Obituaries

John J. Echeverry, PhD

John Echeverry died Thursday, August 28,2008 of colon cancer. He was 54 years old.John had been associated with GeorgeWashington University since his graduationfrom the Clinical/Community PsychologyProgram at the University of Maryland inCollege Park. He was a Research Scholarwith appointments in the Departments ofPsychology, Psychiatry, and BehavioralScience at GWU. He was the PrincipalInvestigator on a National Institute of DrugAbuse Senior Research Fellowship focusedon club drug use among gay and bisexualmen. His research contributions have alsoincluded the study of mood disorders aswell as cross-cultural research about theresilience of homeless street youth inColombia and the United States. John was amember of the APA Minority FellowshipProgram Advisory Committee for severalyears. He was an active supporter ofcommunity-based Latino health programsand of the Latino Arts community. He wasa Board Member of Nueva Vida, anorganization to prevent cancer amongLatinas.

Jaswant L. Khanna, PhD

Dr. Jaswant Lal Khanna was born inLahore, India on July 5, 1925 and made histransition from this life on July 13, 2009.Dr. Khanna survived the partition of India

and Pakistan in 1947and became a lifelongadvocate of diversityand work to improvecross-cultural under-standing. Dr. Khannacame to the UnitedStates on a FulbrightFellowship in 1953and obtained his PhDin Clinical Psychologyfrom the University of Colorado in 1956. Hehas been a Professor in the Department ofPsychiatry at University of Tennessee,Memphis since 1961. His family was thefirst family of East Indian origin to move toMemphis in 1961. He has held universityappointments at Punjab University, TheUniversity of Colorado and LeMoyne OwenCollege. His work has spanned a wide rangeof professional interests including grouppsychotherapy training, clinical hypnosis,cross-cultural psychology, transpersonalpsychology and evaluation projects. He haspublished three books, numerous bookchapters and participated in diverseregional, national and internationalpsychology symposium. He has been activein Diversity Memphis and numerouscommunity groups. He served a facilitatorof race relations groups, involving theMemphis Police Department and Memphis'African American leadership following theassassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.He also was long-time chair of theTennessee Psychological Association'sCommittee on Ethnic Minority Affairs. Heis survived by his second wife Bess Khanna,his daughter, Dr. Mukti Khanna of Olympia,

Ileana Arias New Acting Deputy at U.S.Centers for Disease Control

Ileana Arias, PhD has been detailed to theposition of Acting Deputy Director for theU.S. Centers for Disease Control Agencyfor Toxic Substances and Disease RegistryCDC/ATSDR. In this role, she will serve asprincipal advisor to the Administrator on allscientific and programming activities ofCDC/ATSDR. As Acting Deputy, she will

work in the executive responsibilities ofshap ing p o l ic i e s and p lans fo rCDC/ATSDR, including overseeing theorganizational improvement activities. Dr.Arias has been at CDC since 2000 at theNational Center for Injury Prevention andControl.

Division 45 Names Austria the ThomasAward Winner

Division 45 awarded Asuncion MiteriaAustria, PhD, professor and chair atCardinal Stritch University, the Charles andShirley Thomas Award for her significantcontributions in the area of studentmentoring and development, and makingpsychology responsive and relevant to theneeds of the ethnic minority community.

Boulon-Diaz Named APPR President

France Boulon-Diaz, PhD was electedPresident of the Asociacion de Psicologia de

Puerto Rico (APPR). After counting theballots and certifying the tally, the APPRElection Committee recently announced theresults of a special election, held November14 through December 29, 2009. Dr.Boulon-Diaz's term will begin immediately.

Castillo Awarded U. S. Department ofEducation Grant

Dr. Linda Castillo from Texas A&MUniversity was awarded a second 6-year,$2.7 million "Gaining Early Awareness andReadiness for Undergraduate Programs"(GEAR UP) grant from the U.S. Departmentof Education. This grant will fund workwith local low-income middle schoolstudents in the A&M area.

At the recent Annual Meeting of theMichigan Psychological Association,Josephine Johnson, PhD was the recipientof the MPA Distinguished PsychologistAward. Johnson is a past MPA Presidentand currently serves as that Association’sFederal Advocacy Coordinator.

2009 Stanley Sue Award Goes to Leong

APA Division 12 presented its 2009 StanleySue Award for Distinguished Contributionsto Diversity in Clinical Psychology toFrederick T. L. Leong, PhD. The SueAward honors psychologists who havemade remarkable contributions tounderstanding diversity, overcoming

prejudice, and enhancing the quality of lifefor humankind. The award will be made atthe 2009 APA Annual Convention inToronto.

Library of Congress Appoints Parks AsLarson Fellow

Fayth M. Parks, PhD, a licensedpsychologist and associate professor atGeorgia Southern University, has been

appointed as a David B. Larson Fellow inHealth and Spirituality at the Library ofCongress beginning August 2009. Parks’research will focus on the relation ofreligiousness and spirituality to physical,mental, and social health.

Native Woman Nominated To Head IndianHealth Service

President Barack Obama nominated YvetteRobideaux, a Lakota woman and memberof the Rosebud Sioux tribe, to lead theUnited States Indian Health Service (IHS).If confirmed by the Senate, she will be thefirst Native woman to take charge of theIHS. Dr. Roubideaux is currently anAssistant Professor at The University ofArizona College of Medicine.

Steele to Become Columbia Provost

Claude M. Steele, a psychology professorat Stanford University, was named as the

next provost of Columbia University.Steele’s research on stereotypes andself-identity has been widely read anddiscussed by educators hoping to closesocioeconomic gaps in educationalachievement.
