Instructions for Authors The Healthcare Management FORUM Gestion des soins de santC is published by the Foundation of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. The College is a personal member- ship associationfor senior healthcare executivesin Canada com- mitted to improvement in the practice of healthcare administration. One mechanism toward this end is to encourage analyticreflection on the rapidly changing practice of healthcare administration. This rigorous reflection will link theory, re- search and practice by encouraging practitioners and academics to share their insights in a manner that generalizes conclusions beyond the immediate experience. Insights from practice must be related to what we know from theory and research; similarly, insights from research and theory must be directly related to practice. Co-operative ventures between practitioners and academics are encouraged. The FORUM will consider manuscripts in English or French on any aspect of healthcare management that indicates reflec- tive, analytic thinking as outlined above. The FORUM accepts four types of manuscripts: Opinions, Executive Briefings, Original Articles and Communications. Opinions will allow authors to extrapolate personally on issues of interest. The Ex- ecutive Briefing section will provide synopsized background in- formation, current thinking and substantive projections on topics of current concern in healthcare management. Original Articles will include practice reports, research reports, or other analytic work related to the FORUM objectives. The Com- munications section will print short reports on research or field projects in process. Opinions are expected to be about five typewritten double- spaced pages in length (1,500 words). Executive Briefings and Original Article manuscripts should run 10 double-spaced pages (3,000 words) exclusive of references, tables or figures. Communications are limited to 500 words. Briefings and Original Articles should be prefaced by an informativeprecis of 100words. Manuscripts should be typed (never in italics or all in capital letters) double-spaced, on paper approximately22x 28 cm, with 4-cm wide margins on all sides. Pages should be numbered con- secutively starting with the title page, which should include the authors’ full names and most recent affiliation. We ask for an original and four copies or additional printouts of the text and five camera-ready copies of all tables and figures. Please retain a copy to make revisions if necessary. To facilitate the anonymous peer review process, do not have the authors’names on pages other than one copy of the title page, and place all ac- knowledgements on a separate page. We edit manuscripts on an IBM-compatible word processing system and are able to process manuscripts directly from the author’s diskette. The editorial process will be expedited if you send us an MS DOS format 5 1/4-inchdiskette ASCII file of the manuscript along with the requested hard copies. Accepted manuscripts will be edited not only to conform with the FORUM’S style and for correctness of grammar, syntax and punctuation, but also for clarity. References should be numbered consecutively as they appear in the text and should be listed in the same order at the end of the article. Preferences for common reference types are il- lustrated by the following examples: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Book Evans, R.G. 1984. Strained Mercy: The Economics of Canadian Health Care. The Healthcare Management FORUM Gestion des soins de santC is published by the Foundation of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. The College is a personal member- ship association for senior healthcare executives in Canada com- mitted to improvement in the practice of healthcare administration. One mechanism toward this end is to encourage analytic reflection on the rapidly changing practice of healthcare administration.

Briefings and Original Articles should be prefaced by an informative precis of 100 words.

Manuscripts should be typed (never in italics or all in capital letters) double-spaced, on paper approximately 22x 28 cm, with 4-cm wide margins on all sides. Pages should be numbered con- secutively starting with the title page, which should include the authors’ full names and most recent affiliation.
