NOTE :-1. The result of RET and all information regarding admission shall be displayed on the notice board and Vishwavidyalaya

website. The selected candidates will be informed by registered post. However, Vishwavidyalaya will not be responsiblefor any postal delay. Hence, the candidates are advised to be in touch with the concerned department.

2. RET is only the eligibility test for Ph.D. course. The eligibility of the candidates will be valid for current acadmicsession only. The candidates who have qualified the RET will be called for interview to discuss their research areabefore the Departmental Research Committee (DRC).

3. Final selection of the candidate shall be made on the basis of discussion about research area of his/her interestand interview. The seat shall remain vacant in the concerned subject, if any candidate is not found suitable evenafter the above process.

Establishment and ObjectivesThe Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya was established

in 1902 by the martyr Swami Shraddhanandji Maharaj. TheVishwavidyalaya was established to provide an option ofimparting education in the national language, discouragingthe English system of education in India based on the educationpolicy of Lord Macaulay. It aimed at creating a viable environmentfor students for higher learning and research in the areasof Vedic literature, Indian philosophy, Indian culture andliterature and modern subjects.

Since its inception, the Arya Samaj has been advocatingfor women education. In order to shape this dream, theKanya Gurukula Mahavidyalaya (K.G.M.) Dehradun wasestablished in 1923 by Late Acharya Ramdevji. Later theKanya Gurukula Mahavidyalaya, Haridwar was also establishedin 1993 for Post Graduate Classes. The basic task beforethe Vishwavidyalaya is to enhance the physical, moral andintellectual strength of both girls and boys and thus to makethem ideal citizens, by giving them education of ancientand modern subjects, without any discrimination of casteand creed and untouchability on the pattern of Gurukulasystem of education which emphasizes healthy and harmoniousteacher - taught relationship. The Vishwavidyalaya is situatedabout 5 km in south from Haridwar Railway Station.

Recognizing the objectives and services of thisinstitution, Government of India in June 1962 conferredon it the status of Deemed to be University under UGCAct of 1956, Article 3, for imparting P.G. education inVedic literature, Sanskrit literature, Indian philosophy,Hindi literature, English literature, Psychology, Mathsand Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology. Besidesthese subjects, a number of modern subjects like Physics,Chemistry, Computer Science, Microbiology, Zoology &Environmental Science, MCA, Engineering, Ayurvigyanand Management Studies etc. have also been started.In May 2002 National Assessment & Accreditation Council(NAAC) visited the Vishwavidyalaya and having been influencedby its natural, unpolluted environment, academic ambience,grand library and museum of international repute, awardedFour Star (****) Status to it. Needless to say that allthe degrees conferred by the Vishwavidyalaya are recognisedby the Govt. of India/University Grants Commission. TheVishwavidyalaya is a pride member of the Association ofIndian Universities (A.I.U.) and Association of CommonwealthUniversities.

THE LIBRARY

The Vishwavidyalaya library has its own history whichbegins with the foundation of this institution. This library, whichhas completed its more than 112 years, is a rich depositoryof thousands of ancient manuscripts and rare books. It isequipped with one lakh books on Vedic literature, Aryanliterature, Comparative Studies, Science, Management andTechnology. Vishwavidyalaya library comprises a richcollection of Vedic & Sanskrit literature, Indian philosopsy,Aryan literature, Ancient history & culture together with leadingmodern subjects. Besides this main library, there aredepartmental libraries also to facilitate the P.G. studentsadequately. The Kanya Gurukula Campus, Dehradun and theKanya Gurukula Campus, Haridwar also have theirindependent libraries which are equipped with adequatenumber of books. More than 400 International ResearchJournals of different subjects are available in the library bycomputer networking under U.G.C. INFONET programme.Faculty of Engineering & Technology and Faculty of MedicalSciences & Health also have their own rich library also. Bookson Pharmacy and Ayurved are available in suffcient numbers.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUMThe Vishwavidyalaya is embelished with an

archaeological museum, which possesses a valuablecollection of coins, paintings, sculptures and arms.

U.G.C. aided computer centre was established in theVishwavidyalaya in the academic year 1987-88. This centre isacitively engaged in imparting computer education to thestudents besides making the activities of the Vishwavidyalayacomputerised. Internet facility is also available at the computercentre. The various departments of the Vishwavidyalaya andthose of the Kanya Gurukula Campus Haridwar and Dehradunhave also their own computer labs with computer systems basedon modern technology in order to cater to the needs of thestudents.

V SAT sanctioned under UGC-INFONET programmehas been established in the computer centre. Internet facilityis provided in the computer centre through V SAT.

