Gateway from Beckhoff to AB via DeviceNet

This document explains how to connect a CX1500-B520 to an AB Controller and configure it for

the first time. This document assumes the reader is familiar with the TwinCAT System Manager

software and as well as the AB PLC software, RS Logix5000.

Procedure

Initialization

This procedure is completed in two steps. The first step is to configure the CX. The sec-

ond is to configure the AB DeviceNet scanner card along with RSLogix 5000. In this

example one DeviceNet cable with an external terminating resistor built into the connec-

tor is used.

TwinCAT Configuration

Open TwinCAT System Manager and open a new, blank session.

Then, select "Choose Target", and "Search Ethernet".

Once "Search Ethernet" is selected, select "Broadcast Search". This sends out a broad-

cast ADS search. All ADS devices on the network will reply. Select the CX, click "IP

Address", then "Add Route". Type your username and password. (By default the WINce

username is "Administrator" and the password is left blank. The WINxpe username is

"Administrator" and the password is: 1.) Click "Close", select the device, and click "OK".

Now scan in the IO. Right click on "I/O Devices" and choose "Scan Devices".

You will receive the following message: Hint: Not all devices will be found automatically.

Click "OK". Now choose the devices you wish to scan into the System Manager. This

exercise will only use the CX1500-B520 and the local CX1100. Click "OK".

Choose "Yes" to scan for boxes, then choose "OK" for the selected Baudrate.

After scanning devices the System Manager should look similar to the one below. The

CX1500-B520 will have 8 bytes in and 8 bytes out. This is important to know because

later it will be scanned with the Rockwell controller.

Activate this configuration and put this system into run mode.

TwinCAT setup is now complete.

Configuration of the Rockwell Devices

Open a new instance of RSNetworx and scan the network. Be sure the correct EDS file

has been downloaded.

Right click the unknown device and register it.

Right click the scanner card, click "properties", and "Download".

Save this file and open a new RSLogix 5000 session. Add a DeviceNet card and point it

to the RSNetworx file you just saved. Apply and go online.
