DomotexFlooring stars

We shall be returning to the NEC nextJanuary after all (see p6). I said last monththat Interiors UK organiser UBM deservedcredit for trying to breathe new life into theevent by moving it, rather than letting itwither further. So, let me congratulateFurniture & Gift Fairs (the organiser of The Manchester Furniture Show) and the NEC for setting up The January FurnitureShow so quickly.

And further congratulations must beawarded for the decision to listen to theconcerns of retailers and exhibitors about the show overlapping Domotex and IMMCologne and then opting to make it a mid-week event.

All the exhibitors I spoke to at Interiors UKsaid it had been the best exhibition for manyyears in terms of orders and they wanted tocontinue at the NEC in January.

It seems we will have the flagship eventthat the industry needs, rather than theplethora of small events that was mootedahead of the show. It will obviously besmaller than when Interiors UK was at itspeak during the boom years, but everythinghas to start from somewhere, including TheFurniture Show at May Design Series.

Another month sees the OFT’sinvestigation into pricing in the interiorssector bring improved clarity for shoppers(see p10), but no fines. While not penalisingUnited Carpets and Floors-2-go was probablythe best thing given their circumstances, it’snot much of a deterrent to others. Contrastthat approach with the £94.1m of fineshanded out by the European Commission forprice-fixing in the polyurethane foam market(see p6).

Finally, the winner of the prize draw for a12 month Interiors Monthly subscription atInteriors UK was Dee Parker of Parker’sFurnishings & Carpets, Market Harborough,Leicestershire. Thanks to all who entered.

The king is dead, long livethe king. Exhibitionfragmentation seems tohave been avoided with a successor show at theNEC for next January

Magnum forceFlooring giant Unilin has

agreed its fourth acquisition

of the past year, boosting its

engineered wood floor

operations by buying Czech

manufacturer Magnum

Parket. In the past year

Unilin has bought Pergo,

Spano and Marazzi. ‘Ever

since 2007 the company has

experienced year on year

growth in this category. The

acquisition of Magnum is an

important step to support

this further growth for the

years to come,’ says a

statement.

All change for trade shows The organisers of the new furniture exhibition to be held at

the NEC next January have moved the show earlier in the

month to prevent it clashing with Domotex and IMM

Cologne.

The January Furniture Show was to be held from 18-20

January, with the opening Sunday overlapping with the

second day of Domotex and the second day clashing with

the opening day of IMM Cologne. Now it has been moved to

13-15 January (Tuesday to Thursday).

‘The show will be a new-look, new-feel event that will

provide a platform for the furnishings sector to showcase its

products. While January clearly remains the preferred time,

we’ve altered the timings to reflect changing needs

including moving away from a traditional weekend start

now that Sunday trading has become a critical fixture for

retailers,’ says co-organiser Theresa Raymond, director,

Furniture & Gift Fairs, which also runs The Manchester

Furniture Show.

Instead of using halls 1, 2, 3, 3a, 4 and 5, all of which were

not filled to varying degrees for Interiors UK last month, the

new show will use halls 1, 2, 3 and 3a ‘to ensure a tightly

focused, relevant show.’

Meanwhile members of the six flooring buying groups

will be able to attend both days of the Buying Groups

National Flooring Show for the first time from 13-14 May.

Previously only members of Flooring One were able to

visit the first day. More than 60 suppliers are expected.

The Branded Furniture Show, which was due to have

taken place for the third time at Cranmore Park, Solihull in

October has been merged with buying group Minerva’s

event at the Telford International Centre from 7-9 October.

Last year the two events clashed.

Meanwhile, the Long Eaton Guild has announced it will

hold a third event in 2015. As well as the traditional May

and September events, it plans a Winter Long Point show

from 2-4 February.

Norcro Exhibitions intends to launch The Spring

Floorcoverings Exhibition in Brighton from 3-5 March 2015.

Norcro says it plans to target both the retail and contract

sectors and hopes to attract more than 100 exhibitors.

The final and 29th Interiors UK at the NEC saw visitor

numbers leap by 15% to 21,114 on last year’s snow-effected

event. However, numbers were 13% lower than 2012.

‘This year’s Interiors UK has been an outstanding success.

We were incredibly pleased with the support we received on

site for our relocation to London. With this we are excited to

be able to build upon both the heritage and popularity of

the show to present an even better proposition with The

Furniture Show at May Designs Series,’ says Suzie Ager,

Interiors UK brand director.

