“Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:15-16

“You are the salt of the earth. . .you are the light of the world.” Being Christian is not supposed to be boring! On the contrary, Jesus gave us the mission to bring flavor to the world, and to brighten things up when they seem dark and dismal. What a misunderstanding it is to think that following Christ would ever mean abandoning “the good life” or becoming dull servants of a rigid master. No, we are meant to be like the salt that brings a delicious meal to perfection. We are called to be the light that enables energy and activity. An authentic Christian is filled with life in the truest sense, filled with the One who is “the way and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). Joy and gratitude are really meant to be at the heart of the Christian experience. Our loving Father has given us the gift of salvation and the hope of heaven as free gifts. Because Christ has conquered sin and death, we can exult with Easter joy all year long! This is the good news we proclaim. It’s not news that’s meant to be whispered in a private corner. Jesus tells us to be like a city set on a mountain, and a lamp radiating light from a lampstand. We have a mission to invigorate the world with the hope, the happiness, and the fulfillment found in Christ. Jesus said that we are in fact salt and light. The question is only whether we will “lose our taste.” That of course is up to us. If we let our faith in the good news fade, we are bound to grow dull. But when we remain rooted in Christ, we will truly be able to let our light shine.

Living the Eucharist this Lent Our Parish is participating in Living the Eucharist. This Lenten spiritual renewal program provides us with opportunities to grow in our faith. We invite you to join a small faith sharing group which will meet once a week during Lent. These sessions are offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m.—8:00 p.m. Sign up sheets can be found at the entrance of the church and at the parish hall during our St. Vincent de Paul breakfast Sunday, February 9th. A teen group will also meet each week on Thursdays.

Living Christ’s Mission: Ever Present The sobs I heard coming from my daughter’s bedroom were never intended for my ears. She was informing her best friend that I would soon be on my way for emergency surgery, making it impossible for me to attend her high school graduation the next evening. While the pain in my body was severe, what hurt more was that I would be absent for the graduation of my only daughter. Following doctor’s orders we loaded into the car and headed for the hospital. I thought to myself, this should never have happened. Some six weeks before I had the surgery scheduled and had meticulously made all the preparations at work. However, a flu less than 24 hours before surgery caused its postponement. If the surgery had occurred as planned, I would have been able to see my daughter graduate. O God, where were you when I asked for help? Where are you now? As we parked by the emergency room, my prayers changed from God take this pain away to God help me through my surgery, and my daughter, through my absence. As I got out of the car, to my utter amazement, the pain that had wracked my body for hours immediately disappeared. Could it be? I walked around to make sure that was the case and confirmed that I was, indeed, pain-free. My joy exploded! I would see my daughter graduate. There is no doubt in my mind that God himself intervened. As I looked back I realized that it was all part of his plan. The cancelled surgery at the most appropri-ate time, led to a possible emergency surgery at the most inappropriate time. God, then, stepped in at the 11th hour, to make sure I knew that He heard my prayers and would never keep me from being with my daughter on a day that meant so much to her. This incident made me think about our ever-present God. Through our successes and failures, our good deeds and sins, our health and our ill-nesses, he never leaves our side, regardless of our behavior toward him. Sometimes he even works a miracle to remind us that while we might forget that he is with us, he always remembers that we are with him.
