IWCZ NEWSLETTER

The month of March has an interesting position in the rhythms of nature and the way humans

have measured time and built calendars in this part or the globe. In the old Roman calendar, March was the 1st month of the calendar year with diff erent reli-gious observances and new years celebrations. It was named “Martius” aft er the Roman god of war and protector of agriculture. For Romans, it was a good time for agricultural and warfare activities. The meteorological and astrolog-ical (Spring Equinox) beginnings of Spring are both in March. Later on, March became the 3rd month of the year, both in the Julian and the Gregorian calendars. The Croatian language uses old traditional names, instead of internationally used Roman names, for all the months of the year. The Croatian months names sound quite archaic to us nowadays so we had to learn them all by heart. The names call forth an interesting legacy, understanding and wisdom from the past.

The Croatian name for the 3rd month of the year is Ožujak, meaning “a lie” or “to lie, deceive” pointing that the weather is still very changeable and deceiv-ing. In the older Polish language the expression is

“ fl ower deceiver”, as if the weather is tricking the fl owers to come out early from the soil, warning us to remain cautious and be aware of the frosts and winter tail ends.January in Croatian is Siječanj, related to the verb

“siječi” which means to cut, the season of cutting wood.February is Veljača, related to “velji”, meaning bigger and/or longer pointing to the fact that the daylight is becoming longer. The next three months in the Croatian language are related to the plant kingdom: April is Travanj based

upon word “trava”, meaning grass, the green month, as grass is growing prominently; May is Svibanj, referring to a bushy deciduous plant “Svib/a” (Cornus sanguinea), common dogwood’s blooming season; June is Lipanj, referring to a medicinal tree “Lipa”, linden tree’s pleasant fl owering season. The next two Summer months are related to harvest-ing: July is Srpanj, referring to “srp”, which is a sickle (a hand-held agricultural tool with metal curved blade used for harvesting). August is Kolovoz, refer-ring to “voziti kola”, driving carriages with harvesting goods to their storage.September is Rujan, commonly people think it is related to the autumnal red and rusty coloring of the foliage, or the color of the wine, while the other interpretations point to the onomatopoeic eff ect of the sound of deer and other animal’s love song that time of the year–“rjati”.October is Listopad, an easy one to understand as it translates to the falling of the leaves. November is Studeni related to “studen” which is “cold” and even frost, underlying the drop of temperatures below zero.December is Prosinac. An easy interpretation can be linked to “prositi”, meaning to “beg” or “pray”, pic-turing the time of the year when people were more praying and begging (advent time); another inter-pretation is related to the Winter Solstice when the sunlight is sieved through.

On a more personal note, the month of March has a special place in my life as being my birthday month as well as for 25% of our Board Members this year. While thanking Mother Nature for all that she provides, I am wishing you all an enjoyable and reju-venating March! Happy International Women’s Day! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Happy Father’s Day! Happy Spring!

SHOOTING WORKSHOP

In February we had two glass fusion workshops for two groups lasting about 2 hours. The workshop program included:

- Introduction with glass, tools and materials- Drawing schetches- Cutting and breaking glass by hands- Colouring with pigments, glass powder and pastes- Making molds- Bending glass in stove by glass fusion technique

We learnt about a very simple and beautiful technique of glass fusion. We practised to fuse together layers of glass and made our own creations through socializing and sharing ideas over a cup of coff ee and biscuits. Each lady made a glass creation which was sent to the Club a week later aft er it went through the oven burning process. The ladies also had a chance to see all the beautiful works of our designer and glass decorator. It was a very pleasant morning.

Karmen Pticar

On the 31st of January we took a trip to little town Čazma, 60 km away from Zagreb to learn how to handle sport fi rearm and shooting under supervision. It was a perfect getaway in countryside and a short break from the hectic city life.

First we went on a shooting range and for most of us it was the fi rst time that we visited shooting range and hold a fi rearm. We started to shoot with a 22 calibre fi rearm that is used for sport purposes on a short range of 50 meters shooting targets made of paper with a solid black circle on a white background. Monocular helped us to improve skill by quickly being able to compare aiming point and where the actual bullet impacted the target. Some of us had great beginner luck, and were most likely helped by the fact that one of our supervisors and advisor was a lady from the shooting association.

The bravest ones got a chance to try out real fi rearm. It was an interesting experience for people willing to compare what they see in action-packed movies with the real thing. One important thing we learned was that real guns with their power immediately demand respect. Also, it’s not that easy like in the movies.