Europe’s four major producers of polyurethane foam

operated a cartel for almost five years in 10 EU

countries, including the UK, according to the

European Commission.

Carpenter, Recticel and Eurofoam – a joint venture

between Recticel and Greiner – have been fined

£94.1m by the Commission.

Vita avoided a fine of £50.9m as it told the

Commission about the cartel.

The fines were reduced as all three cooperated

with the investigation and agreed to settle with the

Commission. The cartel passed on raw material price

increases to customers while avoiding price

competition between October 2005 and July 2010.

‘The [cartel members] organised price

coordination meetings at all levels of European

management. The participants met on the margins

of European and national associations and had

numerous telephone and other bilateral contacts,’

says the Commission.

About 75% of the PU foam market is for

mattresses and sofas with car seats accounting for

most of the remainder. Prices were fixed in Austria,

Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, the

Netherlands, Poland, Romania and the UK.

Simon has bought what is

Flooring duo changeprice advertising United Carpets and Floors-2-go have

agreed to change how they advertise

prices, including having proper RRPs and

including VAT respectively.

United has agreed with the Office of Fair

Trading that its advertised recommended

retail prices must be genuine and are those

at which the products are typically sold

throughout the year. The chain says it

stopped the policy of using RRPs at the end

of 2013.

It will also stop using time-sensitive

promotions such as ‘closing down sale’ or

‘closing down for refurbishment’ without

giving consumers clear information and an

explanation of the circumstances of the

promotion, something it says it is happy to

do.

United says it has already made the

changes, while Floors-2-go, has been given

until the end of February to make changes.

The OFT found that Floors-2-go was

displaying prices without VAT and some

claimed savings were incorrect.

The OFT said it was ‘concerned that the

displayed prices were potentially

misleading to consumers as they could not

in fact buy the product at the price shown,

and also that the savings being claimed

were inaccurate.’ Floors-2-go has amended

the website to ensure any percentage

savings claims are accurate and will include

VAT in prices.

‘Shoppers rely upon clear, honest and

upfront advertising of prices. When retailers

advertise misleading prices or promotions,

consumers often make different purchases

– or spend more money – than they

otherwise might have done,’ says Gaucho

Rasmussen, OFT director, goods and

consumer group.

‘When buying big ticket items, consumers

should always shop around and check that

the price they are paying represents value

for money,’ he adds.

Floors-2-go has until the end of this month to change

its policies

Carpetright has again issued a profits

warning despite an improvement in UK

business.

UK like for like sales rose by 1.9% in the

quarter to 25 January, with total sales up

by 0.6%.

But, the Dutch market has weakened

further, with like for like sales in the

Netherlands, Belgium and Republic of

Ireland down by 7.7%.

‘Tough trading conditions persisted in

the UK in the third quarter of our

financial year but our self-help measures

have enabled us to grow sales within a

difficult market. We have noted in recent

announcements that the like for like

sales performance in the UK has been

volatile, and this remains the case,’ says

Lord Harris, Carpetright executive

chairman.

‘That said, UK profit is in line with our

expectations and is expected to be

ahead of last year for the year as a whole.

Excluding the expected decrease in sales

from our wholesale business, the core

retail business would have reported a like

for like increase of 2.5%, against a strong

comparative of 4.7% growth last year.’

He says trading in the Rest of Europe

business continues to be dominated

by the difficult economic conditions

in the Netherlands. As a result it

expects this business unit to be loss

making for this financial year, but

expects it to remain cash generative.

‘In view of the market conditions,

predicting the final outcome for the year

with any accuracy is difficult and the

result for the year will depend on our

performance in the final quarter,’ he says.

‘In the UK, the pace of the recovery

remains uncertain in the face of

continuing sales volatility but we are

confident that our self-help measures

have further potential.

‘However, with a further weakening of

the market in the Netherlands, we now

expect underlying pre-tax profits for the

full year will be below the lower end of

the current range of market

expectations,’ Lord Harris adds.

Carpetright warns on profits again

The UK economy grew by

1.9% last year, its strongest

rise since 2007 when growth

was 3.4%.

The economy grew by 0.7%

in Q4, down on Q3’s 0.8%,

according to the Office for

National Statistics.

The service sector rose by

0.8% in Q4, matching its

performance of Q3 but

production dropped from

0.8% to 0.7% because of

lower North Sea gas and oil

production. Construction fell

by 0.3% in the quarter.

Ikea dividendIkea will pay a dividend to its

parent charitable foundation

for the first time in six years.

