SCHOLARSHIPS2013 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

If I can see it, and I can touch it, I CAN do it!Hawthorn Elementary - Katie Guier, Functional Special EducationThisprojectwillbringnewtechnologyinthe Functional Special Education classroom. Students with special needs are captivated by and respond well to visuals; however many of the students in this population lack the fine motor skills to properly navigate a mouse or to key on the keyboard. Bringing a SMART Board in to our classroom will make technology available to these students in groupandindividualizedactivities.Itwillalso enable the teacher to present learning opportunities that will meet the needs of the students.

E-Readers Encourage EducationChinn Elementary - Eve Orf, ºLibrary Media ClassroomThis program aims to capitalize on the student’s enthusiasm for technology in order topromotereading.Itwillenablestudentsto read and access quality children’s literature throughtheuseofNooke-bookreaders.Students who have acquired parental permission will check out the devices from thelibraryandenjoyreadingavarietyoffictionandnonfictiontitlesontheNookinvarious formats.

Lynx Outdoor Learning CenterLakeview Middle School - Terry Beasley, Vanessa Prindle, Kelsey Jury, Carolyn MimbsThisprojectisacrosscurricularmulti-lesson unit between the Gifted classroom, 8th Grade Science and Art. The school is planning to develop an outdoor learning center. The purpose of the grant is to promoteinterdisciplinary,hands-oninstructioninauniquesetting.Inaddition,thisprojectisintendedtoencourageawareness, appreciation, and active conservation of natural resources. The natural landscape will be used to create amphitheater style seating. A handicapped accessible trail will be included.

M & M Math (Math Masters)Partially funded by the Benjamin Banneker & Lucille Sears Douglass Classroom GrantGraden Elementary - Brenda VernonBuilding a strong foundation in math is vital forfuturesuccess.Whenchildrenlearnhowuseful math can be and how they can apply specificmathskillstoreal-lifesituations,theyworkharderandperformbetter.OrigoMathisacommon-senseapproachfortheteachingand learning of computation. Trial and error strategies help solve problems and can be useful in science, statistics and in careers. Math strategies can also teach persistence andperseverance.Providingastep-by-stepapproach, explicit instruction, and meeting the individual needs of the students will help produce a significant, positive outcome.Learn Music, Use Smart Boards, Change

Your FutureTiffany Ridge Elementary - Maureen Buck, Music EducationHaving a Smart Board in the music classroom allows each student in the building to experience music through all senses and avenues of learning. Auditory, visual, kinesthetic aspects come alive as students can interact. Music is active and participatory and the Smart Board lends nicely to environments of learning and demonstrating knowledge in proper context instead of simply on paper.

Ipad I Learn Partially funded by the Larry Gardner Excellence in Teaching Award Endowed Classroom GrantPlaza Middle School - Barbara Morrow Special Education ClassroomThis program is designed to incorporate the useofIpadApplicationswithintheLanguageArts curriculum to provide opportunities for Special Education students to improve their ability to communicate effectively through written language. Students will use an application that records their voice, turning it into written work. Grammar and story writing applications will be used to aidinprogressionofbasicskills.OtherIpadapplicationswillbeusedwithintheMathematics curriculum to improve math facts fluency and accuracy when applying skill tomulti-stepproblems.

Global Connections to Common CorePark Hill High School - Dana Kepler, Charlotte Land, Paul BellmanThisprojectisacrosscurricularmulti-lessonunitbetweenCommunicationArts,WorldHistoryandCurrentEvents.Inthiseraofglobalization, learning about the world and making connections to the culture, history and current state of world affairs willpreparestudentstobemulti-literate,competent learners who are critical thinkers and responsible global citizens. Reaching beyond the traditional literature circle format, students will work collaboratively and independently to read, analyze, research and synthesize information from a variety of sources including novels, nonfiction books, databasesandtheInternet.

