Welcome It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the International Conference on Ground Improvement and Ground Control: Transport Infrastructure Development and Natural Hazards Mitigation (ICGI 2012). The Conference

is hosted by the Centre for Geomechanics and Railway Engineering and the SMART Infrastructure Facility at the University of Wollongong. It is co-hosted by the Australian Geomechanics Society, ISSMGE, International Geosynthetics Society and SEAGS. The conference sponsors are Menard-Bachy, Coffey Geotechnics, Douglas Partners, GHD, Keller, Maccaferri, Infratech, Geo-Con and Cofra.

In Australia, the recent infrastructure boom has reflected the need for extensive ground improvement as large construction projects must encompass soft and weak ground in all States including compressible soft clays, highly erodible silts, weak landslide debris, weakly cemented sands, and highly fractured and weathered rock mass. In this context, the launching of the ICGI 2012 Conference in Wollongong, Australia has been most appropriate and timely. The idea of hosting this follow up event in the scenic city of Wollongong was born partly due to the successful International Symposium on Ground Improvement Technologies and Case Histories held in Singapore in 2009 and the contributions to ground improvement that the University of Wollongong has made over a long period.

The Conference will be held in the McKinnon Building at the University of Wollongong, during 31 October - 2 November 2012. The Conference will aim at promoting ground improvement concepts and applications predominantly in the fields of transport infrastructure and natural hazards mitigation. This Conference will act as a platform to disseminate the most recent research and field advances to the geotechnical community around the globe. Outstanding Keynote lectures, State of Art presentations, Heritage lectures and numerous technical discussions will contribute three days of scientific and technical discourse, followed by attractive excursions encompassing the natural landscape of the south coast of New South Wales.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I look forward to welcoming you to Wollongong.

Yours Sincerely

Prof. Buddhima Indraratna (Chair, ICGI 2012) Professor of Civil Engineering and Research Director, Faculty of Engineering Centre for Geomechanics and Railway Engineering University of Wollongong, Wollongong, NSW 2522, Australia Tel: (61 2) 4221 3046; Fax: (61 2) 4221 3238

InfraTech transformed Clough Properties’ Salentina Ridge site in Beaconsfield from minimal value land to A class building lots. Our innovative ground strengthening solution featured 20 metre deep compaction of imported building rubble.

At InfraTech, we specialise in preparing, improving and strengthening the ground under almost any project.

Based on extensive research, our proven techniques mean you can often create a rock-solid foundation from unstable ground, even if it’s made up of silt, clay, sand, uncontrolled fill, collapsing soils or swelling clay. It’s a process we’ve used to create foundations for housing developments, oil and gas facilities, heavy industrial plants, stockpiles and even international airport runways.

Our total ground-strengthening solutions are extremely cost-effective. Often with cost savings

of around 30% over traditional processes.

Our engineers have yet to see a problem they can’t solve. And we’re so confident of our work, we sign off every project with a $20 million professional indemnity.

Leading companies who use our services include BHP Billiton, Fortescue Metals Group, Apache Energy, Woodside, Australand, Mirvac, Peet & Co, Match Group, Lend Lease, Landcorp (WA), Thiess, John Holland, Laing O’Rourke, BCG and Georgiou.

To find out more about our innovative ground strengthening solutions, call Tom Holtby on 08 9337 5922 or email [email protected]

With InfraTech’s innovative deep lift compaction using HIEDYC technology, Solomon Mine’s stacker/reclaimer embankment will save 70% on water, be ten times stronger and 30% cheaper than conventional earthworks.

Our ingenious deep compaction and vertical draining for Malaysia’s Kotakinabalu airport extension allowed the construction of the runway thickness to be reduced by a massive 30%.

InfraTech’s deep compaction ground-strengthening for the Australian Marine Complex was completed using the in-situ silt. This alleviated the costly requirement to remove and replace the existing ground.

We’ll put you on solid ground. Faster. Stronger. Cheaper. Greener.