It is to pay £2.47bn as a

dividend to the Dutch

registered Stichting Ingka

Foundation despite only

increasing sales and profits by

3% to £23.08bn and £2.7bn in

the year to 31 August 2013.

Margins rose by 1.5% to

43.3%.

UK sales were £1.3bn.

Gillian Drakeford, Ikea UK

country manager, says sales

have accelerated with growth

of 9% during the autumn and

Christmas trading period.

NBF to introducecode to consumersThe National Bed Federation’s approval

mark and code of conduct will be launched

to consumers on 17 February. The move

comes as all NBF members passed the audit

for the code.

The code was designed to encourage

good practice in the industry and reassure

consumers, retailers and specifiers that they

can buy NBF Approved beds with

confidence, safe in the knowledge that

what they buy is safe, clean and honest.

‘We are delighted to be in a position

where we can respond to consumers and

retailers concerns with our new code,’ says

Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director.

‘BBC TV’s Fake Britain programme

[broadcast last month] highlighting the

illegal and unsafe mattresses on sale

through major high street retailers has

catapulted the code and approval mark into

the limelight.

‘Membership of the NBF is now

dependent on compliance with the code,

and to achieve that compliance every

NBF manufacturer member has been

independently audited against the code’s

strict criteria, covering flammability,

cleanliness of fillings and trade

descriptions,’ explains Alexander.

NBF manufacturers are being urged to

get their NBF Approved logos on to

retailers’ shopfloor models as soon as

possible as the campaign will be backed

with extensive PR and national newspaper

advertising.

‘Our campaign will focus not just on a

flammability angle but the growing

problem of “man with a van” scams where

old, used mattresses are being recovered by

unscrupulous dealers and sold as new,’ she

says.

‘We’ve already received numerous

enquiries from retailers on how they can

support this campaign following the FakeBritain programme, which is great news –

we need the retailers support to help stamp

out bad practice in the industry.’

Yes, you read that right. It has been a while since I wrote one ofthese columns and since the previous one we’ve plunged intoflooring properly. I think I mentioned before that we’d dabbleda bit as people were asking if we sold it, but a few months agowe looked at what was selling and what wasn’t.

It turned out that the flooring wasn’t generating anythingmore than the furniture was, in terms of profits. When welooked at the figures it was boosting footfall but most of thosewho came in didn’t buy (we write these things down). I can’tdeny that a few came back and bought furniture but it didmake us question whether we should just put differentfurniture in where the flooring was.

Then a few months ago the shop next door became free. It’snot that large, but it obviouslyhas its own front door, andimportantly, parking space.

When the owner said he hadbeen putting off retiring as hewas hoping to get a better pricefor the shop, I asked if we couldrent it until (if ) the commercialproperty market got better.

It seemed ideal if we were togive flooring a proper go: we’d

try it for a bit and if it didn’t work, well at least we’d tried. Weagreed a lease and set about redecorating.

Because we’d been dabbling, we’d had various reps try topersuade us to stock their ranges. Talking to a few of them andseeing what was happening in these pages, we decided to gofor what we thought was a comprehensive but tight offer fromtwo carpet suppliers, one for underlay and accessories and acouple of local wholesalers for everything else.

And do you know what, it’s worked out. I’m not saying we’regoing to threaten any market leaders, but in the past fivemonths we’ve made enough to at least cover the rest of thelease and staff costs (well, pay the fitter at least, but that’sanother story).

Shoppers even said they’d happily come back the next daywhen we told them ‘Mr Flooring’ was on a training course so hecould really make sure they got the right product. And whenthey did they usually bought. And a few have come back andhad a second room done. If I was getting over-excited I’d say itwas like having a new business. But it’s not really, it’s us usingour heads and taking a low-risk gamble.

I even went to Domotex last month. And what an eye opener, that was: ‘It’s the same price wholesale,’ but that’s foranother day.

20 Interiors Monthly February 2014

Different strokesRegency Carpets is combining profits and quality

While in recent years many companies

have placed their emphasis on driving

volumes, Regency Carpets has been

quietly getting on with a very different

approach.

In the past three years it has reversed a

product mix that was predominantly

lower end to one that is now primarily

higher end two-ply polypropylene

carpet, through ranges such as Elegance,

Trident and Opulence.