In keeping with the Foundation’s mission one of its primary programs is the Classroom Grant program. The Foundation provides funds for innovative educational programs or techniques for our students in the classroom above what tax dollars provide. Since 1999, the Park Hill Education Foundation has awarded 163 Classroom Grants to 424 teachers totaling $232,505.

These are not listed in any particular order.

Microscope MakeoverPlaza Middle School - Casie Schmid, Christy Muehl, Tom Nixon, Sharon Rigos Science ClassroomsTeaching scientific skills requires use of specialized technology. Middle school students studying microscopic organisms mustseemicroorganismsfirst-handinorderto solidify the abstract concept of living things unseen by the unaided human eye. This grant will provide thirteen student microscopes for use within the middle school science curriculum. Experience utilizing microscopes enriches learning related to both content and scientific equipment procedures.

CLASSROOM GRANTS

Facilitating Veracious ReadersTiffany Ridge Elementary - Alicia Kershaw, Kari Rowe, Tracy Gillispie, Brittany Bradshaw, 2nd GradeThe goal is to provide all 2nd grade students with access to sufficient fiction and nonfiction texts. Students are expected to read more as well as to read increasingly complex texts to meet the new English Language Arts Common Core standards. Quality classroom literature and informational text is imperative to increase reading motivation, reading achievement, and relevancy of programming. This grant will provide collections of literature for the classrooms.

There’s Nothing Common About it- Getting to the Core with NonfictionPlaza Middle School - Cheryl Toby, Sydney Dingman, Nichole Oothoudt, Elizabeth SumnerNonfictiontextcanbedauntingformiddleschool students. Colorful pictures, short articles, and relevant information make this experiencemoreengaging.WithcommonCore on the horizon, we need to provide more applicable nonfiction texts for our young readers. FACES and Calliope magazines are an effective way to do this. The articles in these resources will spark students’ curiosity, increasing motivation for learning.

C2 Math (Conquering Concepts)Graden Elementary - Brenda Vernon, 5th Grade Classroom, Tara Garcia, 3rd Grade ClassroomAt the core of any math program is its content—the actual math problem it presents to a child as practice and reinforcement. TheIXLcomputerprogram’sgoalistohelp students gain true understanding of a concept,ensuringlong-termskillretention.The best method, practice, allows students to achieve automaticity of basic skills which frees up the working memory for more complexaspectsofproblemsolving.IXLoffers a multitude of practice skills designed

to develop math skills to ensure that every student has an infinite number of problems with which to hone their individual skills.

in the classroom

The Lifetime Writing ReaderLine Creek Elementary - Kristen Spence, Amy Spillman, 3rd Grade Classrooms“Readingjournals”providestudentswithtechniques to guide them as they grow as readers. Ensuring that students read quality materials and recording their thinking helps teachers track strategies and skills needed for building lifelong readers. Also, they provide a way for teachers and students to collaborate as readers.Thegoalofthisprojectistoprovide students with a variety of ways to respond to text and can be used to guide assessment, develop reading skills, and encourage our third graders to develop a love of reading.

Hawthorne House in Parkville. This is a time when we bring our school, corporate

Smart Start is a focused summer school academic intervention program designed to meet the individual needsofstudentswhojustcompletedkindergarten, first, second or third grade and are not performing at grade level. The goal is to prepare students for the upcoming school year and keep them from losing ground during the summer.

Themainobjectiveistoincreasetheacademic success of the students. Literacy is the key. All school subjectmattersrequirereadingandcomprehension; science, social studies

and even math. Through this program students learn the skills needed to becomemoreproficientinreading.Itbuilds their confidence and gives them that“SmartStart”forthecomingyear.Smart Start provides each student with transportation, breakfast and supplies. Students get specialized and individual instruction in small classroom settings. The program was offered as a pilot program during the summer of 2010andhasexpandedtoservicefourschools.

After the program was implemented Smart Start students were compared to

similar students in Park Hill that chose not to attend. The comparison was based from a nationally normed test that was administered to all students in the first two weeks of school in the fall of each year. Results found students that participated in Smart Start were roughly one month ahead of students that did not participate.