Aft er the shooting workshop we visited a Dragon Nest in a wine growing village and of course Mayor of Cazma Mr Dino Pirak was there to rescue us and tell us little bit more about history of the town. Cazma today has about 8500 inhabitants and was a very important administrative and diocese start-ing from the 13th century. Dragon Nest is actually a hill where, according to a Slavic myth, a dragon come and rested before the last battle with the main god Perun. The dragon, which comes from the underground every spring, is a symbol of the people who developed various agriculture and farming skills. So if someone calls you a dragon in Cazma it may be a kind of compliment meaning that you are a strong and powerful person with a lot of knowledge and skills. That’s exactly how they called mayors wife – a dragon lady who runs “Rural Tourism and Restaurant Pirak- Dragon Nest” as well as takes care of all plants and animals on the farm. Nature and traditional cuisine were a real combina-tion to relax and we are for sure coming back during spring again! We may even try birdwatching! Special thanks to Suzana Lahonsek and Marina Raskaj for organizing the trip.

TRIP TO SAMOBOR

On a somber day on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 twenty four ladies met in Samobor – a medival town with baroque architecture – with approximately 19,000 inhabitants, located 20 km from Zagreb.Approaching the main square is the Town Hall, located at King Tomislav Square, house number fi ve built in 1828 based on designs by Bartol Felbinger. While standing at the main square, one can see in the distance on the so called Tepec Hill the ruins of the old town from the 13th century, of which only the defence tower remains. What struck me immediately at the entrance of the building hanging on its façade was a huge SHERIFF sign with an accompanying picture of a cowboy holding a revolver; one immediately knows that it is a place of power, but in this case, only a hilarious sign representing the famous Samobor carnival which is held each year during the month of February. Only later do I learn that cowboys are the theme of the carnival for this year.Upon our arrival we were met by the staff of the Mayor’s offi ce, who introduced us to Samobor, its history, diff erent festivals held, products made there, etc. The array of doughnuts and custard pastries, was laid out with coff ee and overlooked by numerous paintings by Croatian painter, Mr. Zlatko Prica. We were informed that Samobor is also known for its religious tourism, having at its door KUĆA SUSRETA – TABOR (HOUSE OF WORSHIP), belonging to Croatian Franciscan Province of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Our next port of call was a small holding of Family Filipec, having been met by the 7th generation, Mr. Antun Filipec, who introduced us to products that are made by the family – such as, Bermet (aperitif wine) and Muštarda (made with mustard seeds and grape jam).Aft er degustation of both, we headed to Lavica Hotel and Restaurant for lunch. The carnival theme is also obvious here with waiters dressed in cowboy attire. Here we each enjoyed our delicious meal with conversations ranging from the recipe for rudarska greblica (miners' pie) — another of Samobor's speci-ality — to covered networks of hiking trails, bike routes, promenades, educational routes and recreational areas and cave(s) off ered by beautiful Samobor Hill Range.

2017 NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Miljenka Bolf-KrklecI've been a long term member of the Club, and served on the executed board for several times as well as being the member of the nominating committee.I am always ready to contribute in all aspects of the Club.As a Croatian member, I'm happy to introduce and represent my country to the international members, welcome them and help them to understand, accept and fi nd their way here, as easily as possible.IWCZ has so many excellent things to off er to its members. In saying that, I am openly inviting the members to take part in the Board for the next season.

Sonja VukadinCroatian by origin, I graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Zagreb. I enjoy life through my hobbies, which are mainly designing fi ne jewellery and playing golf.I joined the IWCZ back in 2001 and have served as Activities Coordinator. To be part of Nominating Committee is a great honor to me; it feels cosmopolitan and I am always happy to help our foreign members to learn and understand all that Croatia has to off er.

Barbara Maria LukačI happily moved to Zagreb from the United States with my family in 2006. Born to Croatian- Dalmatian parents and raised in the United States, and married to a fantas-tic Croatian-American man, I feel I am both American and Croatian. I work in the banking industry and am the proud mother of two very active sons.I love being a part of the IWCZ community as I have met many interesting women from all around the world and learnt about the uniqueness and diversity of various cultures. Having served on the board as President and Vice President, I am thrilled to be a part of this year's Nominating Committee and look forward to working with this dynamic team of women.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE AND THE PROCEDURE

It is time for the Club to select the new Executive Board which will offi cially take over on the 1st July 2017. The Nominating Committee (NC) is responsible for the selection and election process. The NC is selected by the current Executive Board and consists of 5 ladies from the General Assembly. Ladies who volunteer to be on the NC are responsible to nominate candidates to serve on the next Executive Board. Ladies on the NC are unable to nominate themselves. Once the NC has identifi ed the eligi-ble members willing to serve on the new Executive Board they inform the current Executive Board that the selection process has been completed. The voting process is done at the May GM when the assembly is asked to vote for the elected candidates. The elections at the GM are organized by the NC and recorded by the Executive Secretary.
