President’s reportDear IADT Member,

IADT is in a truly active phase of development and making tremendous progress. Membership is now 650.

We are also currently working hard planning the next IADT World Congress in Istanbul, an ideal venue for a world congress, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The scientifi c program will be one of the best ever, with many distinguished speakers already having accepted our invitations. You can get yourself updated from our web page www.iadt-dentaltrauma.org and later on the special congress web page as the preparations for this great event continue.

Fourteen committees have been appointed and more than 40 IADT members are now actively working on IADT issues. Information on committee activities are published elsewhere.

We have recently endorsed the fi rst app “Dental Trauma” made by Dr Ulf Glendor in Sweden for smartphones (iPhones and Androids). It provides information for the public on how to manage an emergency dental trauma situations. We recommend you to download it from the App store and spread the information to the public.

IADT will shortly be presenting continuing education courses on dental trauma in various geographic locations around the globe with discounted registration fees for IADT members. Keep yourself updated on the IADT web page.

The fi eld of Dental Traumatology is not a specialty, so it has earlier not been possible to have recognition for members who have acquired competence in our fi eld. We are going to change this with our fellowship. The IADT Fellowship in Dental Traumatology will be launched later this year. Members who have held membership for at least three years, have demonstrated activity in a variety of activities in dental traumatology, and who pass an online examination will earn special recognition and the distinctive title of Fellow of the International Association of Dental Traumatology. You will fi nd more information in another page of this Newsletter and, as this work progresses, on the web site www.iadt-dentaltrauma.org. As at least 3 years of membership in IADT will be one of the prerequisites to sit the exam, I advise you to sign up for membership today, if you have not already done this. Do convey information about our fellowship to colleagues you know who are interested in traumatology.

Our scientifi c journal, Dental Traumatology is making further progress and we have an increased infl ow of manuscripts. The journal give priority to review articles and original articles. The journal is included in our membership and continues to publish the best scientifi c dental trauma literature in the world, providing up-to-date information to our members on Dental Trauma.

The IADT Guidelines is have been a great success and translation to different languages is progressing. If you are interested in translating the IADT guidelines please contact us. Our guidelines have for a long time has been considered the gold standard of treatment worldwide. Recently the American Association of Endodontists endorsed the IADT guidelines. We are working together with AAE further develop cooperation between us.

IADT is actively supporting the Dental Trauma Guide team in Copenhagen and this team has further developed the interactive program Dental Trauma Guide. A trauma symposium will be arranged in Copenhagen later this year. More information can be found in this newsletter and on the web page.

As you can see from the highlights above, there are many reasons to support our association and be member in IADT. Welcome to be a member of our great multi-disciplinary association where colleagues with interest in traumatology meet.

Fellowship News

The Fellowship Committee is currently finalizing the details of the Fellowship program which will be released later this

year. This will be an exciting development for the Association and allow members to be recognized by their peers for their

knowledge and experience in traumatology.

A prerequisite for the Fellowship is continuous and current membership of IADT for at least three years. A Fellow must remain

members of the Association. The Fellowship will be based on the submission of case material with follow-up, an assessment of

Activity in Traumatology and an online examination. Activity assessment will be by virtue of a point system. Assessed activities

in traumatology will include: Contributing to continuing education programs, Lecture presentation, Poster presentations,

Organizing traumatology courses, IADT activities and committees, Publications, Translations and community services.

News from Japan

Past President, Mitsuhiro Tsukiboshi, reports that the Japanese trauma group within

the IADT stand at 131. This is the by far the largest group within our Association

and most of the credit for this must go to Mitsuhiro’s tireless promotion of both IADT

and traumatology education. Mitsuhiro is shown here discussing traumatology

in his own seminar rooms attached to his practice, a picture of Jens Andreasen is

visible on the screen. Mitsuhiro’s lectures worldwide on Traumatology, CBCT and

Autotransplantation.

World Congresses are multi-disciplinary occasions where colleagues with interest in

Traumatology meet and discuss research, techniques and philosophy. A nice story coming out of the last World Conference in

Rio de Janeiro is that after hearing Mitsuhiro lecture, a Brazilian dental practitioner flew with his son from Brazil to Japan so

that Mitsuhiro could perform an autotransplantation for a missing incisor. We are indeed an international traumatology family.

Joint Meeting IADT and AAE

IADT officers met in Hawaii in April with the Executive Committee

of the American Association of Endodontists to discuss items of

mutual . President Lars Andersson, Secretary-Treasurer Lamar

Hicks and Board Director Nestor Cohenca represented IADT.

AAE executives were led by President James Kulild, President-

Elect Gary Hartwell and Vice President Robert Roda.

Among the discussion points were the 18th World Congress on Dental

Traumatology in Istanbul, Turkey, and the significantly updated IADT

website that now includes links to IADT sponsored or affiliated CE

courses scheduled in 2013 in San Diego, California, Copenhagen,

Denmark and Hangzhou, China.

There was agreement to continue cooperation between the two

organizations in disseminating, through mutual links on their respective websites, the critical information contained in the

updated (2012) IADT Guidelines and the yet to be published AAE guidelines for dental trauma, which will contain prevention

and follow-up treatment information for dental trauma in addition to the core IADT Trauma Guidelines. This productive

meeting demonstrated the willingness of both organizations to promote the availability of professional and public education

in dental traumatology throughout the USA, and around the globe.

IADT CommitteesOver 40 members are now working actively in IADT committees. Apart from spreading the administrative load, the involvement of so many members in the administration has resulted in many initiatives that are strengthening this Association.Engaging in a committee is a very good way to work for IADT and is excellent preparation for recruitment for executive offi cers in the future. Please let committee chairpersons know through president Lars Andersson [email protected] if you wish to be involved in any committee.