The most recent financial reports

reveal that sales increased by 12.6% to

€104m (£85.67m) in 2011/12, without

necessarily increasing volumes, thanks to

the improved sales mix. The value ranges

have brought net profits of €5.8m

(£4.78m), and the turnover is estimated

to be a further 10% higher for 2012/13.

Founded in 1986 by Noel Furlong and

headquartered in Dublin, production is

at the Belfast factory that opened in

2001. Since then Regency Carpets has

grown to be the largest carpet producer

in the UK.

It distributes across the UK through

the Furlong Flooring group to national

and regional multiples and independent

retailers (both buying group members

and non-members) from three

distribution centres in Preston,

Lancashire; Newport, Wales; and

Dartford, Kent. With the implementation

of a new Midlands warehouse operation

at Stonehouse later this year, stock levels

will increase from 3million sqm to

4.5million sqm.

The scale of the Regency

manufacturing operation can be clearly

explained by some simple figures:

● It has increased its stocking capacity

threefold over the past two years

through clever utilisation of space at the

factory. This in turn has improved its

service and distribution levels to the UK

allowing stock levels to be consistently at

96%. The addition of Stonehouse will

improve this further with the capability

to increase stock by a further 18,000 5m

rolls.

● Regency manufactures more than

400,000sqm of carpet a week, the record

being 525,000sqm. This is achieved

within a four-day week, with 22 tufting

machines working 24 hours a day,

backed by regular stringent quality

control checks to ensure Regency

delivers one of the best quality standards

in the industry.

The Carpet Foundation is launching a scheme to boost

independent retailers’ footfall by improving the performance of

the retailer’s website.

CF will carry out a health check of members’ websites, backed

by an external contractor, and provide individual advice to

retailers. Three CF staff have website training.

‘The focus is on retailers’ potential customers and pushing

customers to retailers. Retailers are aware of the power of the

Internet and know they have to do something. We want to get

consumers to see retailers’ websites and ensure the website is

working to its full potential. Anyone looking for carpet online is

a serious buyer and there are 3.3m searches for carpet every

month and 183,000 searches for carpet shops,’ says Andrew

Stanbridge, CF chief executive.

He reckons about 60%-70% of members need help with their

website but many retailers are concerned that as they don’t

know how to do it themselves, updating will be expensive.

‘Retailers don’t have to be online experts: we can do it for

them. For more-tech savvy retailers, the health check will help

them ensure that their online supplier is delivering what they

need,’ says Stanbridge.

‘It’s not about selling online, it’s about talking to those

millions of consumers who search online every day in the UK for

carpet and where to buy it.’

Last autumn the health checks were trialled at two retailers in

Worcestershire: Classic Interiors in Malvern and St Andrews

Carpets in Droitwich.

‘I really wanted to find out three things: what my competitors

were doing online, could consumers find me in my area and if

my website was

adding to my

business,’ says

Graeme Duncan,

Classic Interiors

owner.

The health check

revealed that a rival

retailer 10 miles

away was appearing

first in Google

searches for his area;

the website was

outdated and

ineffective;

Benefits of membershipThe online initiative is designed to demonstrate to

retailers what CF can do for them in addition to its

industry representative, technical and marketing roles.

‘We recognise retailers’ concerns over value for money

[for the £35 monthly membership fee] and this is part of a

move to address that,’ says Andrew Stanford, CF chief

executive. ‘Now we can demonstrate what we are

delivering. Retailers have always asked for footfall and

value and this will deliver this.’

CF has about 650 members, of which 300 have still to

switch from the levy membership system based on the

level of sales of CF’s manufacturing members. Stanford

hopes the online initiative can go some way to restoring

membership towards its peak of 1,243 members.

Initial signs are encouraging with new members, former

members rejoining and those on the levy switching to the

monthly subscription model.

Retailers will receive a free, independent health check of

their website and online presence including social media

such as Twitter and Facebook. They will be told what is

working and what is not, with recommendations to

improve performance and how to implement this.

Results will be monitored with a dedicated CF member

of staff to work with the retailer on a one-to-one basis.

and because it cost hundreds of pounds to make changes, none

were made.

The retailer now receives 350 visits a month, of these 80% are

potential new customers and the website regularly comes in

the top three in Google Places.

‘If only 20% of these new visitors to the website come into

the shop, that’s almost 60 a month. By not doing it properly I

was losing out in a very big way to my competitors,’ he says.

For St Andrews Carpets, while the website looked good, it

had issues such as a

lack of a sitemap

and no consumer

keywords.

On Google

searches it was

losing out to local

fitters.

