A late night Domino’s is fairly standard procedure, whatever the circumstances. However, on the past few occasions, I’ve had a few extras thrown in on top of mymeal deal.

The story begins a few weeks ago after a night of Netflix with a friend. As my window is fairly large, we decided to order a pizza and get them to come over andhand it in. But when my friend hung out the window half an hour later, the driver had more on his mind than passing over that carby goodness.

After telling us that his name, he asked if we had any weed to help us through his shift. We responded in the negative and he shuffled off into the night. Bit odd, butwe decided to leave it.

Fast forward to a few nights ago and it’s a whole different story. I’d just come back after a social and was craving some wedges, so decided to employ the windowmethod again. PJs, bed, Domino’s app, done.

Me in simpler times

Little did I know the night had only just begun.

Incoming call.

“Hello, it’s Domino’s.”

“Are you outside?”

“Yeah, yeah.”

I peer out of the window and see nothing. Reluctantly, I head to the door and look again. Nothing. Is this fucker playing hide and seek?

Incoming call.

“Hello, it’s Domino’s. Can you see me?”

“No….can you see me?”

Cue hysterical laughter down the phone.

“I’m so confused.” And I am. I just want my wedges.

“Me too!”

The call cuts off. I get another incoming call.

“Are you at the bridge?”

“No…I’m at my house.” Where the hell else would I be?

“My sat nav misdirected me, I see you, I see you!”

I look down the street and there’s a guy wandering across the road, laughing. I get handed my food and head in.

Just as I’m finishing, my phone buzzes.

Now it’s my turn to laugh. What is this shit?

I decide to message him back. The following conversation ensues.

By now it’s 1am, the carb coma is setting in, and I decide to process it in the morning.

I tell a few people about my new friend, and get mixed responses. On one end of the spectrum we’ve got “Wow, that’s so sinister.” On the other, we have “It’s notlike he was saying, ‘I’m going to come back and kill you’, he was just loving life.” However, the majority tell me they’d be disturbed by getting random messagesoff their delivery guy, especially if I’d been asked for weed a few weeks previously by someone else.

Personally I found the whole thing pretty hilarious, but it begins to occur to me that some people may not appreciate being asked for a joint or sent flirtatiousmessages from giggling strangers. So I decide to tweet Domino’s about it.

I send over an email outlining the situation. I told them it left me unsettled. I told them I was incredibly unhappy with the experiences and I wasn’t sure whether toorder from them again for fear of more inappropriate texts and questions about drugs.

Domino’s send over a generic apology, saying the issue was being investigated and telling me I’ll hear from the local store soon. Their email said: “Sorry to hear thatyou’re not too happy with the service received at your local store. Domino’s runs as a franchised business and means that we work closely with each franchisee andtheir stories to ensure that service doesn’t slip below our expectations. We have made the store and their franchise manager aware of your upset.”

Maybe I’ll get a free pizza out of it. Hopefully without requests for weed or giggly text banter on the side.

I Got Invited to Ask Cameron About The EU Referendum- Oh No Wait, He Just Defended His Pro-EU CampaignThen Left 07/04/2016 16:23 | Updated 07 April 2016

Imogen Groome Blogger, writer, Exeter graduate

So I got an interesting email from the Vice Chancellor of Exeter University theother night at around 10:30pm.

As I’m a graduate business partner at the University, Professor Sir SteveSmith sent me an invite to “a special Q&A session with a senior CabinetMinister.” It was advertised as “an opportunity to ask questions on theimportant subject of Britain’s EU membership and what it means for youngpeople”. We needed to RSVP ASAP as places were limited and first comefirst served. We would be advised of the location by email the followingevening. We weren’t allowed to forward the email invitation as the invite waspersonal.

Damn, I’m busy all of Thursday, was my first thought. I’m gutted I can’t go,but I’ll have to turn it down. However, as the day went on, it remained at theback of my mind. Who was this “senior Cabinet Minister” going to be?Should I clear my schedule for this? When I asked a few friends and one ofthem said “You’re turning down an event that high level? You what?” Irealised I was being an idiot and sent an email directly to the Vice Chancellorto confirm my attendance.I had wondered why a colleague had knocked on her window as I walkedpast her office earlier that day and scrambled outside to ask me if I wasattending, and why another colleague had emailed me to ask if I could makeit. I didn’t realise how high-security and secret the event was until the nightbefore.

