjoy working with a team and not hesitate to get their hands dirty when asked to do so. An intern should also appreciate the difference between a good and bad tasting wine!

Internship Description (viticulture): The La Couronne viticulture internship position is for an applicant interested in wine making. Viticulture interns will participate in the La Couronne grape harvest and experience the wine making process from vine to bottle. Since the harvest season takes place between January and April, this is a seasonal internship position. Similar to the marketing internship description, interns should expect to gain a unique understanding of the wine making process that the normal wine aficionado will never experience.

Two Ocean’s Aquarium Position: Marine Biology

Duration of internship: 2 to 3 months

Internship Description: Students with a passion for Marine Science should consider this internship, for they will work with a unique diversity of species living in the aquarium’s many tanks. One of this internship’s highlights includes feeding the ragged tooth sharks living in the show case “predator tank”. Interns will shadow the aquarium’s staff and biologists while gaining knowledge of the marine life that inhabit the waters off the coastline of South Africa.

Obzside Adventure Centre: A PADI diving centre Position: Marketing Assistant

Duration of Internship: 1 to 3 months

Internship Description: Obzisde is looking for motivated and independent interns to create a well thought-out and carefully executed marketing campaign for the centre. Interns will be given the opportunity to use their creativity in creating this campaign with a focus on internet based marketing. Interns will work on trip presentations, membership drives, web presence and weekly email marketing. Also plan to dive with Obzisde during its weekend club dives. Obzside is preparing to launch a progressive diving service - the wreck diving safari. Interns will play a major role in unveiling this project to the public.

African Eagle Day Tours Position:

Marketing and P.R. Assistant

Duration of Internship: 1 to 3 months

Internship Description: Interns will be involved in a variety of tasks designed to best utilize individual’s skills. African Eagle interns will be involved in the following: marketing and advertising, human resource management, business management and tour consulting (arranging packages for clients). Interns will work in an environment that is both multicultural and international. A requirement of this internship is a positive attitude and a willingness to work with members of a team. Interns will participant in all the African Eagle Day tours to gain a better understanding of its products. Spoken German, French, Italian or Spanish is a major asset.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is transportation included? Internship sites are located throughout the city. Although we do our best to place you as close to the company as possible, sometimes there will be a commute to and from your place of work. Depending on the accessibility of the site this will involve reasonably priced public transport options. The cost of this is not included in your placement fee.

Does the price of the internship depend on the number of months the student stays? The price remains the same, regardless of your length of stay.

What is included in the program of a usual week? A complete work week would include full-time internship duties from Monday to Friday. You will also be allowed to participate in all EC’s activities and social programme for the full duration of your stay.

Stillking Films Position: Production Secretary

Duration of internship: 2 to 4 months

Time of Year: November - March

Boulders Beach Penguin Colony (Table Mountain National Park)

Position: Conservation

Duration of internship: 2 to 3 months

Internship Description: This Internship offers participants the opportunity to work with conservation staff and park officers at the Cape Penguin Colony at Boulders Beach, located in Simons Town, South Africa. Interns will get the opportunity to learn about the colony in great detail and about the conservation efforts in place to protect the colony, all while interacting with the penguins themselves. Interns will then get the opportunity teach what they have learned to foreign and local visitors to the colony. During the internship, participants will get the opportunity work with other people and work within different areas of the national park’s organization. Participants come away with a good understanding of how a sustainable tourist organization works, the conservation techniques and philosophy of the organization, including the conservation techniques and philosophy of the organization, especially the challenges facing the Cape Penguin Colony, both present and future.

St. Anne’s Homes Position: HIV/Aids / Life Skills Educator

Duration of internship: 3 to 6 months

Internship Description: Interns will be working at St. Anne’s Shelter, a home for women with young children who would otherwise land up on the street. Interns will help the staff run product-making and business skills workshops through the organization’s Skills Training Programme. Interns will also assist in the coordination of the St. Anne’s Homes HIV Project and be involved in HIV education, counsel- ling, support and shelter to infected mothers and their children. Due to the high degree of responsibility interns will be given as an intern at St. Anne’s, the minimum duration of this internship is 12 weeks.

Internship Description: This is one of our most prestigious and competitive internship sites. Stillking Films is a film production company with offices in 6 different countries. Some of its more well-known films include: Wanted, starring Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie; Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig; and Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Stillking is also partnered with some of the biggest names in the film industry: Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, Disney, Dreamworks, Universal and Sony Pictures. For someone considering a career in the film industry, this is an amazing internship opportunity. Interns will work as production secretaries at the Stillking offices and as set coordinators when the company is managing a film shoot. Interns will learn to communicate and work with a wide variety of people involved in a film production. You will gain exposure to all aspects of a film shoot, from catering to equipment. Any potential applicants must have a passion for film and be considering a future in the film industry. It is also recommended that applicants have some film experience. Interns will be asked to work long hours while on set, but it is guaranteed to be a fun and hapy environment!