‘I thought it was

doing all right. I

knew that people

who were coming

into the shop having

been on the website

were both new and younger customers to us. I now realise I

need to do more,’ says Mark Greenland, St Andrews Carpets

salesman and in charge of the website.

Visitor numbers have since doubled with 75% of visitors

being new to the website.

Designing outside the boxNolte Delbrück’s bedroom furniture combines practicality with good looks

‘It’s easy to think of wardrobes and bedroom cabinet as just

boxes but they’re so much more,’ says Wayne Dance, md of

InHouse, the UK agent for Nolte Delbrück.

‘Quality cabinetry is incredibly versatile and in today’s

modern living provides that dual aspect – stunning furniture

with an inherently practical purpose.’

Such attributes are embodied within Starlight, Nolte’s

flagship range, he says. Wardrobes, beds, bedside panels,

drawer fronts and dressing tables are adorned with Swarovski

crystals to give a sophisticated and subtle sparkle. Four colour

options are available: matt white, white, grey and aubergine

high gloss lacquer and the colours can be combined for a truly

individual design.

While relatively new to the UK market, Nolte Delbrück has

years of experience in manufacturing bedroom furniture in

Germany.

‘With ranges that set the benchmark for quality and design it

is a supplier of choice. And because it’s quickly establishing

itself in the UK, there’s a unique opportunity for retailers to

climb on board at the beginning, having unparalleled

exclusivity for such an offering,’ says Dance.

Skyline offers bespoke options to meet individual customers’

requirements and that fit into difficult spaces. The wardrobes

are stackable, meaning distinctive designs can be created for

the smallest to the largest rooms, and are available with LED

lighting options.

The La Vida range couples warmth with a clean design.

Lacquers in cream and cappuccino are enhanced by

reproduction heartwood beech and walnut. La Vida is versatile

with a wide range of possible combinations, with highlights

including 2m drawers and integrated lights.

Nolte is running a number of visits to its showroom and

factory during the year.

Best of both worldsSealy’s Hybrid range continues to gain sales

‘Our new Hybrid beds are continuing

their runaway success and have been

selling like hot cakes over the Christmas

and New Year period,’ says Neil Robinson,

Sealy marketing director.

‘And of course, if you saw the BBC Fake

Britain programme last month about

beds and mattresses being sold by

reputable retailers which were not

compliant with UK flammability

regulations, you can rest assured that all

Sealy’s products meet the very highest

and stringent standards. All carry both

the appropriate British Standards label as

well as the National Bed Federation

Approved label to reassure retailers,

specifiers and consumers that they can

buy beds with confidence and in the

knowledge that what they buy is safe,

clean and honest.’

The six-strong range of Hybrid beds is

a fusion of Geltex, a highly elastic gel and

breathable foam merged with specially

designed springs. The top layer of

cooling and breathable gel foam offers

anatomically correct support,

comprehensive hygienic protection and

no sweating or shivering – the ideal

sleeping climate for every season.

‘Unlike normal memory foam beds,

these Hybrid divans and mattresses are

wonderfully springy and bouncy. By

combining springs and the Geltex layer,

Hybrid beds truly offer the best of both

worlds,’ adds Robinson.

As well as containing Sealy’s Smart

Fibres, the ticking on the Hybrid beds is a

new type of flexible, stretchy soft

mattress covering that contains

Adaptive: a treatment that changes

passive textiles to textiles with a dynamic

response to environmental changes such

as temperature and humidity. Adaptive

re-uses the heat of the body to boost

moisture wicking, moisture evaporation

and cooling, to keep the sleeper and the

mattress cool and dry all night.

Adaptive treated mattress ticking

works through the bed sheets and/or

mattress protector as long as the textile

layers have a good breathability.

‘These innovative beds are going

down a storm and although it’s early

days, we are thrilled to be seeing repeat

orders for them coming through already.

We’re supporting this launch with a

major promotional campaign to the

public so retailers will hopefully be

seeing lots of customer requests to try

out these wonderful beds as 2014

progresses,’

adds

Robinson.

All Sealy Hybrid beds contain Geltex, a unique, gel infused foam that is quite simply the most advanced sleeping

material available. It has all the pressure relieving properties of traditional memory foam but provides a level of

"push back" body support that memory foam lacks. It also has an open cell structure that allows for far greater

breathability for the sleeper, allowing body temperature to dissipate quickly and effectively.

