UMAN Settlements offi-

la Bay Municipality and
members of the SouthAfri-
can Police Services (SAPS)
met residents of Mother-
well on Monday to discuss
ways in which housing delivery problems
facing the metro in this area can be solved.
This is following an act of illegal land inva-
sion by hundreds of angry Ward 54 residents
under the leadership of the SANational Civic
Organisation (SANCO) on Friday.
Acting against the court order issued to
them in December last year with regard to il-
legal land invasion, they brought building
materials and started building shacks on the
municipal land.
We are sick and tired of waiting for the
municipality that does not care! claimed the
residents, adding that if they did not get prop-
er answers this time around, they would not
vote in the 2014 National General Elections.
These people are renting backyard
shacks. They have been waiting for houses
since 1999 and have been put on the waiting
list but sent from pillar to post since then,
said local SANCO Chairperson and leader of
the invasion, Siphiwo Dayimani.

Dayimani said they want houses now and
will oppose any attempt by the municipality
to remove them from the area. This place is
near Coega IDZ, and it is near clinics and
schools for our children. Well resist any

the area, explained Dayimani.

The South African Police Service would
like to ask parents never to leave their chil-
dren alone during the day when they are at
work.
Also when a group of children are playing
ensure that there is always adult supervi-
sion. Parents must never let their children
go with a stranger or even with a family
member without their permission or super-
vision. Parents must always know where
their children are and with whom.
Over the first weekend in March, two in-
cidents of rape occurred in the Joubertina
and Humansdorp areas. In the first inci-
dent, a 4-year old victimwas taken from her
house by a family friend to Tietie se Kraal
in Twee Riviere, Joubertinawhere he raped
her. According to police information the
community heard her crying and called the
police.
The 17-year old suspect was arrested and
appeared in Joubertina Magistrate court
last week. The case was postponed until 18
March 2013 and he will remain in custody.
In the second incident, a 6-year old girl
was playing with other children at their
house while her parents were at work. It is
alleged the suspect, who is her uncle, raped
her in the house. The victim reported it to
her aunt who phoned the police. The sus-
pect (41), was arrested and appeared in the
Humansdorp Magistrate Court last week.

Our councillor (Aaron Nyikilana) does
not care. Our government does not care. The
ANC does not care, said Sholden Qashani
(72) who has never owned a house.
A disabled Bonelwa Vellem (43), who is a
lodger, complained that she has been on the
waiting list forever and does not know what
to do to get a house of her own.
Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron
has, however, denied allegations that themu-
nicipality does not care.
We care. We have been experiencing chal-
lenges with housing delivery, but it is not
true that we are not delivering houses. We
do! said Baron, adding that he sympathised
with the residents but asked that they exer-
cise a little patience as the municipality was
working around the clock to ensure that serv-
ices are delivered to the residents.
We are, however, against anymove by res-
idents to invade land illegally.
Well use the court order to thwart such a
move but would rather urge residents to
work with us in finding the best ways to deal
with the problems currently being experi-
enced, said Baron.

AN exhibition focusing on career guid-

The Working World Extravaganza

SMSPortal has partnered Early Inspiration
Training (EITP) in an attempt to combat
weak early childhood development in Walm-
er Township.
EITP is a training programme for teachers
designed for current or prospective practi-
tioners in underprivileged areas who deal di-
rectly with children aged between birth and
six years.
There are 48 early childhood development
centres in Walmer township, with 109 teach-
ers. SMSPortal funded 12 practitioners in
2012 andhas recently supported anadditional
24.
The training is also in collaboration with
KICK, a local NPO, which is looking to build
14 early childhood development centres in
Walmer township.
Lauren Stretch, from Early Inspiration
says, Not only do we create an awareness of
what to learn, but develop an understanding
of how children learn. Those enrolled need to
be working in early childhood centres, and
upon completion are recognised as top practi-
tioners in their community, proving out-
standing results in child development, ensur-
ing school readiness.
This highly interactive programme, which
costs R7 300, is run over eightmonths, and re-
quires up to three days in the classroom ena-
bling an understanding of child development
as well as acquiring the new skills.
Mentoring is also an important element of
the programme, and ensures guidance and
support for enhancing development, assess-
ment, community involvement, writing,
reading and understanding texts, as well as
interacting with young children.
Students never pay for the programme;
they are all funded by corporate organisa-
tions.
Early childhood education in the Eastern
Cape has been targeted as a priority sector.
There are 4.4 million babies and young chil-
dren in South Africa and according to the Ed-
ucation White Paper 5 on Early Childhood
Development (2001:2), 40% of young children
in South Africa are exposed to harsh living
conditions, neglect and a lack of stimulation.
As a result when children enter formal
schooling in grade one, the fundamental con-
cepts of learning are not developed, causing
children to drop out of school and in many
cases repeat grades. That is why trained
teachers within this sector are so important,
and something Early Inspiration aims to im-
prove.

