Hilary termThursday 23 January (1stweek)Rachel MundyDepartment of Music, University of Pittsburgh

Songson theDissectingTable:Ethnomusicologyand theGermanLaboratoryTradition

A reader scanning music journals from the 1920s and‘30s discovers the recurrence of a gruesomemetaphor, one that compares snatches of melody tothe broken body of a vivisected laboratory animal. This talk explores the role of the Germanphysiological laboratory in early ethnomusicology, tracing the empirical tradition that tied togetherphysical bodies and musical ones. Mundy argues thatvisual traditions of knowledge in the laboratoryframed music as a “body” that could be cut into andexamined. Moving from the inscriptions ofnineteenth-century laboratory instruments to thescratches of the stylus in early wax cylinders, sheshows how laboratory traditions instrumentalizedthis approach. But while this musical “laboratory”legitimized the study of non-Western music, it alsoimposed an impossible conflict between acquiringgreater knowledge about foreign cultures, andexpressing greater sympathy for them.

Thursday 30 January (2ndweek)MariaMendonçaDepartments of Music and Anthropology, Kenyon College

Music inWomen's Prisons in England

In recent years, it has been increasinglyacknowledged that participation in music and otherarts forms can have an important role in the processof rehabilitation in prison. Evidence suggests thatinvolvement in music projects can provide hard-to-reach prisoners - many of whom have experienceddifferent forms of social exclusion - with positiveaffective experiences, which can act as catalysts, stimulating important changes in behaviour, involvement in other prison activities and otherforms of education, and thereby contributing tobreaking the cycle of reoffending. In her talk, Mariawill draw on her current research into musicprovision in women's prisons in England, discussingthe range and impact of this work, how music issituated in the public discourse of rehabilitation, and the challenges of music ethnography in thepublic sector.

CarmenMiranda'sMusical Performances inBrazilianandHollywoodFilms (1932-1953)

This talk will consider the performance style of singerCarmen Miranda (1909-1955) in her film roles inBrazil and the USA.Already a famous radio performerand recording artist, her film career in Brazil wasclosely bound up with the musical styles associatedwith Rio de Janeiro's carnival in the 1930s, especiallythe Afro-Brazilian samba. Before leaving for the USAin 1939, she appropriated the ethnically loadedpersona of the 'baiana', polemically adopting thecostume of Afro-Brazilian female street vendors ofthe colonial era. This talk will examine how sheadapted this screen persona for her Hollywoodscreen roles, 'whitening' the 'baiana', and willanalyse her performance style in the correspondingmusical numbers.

TheAcoustic-Unconscious:RecoveringMarshallMcLuhan

Marshall McLuhan is considered to be a foundingfigure of sound studies, but he is also (in)famous forhis techno-determinism, Orientalism and, mostimportantly, oral/literate dichotomy. By contrast, hisconcept of “acoustic space” is often overlooked.Erlmann argues that it is time to revisit McLuhan’scontribution to early sound studies and to examinethe place of “acoustic space” in his theory of media. In so doing he hopes to broaden the current debateabout sound on the edge or the “unsound” to whatErlmann calls the “acoustic-unconscious.”

This workshop explores how notions ofcultural alterity and universalism, emergingfrom global processes of colonialism andexchange, impacted on the development ofmusical thought in early modern Europe.AsWestern Europeans were increasinglyexposed to a whole world of musical styles, key thinkers asked how and why the meaningof music differed between cultures, andwhether these meanings could be conveyedacross cultural boundaries.

Led by Emeritus Professor Reinhard Strohmand an international committee ofmusicologists from Humboldt University,TheHebrew University, King's College, Universityof Oxford, University ofVienna and theUniversity of Zurich, this two-day event ispart of the Balzan Programme in Musicology“Towards a Global History of Music”.