All Hybrid models also feature Adaptive technology - a ‘dynamic response’ textile that reacts to temperature and

moisture. Hydro-functional polymers change shape, boosting evaporation and helping to maintain a constant

temperature throughout the night.

Hybrid - a unique fusion of Geltex, Adaptive Technology and Springs.

All round protectionGuardsman’s latest collection is designed to drive incremental sales

Guardsman’s long history in protecting furniture is at the heart

of its new range of mattress protectors, which complement its

existing furniture care products and protection plans.

The range offers a good, better and best solution for

consumers, providing consumer choice at three price levels,

something which was not offered before.

‘Developing a range of protectors that provided a diverse

choice for consumers was imperative for us’, says Lucy Drake,

Guardsman UK product manager. ‘It gives consumers the choice

between our value for money Classic, environmentally conscious

Natural and our plush Luxury protectors. Our mattress protectors

can be sold to consumers whether they are purchasing a

mattress or not, providing additional value to the top and

bottom line for retailers,’ she says.

The range protects mattresses against dust mite infestations,

one of the greatest causes of asthma, allergies and eczema in the

UK. As well as being 100% waterproof they all offer a 10-year

product guarantee, protecting mattresses from stains and spills.

The Classic range has a soft terry cotton surface, keeping

mattresses and pillows clean and healthy. The Natural protectors,

made of Tencel fibre, are silky soft and perfect for sensitive skin,

while also being manufactured using an environmentally

friendly, sustainable process.

The Luxury protectors provide an extra plush option, as well as

being reversible, with a soft microfibre fleece on one side and a

cool quilted surface on the other.

The three ranges provide increasing values of guarantee

against new mattresses: Guardsman offers its guarantee for

higher end mattresses with its Luxury range, including those

retailing up to £15,000. Combined with a depth of up to 34cm,

the range is suitable for almost all mattresses.

The full range is now available on a display stand, giving

consumers the ability to easily self-select their desired protector.

Spoilt for choiceRauch has enhanced its bedroom collections

Rauch continues to update

its bedroom collections, with

many ranges specifically

chosen for the UK market.

‘Retailers had the

opportunity to see the 2014

updates at Interiors UK,

where we had products from

our four collections – Steffen,

Dialog, Select and Pack’s – on

show,’ says Joachim Salomon,

Rauch UK export manager.

Colour updates included

Sanremo light oak and

graphite, as well as different

high polish colours.

‘For the first time we

presented unique ranges of

chests of drawers and

matching pieces such as

bedside tables, both on

Select and Pack’s, which are

designed to match nearly

every wardrobe range. We

have also significantly

upgraded the folding door

technology.

‘There is still more in the

pipeline, which we might use

as promotional items or

specials during the year,’ he

says.

The main advantages of

the four Rauch brands for UK

retailers are the multitude of

options and choices.

According to Salomon,

retailers carrying all four

brands can address every

price point with products

from about £100 to £3,000.

The gliding door wardrobe

X-Tend from the Dialog

range has three different

looks, Stripe, Frame and Line,

and 14 colours from white

and high gloss up to several

types of glass. Handle bars

are available in aluminium,

chrome or the carcase colour.

X-Tend is also available with

matching pieces.

Sanremo light oak and

graphite colours have been

added to Colette from the

Dialog collection. Gliding

and hinged door wardrobes

as well as a selection of

matching pieces are

available. The beds are fitted

with upholstered

headboards and optional

LED lighting. Colette comes

in alpine white combined

with graphite.

Celle from the flatpacked

Pack’s brand offers

standalone wardrobes,

corner wardrobes and top

units. Four heights are

available: 197cm, 210cm,

additional small and large

drawers for extra storage

space.

The gliding door wardrobe

different front outfits.

UNDERLAY

34 Interiors Monthly February 2014

MidastouchCarpenter has expanded its domestic offer

The world’s largest PU underlay producer, Carpenter, has

expanded its collections targeting the domestic market with

Midas 12.

It is a 12mm thick underlay designed with modern living in

mind to combine durability with a feeling of luxury underfoot.

Carpenter hopes to build on the success of its existing Midas

8 and Midas 10 with the thicker underlay.

‘Homeowners are now looking for products that will last the

test of time – something that they’re not going to have to

replace every few years. A fantastic quality underlay will

enhance a cheaper carpet, a trend that homeowners are now

following as great quality underlay is considerably less

expensive than a high end carpet,’ says Helen Rowberry,

Carpenter national sales manager for underlay.

