Like many smaller cities around the country, in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s Asheboro struggled with the loss of downtown businesses as shopping

malls and bypasses drew crowds away from the city center. Storefronts were shuttered, lights went out and downtowns began to look more like ghost towns as shops, restaurants and services moved away.

In Asheboro, though, public and private efforts to revitalize downtown have reversed that gloomy trend. Retail, restaurants, galleries and creative new businesses have moved back to the Sunset Avenue neighborhood, public art dots downtown, and a nonstop calendar of events has given the city a fresh point of view and captured its residents’ hearts.

“During that down time realtors didn’t want to bring people downtown,” says Linda Carter, city council member and longtime head of Asheboro’s Downtown Revitalization Commission. “Now, they tell people to come into town on Sunset Avenue or they take them downtown to show them how much there is to do.”

Bicentennial park, farmers Market spark downtown

The first big boost to downtown came in the late 1990s, when a public-private partnership bought Asheboro’s derelict bus station and turned it into Bicentennial Park, now a landmark in the heart of the city. The “very family-friendly park,” Carter says, hosts numerous public and private events, from weddings to a popular concert series.

Next, the antiquated farmers market was moved downtown and provided with bathrooms, lighting, seating and other amenities, making it a busy hub of activity.

Streetscape down Sunset Avenue brought angled parking spaces, redone sidewalks, trees, f lowers and a general sprucing up, and an ambitious public-private art project has brought permanent and changing outdoor sculpture to downtown.

sunset theatre, polar Bears Become Asheboro landmarks

The city’s 2008 purchase of the circa-1929 Sunset Theatre launched the restoration of this much-loved, but shabby local landmark. Carpets have been replaced, the roof has been repaired and plans are well underway for the rest of the more than $2 million project. Even so, the theater is already home to films, theater productions and concerts.

Painter Susan Harrell is bringing her talent to bear, literally, on a wall of the popular Flying Pig sports bar. Three giant polar bears make up the 10-foot-by-20-foot mural, meant to draw attention to the North Carolina Zoo’s expanding polar bear exhibit.

Business is BoomingMeanwhile, neighborhood businesses are

enjoying downtown’s exciting new ambiance. Several new businesses such as restaurants, sports bars, art galleries, various retailers, an ice cream store and a healthy living store have turned a once-sad downtown into a booming community center once again.

every stock car that runs on Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series uses parts from G-Force/Tex Racing

in Asheboro.“We build transmissions, gears,

drive shafts and rear end housings, and just about all of the 20 employees who work for us live right here in Asheboro,” says Eddie Cagle, vice president of G-Force/Tex Racing. “We’re a close-knit group who loves stock car racing, and NASCAR knows all about the excellent parts we produce.”

Motorsports are important to the local economy in the areas of manufacturing, engineering, tourism and entertainment, and G-Force plays a big part. However, it is merely one of several motorsports-related driving forces in Randolph County:

caraway speedwayThis .455-mile NASCAR-sanctioned

facility was built in 1966 and remained a dirt track until 1972 when it joined the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series as an

asphalt short track. Russell & Valastra Hackett have owned and operated the paved oval track since 1977, and in 1998 and 1999 poured $500,000 into repaving the surface, reconstructing the retaining walls and refurbishing the existing grandstands. Another $1 million was spent in 2000 to build additional grandstands and construct a new entrance as well as ticket booths, restrooms and much more.

Zoo city Motor sports parkZoo City offers motocross racing

along a 1.25-mile outdoor track made of loamy thick clay. The track is 25 feet wide and features fast, sweeping lanes, and the facility is ideal because Asheboro and the surrounding area are home to some of the best motocross riders in the Southeast.

“It is a very exhilarating track,” says owner Barry Maness, who actually purchased and constructed the facility for his 11-year-old son, Damon, to train. “Zoo City is an American Motocross Association-sanctioned track that is

open every other Saturday night for racing in the summer months.”

