I enjoyed the energy of the jury session and more importantly the opportunity for designers to present their own schemes, this is an excellent platform to communicate the overall vision and the context of the projects.

What a first year! We had such a range of entries from all over the world, which were truly inspiring. For me the important thing about Inside is that were reinventing what an awards programme can be. Rather than judging entries behind closed doors, we invited designers to come to Barcelona and present their own projects in person to a panel of judges, as well as to an audience of peers. The idea was about creating dialogue, about sharing ideas. Not about tearing work apart, but celebrating ideas from around the globe, looking for connections. The energy and buzz in the hall was palpable. Interestingly more than half our winners are from the Asia Pacific region. Is this the beginning of a paradigm shift? If so, Inside is about making sure that there is conversation between East and West, giving a forum to ongoing dialogue internationally, and making connections between those who design the exteriors of buildings and interiors.

The Waterhouse is a four-storey, 19-room boutique hotel in a former Japanese Army building dating back to the 1930s. Its architectural expression poignantly articulates the contrast of old and new, with additions built over the existing structure in Cor-Ten steel. The interiors encourage notions of inside and out, public and private inspired by the essence of traditional lane houses. The designers pride themselves in having a good understanding of how to preserve historical buildings in the proper way.

Super Jury chair Ilse Crawford summed up the judges decision, which proved to be challenging: It was a tough call, which came down to two with both schemes addressing how to preserve the past for the future in different ways.

First prize was given to The Waterhouse because the project demonstrated its potential to influence a new respect for urban revitalization, as well as the future economic value of re-using the old, when skillfully delivered.

Well executed throughout, the judges stated that the projects wit and courage made it worthy of the ultimate World Interior of the Year accolade.

It was an exhilarating experience to have the opportunity to present our work and be engaged with many designers that have a passion for architecture and interior design. It was especially rewarding for our relatively young practice to win the grand award in a field of many competent entries. Lyndon Neri, Principal, Neri&Hu

In Shanghais South Bund District, Table No.1 occupies the ground floor of a 19-room boutique hotel. Blurring the boundary between public and private, a dining area sits between courtyard and sidewalk, offering views up into the hotels private realm. Custom-designed furniture includes long wooden tables made from wood recycled from the existing roof.

The judges described the project showing a very good strategy for colonising public space. Both open to extension and to a variety of uses in a context where the public realm is diminished.

The conversion of this three-storey house into offices and residential space exploits the double-helix principle in the design of a new staircase that twists and warps to resolve the existing buildings irregular floor levels. The threshold between new and old is further articulated by benches, peep holes and shelving.

The project designer said, If you know Malta, you will know that it is difficult not to touch history. Many of their projects are restoration and adaptive re-use schemes. The judges said: this project was a strong scheme where the winner pushed boundaries to the limit.

Alberto Miceli-Farrugia, Principal of Architecture Project described winning the award as very strange, but very satisfying, not just for myself but for all the team that worked on the project.

As an important community project, openness and transparency were key consideration in the design of Sowetos new Football Training Centre. This resulted in innovative responses to safety and security, including an artist-designed chain link fence that surrounds the site. Elsewhere a limited palette of raw materials concrete, stone, timber and steel, creates a sense of warmth. Designer and creative director of RUF Project Sean Pearson described the project as an intense but fun and worthwhile experience.

The judges commented: this project is a powerful gesture for an impoverished community, communicating a proud sense of soweto as a special place. the scheme displays a sensible, malleable and interesting interior, done in an amazingly short period. highly sustainable with re-used materials, the project displays a remarkable transformation of sketches into symbols.

Sean Pearson, Director, RUF Project, said:Its an honour to have been shortlisted alongside such established and talented architects, and to have won is really quite a boost to what we are trying to do. We are quite a small practice, and to have our first built project win in the World Festival of Interiors is quite something.

Out of public view since 2004, the V&As London Ceramics Collection is back on display, featuring more than 26,000 objects. Senior Designer, Jeroen Luttikhuis of Opera Amsterdam said that the project was all about density and multitude. The collection is set in four vitrines, two circular and two elongated, that measure up to 30 metres long and more than 3.5 metres high. Standing free in the space, they are distinguished by their simplicity.

The judges said: With this category we were trying to find one strong idea behind the design the ability to limit the confusion of too many ideas. this project presented one strong idea and was executed really well from the materials to its function and lighting.

The boutique hotel fronts the Huangpu River and looks across at the gleaming Pudong skyline and reflects the industrial past of this working dock. The hotels interior, which is expressed through a blurring and inversion of the interior and exterior, as well as between the public and private realms, creates a disorienting yet refreshing spatial experience for the hotel guest who longs for an experience out of the ordinary five-star hospitality outfit.