I first realised it would be Cameron speaking when my Facebook newsfeedpopped up with an update from student newspaper The Tab. Their latestarticle was titled “David Cameron is coming to Exeter tomorrow”. Well, damn. That’s why it’s all so last-minute and hush-hush! I immediatelybrowsed events and posts on Facebook and saw that the socialist studentswere in uproar. They were not happy that Cameron was turning up to give asession aimed at young people at a time when the majority of the student

population were not present, as they are currently home for the Easterholidays. I’m friends with a few of the MA students here at the University, andthose who were at home were gutted they couldn’t show up.

Those who were still in Exeter, however, were more than ready to show up.An event popped up detailing that there were people who wanted to protestCameron coming to Exeter. Someone was planning on swinging by thehospital in the morning to pick up some of the junior doctors currentlyengaged in protest. Suddenly, my email pinged. The Vice Chancellor wassaying that I had been selected to attend the event, and informing me of thesecret location. I checked the events pages on Facebook again, and sawthat people were planning to congregate in the morning on the main campus.I realised I had to keep quiet about my involvement as there was no way Icould reveal to anyone where the Prime Minister would be turning up thenext day and still be allowed into the session - I’d risk potentiallyinadvertently releasing a horde of protesters.

There were a few questions I wanted to ask David Cameron, to put it lightly.

A couple of friends provided questions, also, and I added them to my list.

In the morning, I booked a taxi up to campus. On the way there, the driverasked what I had going on. “Oh, you know. Just going to a session with thePrime Minister on the EU.” “Wait, what?”

He asked me if I was a Politics graduate after I gave my opinion on thesituation and event, and I had to tell him no - I read ancient literature for threeyears, I just have strong opinions about the state of UK politics!

Once I was on campus, I was struck by how quiet it was. There were a fewpolice vans quietly cruising around - just a hint of what was set to be goingdown later on. I headed up to the campus Costa and wrote up my questionsfor Cameron.

On my way to the location, I spotted a BBC van. Well, I thought, this is goingto be bigger than I imagined.

I turned up half an hour early. On purpose, might I add - I wanted to see whatwas going on. There was a group of people stood in the room, and Iintroduced myself. Then I began making enquiries. The conversation thenwent something like this.

“So who’s the minister in attendance today?”

“I’m afraid I can’t tell you that. You can guess, though!”

“Well, I have my theories, especially after a media leak last night.”

“You can tell me who you think it isn’t, if you want.”

“Ok...is it not...everybody but the Prime Minister?”

Cue awkward laughter. I had my answer - I was pretty sure before, but I’dwanted it confirmed. Cameron was in Exeter.

I listened to the organisers talk about how they were going to tackleattendance, security and so on. I asked where the event was going to takeplace, as I knew the location we were in was just for registration. They toldme they couldn’t reveal that information.

People began filtering in to register. The organisers began talking about “thelist”. If you weren’t on “the list”, you weren’t getting in. I made sure I was on“the list”. Someone walked in with a printout of the Vice - Chancellor’s emailand got turned away because they weren’t on “the list”. Well, damn. Thissecurity is high-level.

The University Registrar showed up to give us a briefing. We waitedexpectantly for him to tell us who the “senior Cabinet Minister” was going tobe. “It’s the Right Honourable David Cameron.”

There was complete silence for a minute.

“Woo!” someone exclaimed briefly. Awkward laughter around the room.

We were ushered over to the event venue. The paparazzi and live streamcrew were everywhere. I spotted a few significant people from the BBCchatting in the corner. My colleague and I chatted with a few local MPs.

Then we waited.

About an hour later, Cameron suddenly swept into the room. He was sat justin front of me, a few seats down. An introductory speech was given. “Howmany of us are able to put on their CVs that they’ve debated with the PrimeMinister?” A round of applause was given, and Cameron took centre stagewith his leaflet and notes.

I won’t go into detail about what was discussed at the session - it’s all in thenews. What I will say, though, is that I struggled not to laugh at some of hisresponses. What I will also say is that whenever I raised my hand to ask aquestion, Cameron managed to look everywhere but at me. Everywhere, infact, but at the people armed with notepads and pens. The people wholooked like press. He focused on the people who looked like students, wholooked like they fitted in the 18-25 age bracket, the ones with questions hecould take and easily respond to. Then suddenly he was closing the session, a round of applause was givenand he breezed out of the room.