The track is also available to rent.“For example, Joe Gibbs Racing

brings their motocross teams to Zoo City on a regular basis to train privately,” Maness says.

petty’s garageRacing legend Richard Petty is from

Level Cross and decided to establish Petty’s Garage in June 2010. The company is currently selling tricked-out and souped-up Dodge Challengers to private owners, and also builds vehicles that are used in feature films and television shows.

Petty primarily drove Dodges during his NASCAR racing heyday and his cars were always adorned with No. 43, so his company is building 43 of the commemorative Challengers priced at $70,000-$75,000. Besides manufacturing the specialty cars, the employees at Petty’s Garage also offer a wide array of services that include custom body work, as well as engine testing and modification.

the biggest names in hosiery – including No Nonsense, Sheer Energy and Spanx – are all manufactured in Randolph County.

The hosiery industry here remains on solid footing, with millions of dollars of Randolph County-based hosiery being sold to major retailers each year. Items made locally include stockings, leggings, tights, pantyhose, knee highs and toe socks.

“Our particular company has been in the hosiery business for more than 100 years – we started in Asheboro in 1909 and have been here ever since,” says Bill Redding, chairman of Acme McCrary Corporation. “We began manufacturing ladies hosiery and focused solely on that for many years, and still make ladies hosiery. But like other companies in this business had to do, we innovated and expanded into many other products in order to survive.”

Redding says Acme McCrary diversified in the 1990s as fewer women were wearing dresses when casualization evolved.

“Women’s hosiery saw $200 million in sales in 1990, and today it accounts for $50 million annually,” he says. “So we branched into shapewear control products for the torso, and seamless activewear. Acme McCrary is also in the children’s and infants market, making tights and socks. We just keep innovating.”

Acme McCrary operates five plants in Asheboro and has 800 employees, and sells its products to Walmart, Target and other major retailers.

“We make products and then sell them to companies who put their own brand names on them,” Redding says. “For example, we ship a lot of our shapewear to Atlanta where they then become Spanx products.”

Besides Acme McCrary, several other local companies continue to enjoy a good run:

Bossong MillsBossong in the late 1930s was the first mill to use DuPont’s

new revolutionary fiber nylon to produce stockings. The company today makes shapewear, stockings, tights and trouser socks, and also produces sports bras, tank tops and activewear.

“Americans these days are increasingly enthusiastic in

their pursuit of exercise and sports, and we bring them product lines with brand recognition,” says company president Huntley Bossong.

Bossong Mills has 300 employees in Asheboro and supplies products to most major retail chains, department stores, discount chains, direct TV sales and mail order catalogs.

fine line hosieryFine Line Hosiery manufactures a variety of hosiery such

as sheer, lace top thigh highs, tights, and support panty hose. They also manufacture trouser socks and their special niche is in customized specialty hosiery. Since they have their own research and development department, they are able to make many styles to fit their customer’s needs.

elastic therapyThis company makes medical hosiery and bodywear,

with many items worn to aid the treatment and prevention of venous disorders of the legs. Elastic Therapy manufactures anti-embolism stockings, sheer products, surgical weight stockings and a variety of men’s and women’s medical compression socks.

the road to successcHambeR embRaces tRansPoRtation PRojects

george Gusler admits that the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber

of Commerce has been involved in quite a few interesting and positive projects lately.

The chamber’s president points out that many of those projects involve transportation, and specific plans are moving forward thanks to a chamber transportation committee.

“For example, 2010 saw the completion and opening of two visitor information centers on Interstate 73/74 just south of Asheboro,” Gusler says. “The chamber worked closely with the Raleigh state legislature and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to make those two visitor centers a reality.”

u.s. highway 64 expansionThe chamber has also been working

diligently with state legislators and the NCDOT to expand U.S. Highway 64 into a four-lane thoroughfare from Asheboro to Raleigh. In addition, a Transportation Improvement Program has been accepted at the state capital to make U.S. Highway 64 a four-lane road from Asheboro to Interstate 85 near Lexington.