CORPORATE AFFAIRS AND OUTREACH CELL

Corporate affairs and outreach cell is established inthe Vishwavidyalaya. This cell provides plateform to organizecampus interviews for the students of various courses byinviting reputed companies. However, the cell has noresponsibility to recruit them in the companies. It is to bementioned that for the last several years many students gotemployment in reputed companies through the placement cell.

The SC/ST cell has been established in theVishwavidyalaya under xth plan. HOW TO APPLYApplication form, Information Brochure and Rules &

Regulations for Research Entrance Test (RET)/DirectAdmission (RET Exempted) for admisson to Ph.D. programmecan be obtained from the office of Registrar, Gurukula KangriVishwavidyalaya, Haridwar by paying Rs. 1000/- in cash orby sending a demand draft of Rs. 1050/- to Registrar, GurukulaKangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar. The demand draft shouldbe in favour of "Registrar, Gurukula KangriVishwavidyalaya'' payable at Haridwar. Application form canalso be downloaded from www.gkv.ac.in

Completely filled in application form for entrance test/Direct Admission shall be submitted to the office of Registrar,Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar. Applicationform downloaded from website will be accepted alongwithdemand draft of Rs. 1000/-.Note:-1. No examination fee shall be paid by the candidate

while submitting application form.

2. Write the name of the main subject (with code)applied on the top of the envelop and your name andmain subject (with code) on the back of the demanddraft while demanding application form.

3. Application/Test Fee shall neither be returned in anycase nor shall be transferred for any other course.

ADMISSION PROCEDUREAdmissions and registration to programmes leading

to Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in various subjects/disciplines ( Table-1) shall be done as per UGC norms andapproved by the Academic Council of the Vishwavidyalaya fromtime to time. The admission to the said programme shall be (i)through Research Entrance Test (RET) to be conducted by theVishwavidyalaya (ii) Direct admission without appearing in RET.

The Ph.D. programme will be allowed in thosesubjects only where Post-Graduate courses are being taughtin this Vishwavidyalaya. However, by the permisson givenearlier for subjects by the University Grants Commission, NewDelhi/Academic Council of GKV will continue. The subjectsapproved by Academic Council for Ph.D. programme shall becovered by these rules and regulations.

ELIGIBILITYA candidate holding Master's Degree from any

recognised University/Institution with at least 55% marks inthe main subject or an allied subject is eligible for the ResearchEntrance Test (RET) and registration for Ph.D. degree.Note:-(i) There shall be relaxation of 5% marks for SC/ST/ PWD

in the restriction of minimum marks.(ii) Candidate must check carefully and ensure that he/she

fulfills the minimum eligibility mentioned in the InformationBroucher and Rules & Regulations before submitting theapplication. If the candidate's eligibility is foundincomplete/incorrect at any stage during admissionprocess and after admission, his/her admission will becancelled for which he/she will be solely responsible.

Registration of the candicate for Ph.D. programme shallbe as follows:-(i) Through Research Entrance Test (RET)(ii) Direct Admission (without appearing in RET)l Research Entrance Test (RET)

A candidate possessing the minimum qualifications withthe requisite percentage of marks shall be eligible toappear in the research entrance test.

Max. Marks of Examination : 100 MarksDuration of Examination : 2 hrsMode: Objective / multiple - choice type questions

Note :-(i) The question paper shall contain100 questions from the

syllabus of concerned subject and each question shallcarry one mark.

(ii) Normally ten questions should be set from each unit ofthe prescribed syllabus of the concerned subject.

(iii) No scrutiny / re-evaluation of the answer books of thewritten test shall be allowed in any case.

(iv) There shall not be any negative marking.(v) The Qualifying Percentage of Marks would be 50%.

However, for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/SW candidates minimumqualifying percentage of marks shall be 45%.

Admission to the Ph.D. programme in each subjectshall be made after qualifying the RET against the availableseats in the concerned subject. While granting admission tothe candidate for Ph.D. programme, the reservation policyshall be followed as per rules.

l Direct Admission (Relaxation from RET)Those candidates who fulfil one of the followingrequirements may be considered for Direct Admissionto Ph.D. programme without appearing in ResearchEntrance Test (RET):-

(i) A candidate who has passed UGC/CSIR(NET-JRF)/NET/SLET /GATE examination.

(ii) A candidate who is a teacher fellowship holder selectedunder Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) /FacultyDevelopment Programme (FDP)/Faculty ImporvementProgramme (FIP).