From the point of view of a fitter, the underlay is made from

PU which is relatively lightweight, making it much easier than

rubber to carry.

‘PU also offers excellent heat insulation and is highly resilient

and flame retardant,’ she says.

As with all Carpenter products, Midas 12 is made from

recycled material. The company’s growing commitment to the

environment saw the launch of a UK first underlay recycling

scheme, which currently operates in 22 regions.

relative lightness of PU underlay has made it

WBH combines craftsmanship, innovation,

and the latest production techniques to

produce affordable furniture

Firm principles

Woodberry Bros & Haines has stuck to its principles with the

latest release of Caxton collections launched at Interiors 2014.

In the spirit of continued progress it introduced five

contemporary and traditional furniture collections as well as

several additions to its bestselling ranges.

Sharing the same period recessed round wooden handles

and tapered legs, the Carnaby living and dining and Hepworth

bedroom collections reflect a move back to the more elegant

design influences of the 1960s while embracing all the practical

requirements of today’s lifestyles.

With its warm mid-oak finish, Carnaby is a contemporary,

flexible and space-friendly living and dining collection, offering

a choice of dining and occasional tables, storage and display

cabinets, bookcase and a corner entertainment unit with the

option of a shelf stacker behind.

Hepworth has an up to date blond ash finish creating a

modern sophisticated look that is also refreshingly homely. The

freestanding, compact bedroom collection offers a selection of

wardrobe units and chests of drawers.

Combining contemporary design and a mid-oak finish with

retro-style moulded metal handles, the Heritage living and

dining collection features display, storage and entertainment

cabinets, plus dining and occasional tables to give a wealth of

options, while the feature handles strike a note of classic style.

Designed with price in mind, Essentials is a compact entry-

level bedroom collection available in four finishes: white, grey

ash, mid and light oak with metal handles.

The Eclipse 400 bedroom collection is a modular 400mm

furniture system offering the building blocks for creating an

individual

bedroom. It

has the

contemporary

styling and

flexibility to

satisfy most

space

requirements – shelved or hanging wardrobes in three heights

and two widths, top boxes, chests of drawers, an overbed

surround and a desk. There are five finishes: black, grey, white,

aubergine gloss and light oak, delivering a more personalised,

almost fitted look while retaining the flexibility to rearrange.

The understated, matt painted Chantilly bedroom collection

saw the addition of contrasting Sleek Oak finish tops, giving it a

restored look. Finding a balance between rustic charm and soft

femininity, Chantilly Oak offers a choice of wardrobes and

chests of drawers as well as a cheval mirror, bed and console

dressing table.

What an incredible year 2013 was for us, topped off with a

fantastic January show at the NEC where we connected with

some amazing people and company representatives, hopefully

opening many new doors and strengthening existing partnerships.

We have seen such a change lately within the Furniture Industry.

A fresh and optimistic sense of restoration, a revitalised hope

throughout the nation that ‘springtime’ is around the corner - in

many more ways than seasonal!

We are about to celebrate our tenth anniversary and we want to

make 2014 the most memorable year yet. We have sewn so much

time, resources, care, love and passion into what we think is an

excellent service - and they are not our words, but yours, again

encouraging words spoken to us by so many at the Interiors show

this year.

One thing that we can promise, is that our prices will remain frozen

for yet another year - ten years without a single price increase is

something that we are very proud of in a society where we are

being financially challenged day after day in all aspects of life.

If you would like to see why so many people trust us, feel free to

contact me on the details below - you will not be disappointed with

what we have to offer!

Finally, thanks to all of you who have trusted us with your customers

and products over the years, may this continue for many years to

come. We will be holding various celebration services over the

year and we would love you to join us! Watch this space and wait

for your invitations!

With thanks from us all at the HFR Team.

Reinvention, repeat and reward was the theme at this yearʼs event

Bretz added a swivel and

Evolution rather than revolution was the outstanding theme at IMM

Cologne –even from the usually leftfield Bretz – as companies

expanded successful designs of recent years into new areas and for

Italian exhibitors largely repeated (with some tweaks) what they

showed in Milan last year.

Both strategies brought rewards as the improvement in the Eurozone

economy and the affluence of Russian and Chinese

middle-classes was easy to spot in the aisles:

particularly in the upmarket Pure halls.

Makinga markHimolla enjoyed success

at Brussels, IMM Cologne

and The Furniture Show

‘We were very busy at the show, and this

year were able to show retailers how to

display models with almost a studio

concept on the stand,’ says Mark Litterst,

Himolla UK export manager (pictured).