“There is also a Transportation Improvement Program in place to eventually transform N.C. Highway 49 into a four-lane road from Asheboro all the way into Charlotte, and our chamber has been heavily involved in pushing to make that happen,

too,” Gusler says. “All these road improvements will help our residents get to and from places much easier, plus it will make traveling to Asheboro much easier for tourists who will spend money here.”

Gusler says NCDOT hosts public meetings each year throughout the state, and the Asheboro/Randolph chamber’s transportation committee is always in attendance to voice what is important for the growth of this community.

“All of these highway projects will indeed happen, but with funding in question during these economic times, the only issue is when it will all take place,” he says. “But all of these projects are exciting news for the near future.”

randOlph cancer center gets natiOnal recOgnitiOn

Local residents have long turned to the hospital for their health-care needs, and the hospital in turn has made sure it has the most current and sophisticated equipment and facilities. a prime example is the Randolph Cancer Center, now in a new 21,000-square-foot complex on the hospital’s grounds, part of an overall 58,000-square-foot addition that includes the Randolph Hospital outpatient Care Center.

The cancer center offers chemotherapy, radiation therapy and therapeutic support services to Randolph County and the surrounding area. all forms of cancer are treated, providing a fully integrated medical campus for both inpatient and outpatient needs. and just to make sure people can keep track of its activities, the center has a Facebook page with blogs from doctors and nurses, as well as health and nutritional information.

all this innovation hasn’t gone unnoticed.

The Randolph Cancer Center has received two

Hematology & oncology Practice excellence awards

from Hematology & Oncology News & Issues magazine.

While the cancer center is a major accomplishment, there’s much more at the 145-bed Randolph Hospital.

Breast center designated center OF excellence

In June 2010, the Breast Center at Randolph Hospital was designated a Breast Imaging Center of excellence by the american College of Radiology’s Commission on Quality and Safety and the Commission on Breast Imaging. and in July 2010 the Kellogg, Brown and Root Foundation awarded a grant to the hospital to support the implementation and integration of its electronic Medical Record system. That massive data project will begin with the emergency department, officials say, and eventually incorporate all hospital departments.

Like any health-care facility, Randolph Hospital is mindful of financial concerns. This nonprofit has always been a careful steward of its funds, however, so the community is responsive to its needs. a bond issue covered $23 million of the outpatient and Cancer Center’s costs, but an additional $4.8 million came from private, corporate and foundation gifts.

uWharrie natiOnal FOrestWant to get away from it all? Travel no farther

than the Uwharrie national Forest, which covers

more than 50,000 acres in Randolph and

neighboring Montgomery and davidson counties.

among its famous features is Badin Lake, with

5,350 acres of boating and fishing along with

adjacent camping areas, 40 miles of trails that end

in the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness, and trails for

off-road vehicles and horses. Hunters also visit the

Uwharrie for deer, turkey and other small game.

a little closer to home, and in more polished

surroundings, asheboro Cultural & Recreation

Services is implementing a 20-year master plan that

will expand its very popular youth athletic programs,

as well as add more parks and adult programming.

In addition to its network of parks, Lake Lucas and

Lake Reese, swimming pools, tennis courts and

picnic facilities, the department also operates a

10,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor skate park and

a historic nine-hole golf course designed in 1935 by

donald Ross. More than 25,000 rounds per year are

played here, making the city’s course a stiff rival

to nearby Tot Hill Farm golf Club and Pinewood

Country Club’s fairways. Set near the Caraway

Mountains is the asheboro Country Club a par

71 championship course.

facilities at five of its eight city parks, and a new

65-acre park will offer a four- to six-field soccer

summertime mainstay for more than a decade,

competing in the Coastal Plain League. The

collegiate, wooden-bat team plays from late

May through mid-august at McCrary Park.