Procedurel List of eligible candidates for admission to Ph.D.

programme shall be provided by the Registrar to theconcerned Head of Department.

l RET is only the eligibility test for Ph.D. programme.The eligibility of the candidates will be valid for currentacadmic session only. The candidates who qualify theRET will be called for interview to discuss their researcharea before the Departmental Research Committee(DRC) chaired by Head of the concerned department.

l Final selection of the candiadte shall be made on thebasis of discussion before the Departmenal ResearchCommittee about research area of his/her interest andinterview. The seat shall remain vacant in the concenedsubject, if any candidate is not found suitable even afterthe above process.

l The supervisor shall be allocated to the selected candidatein the meeting of Departmental Research Committeesubject to availability of seats and supervisor's consentonly, keeping in view of the specialization of thesupervisor as well as the research interest of the candidateduring his/her interview. The allocation/allottment ofsupervisor shall not be left to individual student or teacher.

l The same criteria for admission shall be aplicable toRET -exempted candidates.

The merit of the selected candidates shall be declared bythe Registrar and shall be displayed on the Vishwavidyalayawebsite, notice boards of the concerned departments and theRegistrar office. Selected candidates shall also be informed byregistered post. However, the Vishwavidyalaya shall not beresponsible for any postal delay.

ISSUE OF ADMIT CARD FOR ENTRANCE EXAM

l Admit card shall be despatched by registered post. If anycandidate does not receive the admit card before three daysof the date of entrance examination, he/she should contactthe Registrar office personally alongwith with documentaryevidences.

l In case a candidate does not receive his/her admit cardor loses it, he/she can get duplicate admit card by payingRs. 50/- in cash and submitting a passport sizephotograph.

l Vishwavidyalaya shall not be responsible for any postaldelay.

l If the information furnished by the candidate is found falsehis/her eligibility shall be cancelled even after issuing theadmit card.

RULES & REGULATIONS1. PRE - Ph.D. COURSE WORK

After being selected for Ph.D. programme a studentshall be required to undertake Course Work for aminimum period of one semester. The course workshall be treated as pre-Ph.D. preparation and shallinclude a course on research methodology whichincludes quantitative methods and computer applications.It may also consist of review of published work in therelevent field. The course shall also contain contentspertaining to that particular subject.

(i) It will be mandatory for each candidate to pass thiscourse to be conducted by the Vishwavidyalaya foreach subject.

(ii) There will be two papers of 100 marks each inpre-Ph.D. course work. In each paper there shall be endsemester examination of 70 marks. 30 marks in eachpaper shall be for internal assessment out of which 20marks shall be for written test (term paper) & 10 marksshall be given by the supervisor of the candidate on thebasis of literature survey, review of research papers,presentation & attendance etc. The written test of 20marks of each paper of internal assessment shall beevaluated by the concerned teaching faculty who hastaught the course.The minimum pass marks for thiscourse in each paper will be 40%.

(iii) The candidate shall be given maximum of two successiveattempts to pass this course.

(iv) If a candidate fails to pass this course in two attempts,his/her candidature for registration shall be cancelled.

(v) This course work shall be run by the concerneddepartment for male candidates in main campus andfor female candidates in Kanya Gurukula Campus,Haridwar/Dehradun.

The DRC will also monitor the research activities and researchprojects of the concerned department.3. PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION AND FUNCTION

OF THE RESEARCH DEGREE COMMITTEE (RDC)

(i) The eligible candidates for Ph.D. degree shall submittheir application/registration form alongwith a synopsisof the proposed topic in ten copies (typed/printed)recommended by his/her supervisor and forwarded byhead of department to the office of Registrar.

(ii) The candidate should write his/her name, completepostal address and contact number at the front page ofthe synopsis.

(iii) The application form and synopsis for Ph.D. registration,complete in all respects shall be placed before the RDCof the concerned subject. The notice of the meeting ofRDC shall be given to the candidate and the supervisorwell in advance by the convener of RDC so that thecandidate may defend the proposed topic in the meeting.It will be compulsory for the candidate to be presentbefore the RDC.

(vi) The candidate shall have to submit the migration certificatewithin three months from the date of admission in pre-Ph.D.course work. In case he/she fails to do so, he/she shall notbe permitted to appear in the pre-Ph.D. course workexamination.

4. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR Ph.D.SUPERVISOR AND CO-SUPERVISORA supervisor for guiding research shall be a permanent

faculty in a post-graduate teaching department of the subjectconcerned of this Vishwavidyalaya with the followingqualifications:-

(i) He must possess Ph.D. degee with at least three years ofregular teaching experience of P.G. classes in UGC scaleand should have at least three research papers published ina refereed journal. Existing supervisors shall continue tosupervise the Ph.D. thesis.