‘We are very busy

at the moment and

are very satisfied. We

have been in the UK

for six or seven years

and things are now

paying off. The sales organisation is now

in place, backed by head office, and the

products are now right for the UK

market.

‘When we first started in the UK, our

Zerostress brand was seen as an

alternative to existing high quality

recliner manufacturers. But now Himolla

is recognised for having a great variety of

products, lots of sizes – people are all

different and it is a very individual

purchase – and options such as lumbar

support or computer tables.’

Himolla’s signature is offering recliners

with integrated footstools. ‘It saves so

much space and is exactly what the

market wants. This has really taken off

and 70% of sales, both in the UK and

globally, are now with integrated

footstools,’ he says .

Himolla’s latest launch is Cosyform.

‘If previous recliners were Audi or

Mercedes, this is the Bentley,’ says

Litterst. ‘It has an integrated footstool,

manual or electric options and six sizes.

This will take us even further in the

market and lead us into a new era.’

The Zerostress collection has also been

expanded with an integral footstool.

ArtipelagoIFEX is Indonesia’s newest furniture exhibition

In recent years talk of Indonesia has been about its growing

economy and vibrant democracy that has maintained political

stability and allowed the country to emerge as a confident

middle-income country. Just a hop across from Singapore, the

nation’s capital Jakarta – the most populous city in South East

Asia – is gearing up for a new furniture exhibition that promises

to deliver on Indonesia’s creativity and artistic diversity.

With more than 700 exhibitors confirmed, IFEX will take place

at JI Expo, one of Jakarta’s largest and most sophisticated

exhibition spaces.

The country’s cultural and natural diversity is so rich

that inevitably it is reflected in the creations coming out of the

archipelago’s workshops and its furniture and handicrafts

industry has a solid reputation globally as a result of historical

traditions in woodwork and artistic crafts.

Continuing centuries’ old traditions, artisans continue to

innovate and refine their crafting skills using wood, rattan,

bamboo and a host of other natural resources that grow

abundantly under the equatorial sun.

This extraordinary diversity of products is visible in

showrooms and small retailers from Bali to central Java. Old

dugout canoes are given a new lease of life as bookshelves,

reclaimed timber boards are turned into racks and chairs, and

colossal tree roots are crafted into dining tables. For buyers this

means an almost bewildering array of products to choose from,

marrying the practical with the whimsical. This offers plenty of

inspiration to decorate anything from homes to restaurants and

offices to hotel lobbies.

According to IFEX organiser UBM and Dyandra, much

progress has been made by Indonesia to ensure the furniture

industry does not contribute to the country’s deforestation.

In response to a government campaign, levels of illegal

logging have fallen by 75% from 2000 to 2010 and a

nationwide programme is under way to ensure that

producers meet strict legal requirements when exporting to

the EU.

From Jakarta, reaching Indonesia’s furniture hub in central

Java is a one-hour flight, and from there it’s easy to canvas the

area to explore the workshops that produce and export

furniture.

Teak furniture production in central Java dates back to pre-

colonial times. Two historical clusters are the towns of Jepara

and Klaten that emerged before the 17th century to serve the

demand of the royal families for carved wood furniture. Jepara,

in addition to serving the domestic market, is well connected to

markets in the USA, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia.

Giving something back to the communityFishpools has named Teens Unite Fighting Cancer and Nordoff Robbins as its

charity partners for this year’s Family Values project. The Waltham Cross,

Hertfordshire, retailer hopes to raise at least £5,000 for the two charities and has

started the ball rolling with a £2,000 donation.

‘Our Family Values programme represents our commitment to give something

back to the people who live and work where we do and we’ve joined forces with

two brilliant charities to help us do just that,’ says Simon Fishpool, Fishpools md.

Broxbourne based charity Teens Unite Fighting Cancer is dedicated to improving

the lives of people aged 13-24, with cancer and other life limiting illnesses. The

charity runs regular fun days out and provides long-term support for teens whether

they are undergoing treatment or in remission. The charity has also recently

opened the first specialist respite care centre for those aged 13-24 in the UK.

Nordoff Robbins is a specialist music charity, dedicated to transforming the lives

of vulnerable children and adults across the UK. It provides around 50,000 music

therapy sessions each year to help people struggling with a range of challenges

including autism, learning difficulties, dementia, mental health problems, stroke,

brain injury and depression.
