From the President's Desk

Welcome to this edition of Voice!

Wow! I can hardly believe that we have already finished the first term for 2017, how the time goes so fast.

We have been very busy in the office with Ilona moving all our things to the new office which is just 2 buildings before our previous one.

It is slightly smaller, but still attached to LOTE Library and a bit more private. All contact details remain the same and it is well sign posted for you to find.

January saw us with our first two sessions of Ipad Training with Paula Thomas. These sessions were well attended, but not everyone could attend due to school holiday activities.

Our second sessions were held on Monday the 3rd April, and once again they were well attended and received.

Some of the first session attendees also attended the April sessions. They are proving to be very popular with requests already for more follow up sessions.

With this in mind we will look at another session maybe in the second term break. thank you all for your support.

(Pictures and story in this edition.)

We are looking at another Cultural Performance similar to last years event at Coorparoo College.

Last year we had a small grant to assist with the production costs, but unfortunately we have not been successful with our grant application this year.

We are looking at another avenue for financial support, so please do keep in mind that we will be looking for School involvement in this activity.

We will have more news in the coming months.

Our next major event will be the AGM to be held on the 3rd May. All the relevant information is in this edition.

Please make sure that your school is financial and that you send at least two representatives along to this meeting.

If you have an event or a story to tell, please make sure you submit it to [email protected] so it can be included in our Voice Edition or as an item on our Web page.

Happy School Break and look forward to seeing you at our AGM in May.

Irene Bayldon Tavutavu

EQUIPMENT

FREE TO GO ESAQ has accumulated office equipment which are not in use in our smaller office anymore. If your school can have any use of the following equipment, please let us know at our email address: [email protected].

You can pick it up from our office, previously setting up an appointment or alternatively pick your choice of equipment up from the AGM (3 May from 6 pm to 8 pm).

You should notify us in advance, so the equipment can be delivered to the venue of the AGM since our office cannot be accessed after 5 pm.

After the 3 May ESAQ donates the equipment to Substation 33 is a social enterprise located south of Brisbane that takes old, broken and unwanted electronics and either fixes them, uses the parts in other projects, or breaks them apart for recycling.

ESAQ Secretariat organised two sessions of iPad workshops for its members in the January school holidays. The workshops were held at Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre in Kangaroo Point. The aim of the workshops was to familiarise all the teachers with how they could utilise iPads to engage and energise the students and maximise their learning opportunities. The sessions were planned and run by Paula Thomas who is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a teacher in West End. 28 teachers were in attendance from the Brisbane Sinhala School, Brisbane Tamil School, Brisbane German Language School, FAFQ Language School Filipino, AFLA Filipino School, Brisbane Hungarian School.

iPad Workshop Beginners Session 1: Length 3 hours

The focus was to introduce the iPad and begin to understand all the features that make it such a valuable learning tool. The ESAQ teachers learnt how to adjust all the iPad settings to type and read text in their native language, take photos and videos and insert them into creative books using a program called Book Creator. They became skilled at sharing their creative works with other iPads using a program called Airdrop. Popplet was used as a mindmapping app that promotes brainstorming ideas and recording ideas in visual forms. Many ideas were shared about how they could use their new skills to present the curriculum in new and exciting ways.

iPad Workshop Advanced Session 2: Length 3 hours

Session 2 involved learning how Keynote, Explain Everything, iMovie, Padlet and Socrative apps could transform the activities in the classroom. Keynote was used to create a lesson plan flow that includes information, photos, diagrams, short videos and external links to websites. Explain Everything is a screen-recording tool that can display what is being drawn on the screen with a voice over explaining what is happening. This is a

great tool to make short tutorials for the students to watch and review. They are able to pause the tutorial and replay for extra understanding. Padlet is a collaborative app where all students can contribute their ideas to a shared space in real-time. It also provided the opportunity to add photos, images and diagrams. Socrative is a collaborative quiz app that allows students to select multiple choice, true false and short answer questions. The value in this app is its ability to collate all the student answers on the screen for sharing and discussion of alternate points of view.

All of the apps allow for sharing and saving as images and videos which can be collated and made into a movie using iMovie with opportunities for voice overs, titles and background music.

All the notes and resources for the workshops were placed in an iTunesU course that teachers enrolled in. ESAQ teachers were able to access all the resources and notes during the workshops and also access them, as they needed when they were back in their schools.

The feedback from the workshops was positive with all the teachers enjoying the activities whilst learning many new skills to take back to their classrooms. A second series of workshops is planned for the next School Holidays.

SPOTLIGHT

Nicole Peck

Year 11

Brisbane German Language School

The school about itself:

At the not-for-profit Brisbane German Language School, we offer fun and engaging German classes for children, youths and adults at all levels of competency, for both native and non-native learners of German.

Our language classes are held at St Peters Lutheran College in Indooroopilly on Saturday mornings during school terms, with additional adult classes on some weekday evenings. German lessons are complemented by regular cultural activities, allowing you to put into action what you have learned in the classroom and explore the cultures and traditions of German-speaking countries.

Further information:

http://www.bgls.org.au/

Since when have you been studying at the BGLS?

For 6 years.

How was your German before you started attending the school?

I knew some words, because my mum is German, so it was easier but I have learnt a lot.

What did you like the most when you started the school?

The language and understanding my relatives, even writing to them .

As far as I understood you want to teach as well. Is that right?

I want to become a Primary School teacher. I don’t know yet if in Australia or in Germany.

Any subject you do especially like?

I like German and History, especially Ancient History, like Ancient Greece. And Legal Studies.

When did you visit Germany last time?

I went to Germany last year on a school exchange, but before that it was 5 years earlier only. It was lot easier this time to communicate with my relatives, and talk to them as well.

How do you keep your German up to date?

I still have German films to watch that I brought with me from Germany, and some books. But I also learn German at school as well, and I had German immersion last year, now German acceleration I can win a scholarship to go to Germany and study there. I would really like that because I enjoyed Munich last year as well.

GOOD LUCK, NICOLE!
