A MESSAGE FROM THE CRUCIBLE’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR By the time you get this catalog, more than 800 young people, ages 8-18, will start their annual summer takeover of The Crucible’s studios. Eight-year olds constructing giant cars (and racing them down a ten foot high track), ten-year-olds pouring hot metal (1,200 degrees!) into sand cast molds, preteen and teen ceramicists, glass blowers, blacksmiths, welders, and so much more will fill our 56,000-square-foot warehouse.

Our staff and faculty love the energy of young people being creative, learning new hands-on skills, and actively participating in this amazing industrial arts community. One of our favorite summer rituals is the Friday Gallery, when campers, staff, family, and friends meet up to see all the incredible art made by our youth students that week.

During each gallery, it’s common to overhear parents tell their kids, “I can’t believe you made that,” and “That is so amazing!” Whether the young folks are taking their first class, returning for another year, or spending a whole four weeks with us as a Fuego Youth Leader, The Crucible is committed to making sure everyone has a great experience—and to making the industrial arts more approachable and affordable to students of every skill level and age.

We know that making art, working with your hands, learning new skills, and being creative builds confidence, supports critical thinking skills, and energizes your mind like few other things can. This is just as true for adults as it is for youth, and it’s a great reason to look through this brand-new catalog—filled with great ways to build skills, create unique projects, and discover compelling classes that work for you.

Whether you want to construct a unique wooden toy, bind a leather journal, try out a new area, or deepen your expertise in a particular field, The Crucible team is eager to work with you.

Come be a part of The Crucible this year—we’re an amazing space to try out new ideas, learn something new, build connections between different disciplines, and give yourself the chance to experience the transformative power of making art.

Best,

Susan Mernit

ABOUT THE CRUCIBLEThe Crucible is a nonprofit organization and art school making the fine and industrial arts accessible for everyone of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Our work is centered in Oakland and the East Bay, where we offer classes and team builds in glass, metal, clay, wood, and more to over 8,000 people each year.

From welding to glass blowing to woodworking to jewelry-making to fire dancing, classes are designed to bring together beginners and experienced artists and fabricators in a

one-of-a-kind learning environment. We offer a low faculty-to-student ratio (often 1:6 or better) and a non-competitive, welcoming environment where people can learn and collaborate.

As part of celebrating and empowering Oakland and the neighborhood of West Oakland, we offer free programming, scholarships, and paid leadership opportunities for youth and adults who live locally and/or may not otherwise be able to access our studios. Over 60% of youth who engage with The Crucible participate at no cost.

CREATE PROGRAM

The CREATE Program has been monumental for me.

Being in a facility where I can make cross disciplinary artwork is few and far between. It has spurred a whole new evolution of my artwork. I can’t imagine any other place where I could do that. I’ve also met so many other artists, gotten advice about techniques, critique and feedback about my work, and encouragement to keep making and taking risks!

-Louisa, CREATE member

Through the CREATE Program, Louisa has ventured outside of the Hot Shop and into the Foundry, where she has been experimenting with blowing glass into bronze-casted work.

CREATE grants you full access to our studios, opening new doors to creative possibilities, community support, and limitless inspiration.

ADULT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

There is a lot of hectic energy at the shelter, so

it was really therapeutic to get a change of scenery and make something with my hands that I now wear every day. Knowing that I have the Jewelry studio to come back to and knowing that I have a safe space is really comforting. It means so much that the scholarships are in place for people who can’t afford it. It is rare to have an opportunity to explore something you really love in the classroom for free.

-Onye, AdultScholarship recipient

Thanks to a $50,000 donation from our generous supporters, we were able to expand our adult scholarship program to provide full scholarships to roughly 70 adults like Onye, who don't have the financial means to enroll in classes.

MIG WeldingENTRY LEVELMIG (metal inert gas) is the most common type of modern welding. It is a process by which a welding machine focuses electricity along a moving metal wire that is fed through a hose to a handheld torch. Student welders manipulate this torch as the electricity melts the wire and creates a weld. You will learn about the fundamentals of MIG welding, such as metallurgy, preparation, joints, technique, and safety. We will also cover plasma torch cutting. The class begins with a basic, technical welding exercise, then transitions into a small creative project. Come with ideas for a simple project.

YOUTH BLACKSMITHING

Each year, over 1,000 youth in Oakland public schools and Title 1 Public Schools visit The Crucible for a free, educational field trip about the possibilities of making fine and industrial art.

ÉTheCrucible.org/field-trips

YOUTH CLASSES

É TheCrucible.org/youth-classesIn our classes and camps, youth learn to take an idea, apply real-life STEAM lessons, and turn it into something tangible and completely their own.

Research shows that art students score higher on standardized tests, are less likely to be suspended, and feel more optimistic about attending college. Youth can apply what they’ve learned here—creative problem solving, scientific principles, and teamwork—at school and beyond.

Hands-on CreativityAt The Crucible, you learn by doing. Youth explore geometry by welding a customized bike frame, learn the basics of electricity by soldering a battery-powered beetle-bot, grapple with thermodynamics by gathering and shaping molten glass into colorful bowl.

Putting the “A” in STEAMBlending creativity and art into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) helps kids enjoy designing and building projects from their own imagination. The Crucible’s non-competitive environment lets youth choose their own direction, not just copy what the teachers demonstrate.

Something for Each AgeYouth classes are geared specifically for ages 8-11, ages 12-18, or ages 14-18. The Crucible offers weeklong camps during school breaks, after school classes, project-based school and private workshops, and the popular Bike Fix-A-Thon and Earn-A-Bike programs.

All youth must have a completed parental consent form and a completed medical authorization form on file before the first day of class. These forms must be submitted for every quarter at The Crucible. Youth cannot participate without these forms on file. No exceptions. Youth attending all day classes should bring a sack lunch. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Weapon making is not allowed in youth classes.

THE FUEGO PROGRAMMy art is a way of finding a happy place, but also to see the reality of the world

and what people go through. I want my art to show things that words can’t explain.

- Bri Media, Youth Fuego Leader in Glass Fusing

The Fuego Youth Leadership Program, The Crucible's signature high school youth program, serves between 10-15 youth per year, providing in-depth instruction and mentorship in welding, glass blowing, foundry, glass flameworking, jewelry, blacksmithing, and other industrial arts.

Since 2010, more than 70 youth have graduated from Fuego, two-year stipend program for 15-18 year olds.

Among all of our Fuego participants who provided demographic information, 79% were students of color and 80% were low-income.

85% are building successful careers in the trades or attending colleges, universities, and art schools.

GETTING OAKLAND ON BIKESAt our last Bike Fix-A-Thon, our neighbors Henry and his nephews got their bikes fixed for free, leaving with two safe, functioning bicycles. Free repairs include flat tire repair, wheel and tire work, brake and gear repair, chain repair, and seat and handlebar adjustments.

Last year alone, over 300 youth and adults walked out of our Bike Shop with a newly fixed up or gifted bike—giving 300 more Oakland residents the ability to get around safely and sustainably. We know what a safe bike can do for our neighbors, and studies show that extends beyond individual impact. Communities that bike are safer, healthier, and happier.

LAST YEAR: 293 bikes fixed for free at our Bike Fix-A-Thon events and weekly bike repair drop-in hours.

20 Oakland youth learned basic bike mechanics, repairing the bike they rode home in our Earn-A-Bike Program.

15 youth from our immediate community were gifted free bikes valued at over $5,000.