The judges decision was shaped by a view that the project showed daring and provocative vision executed in incredible detail, a great scheme, where public and private spaces are cleverly woven together.

Inhabiting six converted shop-house units, Ministry of Designs studio accommodates the entire office on a single floor. Encouraging innovation and creativity, space was designed without hierarchy or barriers. A series of mixed areas are positioned along catwalks including a gallery, meeting space, open-plan desks, hot-desk discussion zones and a library.

The judges said: all spaces were incredibly well thought out creating a highly functional space that has made a big impact on the way people work in the space.

Colin Seah, Director of Design at Ministry of Design said Its a real privilege to be a part of the inaugural Inside awards and to bring home an award is absolutely thrilling especially when we were amidst so many great designers whom we respect. It was great exposure to have direct access to so many interesting international designers. the jury panelists were very illustrious and brought great credibility to the festival.

In winning, we feel extremely thrilled to be endorsed at such an international level and also feel privileged to share our work with fellow designers whom we hold in high regard.

r e s i d e n t i a lThis nineteenth-century warehouse is now a one-bedroom residence. With two street frontages at different levels, a new front door is located in the former loading dock. Internally the level change creates a dynamic relationship between double height living room and elevated kitchen. everything existing was to remain white and everything added to the space was to be black, said Ian Moore, Founding Director of Ian Moore Architects of his striking scheme. The judges described the project as Brilliant, obsessive, magnificent effort to turn a crumbling structure into beautiful home.

The aesthetic of this menswear store uses antique and reclaimed pieces to create a sense of charm and timelessness. With two rooms one a warm and light hue, the other a darker and more enveloping distressed artworks decorate walls, vintage lampshades create a chandelier and clothes are displayed on hand-cast concrete plinths. Designers Hannah Plumb and James Russell both have backgrounds in fine art and sculpture, which can clearly be seen in the handmade detailing.

The judges said: this project struck us with its nature, simplicity and honesty great attention to detail.

James Russell and Hannah Plumb, Directors, JAMESPLUMB commented: We feel really honored that our work has been recognised, and extremely flattered to win especially as after watching the rest of our category present. We were really impressed by the diversity and scale of other projects.

the festival was a really wonderful opportunity to meet fellow designers and architects from all over the world, everyone seemed genuinely interested and supportive of each others projects, and the festival felt more like a celebration rather than a sword fight...

the talks were really interesting, and the calibre of the judges and their approachability after the presentations was really warming.

We look forward to witnessing the Festival as it grows from strength to strength.

The extension of Wellington Airport had two overarching requirements: to provide a memorable experience and to have an edgy design. Inside space unfolds on numerous levels, encouraging and enabling exploration. Deep window seats offer very specific vantage points, providing a significant alternative to the large areas experienced in the existing main terminal building. the brief was to divide opinion by the design, said Studio Pacifics Director, Nick Barratt-Boyes.

The judges said: We were impressed that the project celebrated the local heritage through symbolic design that didnt adhere to the stereotype of a typical transport building.

Nick Barratt-Boyes, Director, Studio Pacific, said: It was great to participate in the event and contribute to the diversity of design on stage there. We are absolutely delighted to be one of the winners and it is encouraging to see contemporary new Zealand design and other pacific-rim designs being recognised internationally.

  • The standard of work presented at the festival was incredibly high across the board, so much so that in some instances judges felt that, as well as deciding on an overall winner, recognition be given to projects that they saw as outstanding in their field.

The Hoxton Hotel is a design hotel in Shoreditch, London. With a view to future expansion, Project Orange was approached to design a new concept room to further develop the existing brand of urban comfort. Since the mid-nineties much gentrification has occurred within Shoreditch, however the urban fabric remains gritty.

The designers reflected, our interpretation of the context lead us to propose a bedroom set within an aged and distressed building fabric with a mixture of newer, more luxurious artefacts placed within it. The result is a room that has a story it feels authentic and personal a million miles away from a standard hotel room.

Switch by Yuko Shibata Office, Japan, was awarded highly commended by the judges. The project is the interior design of a single home office. In this case, where the office and the living area share the same space, the designers felt it was important to include some form of switch, which transforms the environment. In both spaces, the switch took the form of a large door.

The scheme was described by the judges as, a highly original essay in facing the challenge of shifting boundaries between a home and work life a library! a wonderful spatial tactic achieved with so little.

Winners of the Display category, the Inside super jury also felt that The Ceramic Study Galleries should be recognised as a highly commended project in the festivals overall accolade of World Interior of the Year.

The judges concluded that the galleries were, a brave, brilliant solution that brings the collection to a wide and potentially conservative audience but inspires them. a truly exciting project.
