Maximizing fleet utilization and avoiding the economic and societal costs of commercial vehicle accidents should be one of the key objectives of anycompany. With available government statistics illustrating the negative impact of accidents upon companies operating commercial vehicles combinedwith the increasing availability of accident-avoidance technologies, there has never been a more opportune time to address this issue. This session onaccident free driving will enable attendees to hear from commercial vehicle manufacturers, fleet owners, and suppliers about exciting new advances inaccident-avoidance for commercial vehicles.

The automotive industry and the Army are achieving benefits from collaborative research and partnerships which leverage diminished resources. Industryis enjoying an unprecedented technology research upsurge. The Army has facilities and methodology for specialty areas such as off-road mobility thatindustry can make use of without an initial investment. The Army is currently in the process of converting from Military Specifications (MIL SPEC) tocommercial standards with an up-dating and revision benefit to industry. In addition, the Army represents a significant potential market for modifiedcommercial vehicles. In the depressed economy, the Department of Defense is purchasing and pushing key automotive technologies, helping certainindustries..... This session will focus on some of the partnerships formed to help defend the homeland...

Room Technology Theater

The age of the over-the-road truck in Mexico is increasing with a significant portion of trucks in Mexico built between 960-1980. With NAFTA, the borderbetween Mexico and United States is expected to open soon, but the older trucks in Mexico do not meet the DOT standards making it difficult toimport/export across the border using trucks from Mexico. There are various concerns particularly in emissions and safety. With the recent 2002 EPAemission standards for trucks, the price point of a truck has dramatically increased questioning the logic of implementing 2002 US emission standards inMexico. The implications on the Mexican economy are significant and are encouraging the illegal import of used trucks from United States to Mexico. Mexican Federal government and OEM subsidiaries have several initiatives planned or in progress addressing this priority issue in Mexico. This panel would discuss the issue at hand from the perspective of an truck OEM, fleet operator, and government officials (economist, border control,emission/safety minister (possibly Mexican & US)) on the medium term initiative to address affects on the Mexican economy.

The purpose of this panel discussion is to probe into how System Engineering forms a structured development process that evaluates the scope, time tomarket, risks, & costs and how all of these effect the total life cycle of the endeavor. Specific emphasis will be placed on defining customer needs, thetrade-offs early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design and system validation.

Further topics may involve various engineering methodologies used for the design and creation of complex mechanical and/or electrical systems, with afocus on the successes and challenges that System Engineering face in the Truck and Bus Industry.
