The University of Amsterdam’s Institute for Dutch Language Education (INTT) offers a year-long programme of intensive Dutch language courses to highly educated foreigners who are non-native speakers. Targets This programme is designed to teach the level of language proficiency needed for passing the Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal. Those who pass this exam will be considered to have the necessary language skills to participate in higher education in the Netherlands. Those not interested in taking the state exam are also free to participate in the programme. For more information about the exam please visit www.staatsexamennt2.nl. Course Levels Level 1 (CEFR A1-A2) For those who have no (or almost no)

knowledge of Dutch and are incapable (or almost incapable) of making themselves understood. The language of instruction is English and Dutch.

Level 2 (CEFR A2-B1) For those who can: understand sentences and frequently

used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography);

communicate in very simple Dutch about familiar and routine matters, provided the other person talks slowly and is prepared to help;

write some sentences about familiar and routine matters.

Level 3 (CEFR B1-B2) For those who can: understand, with some difficulty,

clearly spoken standard Dutch concerning familiar matters, e.g. can understand the

central topic of many TV programmes when the delivery is relatively slow and clear;

understand simple written texts, e.g. small articles in Spits or Metro;

generally communicate, with the help of others, in simple Dutch.;

produce simple texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest (with many mistakes).

Level 4 (CEFR B2) For those who can: understand, with some difficulty,

general Dutch, e.g. can understand most TV news and current affairs programmes;

understand, with some difficulty, written texts about a wide range of topics, e.g. articles in a daily paper like De Volkskrant (frequently referencing a dictionary);

communicate relatively fluently with native speakers (whilst still making quite a few mistakes);

produce written texts about various topics using complex sentences (whilst still making quite a few mistakes).

Set-up of the yearly programme The year-long programme consists of approximately 350 hours of lessons. The total number of study hours (lessons + self-study) amounts to about 800 hours per year. A student must spend 16 hours per week doing self-study. All lessons are given during the daytime.

April 14 – June 6, 2014 2, 4 7 weeks, 3 days, 4 hours * There are no classes in the week between September 20 and September 30, 2013. ** There are no classes in the week between February 21 and March 3, 2014. *** Students who understand a small amount of Dutch have the option to join level 1 from the second part of the course (September 30, 2013 or March 3, 2014). Classroom activities listening to audio fragments; watching video fragments; discussion of written texts; preparatory exercises for communicative

tasks; studying Dutch grammar with follow-up

exercises; speaking and writing exercises; conversation. Location Lectures are given in the P.C. Hoofthuis, the main building of the Faculty of Humanities. This modern building, situated right in the centre of Amsterdam, is equipped with a large language laboratory and video and computer facilities and offers all possibilities to integrate language and culture.

Fees The fee covers the lessons and various collections of reading, listening, speaking and writing exercises. It does not cover textbooks or the fee for the NT2-II exam. Intake No later than two weeks before the beginning of a term, the INTT organises a meeting with new participants to assess their level of proficiency in Dutch. Participants who pass the examination at the end of their course may continue with the course at the next level without assessment.
