Important information from Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana News

Tooth decay continues to top the charts as the number one chronic childhood disease today. Delta Dental and the MDA believe that the future of better oral health lies in positively impacting daily oral health routines, as well as increasing access to good dental care. This is why the two foundations came together to create a colorful, educational book which highlights key health information, offers engaging pictures and activities for kids, and

has easy-to-follow dental tips.

“A key element in trying to combat these statistics today is to educate parents and children early on and give them the knowledge and tools necessary to prevent oral health-related issues down the road,” said Teri Battaglieri, director of the Delta Dental Foundation. “We need to educate with a message that’s simple and easy to remember for everyone. That’s why we’ve come up with our ‘2x2+20’ equation that equals a healthy mind and body.”

The “2x2+20” message encourages children to brush

two times a day, for two minutes each time, plus read for 20 minutes each day. The premise behind this elementary equation is the belief that students who are absent from school because of preventable oral health issues miss critical instruction time, impacting reading and learning skills that are the building blocks for future learning.

As an added component to early education efforts and increasing visits to the dentist, Delta Dental recently introduced its “From Drool to School” oral health video, which has generated substantial interest online and within the oral health community. The video is the second of a five-part video series focusing on various oral health-related topics.

It’s never too early to begin teaching good oral health and hygiene habits,” said Battaglieri. “Reaching out to young children and their parents in a fun and engaging way whether it’s in a dentist’s office, school classroom, or even at home can only increase the chances of them having good oral health and overall health in the future, not to mention better success in school too.”

To simplify claim submission for orthodontic claims, we are moving to standardize how we process orthodontic claims. With this change, it will no longer be required to submit the orthodontic initial fee and the number of months of treatment. Delta Dental will calculate the initial fee using 30 percent of the total fee and determine the number of treatment months based on the type of orthodontic treatment being rendered.

In mid-August the following changes are being made to improve and simplify the processing of orthodontic claims:

• It will no longer be required for the dentist to submit an initial fee. We will calculate the initial payment using 30% of the total fee. If an initial fee is submitted, it will not be used.

• It will no longer be required for the dentist to submit the number of months of treatment. In processing orthodontic claims, we will use the following number of months for each treatment type:

o Comprehensive—25 months o Interceptive—18 monthso Limited—12 months

However, Delta Dental will continue to process one time payments for any orthodontic treatment plan where the approved fee for the total treatment plan is less than $2,000.

With these changes, the only information required for orthodontic services is the procedure code and the total fee. As a reminder, retention should not be submitted as a service. The cost for retention should be included in the total treatment fee submitted.

With studies showing that kids miss 51 million hours of school each year because of oral health issues1, the Delta Dental Foundation (DDF) has teamed up with the Michigan Dental Association (MDA) Foundation on a new book, “From Drool to School.” Focusing on the importance of oral health care for kids beginning at birth, the book is designed to educate parents and caregivers and will be distributed to pediatric dental/medical offices, early education centers, school districts, and community care facilities throughout the state.

Removing financial barriers to dental care is a key component in attracting patients to the dental office. That’s why Delta Dental continues to highlight innovative options like Delta Dental Patient Direct. As notified with past communications, all participating Delta Dental PPOSM dentists are already participating as Delta Dental Patient Direct providers.

As we continue to market our Delta Dental Patient Direct program, we’ve found discount cards to be a win-win for everyone. It encourages people to get the oral health care they need by offering savings, and can help bring patients into your practice.

That’s more important than ever. A recent report by the American Dental Association indicates that overall spending on dental care has remained flat in recent years.2 The ADA’s Health Policy Resources Center found that adult dental visits declined from 2000 to 2010, leading to less spending on dentistry and oral care.

In these uncertain economic times, Delta Dental Patient Direct remains an effective tool in the marketplace. It is a simple and inexpensive method of encouraging uninsured individuals and families to schedule important dental visits while saving money on health care products and services.

This is not an insurance or reimbursement plan. Delta Dental Patient Direct is based on the Delta Dental PPO fee schedule. Delta Dental Patient Direct discounts are only available through participating Delta Dental PPO dentists.

Delta Dental Patient Direct gives families savings on the health care they need and is an excellent way to help participating dentists deliver quality services.

Seventy-five Delta Dental of Michigan employees reached out on Friday, June 7 and spent the day as volunteers at the Mission of Mercy (MOM) event at Saginaw Valley State University.

They were part of a dedicated team that staffed a 2-day, 100-chair dental clinic. Dental exams and services were provided at no charge to 1,300 children and adults. Hundreds of dentists, dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental laboratory technicians and numerous other volunteers donated their time to provide free dental care.

The Delta Dental Foundation contributed $50,000 toward the program, organized by the Michigan Dental Association Foundation.

The focus was on providing free access to dental care while placing a high priority on patients suffering from dental infections or pain. Another major priority involved educating patients about the importance of good daily oral hygiene practices, healthy diet and routine preventive dental care.

The massive undertaking was one of the largest, most comprehensive dental access events to date in Michigan.

The card is easy to use. Patients show it when visiting a participating dentist to receive products and services at a discount. There is a low annual fee but there are no waiting periods, no limits on use and no claim forms to complete. As many of you already know, this discount program has been great news for dentists and patients alike for several years.

National Group Rosters are frequently used documents by dental offices in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. Because the number of Delta Dental covered groups continues to grow, the size of the document has increased. Therefore, we are printing a minimal number of copies and are urging dental office staff to reference the electronic version. These are stored on the Dental Office Toolkit® under the provider reference materials section.

When Delta Dental has a subscriber who has coordination of benefits and we are the secondary payer, dental offices need to indicate what the primary carrier paid. Some offices attach the EOB from the primary carrier to fulfill this requirement, but we just need to know what was paid by the primary carrier.

Dental offices can write the amount paid by the primary carrier in the remarks field or the other fees field box #32 on the claim. The claim can be processed more efficiently through our OCR scanning system if it is a single claim without the attachment.