The press pounced on those who had been selected by the Prime Minister toask him a question. Video and radio interviews were taking place all over thebuilding and outside the venue. I chatted with some colleagues for a bit, thendecided it was time to leave. On my way down the road, I spotted a local reporter on the phone. “I’mheading up to the Forum to try and get some views from the students - I’mtrying to get some positive opinions on the event, all I’ve had so far isnegativity.”

I stopped him, and told him I’d been at the event. I gave my opinion on whathad just gone down and what I would have liked to ask Cameron. It wasn’tthe positive review he’d been looking for, so I’m not sure if it’ll make the cut.

SUGGESTED FOR YOU

Five minutes later, I bumped into another colleague further down the street.“Just been in a session with the Prime Minister,” I told him.

“Wait, what?”

“Yeah...I’ve got some thoughts on it,” I told him.

Here are my thoughts.

David Cameron, if you are going to take a Q&A session on the EUreferendum at a University, aimed at young people, it might have been goodif you turned up when the students were actually around. If you’re going toanswer questions, you might want to acknowledge more people than just ahand-picked few, before breezing out and driving away. If you want toencourage people to vote, please just do that. Don’t tell us to vote, then giveus pro-EU propaganda. Listen to us, take on board what we have to say andwhat we want to ask. Because I still have questions for you. Some of themgot answered in the session, but not to my satisfaction. In fact, I don’t thinkmany people are satisfied with what went down at the University today. Themedia storm is testament to that.

So thank you from me for writingthis which confirms my opinion.. That this Referendum has to be seized upon by the serious patriotsand serious thinkers, men and women of concience and Integrity who believe in a Free, DemocraticUK. Not the facile , slick , superficial opportunists that credit themselves as " Leaders"..God helpus.Cameron is a car salesman. Too clever by half. Hopefully, he will fly too high and burn.

CLES One Step Beyond Mentoring SchemeLaunchThe CLES One Step Beyond Mentoring Scheme for research andacademic staff was launched on Thursday 10th March.

Speakers at the event were Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean ProfessorDan Charman, Director of College Services and CLES College Registrar LindaPeka, and external speaker Mr Robert McIlwraith, chartered engineer andmember of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Mr McIlwraith discussed the benefits of mentoring and his personalexperiences. The launch was followed up with a Q & A, refreshments andnetworking opportunities with Discipline Mentoring Champions.

One Step Beyond Mentoring is a crosscollege scheme between staff. Avoluntary but formal arrangement is taken on, whereby an experiencedindividual supports the development of a less experienced member of staffthrough regular confidential meetings and discussions. Mentor and menteeroles are recognised in staff PDRs and participants in the scheme will berecognised in the PDP process under “citizenship”. It is particularly useful for those in the early stages of their career.

Phase 1 of the scheme is aimed at academic and research staff. Training is provided for all mentors, who can taken on amaximum of four mentees. A pool of mentors are sent to mentees to choose from. Frequency, length and venue formeetings are mutually agreed upon, over a prearranged time period.

There is further support available for mentors, should the mentees require further specialist advice and attention. This canbe accessed through the online You eDevelop database, which highlights several helpful services and resources thatmentors can direct their mentees to. Topics covered include:

Protecting Staff Dignity and Respect

Supporting Parents and Carers

Helping Social, Physical, Mental and/or Spiritual Wellbeing

Training and Development Resources

Initial registrations from academics and researchers are encouraged to be submitted by 12th April using the online mentorand mentee application forms.

Background to the Mentoring Process and CLESMentoring supports the growth of an individual, both professionally and personally. A mentor is often defined as a “criticalfriend” or “supportive challenger”, as they help people to develop their selfawareness skills and their ability to takeresponsibility and solve their own problems.

The distinguishing characteristic of a mentor is that they can use their personal experiences in the support of the mentee.Mentors are experienced professionals who are willing and able to help others, using their own professional experience tosupport the mentee. They offer impartial feedback and provide a space for the mentee to air issues they may have, withthe aim of steering them towards a resolution. It is also beneficial to those in need of expert insight and advice duringchanging or challenging times.

The College of Life and Environmental Sciences (CLES) has identified mentoring as an essential tool for providing asupportive environment for staff through Athena SWAN focus groups and surveys. Mentoring is particularly recommendedfor improving the retention and promotion of women and underrepresented groups in academia, which the College seesas a priority.
