Interactive Notebooks in the middle school Social
Studies classroom

Purpose statements
The implementation of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) at my school.
Interactive notebooks were required in Math and Science class.
To find out what impact if any interactive notebooks would have on student organization, motivation, and achievement in a Social Studies classroom.
Research Questions
• What impact do interactive notebooks have on student motivation in Social Studies?
• What impact do interactive notebooks have on student organizational skills?
• What impact do interactive notebooks have on student achievement in Social Studies?
Methodology
• Interactive notebooks based on a right side-left side- right side format.
• Students were provided with all materials.
• Reviews at the beginning of each day in their “study groups”.
• Right side- Info coming out from kids
• Left side- Info going to the kids
Quantitative and Qualitative Data

Results
Interactive notebooks had a positive impact on students’ perception of Social Studies and confidence in the Social Studies classroom.
Interactive notebooks had a positive impact on student achievement and performance in Social Studies classroom
Students believed notebooks.
Interactive notebooks will be required in all Social Studies classrooms next year.
