INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

Review articles. Concise and comprehensive arti-cles devoted to reviewing a certain area or topic.

Brief communications. Brief commentary and/orselected patient reports of special interest. Articles inthis section are limited to 500 words (without abeginning abstract), 1 or 2 illustrations, and 6 care-fully selected references.

Forum: Letters to the editor. Brief letters or notes tothe Editor regarding published material or informa-tion of timely interest.

Editorials. Brief, substantiated commentary onspecial subjects.

Special Reports. This section will appear periodi-cally when pertinent and will include items of specialinterest on a particular subject.

Case Reports. All case reports are published on-line only on the Journal’s website. Case reportsmay include video clips and four-color illustrations,which are published online at no cost to the au-thor. Video clips should be submitted as an .mpg,.mov, .avi, or .gif file which should not exceed thesize of 10 MB. Case reports must be submitted forreview electronically. Please refer to the journal homepage—www.mosby.com/jase—for complete submis-sion requirements.

Preparation of Manuscripts. Only original manu-scripts will be considered for publication. Manuscriptsmust be 20 pages or less in length, including figures andtables. Correct preparation of the manuscript by theauthor will expedite the reviewing and publication pro-cedures. Please note the following requirements and theinstructions for online submission at http://ees.elsevier.com/jase.

The article, including all tables, should be format-ted in Microsoft Word. The use of appropriate sub-headings throughout the body of the text (Methods,Results, and Discussion sections) is required. Leg-ends for figures and tables should appear after thereference list. Illustrations must also be submittedelectronically as separate files (not embedded). Filespecifications are listed below in “Illustrations.”

Style. Manuscripts must conform to acceptable En-glish usage. Standard abbreviations should be usedconsistently throughout the article. Unusual orcoined abbreviations should be spelled out the firsttime they appear in the text and followed in paren-theses by the abbreviation. Consult the latest editionsof the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual, TheChicago Manual of Style by The University of Chi-cago Press, or the Manual of Style by the AMA forcurrent usage.

Pagination. Begin numbering with the title page aspage 1, the summary page as page 2, and continue

throughout the text, references, figure legends, andtables. Page numbers should appear in the upperright-hand corner of the pages.

Title page. The title page should include the title,authors’ full names, highest earned academic degrees,and institutional affiliations and locations. Designateone author as correspondent (provide address, busi-ness and home telephone numbers, and e-mail ad-dress) to receive correspondence, galley proofs, andreprint requests.

Summary. Each article should be accompanied byan abstract/summary not to exceed 150 words, typeddouble-spaced on a separate page.

References. References must be numbered seriallyin the order in which they appear in the text and typeddouble-spaced on a separate page. Reference list for-mat should conform to “Uniform Requirements forManuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals”(Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36-47). Abbreviationsfor journal names should conform to those in Cumu-lated Index Medicus.

Unpublished data and personal communicationsmay be cited in the text but should not be listed asreferences. Authors are responsible for the accuracyof their references.

Illustrations. Illustrations should be numbered inthe order of their mention in the text. Special ar-rangements for 4-color illustrations must be madewith the Editor. The Publisher will invoice the authorfor the final costs for color separation and printing of4-color illustrations after the article is published.

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic for-mat. All images should be at least 5 inches wide.Images should be provided in either TIF or EPSformat, per the instructions for online submission athttp://ees.elsevier.com/jase. Macintosh or PC is ac-ceptable. Graphics software such as Photoshop andIllustrator (not presentation software such as Power-Point, CorelDraw, or Harvard Graphics) should beused in the creation of the art. Color images need tobe CMYK, at least 300 DPI, and be accompanied by

a digital color proof, not a color laser print or colorphotocopy. Note: This proof will be used at press forcolor reproduction. Gray scale images should be atleast 300 DPI accompanied by a proof. Combina-tions of gray scale and line art should be at least 1200DPI accompanied by a proof. Line art (black andwhite or color) should be at least 1200 DPI with aproof.

For best possible reproduction, avoid using shad-ing or dotted patterns; if unavoidable, submit thistype of illustration in the form of a glossy photographfor best results. Use thick, solid lines and bold, solidtype. Place lettering on a white background; avoidreverse type (white lettering on a dark background).Typewritten or freehand lettering is unacceptable. Alllettering must be done professionally and should bein proportion to the drawing, graph, or photograph.Do not send original art work, x-ray films, or electro-cardiographic strips. Any special instructions regard-ing sizing should be clearly noted.

If the manuscript is accepted, 1 glossy copy of eachillustration must be submitted to the Editorial Office(see mailing address above). Glossies should bemarked lightly on the back with the author’s lastname and figure number and an arrow to indicate thetop edge.

Figure legends. The legends should be typed dou-ble-spaced on a separate page and numbered to cor-respond with the figure. If an illustration has beenpreviously published, the legend must give full creditto the original source.

Tables. Tables should be double-spaced through-out, including column heads, data, and footnotes.Each table must be submitted on a separate page. Aconcise title describing the table’s content should besupplied for each table. All columns must carry con-cise headings describing the data in the column. If atable or any data therein has been previously pub-lished, a footnote to the table must give full credit tothe original source. Tables should be self-explanatoryand should supplement, not duplicate, the text. Typeall footnotes immediately below the table and defineabbreviations.

Human research. Authors should identify that in-formed consent was obtained when applicable.Thereby the manuscript should also include the no-

tation that the study was approved by the institu-tional committee on human research.

Permissions. Direct quotations, tables, or illustra-tions that have appeared in copyrighted material mustbe accompanied by written permission for their usefrom the copyright owner and original author alongwith complete information as to source. Photographsof identifiable persons must be accompanied bysigned releases showing informed consent. Articlesappear in both the print and online versions of thejournal, and wording of the letter should specifypermission in all forms and media. Failure to getelectronic permission rights may result in the imagesnot appearing in the online version.

Reprints. Single reprints may be obtained from theauthor. Reprint order forms will be sent to authors asarticles are published.
