Learning to extend our finances until the end of the month is a common part of lives. When we are really stretched, we get creative and “MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.” We patch holes, add safety pins, rinse out stains and rotate outfits when we have to.

This ability to create is a God given gift in all of us – ingenuity. The word ingenuity is Latin for ‘innate virtue’. Webster’s says it is ‘the quality of being cleverly inventive or resourceful; inventiveness’. In layman’s terms it means, using what you have to get what you need.

As a 5th grader I was intrigued by a documentary shown to our class about a lady named Bonnie Consolow. She was born without arms and had taught herself to do everything with her legs and feet. She dressed herself, drove herself, shopped, cooked dinner, she even had a baby and cared for him. She displayed ingenuity in a dynamic way. Learning about her struggles and how she managed around them, it makes me ask myself, “What excuse do I have not to try?”

As an adult, I read about the widow in 1 Kings 17 who was visited by Elijah, the Prophet. She was down to her last bit of food she had left for herself her son, but she was asked to even give that away. The widow began to take inventory of what she had and became afraid for her life. Elijah encourages her that if she will use what she has; God will supply her with what she needs!

What do you have right now? INGENUITY. Take a look at the word and find the genius in you. Use what’s in the storehouse of your mind, look at your talents and gifts and start where you are! Don’t be afraid, God is already ahead of you preparing for your next steps!

Let’s take inventory of what we have now:

SAY THIS OUT LOUD!“For the gifts of God and His call can never be withdrawn.”

Romans 11: 29 NLT

SAY THIS OUT LOUD!“What shall we say about such wonderful things as these. If God is for me,

who can be against me!” Romans 8:31 NLT

First, assess yourself. Get to know who you are really are. What kind of learning style do you have, what are your natural gifts, what credentials do you possess that can benefit someone else.

Be Encouraged! God put ingenuity in all of us so it’s in you also! YOU ARE UNIQUE and you are important to Him. What God puts in you, no one can take out. Lend yourself to thinking upwards. We all have assignments and our gifts to complete them come from Him.

Second, use what you have. Being a good steward with the gifts that you already have are important to God. Don’t expect God to give you a new assignment if you haven’t finished the last thing He gave you. Eliminate things in your life that cause you to waste your time and thoughts.

Be Encouraged! God will keep us focused on His will. He is able to make our plans succeed. When you feel like you can’t figure it out, rely on your ingenuity to guide your thoughts towards the goal!

SAY THIS OUT LOUD!“ For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity,

but of power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT

There is genius inside of you! Be Encouraged!

Third, DON’T BE AFARID! Fear stops us and freezes our progress. Combat fear with facing it. For example, the next time you become afraid, stop and face it right at the moment. Start with small things to overcome. It could be speaking up for what is right or cutting off an healthy relation-ship. Most of our fears are centered on what other people will think of us.

Be Encouraged! Using your ingenuity towards God’s requests may take some getting used to. This is not necessarily an overnight process but it does happen one night at a time. Don’t go to bed with out reading at least something that makes you think towards ingenuity, something greater than yourself.