NOSIVIWE Ntoni of Motherwell in Port
Elizabeth is a young ladywith big dreams.
PE Express Indaba was impressed by
this lass from Inkqu Street, NU12 reciting
her poetry at KQ FM.
Nosiviwe chooses her words wisely to
communicate a message which
she says comes from the heart.
I like reading the bible and
it is from this book that I getmy
inspiration, said Nosiviwe,
who is also inspired by poets
and musicians like Lelethu
Poetic Soul Mahambehlala
and mama Jessica Mban-
geni. The duo, she said, speak
their mind to touch the nerve.
The 22 year-old Nosiviwe,
whowas born inKwaKoni near
East London, passed matric at
Good Hope High School three
years ago.
She writes more, she ex-
plained, when she is stressed
by this lifes challenges espe-
cially about being at home do-
ing nothing whereas Ive got
this dream of studying and
making it in life.
After passing matric Nosivi-
we, who wanted to study theol-
ogy, was enrolled to do Intro-
duction to Business Studies at
Lovedale College but onlyman-
aged one semester because of
lack of finance, she said.
My dreams of becoming an
ordained pastor are stalled for
now but I will continue preach-
ing and praising God through
poetry and song, said Nosivi-
we, a member of the Seventh
Day Adventist Church.
Ive been to Fort Hare Radio Station in
Alice, Mdatsane FM and recently KQ FM
to show my talents. Soon, Ill be going to
UmhloboWenene FM to say to South Afri-

help me realise my dream, if anyone out

NELSON Mandela Bay actor, writer and di-
rector Monde Wani will present a stand-up
comedy at Way of Life Christian Centre in
KwaMagxaki, Port Elizabeth on Friday 22
March and Masakhisizwe Community Re-
source Centre, KwaZakhele on Saturday 23
March. Admission will be R60 per person
each day.
The show on Friday will start at 6pm
whereas it is scheduled to start at 4pm on Sat-
urday. Wani, whose Rivonia Trial stage pro-
ductions have toured countries in Asia and
Europe, said he was invited by the ministers
of both churches, Reverends Katsha and
Ntanjana respectively, to present his Chris-
tian Comedy to their congregations.
The reason is simply that I amaChristian,
an artist and entertainer who has just discov-
ered this love of comedy which of course has
always been there in the Christian communi-
ty, said Wani.
Christian comedy is growing fast in South
Africa in recent times and Wani believes it
is time that Christians fully appreciate the
power of this art form - because laughter is
the best medicine, he said.
When I read the Bible, I see comedy. I see
the preacher, there is comedy staring me in
the face. Pastors, ushers, and singers in the
churchprovide us artistswith great material
for comedy, said Wani.
He added, It is also important that we
South Africans do not always take ourselves
too seriously in church - that we fail to see
that God has a sense of humour.
South Africans have a lot to laugh about,
according to Wani. Within the context of
scripture they can get a comedy that is clean
but with a very strong message, he said.
Wani will feature his daughter Sivu (11), a
singer who is part of some of the acts in the
production. Sivu won the Mnet sponsored
Mzantsi Magic Talent Search Show (in mu-
sic) in 2012.

MAKHOSONKE The Machine Zwengu
won the Eastern Cape Middleweight title on
points from the defending champion Masi-
xole Botile at the BabsMadlakane Communi-
tyHall, KwaNobuhle inUitenhage last Satur-
day.
Their 10-round fight was the main attrac-
tion of Andile Siqwepus Andile Boxing Pro-
motions 9-bout bill.
The bout failed to live up to expectations.
It looked more like wrestling than a boxing
match with Zwengu of KwaNobuhle being
the only one putting up an effort for a fight.
The taller Botile, of Walmer township,
gave his title on a silver platter. Botile did
not use his reach advantage. While he tried
to confuseZwenguby twisting fromorthodox
to south-paw stance from the third round -
he could not exploit it.
It was the second time that the
two pugilists locked horns with
Botile twice coming second best.
Judges, Prince Mbambaza,
Nonelwa Fukutwa and Lizo Jor-
daan scored the fight 99-90, 99-91
and 98-92 respectively in favour
of the new champion Zwengu.
I am happy I won. Botile tried
to confuse me but he was no
match on the day, said a jubi-
lant South Africas No.2 rated
Zwengu who was risking an op-
portunity to fight for the SA title
by challenging Botile.
But a lot is needed from Zwen-
gu who has just joined a new sta-
ble, if he wants to conquer the
world. And, his manager con-
curs.
We still have to work hard to
beat Christopher Buthelezi for
the SA title, said SiphoNogamp-
ula and Silindokuhle Boxing
Club trainer, Mlawuli Nawule,
agreed.
In the main supporting bout, up-and-
coming prospectMzwanbantuDabaza beat
the talented but ageing Vuyo Toyise on
points over 6 rounds in the Junior Fly-
weight division.
In the main preliminary bout Lungisa
Jikani beat Ndudumo Lolwana on points
(6 rounds Lightweight) and Lwandile Phil-
lip beat Nwabisile Colani (Flyweight) also
over 6 rounds.
In the other bouts, all over 4 rounds; Du-
misani Tshokela stopped Zimkhitha Lane
KO3; XolisaKana beat Sinethemba Stali on
points; Siphosethu Ncisane beat Mzwama-
doda Jibiliza on points; Ayanda Fatyi beat
Luthando Calata on points and in the only
female bout Nomampondomise Xotyeni
drew with Asandiswa Nxokweni in the
Lightweight division.

Second place is,
however, far from
