In Christ,

Lent is underway. English speakers are unique in referring to this season as Lent. In Latin we refer to this season as Quadragesima, which means “fortieth,” referring to the number of days. Catholics of most other languages refer to Lent in reference to the 40 Days. Some others have names for it in refer-ence to the fasting. So why do we call it Lent? The English word “Lent” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for lengthen which was used for Spring time. In other words the days are getting longer, lengthened, during the season of Spring. Our calling Lent after this word is mostly connected to the fact that it falls in Spring. However we could also make a spiritual reflection out of this. Spring is the season of new life. Many things in nature have been dormant and apparently dead. Now they will “spring” to life again. We too are asked to embrace this mys-tery of death and new life. In Lent we die to the world through our embrace of discipline in order to receive a much greater life. Not unlike the plants we must make room for this new life through a purging of the old self. Also relatable is the literal growth of the Church through new members. Just as nature renews herself every spring, so during the Church’s spring we are renewed through catechumens. As they pre-pare for baptism, we prepare for the renewal of our baptism. As they shed themselves of old ways through denouncing false teachings and attachments of the past, we too suffer with Christ for our sins through our own penance. At Easter when they are given the light of Christ for the first time, we too are given the light of Christ to strengthen what was given to us before. Growth and new life are always accompanied by burden, pain, and struggle. This is evident in a woman’s pregnancy and giving birth to her child. It is also seen in the Cross of Jesus which has given us new life. In Lent we are asked to make room for the new life by ending our attachments to this life. We can die to ourselves in this way, and by doing so we are made ready for the new life of Christ.