ORHe must possess Ph.D. degee with at least five yearsof regular Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF) experience (withdocumentary support) and should have at least fiveresearch papers published in refereed journal during PostDoctoral Fellow. Eligibility of such faculty member toact as supervisor shall be approved by RDC.

(ii) A co-supervisor from the other department of theVishwavidyalaya with the above qualifications may beappointed on the request of research scholar with theapproval of RDC. An eminent scholar from outside theVishwavidyalaya working in teaching /researchorganization having expertise in the subject of researchmay be permitted to act as co-supervisor with the priorapproval of RDC. The faculty members of GKV havingfive years regular teaching experience of under graduateclasses in UGC scale and have published atleast fiveresearch papers in refereed journal after the award ofPh.D. degree may be appointed as co-supervisor withthe approvel of RDC on the recommandation of theconcerend Head/Dean.

(iii) If a supervisor retires before the completion of theresearch work of his/her research scholar another facultymember of the department shall be appointed assupervisior by the Vice Chancellor after gettinginformation from the concerned Head of Department.

(iv) A teacher of the Vishwavidyalaya may become thesupervisor of the research scholar before three years ofhis/her retirement as on date of DRC of each year.

Note:-

(a) For each co-supervision one seat will be counted. Tobecome a supervisor/co-supervisor of a student of otherInstitutions/ University, a prior permission from GurukulaKangri Vishwavidyalaya authorities shall be mandatory.

(b) Reservation policy in case of seat allotment will beimplemented teacherwise.

(vi) After submission of Ph.D. thesis by a research scholar,the seat shall be treated as vacant under the concernedsupervisor.

5. SUBMISSION OF PROGRESS REPORT

(i) It shall be mandatory for each research scholar tosubmit his/her quarterly research progress reportcertified by his/her supervisor through the Head in theoffice of the Registrar.

(ii) Each research scholar shall have to deposit prescribedmonthly fee in the office of Registrar.

6. CANCELLATION OF REGISTRATION(i) The minimum and maximum period for submitting the

thesis shall be two years and five years respectively.This period shall be counted from the date of RDCmeeting. The Ph.D. registration shall automatically betreated as cancelled after five years.

(ii) If two successive quarterly research progress reportsof the research scholar along with monthly fee are notsubmitted in the Vishwavidyalaya office, the registrationof the research scholar may be cancelled. However,on the written request of the research scholar with therecommendation of the supervisor and forwarded byHOD, his/her case shall be referred to the DRC forfinal decision. This opportunity shall be provided onlyonce during the entire period of Ph.D. programme.

8. EVALUATION OF THE THESIS(i) The Ph.D. scholar shall submit a draft thesis within a

period of minimum two years and maximum five yearsfrom the date of RDC.

(ii) Ph.D. student shall publish at least one research paperin refereed journal and also have to present one researchpaper in National/International conference/seminarbefore the submission of the Ph.D. thesis. The candidateshall have to produce evidence for the same in the formof acceptance letter or reprints of the published paperand certificate of the paper presented in the conferenceseminar.

(iii) Prior to submission of the Ph.D. thesis. the student shallmake a pre-submission seminar of Ph.D. work / thesisin the department that may be open to all the facultymembers and research students, for getting feedbackand comments, which may be suitably incorporated intothe draft thesis on the advice of the supervisor.

(iv) After completion of the research work the researchscholar shall submit three typed copies of the thesiswith the certificate of the supervisor(Annexure-II) alongwith candidate's declaration(annexure-I) and forwarded by Head/Convenor of the RDC(Annexure -IV) to the office of the Registrar alongwithsummary and synopsis approved by RDC and fee etc.The certificate (Annexure-III) duly singned by co-supervisor is essential wherever co-supervisor has beenappointed.

Note:- Typed copies (both sides of the page) of the thesisshall be hard bound with cover page in brown colour.The candidate will also submit two soft copies of thethesis in CD one for Registrar office and the other forUGC.

(v) The research scholar shall submit a summary of Ph.D.thesis of about 10 to 15 pages and approved synopsisalongwith the thesis (three copies each).

(vi) The language of the thesis shall be Hindi/English/Sanskrit. But the thesis related to language/literatureshall essentially be written in the respective languageonly i.e. a thesis of Sanskrit subject in Sanskritlanguage, a thesis of Hindi subject in Hindi languageand a thesis of English subject in English language.
